Adam Gase: Lackluster effort against Bills led to changes

The Dolphins have made plenty of big changes to the roster this offseason. The changes were sparked in part by the team’s effort, of lack thereof, during a 24-16 loss to the Bills.

“That game at Buffalo just seemed like a 20-hour game,” coach Adam Gase recently said on The Joe Rose Show, via the Palm Beach Post. “I was just waiting for us to turn the corner and really get going and nothing was working for us. There was no swagger, no attitude, and it was disappointing to see. It wasn’t everybody. You turn on that tape, there are guys that stand out noticeably as far as their effort and their play that was extremely high, and they were giving everything they had. We just did not have enough guys doing that. That’s why we felt like we needed to change some things around.”

The Dolphins had just upset the Patriots on a Monday night in Miami, a win that seemed to potentially get a rocky season on track. The loss at Buffalo sparked a three-game slide that sealed the team’s fate for 2017.

Gase’s comments represent a more specific twist on a concept he seemed to agree with during a conversation at the league meetings in Orlando. The adversity that the Dolphins faced throughout the 2017 season made it easier for Gase to determine who is and isn’t fully on board. Moving forward, Gase surely wants more of the guys who will be all in no matter what, and fewer of the guys who won’t be.

  1. after the New England win they were 6-7; it’s not like they were a playoff team. Then they lose to a playoff team in Buffalo, no shame in that. Looks like more blaming of the players for the results of his sorry tenure as coach.

  2. The Dolphins were in ‘Cap Hell’ with 6 wins and 10 loses. It was a forgone conclusion despite spending a lot of money; The team did not have enough talent to win. I mean no disrespect to Coach Adam Gase but anything he states just prior to the 2018 draft may not be accurate for obvious reasons, it’s B.S. time! Gase and the Dolphins will be drafting a Quarterback in the first round for sure! The Dolphins need to develop a young Quarterback who can read defenses, throw the ball down field with accuracy in addition to making all the necessary NFL throws. A QB whose health is not suspect due to recent injuries.

  3. I agree with Gase about this game and why it led to changes. Only problem is that Cam Wake, who was woeful in this game, is still on the team at a pretty high price. Desperately Need more out of Charles Harris this year.

  4. So the coach that essentially quit by continually going for it on 4th down when they were in field goal range multiple times early in the game was surprised by players not wanting to put forth full effort after that?!?!

I like it. These guys are making far too much money to be taking games off.

Not saying I disagree, but I would throw in the caveat that a team coming out flat after a big win is also a sign of poor leadership from the coaching staff

Wait. You consider trusting your offense to get a first down to sustain a drive that could end up in a TD instead of settling for a field goal “quitting”?

    Interesting take.

Interesting take.-So your take is teams should never kick field goals?!?’ Probably should stick to soccer and wrestling

  8. “The Dolphins had just upset the Patriots on a Monday night in Miami”

Doesn’t Dolphin fans pretty much circle this game as a win on the schedule every year since it pretty much happens every year. Either Brady can’t play in warm weather or Belichick can’t find a way to cheat in Miami but it’s odd that’s the only place that gives them two any problems.

  9. It is not a fair argument to say that kicking a FG or going for it on 4th is poor judgement. It depends on the actaul scenario. Since most of you are not Dolphins fans and most likely did not watch the game…. the Dolphins had nothing to lose and everything to gain. The 4th down attempt was short yardage and near halftime. The 2nd half he attemped 2 more because they were behind and time was slipping away. It was the atrocious PENALTIES by Pouncey Suh and Landry. Go figure all of them are gone. I really feel this team will be better without them. Certainly not predicting a deep run in the playoffs, but they are addressing depth. Not many teams lose their QB and MLB and CB before the season. The Dolphins are not as bad as it seems.

  10. I like the idea of cleaning out bad influences and guys that weren’t performing – but Gase needs to hold himself accountable too.

Cutler – needed to be benched, but wasn’t.
Julius Thomas – needed to be benched, but wasn’t.
OL Coach Chris Foerster was comfortable enough to do lines on property AND record a video of AND send it to a stripper.

It’s evident the discipline and favoritism is part of Gase’s philosophy.
He needs to change that to go along with the already implemented changes

  11. The team could use more of an upgrade in talent also. They are overpaying for guys like Branch, Alonso & Tannehill.
