AL SHARPTON RIPS NEW YORK POST FOR PLAXICO COLUMN

On Monday, New York Post writer Steve Serby began his column with, “Good for Tom Coughlin. Good for Coughlin for tightening the noose around Plaxico Burress.”
Al Sharpton thinks that was racist, and he wants the Post to apologize.
“To make such a blatant racist statement about an African-American football player with a neck injury is completely unacceptable,” Sharpton told the New York Daily News. “Clearly, the racial connotation is very disturbing. … This is the verbal reflection of a hanging noose.”
Sharpton said the Post would face consequences if it doesn’t take action, although he didn’t say what, exactly, he wants the Post to do, or what he’ll do if the Post doesn’t act.
“They have to act swiftly,” Sharpton said. “If we don’t see action, I will lay out exactly what that is … we would like to talk to someone there about whether it was the writer or editor who let this in.”
Sharpton said he doesn’t necessarily think Serby intended anything racist with his words, but that he believes the Post still needs to address the matter. So far, the Post has not commented.

  1. looks like someone is reaching hard to get his name in the media, a little barrack jealousy perhaps?

  2. Hahahahaha!! Just when you think Sharpton can’t get any more clownlike he goes and does something like this, and totally redeems himself.

  3. So much for the First Amendment…
Whenever Big Al is involved, everyone is a loser except his wallet.

  4. I hate Sharpton.
It was a figure of speech, dumbass. Every time he talks he demonstrates the ugly flip side of racism… the willingness to call foul about the dumbest of shit.

  5. Funny, I didn’t read anything about ol Al being upset about the Sarah Palin doll actually hangin in a Halloween display is San Fransisco.

  6. Sharpton is an idiot who should get a real job! Stop looking for trouble, he is the rascist.

  7. Thank you Al Sharpton for letting me know the comments were racist, even that that thought never entered my mind when I first read hat article.

  8. Once again Sharpton takes something that was said and he dosen’t agree with and blows it out of up. It must be a difficult life to live when you are constantly offended by statements made by every little “Tom, Dick and Harry” in America. Grow up you little baby.

  9. What’s wrong Al, been out of the news too long? Worry about all the black kids with no fathers Al. Jump on that crusade.

  10. Sharpton and his buddy the “reverend” Jesse Jackson are extortionists. What they get by with is the same thing the Mafia did to people.

  11. African-Americans are not the only ones to have died by being hung.
    Al Sharpton pisses me off.

  12. Ah, more race baiting from Al Sharpton. Hey, he’s got to do something to try and stay relevant. People like him only serve to perpetuate racism because it’s their source of power.

  13. While I think it was probably slightly inappropriate of the Post to write a heading like that, I think it is funny that Al Sharpton is tossing out empty threats.

  14. If no one pays any attention to Al, he might go away.
Are you gonna cover the Huizenga story, I mean, it is something that might make the Messiah look bad.

  15. There might have been a little racism in the opening paragraph, which I have no idea how the noose around the neck even made it past the editor. But other than that, this is a very okay article. Should they have used another example other than the noose around the neck, yes, but everything else says that the team is tired of a guy that is supposed to be a leader and instead is acting like a child. I believe the Post should apologize for the opening statement, saying it was over-the-top. However, if Plax was Caucasian, would we even have this conversation about racism and the noose?

  16. Although I’m pretty sure there was nothing racist there, they should still come out and apologize if anyone took it as a racist reference and plead stupidity.

  17. Maybe I’m just a bigoted white man, but I didn’t read anything racial into the comment until Al Sharpton spoke up about it.
Sharpton says, “Clearly, the racial connotation is very disturbing. … This is the verbal reflection of a hanging noose.” and then he doesn’t necessarily think Serby intended anything racist? HuH?

  18. While I see that a noose does have negative historical connotations…is Al Sharpton serious with this crap? Does this guy have nothing else to do than sit around and wait for something to complain about because there may or may not have been some inflammatory intent to an article that may or may not have meant to be possibly a little risque? If you want to stand up for civil rights then go find those who are truly being persecuted and help them. This guy gives all people a bad name.

  19. Throwing fits about stupid stuff like this, really makes you forget all the good things that guys like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have done. They need to learn what issues deserve attention and which ones aren’t worth it.

  20. Pardon the pun, but Sharpton talking about someone who is racist is the pot calling the kettle black.
He needs to shut up and get a life.

  21. What monetary or professional gain can Al sharpton get this time?!
One of the best comic strips the Post ever published was one picture of a beautiful drawing of Martin Luther King Jr and with a bubble saying “I have a dream”. Then there’s a Picture next to it with a disgusting fat drawing of Al Shartpon with money falling from the sky onto him and a bubble saying “I have a scheme”. One of the best comics The post ever printed.

  22. Al Sharpton is moron. I wish I was black and I could twist someone’s word around. Oh no you can mention a black man and noose in the same sentence. Al Sharpton is an embarassment to this country. Keep trying to milk us for every handout you can get Al!!!

  23. Sharpton is a clown. He thrives on this crap. This guy is doing no good for anyone, and why anyone pays attention to this diarreah that consistently comes from his mouth is beyond me.

  24. And do I even need to mention how big of a jackass Burress is? He brings all of this on himself. Don’t worry Al we all it’s not his fault he can’t follow team rules.

  25. The Post is the Fox News of newspapers. So if anyone were to sneak in some closet racist, it would be them.
Then again Sharpton is the Fox News of activists, so this should be a good one.
All of it benefitting the rest of the NFC East.

  26. Upon further review…. ““To make such a blatant racist statement about an African-American football player with a neck injury is completely unacceptable,” Sharpton told the New York Daily News. “Clearly, the racial connotation is very disturbing. … This is the verbal reflection of a hanging noose.”
Then it says…… he doesn’t necessarily think Serby intended anything racist with his words…..
well which it? Racist or not? I suppose it would depend on how much Sharpton would benefit from it. If he can stand to make a buck on it, then it’s definitely racism.

  27. Al Sharpton may be the biggest douche in the universe. If he admits that he doesn’t think racism was intended, why play the racism card? My guess is Sharpton’s name hasn’t been in the press much as of late, and he was starting to feel unimportant.

  28. HAHAHA!! LOLOL….Typical Sharpton. Get a life, loser. If you think the post is a white supremecy paper, you are more whacked out than I thought you were. You don’t even know what “offsides” mean in the game of football. Somebody get this guy some duct tape so I don’t have to hear him feeling sorry for his race. We are all equal. You sir, are the racist.

  29. Sharpton is an absolute joke. I guess he hasn’t had his name in the papers enough recently, so it was time to gin up a racially-baited angle over a harmless story with a conventional metaphor.
His act is getting really tired.

  30. The words by Serby seem quite unintended. However in this day
and age when all who have a public forum are watched closely.
The editor should have picked up on this. I believe Steve
Serby would have used the same verbage if a white receiver
was being disciplined…but that is not what happened so the
Post should apologize for the unintended remark to shut up big
fat Al. Oh I’m sorry did I offend any overweight person? Well
then push yourself away from the table and get some exercise
for a more productive longer life.

  31. Context is everything. It’s not like he said, Coughlin should put a noose around Plaxico! For once I wish people would ignore Sharpton, reacting and listening will only empower him more.

  32. Al Sharpton….always the first to jump on a cause and make everything about race. Of course, when his cause is proven to be based on lies like Duke lacross and Tawana Brawley he just disappears without apologizing(if you don’t about Brawley, google it and see how Al ruined a guys life). He is pathetic and it is sad that african americans still let him be a leader. Until they shout him down, he will just continue his racist behavior with no consequences.

  33. No one gives a damn about this. It wouldn’t be news if Sharpton didn’t get his panties in a bunch (once again) about stuff that no one else would even mention. Sharpton makes these things racist when they are not and he needs to go away.

  34. “sharpton said he didn’t think they meant it to be racist” then he plays the race card just like jesse and the rest of those RACISTS do!! funny how they want racial equality yet he pulls the race card. HE gives black people a bad name!

  35. Look at all the racists in here crowing about black people pointing out racism being racist. How stupid is that? The history of this country should speak for itself, why do black people have to forget about what is goin in this country just because it’s no longer happening the way it USED to? If Matt Jones was black, there would be no way he’s catching passes right now except from his cellmate. If Kerry Collins was black there is no way he would be throwing passes for a team. If Culpepper was white, he would have still been on someone’s roster right now. The comment someone made about blacks not being the only people that were hanged is true, but black people are the only ones who were hanged DUE TO BEING BLACK. Blame your grandparents for our so-called sensitivity to such words and phrases like the one Sharpton is speaking out against. I also realize Sharpton is an opportunist but he is still a part of history and was in fact present in the thick of the civil rights movement. If your grandparents weren’t racist pricks there would have never had to even BE a civil rights movement NOW THINK ON THAT!!

  36. If Plax hadn’t been acting like such a douche lately, then maybe he wouldn’t even be written about in the papers like that. Maybe Al could hammer some of that into him instead of walking around being hypersensitive about anything and everything. We’re never going to move on in this country with parasite losers like this screaming in the media.

  37. People like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are actually doing more harm than good. Shouting out racism for everything does not help the cause at all. What is does is make people more angry……and that just fuels the fire.
Racism exists everywhere, no matter what color you are. When people stop getting insulted at every little thing, that’s when it will end.

  38. this is somehow “news” whenever people like sharpton, and jesse “hi-jack-son” open there mouth, it is race baiting at it’s worst!

  39. I cant believe Sharpton is at it again. Is he trying to bring America together, or he is just trying to prove “America is still racist”? I dont think he cares about Plax, or anything like that, he just pops up every now and again to say “Ahah, I caught you America, you are still trying to hold black men down”. Kind of pathetic. How is that apology for the Duke Lacrosse players coming along Al?

  40. i wish i was aferican american, so everytime someone say/does something i dont like i can pull out the race card. I mena hey the fact the Plax does not follow team rules has nothing to do with it, the fact that plax is a distraction has nothing to do with it, adn the fact that plax missed a treatment has not to do with it. you are right Al it is all because of his skin color.

  41. Al Sharpton remains an embarrassment to us black folks. This is why many people don’t take ACTUAL racism seriously; he cries wolf too many times with crap like this…

  42. All I can say is that sharpton needs to shut his mouth. Him and jackson have been making us all look bad.

  43. “Sharpton is an opportunist but he is still a part of history and was in fact present in the thick of the civil rights movement.”
    So was Robert Byrd.

  44. “If your grandparents weren’t racist pricks there would have never had to even BE a civil rights movement NOW THINK ON THAT!”
You don’t know me and you don’t know my grandparents. You’re just another racist piece of trash, looking for a handout. No different from Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and their ilk.

  45. Al Sharpton used to be a fat, useless, blubbering moron. He lost a lot of weight, but he’s still a useless, blubbering moron.
Renard, you need to get a grip. Nobody here is saying that blacks were never discriminated against. Nobody here is saying that there are no racists anymore.
Besides, what is racism if not the favoring of one person over another simply by virtue of their color? Would Sharpton be spewing this hateful crap if the article had said that Coughlin had tightened the noose around Eli Manning’s neck? I think not. Ever heard of the NAACP? You think THAT’S not racist?
What happened in the past is terrible, but it’s in the PAST. Sharpton needs to let it go. He needs to stop looking for racist undertones in everythingthat happens. This ridiculous and fake “righteous indignation” does nothing but get his name in the press, and everyone knows it.

  46. Racism is big business for guys like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. If not for racism, going on the intelligence that they’ve displayed over the years, they’d be mowing my yard right now. It’s in their best interest to keep the racism fire burning, so that’s what they do. They don’t want to realize true racial equality. That would mean the death of them as public figures, and it would kill their incomes. They’re working to keep black people down harder than any white devil not named Democratic Senator Robert Byrd ever has.

  47. can one of you idiots explain what the “race card” is? seems that the history of this country isn’t speaking loud enough anymore. the race card was created by white people for the convenience of downplaying claims of racism by black people. it’s a handy tool, but it’s pathetic in itself.
and mrs. fox fairytas, how about taking my entire comment as a whole and seeing what other clever responses you can come up with? if your grandparents were born and raised in america then more than likely they participated in discrimination against black people. and if your grandparents by some act of god weren’t racist, then their parents and grandparents 100% were.
and i’m not looking for any handouts, i have a very good job thanks. if i’m “reverse racist”, it’s only because of the forward racists.

  48. What noose? What zero tolerance? It was 18 minutes of benching. Oh, that’s right, he’s a highly paid star, so 18 minutes is enough.

  49. “So was Robert Byrd.”
i don’t give a crap about robert byrd. he’s not the subject of this discussion.

You are right….. If you play the race card all of the time, it means nothing. That’s the problem with Jackson & Sharpton. They use it so often, that when a real case of racsims occurs….nobody cares. NFL teams really don’t care what color you are. They care if you can play ball and help them win ball games.

  51. Everytime this idiot opens his mouth, he is going apeshit over absolutely nothing, whoops, I guess I crossed the line there.

  52. AL SHARPTON:
You owe me and every other white american an apology for constantly blaming the white man for supressing Black Americans. YOU sir, are supressing the very people you claim to be protecting. Every black american should hold you & your ilk responsible for that. You are the ones holding people back; You are the ones constantly fueling the racist fire.
Hmm…lets think. If everyone was treated equally; would you still have a job?
Mr. Sharpton- Its quite clear to me that you need to keep people supressed, otherwise you’re nothing.

  53. Sharpton and Jackson have to keep the idea that there is still rampant racism alive. Otherwise they’d both have to go out and get real jobs. Instead they live in high style off the backs of the people they claim to defend. The Rev stuff is a real crock!!!!

  54. Renard, you should seek anger management therapy. Its very clear you have issues that need to be dealt with.

  55. Sharpton is a complete fraud, why anybody gives a rat’s ass what he says is beyond my comprehension.

  56. Another load of Politically Correct crap. Sharpton needs to apologize for opening his big mouth to get headlines. Quit looking for something to get upset over ! If anyone took it as a racist statement, BOO HOO, GET OVER IT !

  57. @recard: In two different posts you’ve claimed all of our grandparents were racist. This is a generalization of the worst kind.
You’re free to assume bad things about people you don’t know and have never met. But the next time you feel outraged when someone makes assumptions about you or your ancestors, you might want to ask yourself if you’ve ever done the same thing. The answer is – yes.

  58. “To make such a blatant racist statement about an African-American football player with a neck injury is completely unacceptable,”
Is the article even about his neck injury?

No they shouldn’t. Why apologize for something when you did nothing wrong? If someone chooses to look too deep into it and be offended, that’s their problem. No one on the papers staff should have to apologize for it.
Seriously, we as American’s need to stop being such pansies and apologizing for every little thing that someone gets pissed off about. It’s time for us to lift our collective skirts, grab our balls and man up a bit.

  60. I have to chuckle at the comments. As I have said before, it’s the rest of America that gives Sharpton his forum. Here in NYC, with the exception of his small band of “groupies”, Sharpton is viewed like NYC’s infamous August weather. It’s unpleasant, you can’t stand it when it’s around, it makes the City smell bad, BUT before you know it, September comes and it all goes away. Don’t pay any attention to it and it leaves. As for the Post, based on very informal years of viewing who is reading what on the subway, the Post has a fairly large number of black readers. Personally, I think it’s a rag that believes Brad and Angelina are what is really important news, but I don’t believe it to be racist. If it was, it could not financially survive in NYC. Whites are a numerical minority in NYC, so any company and/or entity that is blatantly racist, will go out of business here. Living in such an ethnically diverse area, in such close quarters, teaches you pretty fast that you can’t judge someone by skin color. I have met assholes from every corner of the globe and I have met amazing people that I would trust with the lives of my children. Skin color, religion, nation of origin – none of it tells you anything definitive about another person.

  61. Al Sharpton, the REVEREND Al Sharpton. What a joke. Hey Al, remember that little line in the Good Book? You know the one “turn the other cheek.” I CANNOT wait for Barack Obama to be elected. Then all of your excuses are gone Al. All of the closet racists of all races will have no more excuses. THAT alone is reason enough to vote for Obama.

THESE ARE SOME NEAT LITTLE QUIPS LADIES, BUT TRY TO ACTUALLY RESPOND TO MY IRREFUTABLE WORDS. AND TO THE MORON WHO IS WHINING ABOUT WHAT I SAID ABOUT HIS GRANDPARENTS, NOT ONCE HAVE YOU DENIED THEY WERE RACISTS. HOW HILARIOUS.

So what you’re saying is you want us to ask our grandparents if they are now or were racist back in the day? God, you’re a bigger moron that I originally gave you credit for. Seriously, even if my grandparents were racist, that doesn’t automatically make me racist. That you think so does make you ignorant though.

  65. “So what you’re saying is you want us to ask our grandparents if they are now or were racist back in the day?”
I DON’T WANT YOU TO ASK THEM ANYTHING. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SAY WHERE THEY LIVED WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG, AND THAT WILL BE ENOUGH. YOU WANT TO PUT THE BURDEN OF PROOF ON ME BECAUSE OF A SO-CALLED GENERALIZATION, AS IF THIS COUNTRY’S HISTORY IS A FIGMENT OF IMAGINATION. WHY WAS THERE A CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT? PLEASE ANSWER THAT. WHY DID AFFIRMATIVE ACTION NEED TO BE CREATED? IT’S NOT BLACK PEOPLE’S FAULT THAT WE WERE TREATED THE WAY WE WERE TREATED, AND IT’S NOT OUR JOBS TO ACT LIKE IT NEVER HAPPENED. AND THAT IS BECAUSE IT IS STILL HAPPENING COVERTLY. I LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE BLACK PEOPLE ARE SILENTLY NOT ALLOWED TO OWN ANY COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS. THERE IS ALWAYS A “REASON” THEY HAVE TO BE SHUT DOWN OR RELOCATED.

  66. @retard:
It’s so funny that you keep bringing up history. Have you ever heard of the “Atlantic Slave Trade?” If not, look it up. You’ll find that it was the African people who captured and then sold their own people for the purpose of slavery not only to us but to South Africa, Brazil and other nations.
And upon further review of your asinine comments, it really sounds like you’re the racist. By trying to paint our grandparents, and us by proxy, with the same brush based on where they lived, you’re proving that you’re no better than the folks you lay accusation to.

  67. renard, did you generalize about everyones grandparents? My grandma came here from Germany during ww2.
the others livedup north where there weren’t many black people back then, so I don’t think I would ask them if they are rascist since they are dead but I am sure they weren’t but people like you stereotype white people and then cry like babies when somebody does it to you! How old are you? 12? Grow up. Not everybody is after you. I do know that alot of the south still has those racial feelings but don’t lump everyone into one stereotype or you aren’t any better than any of the people who conspire against the black businesses.

  68. When is “the Reverend,” going to get a real job?
The “man,” that was holding you down, I thought was ” Imas ?”
Concentrate on saving souls or something productive, HuH…

  69. I normally stay out of this crap, but it’s funny to listen to all of the old stereotypes get bandied about! I’m Black, and I wasn’t offended at all by the line. I’ve gotten over all the bullshit about sterotypes. However, for you white people that try to say everything is fine, or will be when Obama is elected, get a clue! I work in scrubs at a hospital every day, I’m fat, 5 foot 6, couldn’t run if a gun was put to my head, but every time I step on an elevator with a white womane she clutches her purse like I’m a thief!! Sterotypical racism is alive and well, boys and girls! But I’ll say this, it’s just as prevalent in the Black community as it is the white! EVERBODY needs to grow up and get over it!!!

  70. The dude with the Kevin Gilbride comment, THAT WAS HILARIOUS!!!! He needs a little Buddy Ryan in his life!!!

  71. “and mrs. fox fairytas, how about taking my entire comment as a whole”
Because the entire paragraph was too much stupid bullshit to take.

  72. “I’m fat, 5 foot 6, couldn’t run if a gun was put to my head, but every time I step on an elevator with a white womane she clutches her purse like I’m a thief!”
You know, that’s funny because I see the same things and I’m a white guy.

  73. “You know, that’s funny because I see the same things and I’m a white guy.”
White women clutch their purses from you, too?!?! You sure you don’t have a little Brotha in you???!!! LMAO!!!
