FATE OF CRENNEL, SAVAGE TO BE DETERMINED AFTER SEASON

Browns coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Phil Savage are undoubtedly on the hot seat, but owner Randy Lerner says no firing will be coming during the season.
”I’m going to take the issues and concerns and criticisms very seriously and think through them and deal with them in January,” Lerner told the Beacon Journal today. ”Hopefully late January.”
Lerner says he hasn’t made up his mind about either Crennel or Savage. But reading between the lines, it sounds like Savage’s job is safer than Crennel’s, because Lerner thinks the Browns’ roster is talented.
Asked if Cleveland could be a playoff team in 2009, Lerner answered, ”Yeah, I sense it could be,” adding, ”We’ve got to win and they’ve got to live up to their potential. When you go 10-6 and have six Pro Bowlers, there are signs you have the right people.”
Lerner went on to describe the Browns as “a very, very strong group of players who are underperforming.”
As for the man who has most often been mentioned as a possible replacement for Crennel? Lerner said he has not contacted Bill Cowher.

  1. A couple weeks ago there was a article on this site saying that the “mulligan” rule could be in effect for Savage. That being that as a rule of thumb a GM usually gets to hire two head coaches. I would like to point out that Savage was hired only a few days prior to Crennel and had little or no input into the hiring process. The Randy Lerner/John Collins brain trust hired Crennel. Savage has done a good job for the most part. This current roster is the most talented in the 30 plus yrs. I’ve been a fan. Savage is maybe only 15% of the problem. With the other 85% falling on an inept head coach and an disinterested owner.

  2. Geeez! What on Earth will you report about when the season ends, Crennel is fired, and Cowher stays in broadcasting?

  3. The thing that worries me most: he said he “has put the right people in place to take care of the day-to-day affairs.”
These are the people that can’t produce a winning record nor a playoff appearance, but can embarrass themselves with startling regularity.
As a Browns fan, his comments today give me no hope whatsoever.

  4. The Fat Man is GONE. Jammies would be an idiot to alienate his fan base by keeping that buffoon around another year.

Savage did have input into hiring Crennel. But even if he did not, Savage extended his contract last year, so he’s in effect decided twice that Romeo was the right guy for the organization.
As far as I’m concerned, that was his mulligan. He may be the best personnel guy in the business, but he is inept when it comes to just about every other facet of his job. Even if Savage is allowed to remain onboard and hire a new coach, he’s going to continue to embarrass this organization and drive it into the ground.
What has he done to indicate otherwise?

  6. i think u try to hang on to chud and see if he can work w the new head coach…… only problem with Phil Savage is the players don’t trust him and the f bomb dropping with a fan is not a good image for the club……. Romeo is set hes got a new contract for going 10-6 last year…..

  7. I’m not tryin’ to justify keeping Phil Savage as GM. All I’m sayin’ is Phildo is the lesser of the three evils.

  8. “But even if he did not, Savage extended his contract last year, so he’s in effect decided twice that Romeo was the right guy for the organization.”
Romeo’s extension came at Lerner’s request — the intention was to give fans the impression that the organization is willing to commit to winning. If you recall, Savage was also extended. Even when Romeo wouldn’t let Carthon go, Phil indeed stepped in and got rid of him.
I’ve heard rumblings that Savage is somewhat of a “power freak” but it is my understanding that because it was Phil’s decision to get rid of Mo Carthon, Romeo was given liberty to fire Todd Grantham and promote Mel Tucker. It is also my understanding that the decision to give Romeo that option was handed down from Lerner.
I’m not sticking up for anybody because I’m still on the fence, but Savage has definitely made improvements to this team and has been overshadowed by poor coaching. The significant personnel changes (i.e. coach/GM extensions) came from the ownership level.

  9. If a man ever wanted fired it’s Romeo. Savage should pay 1/2 of his salary after Crennel is let go. Romeo is so in over his head. He knows he sucks at being a head coach. Marty or Billick would be a good fit in Cleveland, but NEVER Cowher.

  10. Yeah. . . except, of the six Pro Bowlers, one is a benched QB who sucks, a second is a long snapper, a third is a return man, a fourth is a disgruntled mentally deranged tight end who can’t even practice with the team because of his myriad injuries, and a fifth is a head case receiver who leads the league in drops. And then there’s Joe Thomas, who has dropped off this year, though he certainly appears to be a solid contributor.

  11. “Romeo’s extension came at Lerner’s request — the intention was to give fans the impression that the organization is willing to commit to winning. If you recall, Savage was also extended. Even when Romeo wouldn’t let Carthon go, Phil indeed stepped in and got rid of him.”
That may be the case, but if so, then it flies in the face of everything Lerner says he stands for, which is that he gets out of the way and lets his hires make their own decisions and do their jobs without interference. By the assumed chain of command, it would have been Savage’s call to keep Romeo, and Lerner’s call to extend Savage.
And the whole Carthon thing should have been the final straw for Romeo, in my book. I don’t think that helps Savage’s case at all… to me, it was a clear example of Romeo’s persistent poor judgment. Romeo proved he couldn’t surround himself with a qualified staff, and should have been replaced… instead, his authority was undercut (Romeo’s job was threatened if he refused to fire Carthon) and Romeo was kept around in the interest of consistency… which to me was pure idiocy as well. When your team is losing year in and year out, why is it desirable to continue doing so? Only in Cleveland…
I know you said you’re on the fence with regards to Savage, xskippzx, so I’m not trying to be argumentative with you. It just drives me nuts to see what we’re willing to settle for as Cleveland fans.
Savage/Crennel/Lerner have brought us zero superbowls. Zero playoff appearances. One fluke yr with a winning record. And _countless_ embarrassments that have proven them to be a completely unprofessional organization, be it staph infections, the soldja crying about not getting his get-well flowers, the GM emailing profanities to fans, the HC kicking field goals when we’re down four touchdowns, whatever… and in spite of all that, these forums (at PFT and elsewhere) are full of countless people defending these incompetents.
There is no team in the NFL that would make Romeo its HC right now, and there is no team in the NFL that would hire Savage as GM right now–I’d bet my house on it. Yet, in Cleveland, they extend your contract!
Both Savage and Crennel are complete embarrassments. And since it’s Randy’s team and therefore his responsibility to structure his organization, the blame ultimately falls at his feet. I’ll say it again, Al Lerner never would have stood for the crap we see being played out in Berea today. And neither would any other sensible NFL owner.

  12. Hey Man…. Randys gonna deal it in January, so thats next year right… very consistent…. we’ve been hearing next year for 44 years now…. the 1 consistent since 99…. Randy Lerner, fire yourself dude…. you care my butt…. the only reason u might care now is the banking industry is upside down thanks to Ceos that are your friends I’ m sure…. so now you want the Cleveland fans to think you care……sell our team… you shouldve never got owner when we fought for our hometeam…. it shouldve been awarded to residents as stock holders like in greenbay….u have as much passion as a stick.

  13. Phil Savage is a very talented scout, but that doesn’t mean he’s a great personel guy. His track record on draft picks is pretty solid, but his track record on free agents is pretty mediocre. I’d love to see him stick around, but relinquish his stranglehold on personel decisions. If only we could find a head coach who could be a good point man on personel decisions. . .

  14. barking tuna there was NO ONE that wanted to hire crennel when the browns hired him! this guy is a freakin fat joke of a head coach. so over his head it’s pathetic. same excuse after every game, “i don’t know” ” i don’t have a clue” ” i am not sure” then he lies about pulling quinn he’s just a freakin joke

  15. vincelombardi – ??
I’m not sure if you got the idea that I’m a Romeo supporter–I’m with you.
I thought it was pretty obvious he wasn’t HC material before the end of his second year, and was out of my mind when they gave him a contract extension for not making the playoffs last year.

  16. I think Coach chin will be in the mix in Cleveland but it will have to a perfect situation, like Savage being gone. I still think the spit will fly in Carolina in the next couple of years.
