Jason Campbell Declares, "I'm A Starter"

Amid published reports that the Washington Redskins are trying to swing a deal for Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, current Redskins starter Jason Campbell made clear Wednesday night that he has no intention to serve as Cutler’s — or anyone’s — backup.
I’m a starter,” Campbell told Brett Haber of WUSA-TV, while attending a Washington Capitals hockey game.
Campbell called the Cutler situation “just a rumor,” and he explained that the team told him when Cutler-to-D.C. rumors first surfaced last month that Campbell was still “their guy.”
But Campbell hasn’t heard that again since the rumors/reports intensified on Tuesday, when the Broncos officially placed Cutler on the trading block.
The team didn’t only give Campbell assurances of his ongoing role a couple of weeks ago.  They also made their position clear to the public.
Redskins executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato told David Elfin of the Washington Times on March 17 that Campbell “is going to be our quarterback.”
Apparently, Cerrato forgot to add an important qualifier.
“Until early April.”

  1. all we need is o linemen, young strong o linemen, so I feel relatively confident we will do our best to get EVERYTHING but o linemen………

  2. No way does this happen. JC will be the starter on opening day and The ‘Skins will not trade for Cutler.
Most teams bar a very select few are probably analyzing this situation, it’s hardly un-heard of, especially when you have a Franchise player like Cutler on the block.

  3. I’m tired of the Cutler talk.. I wish life would just go back to the way it was before the whole cutler thing came up. Just draft someone OL, lb whatever in the draft, forget the whole cutler thing and prepare for the season.

  4. The Broncos will get Campbell, he Redskins first rounder this year and their first rounder next year. I’ll take it. The Redskins have always been known to give up too much for players. The Broncos utilized the first round draft pick they received from the Portis/Bailey trade to get Cutler in the first place.

  5. The Redskins have to be the worst franchise in the NFL ( aside from maybe the Broncos ). Whatever you think about the upgrade from Campbell to Cutler, if you’re the Redskins you have to publicly deny everything and keep any contact completely confidential. It seems like whenever the Skins make any move everyone knows about it weeks in advance. Now they pretty much have to make this move because they just created their own little disgruntled QB drama. Idiots.

  6. campbell you’re a starter, all right……the question is, “Where???” cause it sounds like your days in DC are numbered…..
Hey Dan “Jerry Jones Jr.” Snyder, what gives? Why can’t you see, it’s continuity that builds a winning program, you can’t leave your hands off and let things develop for a few years. That’s why we go 7-9, 8-8, 5-11 all the time, and 9-7 is a breakout year. LEAVE things ALONE and draft some o linemen ya dope

  7. Jason Campbell is what the NFL should be about. Hard work and commitment under the hardest of circumstances, and never wavering. It’s a shame Dan Snyder can’t commit to anything over one year.

  8. Campbell will be a starter, in Denver. The pattern is so familiar. Danny gets the vapors and no price is too high. Washington fans can say goodbye to Campbell and a bunch of draft picks. They might have to throw in LaRon Landry if the bidding gets crazy.

  9. Campbell, I love you and I’ll wear your jersey whenever I play football with friends, but you’d only start for about 5 other teams in this league.
    Sorry man….

  10. Campbell, its the Redskin they need to have a new QB every 2 seasons or so. Cutler’s gonna get his crybaby a$$ plastered in the NFC East!

  11. Does anyone else think that Shanarat was behind this mess from the get go, planning the whole thing, including him being the HC of the Skins?
I think I’d be more shocked to find out he DIDN’T do it.

  12. J. Campbell declares,
“Gosh darn it, people like me.”

    Sorry man….
TB, MIN, MIA, NYJ, BUF, CHI, DET, OAK, KC, NYG, TEN, JAX, BAL, CLE, SF, CAR, STL
I’m no mathmagician, but that’s a lot more than 5

  14. It’s tough for Dan Snyder though… Imagine, just as he thought he had ‘won’ free agency with the ridiculous contracts to Haynesworth and Hall, a new contender emerges… Without acquiring Cutler in FA, how can he positively know that he once again ‘won’ free agency?
He has to make that call, no matter the price!

  15. Jason has shown signs that he could be a above average Quaterback in spite of the musical chairs game Danny boy plays with coachs, players, and game plans. As a Giant fan it does my heart good to see Dan RUN the Redskins. He has ruined more good players and entire seasons because he just can’t just leave it alone. Bring the Baby to Washington you get what you deserve. By the way Dan even if the trade doesn’t happen it will probably take 8 or 9 games for Jason to get over this 8-8 or 7-9 that sounds about right! Dan Snyder the only man in football who could make Jerry Jones look like a genius!

  16. “Hey Dan “Jerry Jones Jr.” Snyder”
Who the hell are you to give Snyder an upgrade like that?

  17. He is a starter. But he’s a game manager, not a game changer.
Campbell would be good on a team like the Titans. They have a good line and a great defense and a great run game. The skins have a good run game and a good D, but Campbell can’t make up for the line’s faults.

  18. Jason,
You should hope you get away from Washington. Your career will improve immensely.
    Signed,
    Brad Johnson
    Rich Gannon
Jason is correct that right now he is a starter. Somewhere in the lower half of the league in terms of starting ability, but still a starter. But if he doesn’t improve in a hurry he won’t be starting much longer.

  19. As a Lions fan, I pray to god that Cutler goes to D.C, because the Lions are in no way in position to trade away a bunch of there draft picks for just 1 player. Yeah Cutler is a hell of a player, but at the moment the Lions have way to many needs on there team to even consider getting themselves a pro-bowl caliber QB. You have to have an offensive line for the QB to work.

  20. Jason,
You should hope you get away from Washington. Your career will improve immensely.
    Signed,
    Brad Johnson
    Rich Gannon
    Also add Trent Green.

  21. he shouldnt even be starting for the skins now. collins got them into the playoffs after that stellar campbell-led 5-7 start in 07.

  22. Trent Green, I knew there was another one. Good call.
Would be nice for us to get a QB who is good that we don’t run out of town.

  24. The owner, GM and head coach spent 10 hours in an office yesterday trying to figure out exactly how gullible Jason Campbell is.

the ghost of sean taylor might argue that point, not to mention several teams collapsing down the stretch that made it possible for them to slip into the playoffs.

  26. Campbell isnt bad its the damn O line that sucks and never protects his ass i think it would be a bad move to bring Cutler in WTF does he have to offer? NOTHING that i see or like why cant they just leave shit alone you cant expect the man to be the best damn quarterback when you change shit every year!!!

  27. Taking Vinny Cerrato at his word is like taking John Herrara at his word. Neither is worth a damn. They are both yes men for pitiful owners.
Campbell a starter for Denver, not likely. If Cutler apparently wasn’t “smart enough” to work in McDaniels/New England offense I don’t see how Campbell will be either.

  28. I would start Campbell over Cutler. Maybe its just me, but I don’t fancy quarterbacks with soiled diapers.

who are you quoting that he’s not “smart enough”? Campbell is actually quite the quarterback that McDaniels could use. He’s smart, hardworking, a leader, and he’s got a big arm. It’s hard to prove that with no WR’s, no o-line, and a carousel of headcoaches every 2 years. The best thing for Jason would be to get out of dodge to a place that is more stable. I don’t know if Denver’s coaching staff will be any different, but he’ll definitely have an upgrade in talent around him. If the defense doesn’t get improved in Denver, then it won’t matter who is the quarterback.

  30. Jason Campbell had different coaches every year. How is he supposed to win games with that kind of inconsistency?
Cutler would bring lots of media attention to every Redskins game, though, and that is probably what Snyder is drooling over more than any notion it’s an ‘upgrade’ at quarterback.

  31. bshazzar, do you even watch football??? Your post was ridiculous..
No way in hell he could step in right now and start for Mia, Buf, NYG, or Bal. All have way better Qb’s with higher ceilings than Campbell

bshazzar, the “not smart enough” comment came from one of the Denver sportswriters in reference to Cutler being able to adapt to McDaniels offensive system after McDaniels acknowledged he did try to get Cassell. Cutler’s Wonderlic score, if that’s an accurate measure of intelligence, was 3 points higher than Campbell’s, 26 to 23.
As for Campbell getting out of Washington to a place more stable, I agree it would be good for his career. I’m not sure Denver is a place that’s going to be more stable in the short term unless McDaniels wins quickly. He’s off to a poor start in many ways including the media, fan base and splitting the locker room.

  33. Campbell is a mediocre quarterback. He is the only thing holding back the offense. He occasionally shows flashes at the end of games, but when you keep going into the fourth quarter only having scored 10 or 13 points, it’s hard to win football games.
If the Redskins have any sense, they will dump Campbell and get a major upgrade in Cutler, no matter what the cost is. Campbell has a cannon for an arm, but he has zero touch on his short and intermediate passes. The only real positive out of his game is that he doesn’t turn the ball over too often.
As to which teams Campbell would be a starter for, I’d go with MIN, NYJ, DET, OAK, SF, STL

“bshazzar, do you even watch football??? Your post was ridiculous..”
Ridiculous? Considering you cut my list down by a mere 25%, it couldn’t have been THAT ridiculous. The list is still twice as long as the post I was responding to. Hyperbole, you are the king of, as evidenced by the following statement:
“No way in hell he could step in right now and start for Mia, Buf, NYG, or Bal. All have way better Qb’s with higher ceilings than Campbell”
No way in Hell? Way better? WAY BETTER? Washington was 23rd in passing yards last year. MIA= 10 NYG=18th, BUF=22nd, BAL=28th. That’s not WAY better considering the talent on o-line of those teams vs. the o-line. If you put Campbell on those teams he would do just as well if not better than the other 4 QB’s, I don’t think you could say the same if roles were reversed. This really doesn’t matter anyway because the difference wouldn’t be substantial enough to support your point.
Pennington-career highs despite being in the league twice as long as Campbell. Smart coaching staff and front office who were familiar with his strengths and weaknesses.
Manning-#1 rush offense in league, and better talent at WR, until Burress went down. Finished middle of the pack in passing yards per game, substantially lower once Burress went down.
Flacco-#4 rushing offense in league, better o-line, HC with actual coaching experience, top notch OC. Played defensive juggernauts like Cleveland and Cincinnatti
Edwards-similar stats to Campbell, but way more interceptions and he had the same staff as last year

  35. screw CHUBBY CUTLER! He is a big, whining baby. Skins are better off with him.
Geez, i was really busy at work these past couple and days and I just got up to speed that the skins were indeed pursuing cutler. Thank god we didn’t get him.
JASON CAMPBELL IF ARE READING THIS…..YOU are our QB. You got skills and hopefully we will draft a better O-line for you here in 3 weeks.
I know you will just get better and better under Zorn and his w/c style offense. Please go out and prove that IDIOT Snyder that he needs to better support his CURRENT players by playing YOUR game with your AWESOME attitude and work ethic. SOOOOOO glad we didn’t that double chinned, chubby Cutler.
The acquisition of Big Al and Wynn and resigning Daniels will give you plenty more chances this year and I know you will come through JC.
    YOU ROCK JC!
