ROD'S REVENGE

In what will likely be his last chat with the Detroit media unless and until his new team, the Bears, faces the Lions on the field (I have a feeling that the two teams might play each other this year), former Lions coach Rod Marinelli signed off with this farwell:
Goodbye, ladies,” Marinelli said, according to Tom Kowalksi of the Mlive.com.
(Holy crap, Marinelli really is Frank Barone.)
He also greeted the reporters by calling them “ladies.”
In between, Marinelli said nothing.
Kowalski reports that, as Marinelli delivered his parting shot, he “jerked his thumb in the air, as to say ‘Get the hell out of here.'”
Also, Kowalski writes that Marinelli “didn’t like reporters in Detroit and called us a litany of unflattering names behind closed doors.”
If Marinelli had spent less time worrying about the media and more time worrying about his job, maybe he would have won more than 10 of 48 games — and more than one of his last 24.

  1. I doubt it Mike. You yourself have dedicated more than a few posts to rightfully making fun of the F.O. and talent evaluating structure and personnel they had there in Detroit. Bill Belichick, Bill Cowher, Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh…hell go back to Lombardi and take your pick, NO ONE was going to make chicken soup out of the mountain sized pile of chicken crap they have going there in Detroit. Hell even Millen now openly admits he was in over his head. Marinelli was about last on the list of things wrong with that franchise so how would anyone accurately gauge his job performance? Furthermore, you were also part of the mob crying foul when that douchebag reporter started crossing into familial lines that had nothing to do with Football. I think the guy’s lucky Rod didn’t jump over the podium and throw the jerk the beat down he deserved. If anyone has a right to be bitter about the media it’s Marinelli.

  2. “If Marinelli had spent less time worry about the media and more time about his job, maybe he would have won more than 10 of 48 games — and more than one of his last 24.”
    That is rich.

  3. Not sure what is worse, reporters thinking they are the most important part of the game or the coaches who tolerate them. Go get em Rod!

  4. You know you can’t really put too much blame on Marinelli for the Lions sucking so much.
I don’t think any coach could have squeaked a win out of that roster.

  5. Classy and classic. If you’re gonna be the first 0-16 coach ever, you might as well at least be quotable. John McKay would be proud. The torch has been passed.

  6. Bwahahahahahaaa!!!
Why did the Lions have to fire this guy? They’re doomed for eternity, it doesn’t matter who has the headset on. Just go for comedy and hire the goofiest f’er you can find. And they had him!
    “Goodbye, ladies!”

  7. Rod Marinelli is a douche bag…. and to think I felt sorry for Stiff Rod…..
Kowalski should have followed that up by asking how Rod’s daughter was getting along on grilled government cheese sandwiches……..

  8. Kowalski sure sounds like a bitter woman going through a divorce…..Remember Marinelli and Kowalski…. 1/2 of nothing is….nothing.

  9. “If Marinelli had spent less time worry about the media and more time about his job, maybe he would have won more than 10 of 48 games — and more than one of his last 24.”
Maybe if you spent more time reporting actual news and less time acting like H.Y.P.E…..I mean E.S.P.N., your wife would quit coming over bothering me.

  10. I’m sure worrying about the media had more to do with his record than the players he was given by Matt Millen. In fact I’m sure of it.

  11. The man can’t even address the fans that ultimately paid his salary? A salary which he acquired for doing nothing but help make the city of Detroit the laughing stock of the NFL? Shameful.
Maybe he can post that newpaper clipping right next to his trophy for accomplishing the MANLY feat of becoming the first coach to fail miserabely enough to lead his team to 0-16. Congrats, Rod. You’re the biggest douchebag of 2008.

  12. who says rod worried about them at all…
i think at least one former detroit area reporter is afraid he might have to work for a chicago paper.

come on now, detroit was the laughing stock of the nfl long before he showed up

  14. This was said to three Detroit beat reporters that casually approached him at Senior Bowl practice; it has nothing to do with refusing to address the “fans who paid his salary.”
It doesn’t help when the context of the story is only provided in an embedded link that readers may or may not explore, Mr. Florio.

  15. Rod is a fine football coach, I applaud him, and would have reacted the same way. I don’t put the Lions failure’s completely on him. A lot of good coaches can’t win there. Maybe that will change.
But until then, I don’t have a problem with a man like Marinelli dissing a bunch of news jockeys, who are big men behind their keyboards.

  16. If Marinelli had spent less time worry about the media and more time about his job, maybe he would have won more than 10 of 48 games — and more than one of his last 24.
uh have you seen the Lions roster? no way that was gonna happen. you’re better than this florio.

  17. Kowalski was a slappy for Marinelli the entire time the guy was in Detroit so to see Marinelli act like a pissy teenager to him really just screams to his overall professionalism.
Whatever. He called the reporters “ladies” but he’s the one that gets to have his name forever emblazoned in the annals of NFL history as the first coach to ever have a winless season. I’m willing to bet that image lasts far longer than the idea of an idiot coach slandering reporters who actually had his back.

  18. The man has a job and can take pride that he is no longer part of the loser Lions and they are.
The players deserve to be insulted. They signed the contracts and volutarily agreed to be part of the Lions.

  19. Seriously what did you expect?
He took his dream job and ended up with a huge turd. I dont know if he is a good coach or not but that was as bad of a situation as anyone could have gotten themselves into. The management sucked and the players were average at best with a few exceptions; namely Calvin Johnson and the surprisingly good Kevin Smith. With the abuse Rod took (deservedly or not) I think it was classy to only call them ladies, he easily could have mooned them with an F on one cheek and a U on the other.
Even their other “star” Roy Williams was awful and showed how bad he could be with Dallas. Seriously that was a ransom they got for him. I think Schwartz is the best thing they could have gotten north of Big Tuna. He is detail oriented and demands players to be accountable for their responsibilities. He also is a big stat guy and somewhat of a micromanager which I dont think is good for a contender, but for a team that needs a base to build on Schwartz will make it work.

  20. BFD, did you ever stop to consider what it might be like to have to deal with the media on a daily basis? The stupid inane questions, the attempts to trip you up, always on your guard about phrasing everything PC, I’m surprised Marinelli didn’t bitch-slap those reporters and wipe his shoes on their backs as he walked away.
If the press wants respect, the least they can do is demonstrate that they have some for themselves.

  21. Rod’s Daughter’s Husband’s Defense gave up 517 points and 2754 yards rushing.
And Rod deserved more respect than he showed the fans in Detroit with his idiotic ‘Stir the Cement’ ‘Pound the Rock’ ‘Dig the Tunnel’ bull crap ???
Now the jaggoff is in Chicago telling them that ‘if there are 10 mops you grab one’…… no Rod, you call the Septic Tank company and have them pump the field, you do not grap a mop and spread feces all over the house.

  22. Let’s see if I get this straight,as a reporter you can write or say anything you want about an athelete or coach but if they dare take offense or try and defend themselves or get right back at you they are the jerks?I say good for maranelli or anybody else who stands up them.what’s the matter guys you can dish it out but can’t take it?

  23. I said “first coach to have a winless season” but I obviously meant first coach to have an 0-16 season. Sorry for misspeaking.

  24. Good for Marinelli ! As a lifelong Detroit fan ( I know, I am SICK ) and having lived in metro Detroit area for over 20 years, believe me when I say that the Detroit media is BRUTAL ! Especially guys like Drew Sharp.
Rod Parker’s smart-assed question was typical. If you are a head coach, quarterback, bullpen closer, or hockey goalie in this town you may as well have Dr. Jack Kevorkian on speed dial.

  25. I completely agree with Florio. Marinelli was in WAY over his head as a head coach. He proved to be stubborn and totally inflexible in his approach, like trying to force-fit players into the Tampa 2 instead of tailoring his scheme to the players he had. And don’t forget, Marinelli picked out a lot of the “groceries”. He was just a lousy cook!
This reminds me of the recent flap with NBC and Matt Millen. If you’re not from the Detroit area, it wasn’t that big a deal. But for Lions fans, it was an absolute slap in the face.

  26. But still not better than his quote from a few weeks ago:
“My shovel is sharp. My pick is sharp and my will is outstanding.”
    War Rod Marinelli

The media in Detroit NEVER had Rods back, They were looking for it so they could put a knife in it!
You know GD well the only reason the Detroit beat writers wanted to talk to him was so they could try and rub his nose in it for going 0-16 and geting fired.

  28. One, Marinelli had zero ability as a head coach and was clearly in over his head. He mismanaged nearly every game he coached and constantly had a buffoonish look on his face during games.
Two, that roster was largely full of guys that he helped choose, as displayed by the absurd number of rejects from Tampa. The team also went 7-9 the year before. The roster has talent enough to at least be decent and was just horribly coached. Marinelli, Barry, and Coletto are all terrible coaches and it showed.
Marinelli has only himself to blame and is just as culpable as Millen. He hired the awful staff, he helped make the roster, he falt out sucked at his job. As a fan of the Lions for over twenty years he has been by far the worst coach I have ever seen and the only one that made me hate him. The guy deserves zero sympathy and is a complete hack.

  29. I love people making excuses for Rod… “He didn’t have any talent on the roster”; “The Lions front office sucks”; etc.
How about this: Millen was the GM when he took the job, the front office was mostly the same throughout his tenure. In other words the man knew what he was getting into. So its no excuse, there’s no way this doesn’t fall back on Marinelli. Besides he took a team that started 6-2 last year and let them finish 1-7. That tells me everything I need to know.
The guy isn’t as classy as some folks would think. I’m not so sure a classy guy would have stooped to the same level as the reporter that insulted him so bad just a few short weeks ago.

  30. Give Rod a break. He just moved to Chicago and isn1t yet used to the clear water that comes from the tap.

  31. i think it was just pent-up frustration. the detroit media has just beaten the hell out of Rod the entire time. the worst thing he does is call them “ladies”? i think Rod could have done better (or at least be more creative), but i’m not going to lambast him for being human. I know if i was the detroit coach i would have laid into some of those crappy reporters they have there in detroit.

  32. My favorite part of this story is how all the “pro-Marinelli, anti-geek reporter” comments are all rated a 5. All the comments defending some dipshit reporter and agreeing with pencil-neck Florio are rated like a 1.
At least it’s good to see that, contrary to what ESPN and other media hacks want, the public at large is still behind real football people and aware of the fact that sports “journalists” are just parasitic, sensationalist leeches.
Oh, and Favre2012, you’re a douchebag for making JIM ROME references on this site. Go away.

  33. I can only imagine how frustrated Marinelli is. Deserved or not, I don’t blame him. I just hope they caught it on film so it can be used in Coors Light commercials.

  34. Coors light commercials are, unexplicably, faked. Even Jim Mora is a reprise of his famous “playoffs?” speech. Do they do this to fool the 85% of idiot fans out there, and be able to use the Coors Light background at the same time? I thank the lord for TIVO everytime I get to blow past one of those migraines.

  35. JSpicoli, I think you meant to say “undoubtedly” fake, not “unexplicably”. Besides, the word is “inexplicably”. Who’s the idiot now, you moron?
And those commercials use actual clips. The Jim Mora “playoffs” clips are the real ones from the original press conference.
Go away, you idiot. You’re polluting the site.

  36. You were 0-16, Moron, then you blame the media. Who’s the real lady here?
And as for you jerks dissing on the reporters, what the ef do you know about it?

  37. I thought Rod would have left with an “Alpha Mike Foxtrot, Ladies”, being the old grunt that he is.

  38. I really could care less about something like this.
I’m sure every coach has strong opinions about their local media.
And one spoke up (sort of… barely… actually HARDLY) and HOW that is important…???
Good for any of these guys for giving up playing the diplomat.
Lame news makes for a lame article.
