Report: Vikings Pulled Out Of Cutler Talks Last Month

As the effort continues to identify teams that might be interested in trading for Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, one of the franchises presumably on the short list reportedly opted to bow out last month.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports, the Vikings were involved in three-team talks that would have brought Cutler to Minnesota.
But the Vikings bowed out because, as Robinson writes, “some elements in the Minnesota coaching staff weren’t entirely sold on Cutler.”
It’s not surprising.  Vikings coach Brad Childress had a front-row seat in Philly for the delicate genius known as Donovan McNabb.  And then, upon arriving in Minnesota, Childress and incumbent quarterback Daunte Culpepper got into a nasty pissing match before Culpepper was traded.
So Childress surely wouldn’t want Cutler.
And if the Vikings felt that way last month, they undoubtedly feel even more strongly about it now, given the extent to which Cutler has exposed the flesh of his rump to the rest of the league.

  1. This just shows how much more of a retard Childress is than I already thought he was. This guy should have been fired at least by the end of year 2. Come on Zygmunt, get it done already!

  2. Glad it turned out this way. Tarvaris Jackson is the man and I guarantee he will have a better season than Jay Cutler where ever that cry baby plays.

  3. Why would we want Cutler? We have T-Jack AND Sage. I am sure the rest of the division is shaking in their pads. Not to mention, Chilly said today that T-Jack will “get the first snap” in training camp.
He’s gotta swallow his pride and move on. T-Joke sucks, I’d rather have Marcus Vick as QB then TJ (Yes, Marcus, not his dog murdering brother).

  4. Does anyone need anymore proof that the vikes are in the hands of morons???
Cutler may well be somewhat of a trouble child (something the vikes are used to) but he at least is a starting-quality quarterback, which is pretty rare on the vikes’ roster.
Until the vikes commmit to a real QB, instead of career backups like Rosenfelds or talentless hacks like Jackson, they’ll be like the Lions of the 80’s and 90’s…great RB, very good defense, totally unable to be a consistent winner….
    Good call Chilly………..

  5. If we didn’t have Adrian Peterson I would probably turn my back on the Vikes. but we do 🙂

  6. Regardless of what happens, I know that I will stay tuned to Cutlertalk.com to get the latest scoop.

  7. Did I not hear somewhere that the Vikings had to issue a cash call to investors to take on Jared Allen’s contract? Perhaps they don’t have enough cash on hand to give Cutler a revised contract at the moment.
That said, anyone who thinks T-Jack is an NFL Quarterback has rectal-cranial syndrome.
Here’s the bottom line on Cutler. Compensation for him will be somewhere between the Matt Schaub deal (a 1st and two 2nd round picks in successive years) and a Jeff George deal (two 1sts in successive years). Whoever is willing to part with that gets him.
    My bet: Tampa.

  8. part of the coaches job is to be able to deal with some difficult personalities. If Chilly can’t handle Pep, or Cutler when are we ever going to find someone he can deal with. You just can’t pass on this type of talent at that position if your going into the last year of your contract. Call Shanahan now and have him pick up Cutler on his way to MN.

  9. Yup Tarvaris has 8 TD’s and 2 INT’s with a QB rating over 100 after getting his job back and he’s a talentless hack. Here come the brilliant posts.

  10. The Tice era looks Belicekian compared to the Childress regime. It is really depressing knowing that in the age of the Arizona Freaking Cardinals going to the Super Bowl that your team is at best a one round and out playoff loser.

  11. Let us see Tavaris put up those numbers for an entire season. Cutler would have been an instant upgrade. Childress is an idiot.

  12. I wouldn’t be so quick to blame them for shying away.
They have had Bus Cook clients during Childress’ tenure most notable Fred Smoot and Dante Culpepper. Neither one of those two were even close to being an asset to the team.
Bus Cook has a great knack for getting record contracts and killing teams.

  13. uh can we at least give tjack a full season before we close the book on him completely he has only thrown a little more than 500 passes and started 19 games that piece of crap aikman went 1-15 you have to give it a little time.I’m not saying he will begreatbuthe is better than anyone on the roster or free agent.

  14. People need to totally calm down about Cutler. He’s above average at best. He is no saviour.
He wants money. I’m a Viking fan and jumping on Cutler’s bandwagon is embarassing. Childress clearly needs to be shown the door, but before dumping Jackson at least give him a coach better than someone’s dad on an 8th grade pop warner team.
Childress is really that bad; Jackson has actually been regressing, if that is possible.

  15. please help me,, so the vikings passed on cutler, so why didn’t denver trade cutler to tampa bay to get matt cassell, denver only wanted to do a deal with the vikings held me understand this one please,

  16. Seeing we don’t know what draft picks were being asked for Cutler, how can anyone (except a Saint) make a rational judgment on whether the Viking coaches were foolish or not?
What was Denver’s price? 1, 2 or 3 first rounds? what?
By the way, this story does not jibe with Belicheck’s version of events so big pinch of salt.

  17. Childress hates QB’s that have balls.
That’s why they have traded for Kelly Holcomb, Brooks Bollinger, traded up for Tarvaris Jackson, signed and dumped Gus Frerrotte, and cut Brad Johnson, and traded for Sage Rosenfels.
Nobody associates the Vikings with good QB play.

  18. Man, I don’t even play professional football, but if someone walked up to me on the street and said “I’d rather have Tavaris Jackson as my starting quarterback than you”….well, despite being confused by how random and esoteric that statement would be coming from a total stranger….I would still be kind of offended.

  19. @ Florio
I told you many days ago to scratch the Vikings name of your stupid lists of potential teams.

  20. People seriously think Cutler will get the Vikings straight to the Super Bowl or something. Please send some proof. His team needed to win one game down the stretch last season and he choked like nobody’s business the last 3 games. 2 TD’s and 4 Picks. They had to win ONE game to be in and he/they couldn’t do it. Jackson played crappy in the Eagles game and everyone wants to remember that but not admit to Cutler’s choke job failure and zero playoff appearances.
Jackson played really good after getting his starting job back and the Vikings are fine at that position. Start looking at the receivers that can’t get open or the right tackle that can’t block anyone.
Jackson admitted himself in the beginning of the season he was playing to “not lose” and he no longer did that once he got to be the starter again and knew he could lose it again at any moment. Sage coming in is great motivation for T-Jack to play his butt off and get things done. And on the off chance Sage beats out Jackson, he’ll have earned it.
Give it a chance. And again realize there is problems besides QB getting in the way.

  21. Troy Aikman’s first 3 years go’s as follows wins=14 losses=24 tds=31 ints=46 Tavaris Jackson has started 14 games he is 8-6 with 20tds and 18 ints the point I’m trying to make is #1 troy aikman was horse shit and number #2 you have got to give the qb a chance to develop unless you can get someone like a manning brady or mcnabb right now and it’s not gonna happen give him a full season and let’s see what happens by the way vilkings fans your wrs suck to sydney rice is a bust and berrian is nothing more than a track runner playing football. If you keep changing qbs no one will ever be good you have to actually play to get experience.

  22. Cutler is the consummate man-child. Physically gifted but a mental midget. This guy could well be in for a very difficult career, given his behaviors.
It appears that one single event will shape this guys football life and he is the architect.

  23. lmfao Tavarious Jackson isnt.0001% percent of the QB that Cutler is! Wow you are retarded ad so is Brad Childress, now i love Jay Cutler and i really hope he is a Bronco next season, but if youre Minnesota, with no real QB you definetly go after one.

  24. Florio: If the Vi-Queens pulled out of talks with the Broncos before the sh*t hit the fan, how could Brad Childress and/or the triangle of authority base a decision not to pull off a trade for Cutler based on the current hissy-fit?
The Vi-Queens probably didn’t want to do the deal because they already leveraged themselves draft pick-wise last year sending all those picks to KC for the world’s second most accomplished pass rushing/drunk driver.
There is no way they would give up another year worth of high draft picks, especially if Childress thinks he can coach up any QB in the world to be an All-Pro. Especially if he hands off to Adrian Peterson 60% of the time.

  25. How does Chilly save his job?
The vikes jump up in the draft and snatch Stafford, Sanchez or Freeman. They grab an RT in round two, a couple of dbs later, and pick up a discarded vet wr in the summer.
Then, after winning the North, they lose in the championship game.

  26. IDIOTS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM…ladies and gentlemen your 2009 minnesota puprple retards!!!!

  27. i can’t believe there are till people on the tarlevious bandwagon.
drunkhaloplayer- are you serious? or are you drunk right now? come on dude.

  28. drunkhaloplayer says:
“People seriously think Cutler will get the Vikings straight to the Super Bowl or something. Please send some proof.”
How, exactly, could ANYONE prove that without Cutler actually playing for the Vikings? Not a fan of Cutler or the Vikes – just curious as to what you would consider “proof”, aside from him playing a full season in Minnesota.

  29. matt schuab was not traded for a first and two seconds. he was traded for two seconds and the texans traded their first round pick (the 8th overall) for the 12th overall from the falcons. bottom line………… falcons received 8th overall and 2 seconds for the 12th overall and matt schuab.

  30. People seriously think Cutler will get the Vikings straight to the Super Bowl or something. Please send some proof. Averaging less then 200yrds a game with the best running back in the league with a constant 9 men in the box isnt anything to brag about either.

Averaging less then 200yrds a game while having the best running back in the league and seeing a constant 8 or 9 men in the box isnt gonna cut it against the better defenses. Sure he put up good stats against second rate defenses while completing a spectacular 11 and 22 passes. Everyone knows you stack the box on the vikings because of the weak qb position

  32. “Cutler has exposed the flesh of his rump to the rest of the league.”
thats true especially for all of you ADD donk fans out there who were whinning about Rivers.
    whose laughing now, morons?

  33. Cutler off his back foot > T-Jack jump pass?
Cutler didn’t win down the stretch because his runnign game went into the crapper.
T-Joke put up 4 of those 8 TDs against a Cards team that had shut down at the end of the season.
I’ll take Cutler just for the sake of something different. Anything but watching T-Jack and Sage duke it out for most turnovers in a one game.

  34. The problem is that Childress wants a QB that will absorb all the Brilliance that pours out of his head. And Cutler is more of a put me on the field and I will make things happen kind of guy. He is interested less in scheme than he is in playing ball. Oh and the other problem would be that the Brilliance in his giant mellon Does not translate into anything near the Kick Ass Offense that he promised. So Screw Chillidog trade him for Cutler

  35. I think it’s pretty cool that Tarvaris Jackson has an account under the name of drunkhaloplayer at PFT.

  36. Tavaris Jackson is better than Jay Cutler…
And in other news the Pope was arrested last night after he was found nude in a brothel smoking crack whilst violating three female prostitutes and a circus midget.
Whatever drunkhaloplayer is drinkining I want some. Anyway, Childress is on his way out, but the GM is the one who made this call anyway. Cutler on the Vikes would make them an instant deep playoff contender and probably one of the most potent offenses in the NFL (assuming they get a WR for Cutler, because Berrian is a legit 2, but no more). All Day + 4500 passing yards in the same offense = scoring bonanza. Thats all.

  37. So the Vikings will take a chance on Jared Allen not getting another DUI but they won’t take a chance on Cutler? Great mgmt they have…

  38. You people talking about Cutler being “above average at best” or choking down the stretch fail to realize that Denver was down to their 7th running back. They were relegated to bringing in Tatum Bell to start for them for christ sakes. ZERO running game. Denver threw 45 times a game and all the defense had to prepare for was the pass. Do some of you not comprehend some of these extinuating factors contributing to his 2td 4int stretch. How you conveniently forget that Denver had the worst defense in the league. could those be factors why they lose??? OH NOOOOOO it couldn’t be. I’m sure Peyton Manning or Brady wouldve won every game and taken them straight to the promise land….Retards

  39. What a group of coaches Vikings have..!! Can you imagine having Cutler with elite defence for Vikings? Go Jackson Go (instead of moving forward on the field, moving backwards!!). Fire Childress Now along with entire coaching staff minus Lesli!!

  40. Jay Cutler, although talented has proven to be a bit childlike, in that he is expecting to be treated differently than anyone else. The NFL is a buisness, and in buisness changes are made to companies. Through Mr. Cutler’s behavior he is proving that he is probably a destractive force, in the locker room.
If the Broncos feel their team would be better with someone else at QB then that’s the direction they should go.
Additionally, the Broncos have yet to make a serious run in the playoffs, with Cutler at the QB position.
That being said I would not want the Vikings to give up all that the Broncos want for Cutler.

  41. From previous post dated March 20th titled ““MORE THAN TEN” TEAMS HAVE CALLED ABOUT CUTLER”
    Mr Twin City says:
Take my word the Vikes are NOT interested in Cutler
    LighTsouT says:
the Vikings aren’t interested? I’m sure to Vikings front office has a completely different view than you do
Maybe you didn’t understand my previous post THE VIKINGS ARE NOT INTERESTED IN CUTLER. If you think they are you have no idea as to the innerworkings of the Vikings. Chilly controls the roster and he would not tolerate a head strong, temperamental, QB.
    LighTsout……. APOLOGY ACCEPTED

  42. I’m a Vikings fans and was begging for them to move up and draft Jay Cutler coming out of college. Then when I saw he was asking for a trade I was hoping the Viking would be the ones to pull the trade.
Now I don’t want him and I think the Vikings did their due diligence in looking at the trade and not letting the pressure of getting a high profile QB cloud their judgement. They were in trade discussions with the Broncos and Texans at the same time. They went with Sage over Jay.
This appears to be a bad decision to go with a 30-year old career back up over a 25-year old Pro Bowler. But it was the right one.
With Cutler they would commit multiple high picks a year after the Jared Allen trade, then have to sign him long term. But I think the whispers around the league that scared off the Vikings (and McDaniels) are now coming to light — that he’s a talented QB, but has Ryan Leaf level immaturity, may not have the mental toughness to fight out of adversity, may not be able to rally his teammates around him, and may be prone to making bad decision on and off the field.
So whoever makes the trade is gambling their team’s future that Cutler will develop the maturity, mental toughness and intelligence for the trade to pay off.
With Sage, the Vikings still don’t have their QB of the future, but do have an experienced QB in his prime who can make all the throws down field, and who is mentally tough to emerge as a leader. His problem is he has taken too many risks with the ball in an attempt to carry bad to mediocre teams and prove himself, that he has actually hurt his performace. But he may be an ideal fit for the Vikings. Given the their defense and running game, the pressure will be off him to force plays and just make the plays that are there.
Plus the cost was only a second day pick — allowing the Vikings to build for the future at other position by saving their high draft choices — and a fairly low cost of salary (his pay is low for a starter).

  43. There are so many goofy things about this story that they’re hard to count: (1) is this quote even accurate in the first place? (2) dosn’t everyone realize, as admitted by the Pats, that the Cassel deal was already done before this Denver 3-way crap began; (3) did anyone consider the Vikes were posturing to get a better deal — like saying they didn’t like the color of a car to get a better price? (4) the Vikes were in the mix for Cutler — it shows they are trying and had some interest — meaning they are not satisfied with their current QB situation; and (5) Klink is just posturing on the T-Jack starting stuff.

  44. Seriously how does someone even begin to think that TJack is better than Cutler? TJack can’t make all the throws. Cutler can, and does, frequently. There aren’t a lot of QBs that demonstrate that fearlessness again and again and again. Cutler is one of those guys. The kind you build a franchise around. That’s the difference.
By some of the logic I’m reading here, VY would be better than Cutler in much the same way TJack is supposed to be better than Cutler. He won rookie of the year. His team had a winning record. Oh, and he can’t throw. Yeah.
McD seems to be playing the douche really well. If this article is accurate he didn’t just float trade offers to the Pats, he floated them to a bunch of other teams. Maybe Cutler is on to something here and McD is a two-faced arrogant preppy weasel. It’s obvious McD is of the philosophy of the system QB, and he just wants to find someone to mold and doesn’t think it’s Cutler. Hey fair enough. He’s gonna get his chance. Funny thing is, if it doesn’t work out Denver’s gonna have wasted at least 5 years and they won’t have that franchise player they do now. Something here is really fishy.

  45. Above all else, the one comforting fact in the Viking’s off season moves is the fact that the GM and Head Coach when given a choice, will always choose incorrectly. Dumb and dumber or in reality, dumb and dumbest.
Rosenfelds has been in the league for what? 7 years and never was a starter. Did it ever dawn on the Vikings there is a reason for that? Cutler isn’t perfect but he does have a world of talent and the best part is, he is only going to get better now that he is along his learning curve a few seasons.
The Vikings had one of the better defenses in the NFL. They have the best RB in the NFL. Usually that is a lethal combination and a solid basis for a Superbowl run. But, and its a huge one, they don’t have a QB. That can sometimes be overcome if you have a head coach who is smart (see Bellicheat with Matt Cassell last year). But if you asked to describe Childress in 100 words or less, none of those words would include the word, Smart. Idiot, dolt, tool, numnuts, shit for brains seem more likely.
Meanwhile, another year will come off of A. Peterson’s career without anything to show for it. Reminds me of Barry Sanders, sad but true.

  46. drunkhaloplayer says: “Glad it turned out this way. Tarvaris Jackson is the man and I guarantee he will have a better season than Jay Cutler where ever that cry baby plays. ”
I’m going to have to assume that what we have here is one of those situations where sarcasm does not translate well to the written word. It’s the only possible explanation for such a statement.

  47. NoHomeTeam says: I’m going to have to assume that what we have here is one of those situations where sarcasm does not translate well to the written word. It’s the only possible explanation for such a statement.
Go to Viking Update and you will find several blinded viking fans arguing that T Jack is on the same level as Cutler. True Story

  48. I’m going to have to assume that what we have here is one of those situations where sarcasm does not translate well to the written word. It’s the only possible explanation for such a statement
You over estimate the intelligence of Viking fans. You see, they actually think T Jack Off is a real QB, ignoring his past performances. If you ask a Viking fan, signing Jared Allen for over $70 mil was the only thing they needed to get to the Superbowl.
They are as dumb as their head coach which is to say, pretty stupid.

  49. PJW says:
They have had Bus Cook clients during Childress’ tenure most notable Fred Smoot and Dante Culpepper.
Culpepper’s agent was not Bus Cook. It was Mason Ashe.
