Richie Incognito asks to be released from his contract

Richie Incognito wants out of the contract he just signed last month.

Incognito, who re-did his deal with the Bills on March 15, only to say he was firing his agents and then say he was retiring, now says he wants the Bills to cut him.

“Please release me from my contract,” Incognito wrote on Twitter, in a message directed at the Bills. “Contact Athletes First for further updates. Thank you for your service.”

That he’s telling the Bills to contact Athletes First is odd, given that he fired them as his agents over Twitter 10 days ago.

What seems to have happened is that Athletes First negotiated a new contract for Incognito, he now wishes he hadn’t signed that contract, he knows he can’t get out of the contract by retiring because then he’d have to pay back his signing bonus, and now he wants the Bills to cut him so he doesn’t have to pay his signing bonus.

If the Bills don’t grant his wish, Incognito can un-retire and show up to the Bills’ offseason program, which starts tomorrow. Things could get even more interesting then.

  1. I TOLD YA.

    This loser needs to retire.

    KICKED OUT of Nebraska
    KICKED OUT of Oregon

Spitting on opposing players NUMEROUS TIMES.

    Bullying a mentally ill teammate

    Racial slurring assistant coach

  2. You play for us or you retire, just like Boldin> your antics are causing a mess at the worst possible time. You pay the price now. If we could get a solid pick outside the AFC, I’d take it, but outside that, show up and be a man about it. You used to be my favorite Bill. Now, not so much.

  3. For once he’s right but he’s still and idiot. He was already under paid as a pro bowl level guard when he took the pay and now because of his ex agent he is grossly under paid. Did the Bills even have CAP problems?

  4. His contract seemed pretty low for someone who has put together three very good years in Buffalo. It’s possible he saw what Solder got in NY and thought his agents misread the market. For what it’s worth, after the Miami incident, this guy seems to have cleaned up his act and deserves some credit. He has some good football left in him.

  5. I seriously think the guy has a screw loose. He’s not even coming across as rational. Mind you as talented as I think the guy is, I’ve never thought he was wired right.

  6. Ummmm read the contract and understand it before you sign it. Otherwise live with it. Why should the Bills negotiate a contract with Ritchie then allow him out of the contract so he can keep the signing bonus?

  7. He should have quoted Eric Cartman, cause he is the real life version….”Screw you guys, I’m going home”…

  8. Again, this guy has never been a Mensa candidate, but his conduct is indicative of a guy with some mental issues. In ten years, Richie won’t be able to recognize his own face in a mirror. He should retire and join what little time he has left with a partially functioning brain.

  9. That he’s telling the Bills to contact Athletes First is odd, given that he fired them as his agents over Twitter 10 days ago.

What’s even more odd is the fact he honestly expects the Bills to just cut him so he can keep his signing bonus without services rendered.
It should go without saying, but why would any team do this, and how can any player expect them to?!?
    Concussions anyone?

  10. “Manic depression is a frustrating mess” Jimi Hendrix….

Someone from the Bills needs to get Richie to a doctor….

  11. His tweets and quotes are so inconsistent and nutty sounding that I’m really wondering about his mental state. I hope he has people in his life who will encourage him to get evaluated. I was never a fan of his, but it would be very sad if he’s physically or mentally ill.

  12. Yeah, not the “good guy” and “changed man” many Bills fans were calling him the last few days. The guy has always been an idiot. He never changed.

Just because he wore your teams uniform doesn’t make him a good person.

  13. Dude is a beast on the field, sad to see him struggle like this mentally. He’s still far more stable than Accusing J Martin.

  14. Either he was on a bender or he trusted his agent and never read the deal himself before he signed it. Either way, it’s his own doing.

His contract was low because his own shenanigans with J.Martin nearly got him banished from the league. He had to earn his way back. He still has a bad reputation today (can’t imagine why) and that hurts his value. He has no one to blame but himself.

  16. I’m guessing he was not happy w the contract but signed it to play. Finds out after he has liver and kidney issues (and I’m guessing from the behavior some concussion damage-although if his health is very bad he might be out of control with fear of actually dying too). But then finds out he will have to pay the money-which he doesn’t have. So obviously has to go back. But if he’s legit with his health issues then he’s not going to play like he could anyway and tank on purpose. So it might be in the bills interest to let him walk.

  17. I bet his accountant told him he doesn’t have the cash on hand to pay back the signing bonus.

  18. The NFL is trying to hold up their CTE payouts claiming there is too much fraud among the claims. But I think some of these cases are cut and dried. Its sad too because if the rest of the life is going to be all over the place like this thats just not a good existence.

  19. Ritchie needs professional help ASAP. When someone is behaving this bizarrely, bad things usually follow.

  20. I am going to stop laughing at this now because I don’t want to feel guilty when it turns out this is a mental health crisis and not just Richie being Richie.

  21. You can’t keep the signing bonus of a one year contract then ask to be released without paying it back. Come on Man!
It’s tit for tat …you can’t take their money and walk…it’s not a divorce….(every guy divorced knows what I’m saying)

Of course if Toronto got an NFL team Buffalo would want one too! And if they get that maybe they could also get an NHL team!

  25. Buffalo Bills fans must have been cursed long time ago…
We made the playoffs after years of waiting, and when our attention should be focussed on one of the best drafts we may have in a long while, we get this B.S. distraction that we don’t really need…
    Unreal…

  26. Wow. What a surprise. All his supporters posting here just a week ago when he retired claiming how great he was, how he changed and cleaned up his act and became the perfect team player that will be truly missed are nowhere to be found now. It must be hard to comment when you’re digesting that much crow.

  27. I think Richie Incognito has his demons and he needs someone’s prayers. I have to repent of my own sins daily. He has been kind to me on social media so I feel like I cannot let him down. With that said, I’m sincerely sorry for all of you illstrious Bills fans. You’re such good people and deserve nothing but the best.

  28. If he’s released he doesn’t have to pay back his bonus. This is only about money, he’s not coming back.

  29. Phd……were Not eating crow..We eat Chicken wings in Buffalove..and yes last week we were sticking up for Ritchie because we Don’t turn our back on someone that may have medical issues like was stated in his First tweet..But Now he’s about the $$$$..So being a Hard Working Town we don’t support anybody that puts $$$ before Team….maybe that’s how it works in your world but Not Here in Buffalove….

  30. Lol every single poster on this article is not understanding what is happening. Who is the guy we’re talking about? Ritchie Incognito right? Right. Ok, and what does Ritchie do? He jokes around and goofs off a lot right? Right. Combine that with the fact that we’re in the month of April, which is April fools month, I’m taking all of this a one big joke. Hence the crying laughing emojis after every one of his posts regarding this topic. Hope I cleared up some things.

  31. billsfan4life…do u Really think this a joke on Ritchies part..???? he wants MORE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ he got a contract worth about 3-5 million a yr less than pro-bowl gaurds get . !!!but he signed it ..now he wants out…plain and simple he wants more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Didn’t this all start because he said his organs are failing ?
    ————————————————————————————————————————–
It seems that the organ that is failing him is the one between his ears this last week !

  33. At what point in time did Twitter become a legitimate means of communication? Why did the Bills act on his Twitter posts and why does he seem to think Twitter posts are communication between him and the team? Same goes for some others in the public realm right now..

  34. I think he wants to retire. I think he wants out of the contract but doesn’t have the money to lose. That would be another sad fact of players getting millions but broke. He’s not gettting a better contract now so he’s not doing it to GET more money….he’s doing it to SAVE money.

  35. YPhd……were Not eating crow..We eat Chicken wings in Buffalove..and yes last week we were sticking up for Ritchie because we Don’t turn our back on someone that may have medical issues like was stated in his First tweet..But Now he’s about the $$$$..So being a Hard Working Town we don’t support anybody that puts $$$ before Team….maybe that’s how it works in your world but Not Here in Buffalove….

    ——

What? I got news for you, it was always about the money with him. He never cared about the team, city, or the fans and for you to think he did is extremely naive.

Hard working town huh? Maybe, but No More than any other city. I’ve worked in 3 other cities where the people worked harder than when I was in Buffalo. Stop with the Buffalo is so special crap. It’s not.

  36. What’s truly hilarious is how many people now who are riding this guy into the turf (where he’s always belonged – and I’m a Husker fan)…

Yet you same people were applauding him and lamenting what poor Richie had to endure with the entire Dolphins/Martin debacle.

Now you’re jumping on his carcass.

Flip floppers of ProFootballTalk UNITE! again

  37. joker65….just because U don’t work hard being a (lazy lib)… as u stated..Don’t blame our town..AND NEW’S FLASH..WITH ALL ATHLETES ..ITS ABOUT THE $$$$ ONE WAY OR ANOTHER…But in RitchIes case he ALSO HAD TO HAVE a team take him back because of that Great Human being Martain that was Just Arrested !!!!!..and I Never Said Buffalo Is Special…were just a tight community …that’s why our athletes stay here after retirement !!!

I’d say right around the same time your president started using Tweeter as a means to fire people.

  39. I think incognito is having a Charlie sheen moment of sorts. I remember the media shamelessly covering the bizarre nature of what was clearly mental illness for ratings

  40. Idk where all these people who have defended him are now jumping on him? We are all saying the same thing. He HAD to go back bc of the contract. He’s not getting a better contract now…he wants out of the one he has. That’s not jumping on him now?

  41. There is two reasons as to why I don’t want to hear praise for Richie from SOME, not all Bills fans.

    1) Harassing the Japanese dolphins trainer because of Pearl Harbor, yes what happened was awful and in the history books. But the new generation of Japanese citizens/immigrants took no part in it and don’t deserve to hear that stuff. Call me a “snowflake” or whatever I don’t care.

    2) The charity golf tournament.

Please save me the “HE TURNED HIS LIFE AROUND” crap, the guy is a loser and a complete nut.

I read everything from Richie Incognito in Cartman’s voice.

This is the best thing that I’ve read all month. Just… percect

  43. lol the guy is mental and was a penalty machine in 2017 …he is done …Hall of Fame ….bahahahaha….they wouldnt let him in room ….he can always buy a ticket i suppose .

  44. CTE at its finest right here. He belongs in the same breath as Bob Probert and Mike Webster. He should be brain scanned immediately. This is very rash behavior.
