Flirtation Between Snyder, Shanahan Already Has Begun?

We realize that, because it’s April 1, many of you will be suspecting that every story we post today will be part of our annual April Fool’s Day routine.  In fact, most of you are so keenly aware of our ritual of making up a story on April 1 (as opposed to the ones we make up the other 364 days of the year) that you’re bracing for the inevitable “Ben Roethlisberger To Retire” headline.
(Meanwhile, roughly five percent of the audience now believes that we’re reporting Ben Roethlisberger is retiring.)
We’re not saying whether or not we’ll slip in a little April Fool’s blurb between now and midnight, but we realize as the traffic mushrooms that perpetuating phony stories will jeopardize whatever shreds of credibility we’ve managed to compile over the years.
We say all that because, while the following story might be perceived to be an April 1 gag, it’s not.
During an impromptu PFT spot on WJFK in D.C. this morning, one of the Junkies mentioned that there was a rumor of a January meeting between Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.  We’d heard the same thing, but to my recollection we’d never posted it.
With Broncos quarterback and Shanahan protege Jay Cutler now linked to the ‘Skins, it makes sense to point out that, indeed, there was/is a rumor that Snyder and Shanahan met.
We fully expect the team to deny it — just like they did last year when rumors flew that the Redskins had spoken with Bill Cowher after Joe Gibbs retired.  (Cowher, by the way, would later confirm the discussions.)
And we figure that, at some point, the Redskins will have to address the new report linking them more strongly than ever to Cutler.
It’ll need to be far more convincing that Vinny Cerrato’s statement from last month.

  1. Yep, I also heard Tom Landry was frozen and Snyder’s gonna thaw him out for next season.

  2. This is great news! Shanny would be failed head coach #7 for the Redsnyders. The Cowboys have only had 7 head coaches in their entire existence!

  3. Not gonna happen. Way too much backlash. Way too much. Doesnt seem like a big deal now but there has got to be someone in that organization who isnt a “Yes-Man.” It seems like everyone in that organization is saying yes to Dan Snyder all the time. But Snyder isnt an idiot so he has to have someone in his inner circle that isnt always telling him what he wants to hear.
Bringing in both of these guys would seem to set a bad precedent in the locker room. They have a pretty good QB(with weapons, sort of.) They have a likeable coach with the players. This move would strictly be for the fans, ticket sales, merch sales, etc. Nothing more.
Just doesnt seem to make much sense. But since when has anything Dan Snyder done make sense?

  4. Yawn… the Junkies are now being cited as sources? The same people who broadcast the rumors from a caller who said Bill Cowher bought land in Loudoun County so he could be close to Redskin Park? Mike, don’t post just to post. If you didn’t post it then, don’t post it now. This isn’t reliable at all unless you heard it from a legit source. If you had, we would have heard about this months ago.

  5. Snyder just doesn’t seem like a guy that can have a strong personality coach. Schottenheimer was probably the best option Snyder had in recent years and they just didn’t mesh. I don’t see Shannahan working there either. Snyder needs a lapdog.

  6. Syder’s GM formula: Future Redskin = Q Score*(hours for dinner meeting/number of “meetings”)-(number of years left on their contract-number of years they will resign them prior to training camp)

  7. “This is great news! Shanny would be failed head coach #7 for the Redsnyders. The Cowboys have only had 7 head coaches in their entire existence!”
At least LiL Danny’s Skins can claim to have won a playoff game in the last 10+ years. Can the CrackBoys do that?

  8. Best April Fools joke I heard so far is from Gator Country (FM 99.9) in Jacksonville, FL.
They had a 15 minute spot, complete with well-edited soundbites, on how UF was under investigation regarding possible violations regarding the recruitment of Tim Tebow – something about illegal housing – and that if found guilty, the University would have to forfeit BOTH national championships.
They’re playing some of the call-ins they’re getting – hillarious.

  9. “At least LiL Danny’s Skins can claim to have won a playoff game in the last 10+ years.”
Not “at least”. “At most”. I hope that acts as a salve to soothe your chapped ass and that 76-84 record since Snyder bought the team (including 6-14 against the Cowboys).

  10. @ Vox
Sorry to burst your bubble, but any team that hires Wade Phillips and retains him has absolutely no room to speaking on coaching moves.

  11. So you think after watching one malcontent player force his way out of Denver due to a new coach, you think Washington would do the same to their organization??
I’m sure Clinton Portis wants to play for Shanahan…but I’m sure he’d get a bit more creative with his whining…

  12. IMO, Cutler is acting like a spoiled brat. What hasn’t been talked about much, if at all, is that his behavior is apparently resulting in what he wants, which is a trade.
So in essence, he is getting what he wants be acting the way he is. Does anyone honestly believe that he will change his behavior as long as he gets what he wants acting the way he is?
Now, suppose he ends up going to the Redskins, and he some how does end up working again with his old coach Shanahan. How in the world is Cutler going to mature in that type of situation if he didn’t mature under Shanahan back in Denver?
If Cutler couldn’t get to the playoffs in the AFC West going against crappy defenses in small media cities, then IMO, there is no way that he will make the playoffs in the NFC East where they have better defenses and large media centers with large strong passionate fan bases. I don’t think he has the temperment to deal with it.
Cutler does remind me of Jeff George and Ryan Leaf. He has the arm of Jeff George, but IMO, his attitude is more towards Leaf’s, not that I believe that George’s attitude was all that great.
Cutler had it easy in Denver because it is a small media town. Sure, he was in Elway’s shadow, but it wasn’t as though he was the one that immediately took over after Elway retired.

  13. Come on, Shanahan to the Redskins? That’s the best you can come up with? You’re losing your touch, Matt Millen to the Raiders for two draft picks was much more convincing a few years ago.

  14. Vok -“I hope that acts as a salve to soothe your chapped ass and that 76-84 record since Snyder bought the team (including 6-14 against the Cowboys.”
LOL I have to admit, that was good..Wethog got owned on that one..sorry dude

I’ll take RECENT playoff success over bragging about the number of head coaches in a franchises history. Win a playoff game Crackboys. Just one!

  16. …and just like any article involving Dallas and/or Washington, the idiot fanboys are squabbling uselessly again. Florio, turn the hose on them or something!

  17. “Sorry to burst your bubble, but any team that hires Wade Phillips and retains him has absolutely no room to speaking on coaching moves.”
Wade Phillips has a winning record as a head coach in the NFL. He’s 70-49, in fact. That’s a better record than every coach Snyder has had except Shottenheimer and Gibbs (and Gibbs proved that the game passed him by long ago with his 30-34 record in his second stint with the team. Of course, Snyder immasculated Shottenheimer right off the bat and dumped him after one season in favor of “the ol’ ball coach”).

  18. “…and just like any article involving Dallas and/or Washington, the idiot fanboys are squabbling uselessly again. Florio, turn the hose on them or something!”
If this isn’t the place for “idiot fanboys” like Vox and me to talk smack then where should we go? Its all in good fun. Lighten up. And if you don’t I have a hose I can turn on you.

  19. “I’ll take RECENT playoff success”
Bitch, the Deadskins haven’t even been in the playoffs recently! You’re on a -0- season winning streak! Have a winning season, Deadskins, just one! Then work on two in a row, something that Dan Snyder has NEVER known.

  20. JadeHellbringer = a Broncos fan. I think I can speak for WetHog when I say… YOU HAVE OUR CONDOLENCES.

  21. boleyn9
Don’t be hating on the Junks. They do have some very reliable sources at Redskins Park. The King of Ashburn has cocktails with just about everyone that works for the Redskins so if Lurch says the meeting happened….it probably did.

  22. I’ll take RECENT playoff success over bragging about the number of head coaches in a franchises history.
Danny Boy fires all his coaches which is great i love watching himself run his team into the ground. Lets be honest the quitskins suck and who cares if you have won a playoff game or two and we havnt if you cant win it all who care? Do you think the Eagles are bragging about there playoff wins?? NO!! they havnt won the big one so being the Buffalo Bills of the conference finals means nothing if you cant win it all.

  23. I love how Vox can crack on Snyder when his teams owner is Jerry Jones! Sure Snyder is meddlesome and is acting more as a fan than a responsible owner but can you claim otherwise with Jerry Jones as your owner? Does he make good decisions? What I can say about both owners is that they are obsessed with winning. If only they could hire good football people and then keep away but Jones proved he cannot do that as with Bill Parcells. Snyder did the same with schottenheimer. Another season or two and Schott would have us in the playoffs every year. Unfortunately, Jack Kent Cooke made is so the skins did not stay in the family.

  24. See the difference though is Jerry Jones has 3 Superbowl rings what does danny boy have other then a losing record??? And also Parcels quit jerry didnt fire him like danny boy fired Shotty!!!!

  25. The best part is, the Redskins have a better overall record than the Cowboys since Snyder bought the team. Hilarious!
