PACKERS GET THIRD-ROUNDER FOR FAVRE

With the Jets not making the playoffs, the terms of compensation for the trade that brought quarterback Brett Favre to New York are complete.  Nearly.
As Adam Schefter of NFL Network points out, the Packers will get a third-round pick for Favre.
The base value of the trade was a fourth-round pick.  With Favre playing in more than 50 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, the pick upgraded to a third-round selection.
But as Schefter pointed out in August, the Jets will get a seventh-round pick back from the Packers in 2010 if Favre retires after one season with the Jets.

  1. well what if he retires than performs his customary unretirement again? and then changes his mind back and forth a few more times before the next season…

  2. Wow, that hurts.
I’m willing to bet that third rounder could easily have also lead the NFL in interceptions.
Way to ruin your legacy, dipshit. Hope it was worth it.

  3. so the Jets gave up a 3rd rounder, lost Chad Pennington, didn’t make the playoffs and now will enter 2009 with Kellen Clemens atop the depth chart (after a three month game of “will I or won’t I” by Lord Favre).
Man, Tannenbaum’s off to a rocky start.
The only thing that could possibly go worse would be shipping a boatload of picks and warm bodies to Detroit for the keys to Bradford/Stafford.

  4. “Hey Mike, can you find out if Mangini is at the bottom of the East River yet? ”
That fat bastard is the epitome of float.

  5. Okay now we have a top ten pick, a high second rounder, and two relatively high third rounders… please Ted, I beg you. Use the two and two threes to trade for a couple of playmakers… we need a big-time pass rusher opposite of Kampman and a stud Outside Linebacker to replace Poppinga. Do not draft more losers or trade back and stockpile picks. We have plenty of young talent to breed. Trade these picks. Take a lesson from the Vikes with Allen.

  6. So, did Ted Thompson really make a bad decison in getting rid of Favre? Yes and no … yes, mainly because of how prolonged the ordeal was prior to the trade, and no, because it’s clear Rodgers can play qb at a high level. Rodgers posted better numbers across the board than ol’ #4 .. give or take a stat or two.
Both team failed to make the playoffs. Favre would have probably meant another win or two for the Packers, but I doubt they would have made the playoffs with him. 2009 now looks brighter because the Packers will enter the season with a seasoned 25 year old qb as compared to a 40 year old vet, or unseasoned 25 year old qb.
Who wins out … TT vs. Favre? I say Ted Thompson wins on points.

  7. A third rounder? Ted Thompson will trade it for 3 7th rounders and none of them will make the squad. After all, it was Ted Thompson that traded DT Cory Williams for a second rounder and promptly turn that into a 3rd stringer QB that should have been cut based on performance but was kept on the squad because Thompson’s ego wouldn’t let him admit that the guy basically sucks.

  8. Not too shabby for Ted Thompson. Earlier this summer the divorce looked like a huge fiasco. Now, after the season, it looks like Thompson made the right call sticking to his guns (Rodgers) and sending Favre to the Jets. If Favre would have stayed retired, the Pack wouldn’t have gotten anything for him. Now they get a third in 2009. Not bad at all.
Favre looks shot. I’m betting he’s not coming back for 2009.

  9. Yea, well… Everyone got screwed. Favre got screwed, Jets got screwed, GB was screwed… No one is innocent here.
Favre should never have went to the Jets to begin with. Bad move.
He would have been better off almost any where but there.

  10. GregmfinJennings, do you really think that you are a stud DE and an OLB away from an NFCN title next year? Your O is good, but your D has quite a few holes. I don’t see Harris and Woodson making it too many more years.

  11. Wow, its a shame how fans know think the trade was bad. 20 weeks ago Jets fans were suckin Farve off, know he sucks, and the the trade shoudn’t have happened. But when you thibk about it. These are the same fans that root for the Yankees. NY fans are horse shit!

  12. So the Jets (ha ha) lose a third rounder, pay a $12M salary, and lose Pennington, and Miami pays Chad 3 or 4 Million and look what they wind up with!!!!
I love this! I hope Favre comes back again. Some AFC East corners need Pro Bowl nods!
Oh and they drafted Gholston!!! LOLZ
Jets suck. Allow now right in the division again!

  13. Let’s get this straight. They Jets would not have been better off with Pennington. In 8 years, he took them to the playoffs 3 times.
    Get over it!

  14. “GregmfinJennings, do you really think th’at you are a stud DE and an OLB away from an NFCN title next year?”
Other than the Lions who isn’t one player away from the NFCN title. The Vikings are the worst team in the playoffs. Hell, as bad as the division is, I’d dare say the Lions are one HC or GM away from winning the damn thing.

  15. “Yea, well… Everyone got screwed. Favre got screwed, Jets got screwed, GB was screwed… No one is innocent here.”
Fins made out like a bandit. Like a bandit heading to the PLAYOFFS BABY!!!

  16. That’s a great deal for GB. They weren’t making the playoffs with or without Lord Favre. They’ve started to build their team around Rodgers, which in the long run is best for them, and they get a nice draft pick in exchange for the old man.

  17. “Let’s get this straight. They Jets would not have been better off with Pennington. In 8 years, he took them to the playoffs 3 times.”
They never tried to tweak their offense to suite their QB, hence the problem. Its a classic “square peg, round hole” situation. After that 2002 season I was always high on Pennington but they promptly got away from his strengths and tried to force him into throwing down field.
And some teams would be very thankful for 3 trips to the playoffs in 8 years.

  18. Not bad. The Jets paid a third round pick in 2009 to guarantee the Miami Dolphins the AFC East division title and the most miraculous turnaround by a 1-15 team in league history. Not bad at all.

  19. evel kalamaknievel, I would have to give the honor of worst team in the playoffs to Arizona, who packed it in 3 weeks ago.

  20. Well, first off I would say that evel is right that any team any given year can with the North because that’s how up in the air it is. The Packers are right there. Then again so are the Bears and Vikings. If we brought in two proven players at the positions I pointed out, it would definitely bolster the defense. Bob Sanders is definitely going to be shown the door imo so the new coordinator would have to find a way to get the job done and I think the Pack would definitely make the playoffs.
Let’s not forget that while the 13-3 record two seasons ago may have been overachieving, the 6-10 record this year is underachieving and a lot of those ten losses came in the fourth quarter and within four points or less. That being said, another offseason for Rodgers will only help. I expect them to rebound and adding two playmakers (barring available) would be a great start. But I’d also like to point out that luck plays a big part of it. If a team is lucky enough to avoid major injuries and the like, then their odds increase.

  21. we are not a stud pass rusher and OLB away from the NFCC game. we are a stud pass rusher and a few decent run blocking OL away. the packers defense is fine, other than the fact they can’t put pressure on the opposing QB. harris may be done but woodson is still one of the best in the entire league. tramon williams PROVED he can roll with the big boys, and a pass rush is not only what our entire defense is predicated on but will do freakni wonders for how well the secondary performs. period.

  22. difference between last year and this year- 7 losses by 4 points or less. i would say that green bay could easily be back near the top of the NFC next year with the right moves in the off season.

  23. Last season we gave away Wes Welker to the pats and paid for it, and gave the Chargers Chris Chambers and paid for it. HOWEVER WE TRADED BOTH AWAY for compensation!
Then this year we traded Jason Taylor to the lowly redskins and it turned out to be a huge trade FOR US! Then we stripped Fasano from the Cowboys and picked up Pennington for FREE!!!! Its about time things start going our way for a f’n change!
Ow, and hows Gholston working out for your JETS? Hmmm, Philip Merling (our 08 DE draft pick, intercepted Brett for a touchdown!) HA AH AH AH AH AH AHAH AHA GO FINS!

  24. I wonder how the getting the Packers’ seventh round pick is going to help the Jets when Queen Brett makes his decision in early October of 2009.

  25. The Packers are the class of the Norris. Easily. TT will bring in a DE and DT and retire Bob Sanders. Jenkins, Bigby will return and Hawk and Collins will be healthy. We will have a much, much tougher D.
The O can play with the best of them. Imagine what the O will do when we get two more stops per game.
Llook for World Championship No. 13 for the Green Bay Packers in 2009.
The biggest problem we have is shipping out all the anti-Packer “fans”- the whiners and crybabies, quitters and losers – to the ViQueens where they belong.
Hopefully these sad fricking people will leave on their own. Please pick up your Violet crap on your way out.

  26. Gravedigger, whoever you are, I love you, man! This may be the most intelligent post from a packer fan I’ve ever seen here!

Wow. I’ve never seen anyone go lower than 1 on their post rating. You’re like the Rod Marinelli of PFT. “I’m not 0.99! You’re 0.99!”

  28. The Pack is the class of the NFC North — is your brain still frozen or inebriated from yesterday’s stirring victory over the Kittens? You couldn’t even beat the Bears the other night. The Pack is now and will remain irrelevant — Florio only posts cheeser crap to increase his website traffic.

  29. “purpleguy”- is that an original?
Get clued, every caller-inner in the TC is some sort of “guy”. Probably to differentiate yourselves from the effeminate Barreiro All Pro Whiner?
You would know stirring right? After that earth-moving escape from the Midgets’s Third Stringers yesterday…………Enjoy it while you can because the Pack will be right back.
Face it: The Queens are just another expansion joke.
    Eagles 73
    Queens 3

Couldn’t beat the Bears? Considering both the Packers and Vikings split games with the Bears that’s a pretty crappy putdown.

  31. I love everyone that says “Man, we’re a stud LB away from the NFC Championship”, or ” All we need is a pass rush and we’ll win the North.” Remember last year? When you won the North. And went to the Championship game. With the same players you had this year, with one notable difference. And no, I’m not referring to Jon Ryan either. After 10 losses, how do you still stand by Thompson? Name one thing he did last off-season to improve the Packers’ chance of winning in 2008. And signing Brandon Chillar doesn’t count as significantly improving your team. Congrats on your 6-10 season (4-10 if you don’t count the Lions, which you shouldn’t).
