BILLS DO A DEAL, BUT NOT THE ONE THEIR FANS HAD HOPED FOR

As it turns out, the Bills were involved in some trade-deadline maneuverings.  But it didn’t involve the player for whom Bills fans were pining.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports defensive tackle John McCargo has been shipped from Buffalo to Indianapolis.
Per Schefter, the Colts have shipped a fourth-round pick to Buffalo for McCargo.
McCargo was one of three North Carolina State defensive linemen taken in the first round of the 2006 draft, along with defensive end Mario Williams (No. 1 overall to the Texans) and defensive end (now linebacker) Manny Lawson (No. 22 overall to the 49ers).  The Bills selected McCargo with the 26th overall pick.
In two-plus years, McCargo had 25 games appearances but no starts.
For the Colts, McCargo likely will be an immediate starter, given their struggles at the position.  Quinn Pitcock, a third-round pick in 2007, quit football prior to training camp.  Ed Johnson, an undrafted free agent, was cut after being arrested for possession of marijuana.
McCargo is signed for three more seasons, at salaries of $572,500 in 2008, $835,000 in 2009, and $685,000 in 2010.

  1. Didn’t the Bills trade up back into the first round to get McCargo? If so, what did they give up to make that move? I believe Donte Whitner was their actual 1st round pick at #8 overall that year

  2. The bills did trade up to get McCargo. They gave up their 2nd and 3rd that year to the Bears I believe.

  3. As someone who pays a lot of attention to the first couple rounds of the draft, I remember thinking “you’re picking THAT guy in the first round?”. I (and I’m sure many others) feel strangely validated by the fact that he hasn’t lived up to that lofty pick.
Hopefully the Bills can turn that 4th rounder into something good, anyway.

  4. This makes no sense. A 2 and 3 turned into a 1 and you trade him a little over 2 years later for a 4? This makes no sense at all. Is something wrong with the guy?

  5. Mcargo was a great player and was developing into a solid player. The main reason he didnt develope like the bills had hoped is because of ankle and foot injuries. its too bad we waisted a 1st round pick on him. hopefully the bills will turn the 4th rounder into a good pick

  6. he never panned out, his injury in season one kind of put him up against the odds. he has talent, not sure about heart. wasted pick for sure. but other bills taken in that draft include : donte whitner(starter) ashton youboty(very solid nickel as of now), kyle williams(starter) ko simpson(starter) brad butler(starter) keith ellison (starter) and also picked up john diggorgio undrafted who has made some starts. all in all a still very solid draft.

  7. They blew that pick but it was a good draft netting four current starters in Whitner and Simpson at safety, Williams at DT and Ellison at OLB. Youboty CB and Butler OT have both stepped in as reserves, not bad Marv, not bad at all.

  8. @ touchdownbuffalo. Butler is not a reserve, he’s a starting RG. That is one of the best drafts the Bills ever had. Marv’s first and his best.

  9. we trade him 2 a afc team who we r battlin 4 a playoff spot???not smart. lord help us if stroud or kyle get hurt.

  10. The Bills “shipped” McCargo to the Colts and the Colts “shipped” a fourth round pick to the Bills. I see what you did there.
Did they ship him using a Mayflower van?

  11. Kristoff made my point exactly. This only hurts the Bills if Marcus Stroud or Kyle Williams (or even Spencer Johnson) miss any amount of time with an injury. However, it gives an already dangerous Colts team help at their weakest position. This seems a risky move for a Bills team that could be fighting the Colts for a playoff spot and/or facing them IN the playoffs.
Then again, the Patriots play the Colts this year and the Bills don’t, so at least there’s that.

  12. No, I’m pretty sure the consensus Bills fan wish was for Gonzo …
… although I think the avg. Bills fan needs to look at the depth chart at LB, the Crowell injury hurts worse than most realize
Napolean Harris, who just got cut should be on that wish list to shore things up at LB …

  13. Well its about time the Bills got even with the Colts. They shipped the mother of all turds [DT Larry Triplett] to the Bills 3 years ago so it was time to ship a major turd back to the Colts. The Bills D-line coach has stated that McCargo had less than a stellar motor and his lack of motivation led to his getting traded. Hes now the Colts problem.
