MANGINI OUT!

A league source tells us that the Jets have fired coach Eric Mangini.
The move will be announced at a 10:00 a.m. EST press conference.
Wow.
(As of 9:15 a.m. EST, the termination of Mangini has been confirmed by ESPN 1050 in New York, Jay Glazer of FOX, and Adam Schefter of NFL Network.  Per Glazer, owner Woody Johnson was “visibly upset and agitated” after Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins.)
And so it becomes clear that Mangini has taken the fall for a season of unfulfilled expectations after G.M. Mike Tannenbaum broke from the concept of building through the draft and rounded up a bunch of high-priced veterans.
At the press conference, it’ll be interesting to see what if anything Johnson says regarding his comments from March 2008, during which he declared that Mangini and Tannenbaum “absolutely” would be back in 2009.
“I really think it takes time to build,” Johnson said.  “You can’t do it in one season.”
We’ll have more to say about this one after the press conference.

  1. Too bad – Looks like he was really turning things around, what with his young talented QB and TONS of cap space for 2009…….
The franchise is screwed, and you can that Farve and Mangini for a LARGE part of that.

  2. As a Jet fan, I hope the fan base is happy. It’s not that Mangini did a good job. The team didn’t quit on him and that’s important This move is just another “Same Old Jets” maneuver.
They had better have the next head coach already on board. And he must be a clear upgrade to Mangini. If not, the team is just treading the same water they have been for 40 years. Mangini’s QB cost him his job.

  3. How many coaches under Belichick have left and proven their worth somewhere else? **crickets**
That is why I can’t understand why the media seems to think that other coaches under Belichick would be getting their own gigs somewhere else. It doesn’t make much sense to me.

  4. Thank God for that…tannenbaum deserves to stay cos he gave magini all the tools to succeed! Lets get cowher into NY!

  5. Now bring in Holmgren, which will motivate Favre to actually work out this offseason, and we’ll be 11-5 next yr.

  6. If it is true, this is a bad move by the J-E-T organization. Mangenius deserved one more year. Maybe they were moved to fire Mangini because they heard that Rod Marinelli was available….

  7. Actually, to be fair to Mangini….he was saddled with a QB who I’m starting to think may be borderline retarded.

  8. Well, maybe Crennel can reunite in NE. Oh, wait, Mangini burnt that bridge with Spygate. Well, maybe he can become the head coach of a girls pop warner team or something.

  9. LMAO. You know it’s bad in Jet-Land when the only positive is that the loss kept the Patriots out of the playoffs…that’s how pathetic things have become for Gangrene.

  10. the jets hadn’t attacked free agency w/aggressiveness ever. it was ok for teams like new england and philly to sign big time FAs, but not the jets?
    they didn’t BUILD through FA.
Washington Coles, Cotchery, Baker, Keller, Ferguson, Mangold, Moore, Ellis, Harris, Thomas, Revis, and Rhodes were all draft picks and all started or were key players. Elam was an undrafted FA.
Their cap space, w/a couple of obvious restructures, could be around $20 M after they cut Favre. Yes, they need a qb, OBVIOUSLY, but $20 M under needing a QB isn’t exactly cap hell. It’s enough to maneuver.

  11. Mangini sucks but you can’t pin them losing the last 5 games of the season on him. Favre was being a good team player early on but his EGO took over late in the season and he became the Favre that got his @$$ kicked out of Green Bay. (I know it was only 4 of 5 but those pathetic Bills gift wrapped a win for the Jets.)

  12. Whoever cooked up the idea to bring in Favre should be fired. They were about 10 years late on that washed up diva. Certainly Mangini bears much of the blame but Vince Lombardi would have lost that game yesterday as well with Diva Favre under center.

  13. Ha ha…no one likes a rat…how true!
I hope RAC comes back to NE…we need him to help out that defense. It hasn’t been the same under Pees. But back to Mangini…
Yup…he may have a tougher time catching on with a team after his spygate thing. Say what you will, I think there were a few people irked by his “ratting out” the Pats. It was necessary for him to do, no doubt about that…but I think it gave some football peeps some pause.
I think the GM should be on the block for bringing in Favre. Mangini has always been a ball-security, fundamentals-first, kind of coach. Favre is just the opposite and at that point in his career, was not going to change. Bad pairing…Pennington would have been a better fit for the Jets.

  14. Watching that game yesterday….Mangini loooked so damn miserable.
He really is a miserable SOB who is way over his head as a head coach
Never have been happier @ someone getting canned.
He really is a sourpuss RAT that everyone calls him…Hope he’s out of NFL for good.

  15. the jets hadn’t attacked free agency w/aggressiveness ever. it was ok for teams like new england and philly to sign big time FAs, but not the jets?
    Blah, blah, blah.
4 words for the Jets fans: Vernon Gholston, Jerrod Mayo.
    Bawahahah-ha-HA-HA!

  16. The embarrassment isn’t over yet though- now they have to watch their lousy QB play in the Pro Bowl that Chad Pennington isn’t good enough for. I hope when Favre goes to the hall they put a little note at the end of his plaque that says, “And every time he had a bad game, he was hurt.”

  17. 7 Pro Bowlers. ROFLMAO! Handing the Dolphins the QB they needed to win the Division with no compensation whatsoever! ROFLMAO! Yup, he’s a genius all right! ROFLMAO!
I was hoping they’d keep him so the Jets would continue to never really be a threat in the division.
In the end, the fat rat btard, the orhganization and their entire fan base got exactly what they derved.

  18. How is Tannebaum getting a pass on all of this? Mangini and Favre are getting pummeled, but T-Baum deserves a bunch of the blame also. They’re out a HC today, probably need a new QB, they are screwed on the Cap, they don’t have a full complement of draft choices, a bunch of the FA’S they picked up this past year are overpaid and some will start looking a little old. T-Baum bet (and lost) the farm in 08.

  19. the gm outta be the canned one…. he’s the guy that brought in a washed up brett cry baby favre and cut a playoff bound qb….. Eric got the knife in the back by another idiot front office snake.

  20. From Mangenius to Mangidiot in three years. Can we please talk about the good NY team now who could not buy a back page this season with King Favre in town?

  21. Favre looked pathetic, he’s the reason they lost to the Fins. But make no mistake about it fins fans, Ronnie Brown makes that offense go not Chad Pennington. Chad Pennington has been good, at times great, but Ronnie Brown is a superstar in my opinion. Good luck in the playoffs. As far as Mangini goes, I really thought he was going to pull Favre after the second INT.

  22. “Horrible news.
Now there’s a chance they’ll bring in someone competent. ”
When have the Jets EVER done that?
Oh wait… the day they brought in Bill Belichick… and he was smart enough to see how bad it was and bailed…

  23. I know I speak for all other team fans in the AFC East when I say “Nooooo!”
Keep him Woody! He’s a genius!
You only spent $140 million in the offseason and brought in a HoF QB and had the benefit of a Bradyless season. How could you be expecting more than third place in the AFC East?
I guess the good news for the Jets is that Herm Edwards should be available (or Rich Kotite).

  24. Gholston, HA HA HA!!!!!! Who is being held accountable for that one? Dwayne Robertson is another. This team screws up so many drafts by paying too much attention to who’s rising at the scouting combines.

  25. Tannenbaum sucks, I just saw some of his comments from the press conference, talk about a disingenuous prick. Lord Farve sunk the good ship Jests the past 5 weeks and he was T-Baums guy. T-Baum took all the credit for signing him in August but can’t get far enough away and throw the blame on Mangina in December. Mangina had to go, but T-Baum getting a pass is BS. He’s perfect for NY though.

  26. I think the person who brought in Farve should have been fired. He single handedly killed the Jets with this inept passing.

  27. Hmmm, where is the “Karma is a bitch” crowd?
Seems an appropriate time to break that one out and rejoice.

  28. I’m sorry to see him go…at least we knew they would suck. Mangini had three major problems, 1) He thought he was Bill Belichick (nice try). 2)Favre is the QB. 3)#’s 1 and 2 = all ego!

  29. dutch_jetsfan: Didn’t you learn anything from Dan Snyder and the Steinbrenners? Just because you sign the all pro guys every year doesn’t mean you succeed.

  30. god, jets fans and pats fans are both total toolbags.
the only thing the pats fans can take solace in now that their team got eliminated is that the jets fared just as well and the guy who they’re bitter about leaving and then blowing the whistle on their coach cheating got fired.
jets fans are now deciding that Favre is a diva and that he sucks and tannenbaum should be fired for bringing him in and all. 4 months after they were begging for pennington to get dropped, then decided the jets were shoo-ins for the superbowl because they have Favre.
pats fans, have fun not watching your team in january for once. jets fans, have fun getting dicked around by favre until camp starts about whether he’s gonna retire or not. the rest of us will enjoy it, trust me. you’re all retards.

  31. hey Ralphie, if that’s what makes you feel good then go for it. i’ll be watching my team in january.
i actually like the jets a lot, they’re my second favorite team. i just think the entire organization sucks. no reason to fire mangini. tannenbaum needs to go instead. it’s not eric’s fault that favre collapsed when it matters yet again. it’s not his fault tannenbaum put that team together or dicked over pennington. pennington with that team is a 12-4 team at least. he works in the system. favre just doesn’t. i’m sorry, but i can’t stand how hypocritical the jets fans have gotten about all this. before it was MANGENIUS LOL FAVRE SUPERBOWL and now it’s “whoever’s idea it was to bring in Favre, he should get fired.” come on already, pick a side and stick with it.

  32. why does tannenbaum have a job?he’s a cap specialist
that fancies himself as a gm.he’s a know nothing clown.
blaming everything on mangini is bs.
by the way, little woody is lucky his father was born before
    him.

  33. pats fan here, i hate mangini with a fiery hate…but you know what, he just got SCREWED BY AN OLD SHITTY QB WHO MAKES HORRIBLE DECISIONS WITH THE BALL. HOW THE HELL DID TANNENBAUM KEEP HIS JOB??? SERIOUSLY??? HE IS THE MORON WHO GOT FAVRE AND CUT PENNINGTON, NOT MANGINI. SO, RETARDED JET FANS, YOU JUST LOST A GREAT COACH. WANT TO HEAR BELICHICKS FIRST 3 SEASONS IN NE?? 5-11, 11-5(SUPER BOWL, LUCKY ONE, BUT WE WILL TAKE IT)9-7. I UNDERSTAND MANGINI HAD A GREAT START AND SEEMED TO FIZZLE, BUT THAT TEAM THAT WAS WINNING IN 06 SHOULDNT HAVE, THAT WAS GREAT COACHING. LAST YEAR, NO OFFENSIVE OR DEFENSIVE LINE, THIS YEAR, WELL, WHEN FAVRE WASNT BITCHING AND STATING WITHIN THE PLAN, THE JETS WERE TOUGH, AS SOON AS HE STARTING SLINGING, HE START SUCKING, SAME “OLD” BRETT FAVRE. YOU FANS WHO WANT HIM GONE ARE JUST RETARDED. HAHAHAHAHA, I HATE THE JETS, I CANT BELIEVE I HAVE TO BE THE VOICE OF REASON

  34. gotta say there’s a ton of irony in sim448 calling me a twat and a douchebag right after agreeing with all my points basically. he’d probably make a little more sense if he turned the caps lock off, it’s a sign of retardation.
