Matthews, Cushing Might Have Had Some Explaining To Do

One of our more astute readers pointed out to us tonight a controversy that first arose in 2007.  If we knew about it at the time, we’d forgotten about it completely.
Former USC linebackers Clay Matthews, who is regarded as potential first-round draft pick, created two years ago a Facebook group called “White Nation,” which among other things advocated the “arrest [of] black babies before they become criminals.”  Former USC linebacker Brian Cushing, another potential first-round prospect, joined the Facebook group.
It was all a joke, an unnamed administration source previously told the Daily Trojan (which coincidentally was the working title of Wilt Chamberlain’s autobiography).
Apparently, the joke arose from the fact that Matthews, Cushing, and other white teammates were dubbed “White Nation” by one or more non-white USC players.
It’s unknown whether and to what extent Matthews and/or Cushing have been grilled about the incident during pre-draft interviews.  But if the Niners deemed it appropriate to ask Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford about the divorce of his parents, it’s more than fair game for NFL teams to revisit the issue with Matthews and/or Cushing in order to confirm that it really was a joke — and then to attempt to discern the humor in it.

  1. I seriously believe that it really was a joke, because neither player would have survived on that team very long if it was reality, it was probably a jest as they say however, with that being said it was dumb, very dumb, about the dumbest thing outside of breaking the law that I’ve seen any player doing for a long time. I mean what were they thinking? These guys know, or atleast should know how much of a big magnifying glass they are under. Just shows how childish some of these guys still are, but all in all I’m sure it was a joke, just a very bad, very dumb joke.

  2. Let’s make a big deal about college kids making a a joke out of a term giving to them by black teammates. If a team passes one of them based on this; wtf.

  3. Why even bring light to this? It’s like your little brother telling on you for something you did years ago….it’s just annoying.

  4. Regardless of whether it was a joke or not, it was pretty reckless for linebackers at a powerhouse like USC to post such garbage. But if their teamates weren’t affended by it, then ok..but they should be smarter than that

  5. I wont be able to look at these guys the same again. Its one thing to have a group based on a nickname that was given to you by your teammates its another to say “kill black babies before they become criminals” whats the joke in that?? Did their black teammates tell them that joke too?? Lets not make excuses for their actions. Joke or no joke, that was to far in my opinion.

  6. Right on vbar119.
Mike florio is like the little annoying brother of Clay Matthews … ?????
    NOT

  7. Yet another non-story on a slow news day. You continue to prove the necessity of newspapers Florio.

  8. They probably won’t be good football players because of this. Or have any team chemistry at all. Probably both 7th rounders now. Non-issue. Your blog is dropping in quality all the time, Mike. Also, get better peons, you have so many big wigs showing up checking out this site so you say(Dolfins), break the bank and get someone with the quality of MDS on the go. You still must have some of the Archuleta money kicking around!

  9. You should bring the stories together.
“The Jets scheduling conflicts.” with “White Nation.”
See what you come up with.
Ratings Florio, ratings. Think of it…
Make your own news…. Like everybody else.

  10. …because the teams are preparing to invest tens of millions of dollars in these guys, based in large part on their decision making abilities.

  11. I can’t believe anyone is making a big deal out of this. As was already commented, they would be dead on a team full of black guys. Obviously black teamates gave them the name, and it’s obviously an inside joke that was probably extremely funny to the people involved. But now everyone is trying to be all politically correct and make a big deal out of anything racial…grow up people.

  12. I read about this a couple of months ago. Google for the story. I don’t think it is a big deal. Black players involved came to the rescue of Matthews and Cushing. Said it was something they started, M & C are not racist and looking back they probably shouldn’t have done it.

  13. If these KIDS did something that was initiated by something other KIDS on their same football team did, I don’t see the harm. Who in the world expects 18, 19, or 20-year olds to act like anything but a kid? C’mon! Kids do goofy things, goofy, harmless things. They bring enthusiasm. They’re not adults no matter the legal definition when it comes to driving or to drinking. A boy becomes a truly mature man in his late-twenties and anyone expecting something different isn’t realistic. Don’t steal the joy of being a kid from a kid.

  14. Im not surprised that all of the white people who visit this site and post on this board dont think that this is a big deal at all. Not surprising at all considering most whites thing racism is all a thing of a past in America now that there is a black president.
Meanwhile, these same yuppies think that Vick is the anti-christ because he killed some Labordoodles.
    Idiots.

  15. Young people have too much fun and don’t take enough things seriously.
Old people wring their hands and take things far too seriously.
They wouldn’t starting on the team if these overblown allegations were true.
You Jesse and Al types need to back off and have a sense of humor.

  16. Don’t look now, but all of the people making the anti-semitic jokes in that earlier Jets posting are all coming over here to say how this is a non-story.
Too many ignorant people in this country.

  17. It didn’t offend the guys on the team or we would have heard more about it. If black players said these things about white players nothing would be said. Hollywood can make the movie ” White men can’t jump ” but if they made the movie ” Black men can’t swim ” there would be an uproar. There are enough black players on the USC football team to police their own house

At least get the quote right. It says, “ARREST black babies before they become criminals.” Not kill. Big difference.

Most whites think racism is all a thing of the past? Come on. We don’t think that. We just don’t see racism as the major factor in every decision every person makes. I’ve seen plenty of racism, but it goes both ways. The majority of outright racism I’ve seen in my professional career has actually been against whites.
I have to attend a state of diversity meeting every year and listen to HR talk about how we don’t have enough minorities, how we’re going to do more recruiting at Grambling, and just basically try to make me feel bad about being a white male. I knew an Asian woman who HR told, “You’re not the right minority.” I’ve also seen a black coworker given multiple second chances and sent back to the same week-long training class he was sent to years ago. This guy used the company as his own health club and for free phone calls for 4-5 years before he got canned. Because he was black and it would reflect poorly on our department if he were let go. Meanwhile, if any of my white coworkers wasn’t pulling his weight he’d be let go in short order.
So please don’t preach to us about racism. It’s alive and well, but I bet you aren’t seeing some of it.

  19. One other thing.. Can we expect a Matthews/Cushing/Robert Powell picture from Taco Bill? Sounds like a winner.

  20. The son of a NFL player should know that even an inside joke can cost you an endorsement deal. I doubt it will affect when they are drafted, but I’m sure they just lost a commercial or two.

If this i a racial issue why aren’t people condemning the black team mates for coming up with calling the white athletes “white Nation” Blacks can be racist too. and from your comments in targeting just whites as racist makes you one also so I guess you are an idiot too

  22. This story was posted for two reasons:
    1) to generate posts from the many readers
    2) to give a good laugh to the majority of the readers
other than that no real point to it. if teams want to let them slip to the second or third round because of facebook the browns will be more than happy to draft them.

  23. It’s not racist. Also, it says arrest not kill. And it comes from a shock tshirt company TShirt Hell. Listen to the black players, the LB’s probably had buzz cuts and they joked about it. Can’t believe college kids would have that kinda sense of humor. It’s because they are not racist and racism is a funny old term to some people.

  24. White men can’t jump, Black men can’t swim. These guys can police their own locker room. We only get mad about stereotypes when they are used on us, when we use them on whites, Asian or Hispanic people we think they are funny. How many white guys failed the piss test for weed ? Yet no one is allowed to say ANYTHING about it or they get called racist

  25. No big deal. They were in college. Who can honestly say they never joined a social group promoting racist infanticide??? I mean seriously…

  26. Clint:
‘People have lost their sense of humour,’
‘In former times we constantly made jokes about different races.
‘You can only tell them today with one hand over your mouth otherwise you will be insulted as a racist.
‘I find that ridiculous. In those earlier days every friendly clique had a “Sam the Jew” or “Jose the Mexican” – but we didn’t think anything of it or have a racist
    thought.
‘It was normal that we made jokes based on our nationality or ethnicity. That was never a problem.
”I don’t want to be politically correct. We’re all spending too much time and energy trying to be politically correct about everything.’
I could not care less what people call me – it took a while to get to the point in life where I understood that only I can change me and that others opinions of me mean nothing. I do not tell bigoted jokes because I do not find them amusing but I do not care a whit if someone else does – it is their business where they are in their own personal growth. What is wrong with society is that we are so afraid of misstepping that we cannot speak our minds at all and this is, in large part, due to societal repression such as PC. The homogenization of our culture is near complete and this emasculation of opinion is at the heart of it. Welcome to the continued gelding of America and the world. Repression ALWAYS ends up coming out sideways. As a shrink, I see it first hand every day. Banter does not reinforce the stereotype, it keeps true hatred in its proper place: at bay. To be repressd will allow that hatred to fester and rot and boil over. The PC movement is, on a societal level, as fascist as any forced behavior.

  27. For those of you who were never in a locker room and for those of you who forgot what it’s like… Common chatter between teamates. The black guys get made fun of, the indians (I mean native americans) get made fun of, the white guys get made fun of. The best part of it is, no one in the locker room cares because they’re all brothers and brothers are allowed to ride one another.
Back then, no one understood what posting on a public profile could create.
Non-issue and your an idiot for bringing this up. Between the Jew story and this… first time I’ve felt like your a moron.

  28. @VinceDrooley
Can you dumb that down a bit for those of us with just bachelors degrees?
I had to copy and past ‘gelding’ into Word, make it singular and look for synonyms. Then had to spell synonyms in Word to make sure I spell it correctly.
To geld is to neuter… Learn something every day.

  29. Bush-league, pysche-out stuff…..laughable Florio….you pull this sh*t again and I gonna consider you a permanent member of the corporate-owned media which has a stranglehold on our society

  30. “All members are athletes of Caucasion (sic) descent.”
4 years at the U(niversity of) S(poiled) C(hildren) and Matthews can’t spell causasian?
    Arians Unite!

  31. Ok, lemme get this straight. Some white dudes get labeled by their black teammates, and make a joke of it on facebook. That’s racist? No. It’s goofing off. Although if you were to reverse the roles and some white kids labeled their black teammates there would be calls for the white kids heads.
It’s not racism if the role reversal test fails. It’s a double standard.
Racism is cops pulling blacks over because they’re black. Racism is having vastly disproportional incarceration rates. Racism is Augusta not having a black member until 20 years ago. That’s racism. You know, stuff that actually has an impact on peoples’ lives because of the color of their skin. The fight for equality get diminished every time some opportunist sees a failure of political correctness as free media time or a lawsuit.

  32. lmao at shukey.
I cant wait for beanie to finally get the opportunity to plow over a couple surfers, after he was sidelined last year when they played em.

  33. Did the usc administration condone such a video at the time? Was there any action taken against the those involved? Or did Petey do another famous “usc sweep it under the rug jobs”. An institution of higher ethics it ain’t.

  34. Here I thought it was something serious like they got caught using steroids….
Come on now…this happened in 2007 and it was a joke gone bad by people outside the team.

  35. My, what a funny, funny joke. I think Matthews and Cushing should bypass the NFL and register for the Very Hilarious Comedy Draft, where they are certain to go #1 and #2, respectively. Signing on with super agent Michael Richards was the best career move these boys ever made!
Also, since someone brought it up, Michael Vick should have his teeth knocked out so he won’t bite my pit bulls while they’re gang raping him. Discuss.

  36. Whenever race comes up I think of a stand up act by Russell Peters, the Canadian/Indian comedian. Racism is probably the funniest thing going around right now, it is impossible to be racist unless you are white or at least that is the mainstream view of it. It is funny that Caucasians have become by far the least racist of the races, if that wasn’t always the case in the first place.
Political correctness is a plague, it is destroying most of the 1st world countries in the world, minorities have more power than the majority because they will scream victimisation if they are ever told to shut up or sit down, it is an epidemic, more dangerous than terrorism, racism or religion could ever be and yet no one will speak up on it because that in itself would be incorrect.
As for this, complete non-issue. As has been said, if anything in it was an issue, their teammates and team would have made it so. Using a stock standard cookie cutter joke as their sell just makes it more of a non-issue, they could google “racial joke” and that would come up in the top few results, it’s not like they were giving their views or anything. Some people just need to sit back, relax and actually enjoy life, as outrageous as that must seem.

  37. Cushings agent said a couple weeks ago that Cushing is very smart and he would never do steroids right? The NFL better double check his sample.

  38. in the world of sports that is driven by competition, if there was anything to this other then a joke, their teammates wouldve leaked it out….Clay Matthews Sr played for years in Cleveland drove an old beater and seemed to be loved by all his team mates…. highly doubt the jr is a bad seed.

  39. “Im not surprised that all of the white people who visit this site and post on this board dont think that this is a big deal at all.”
I’m not surprised by Black People who think that black teammates of these white guys decided to give them a racist nickname.
    Isn’t that what they did?
“You guys white, so we call you White Nation, cuz you are racist, cuz you white.”

  40. creating a fake group is one thing.
writing “kill black babies before they become criminals” is a totally different issue. it shows it wasnt just spur of the moment or a “team group”, there was some kind of reality behind it

You have a user name called Tek9 and you’re advocating against violence? Interesting…
Also, it didn’t say kill black babies, it said arrest them before they become criminals…I’ve heard this but black replaced with Irish and criminals replaced with alcoholics. I’m Irish and caught the humor in it, lighten up. I wouldn’t want you getting angry and start spraying 9mm bullets from your Tek9 now would I?

  42. Man, there are a whole lot of oppressed white people still suffering from the sting of racism here. When will our people finally overcome 4 centuries of slavery, torture and segregation and stand as equals with the black man? (Sarcasm)
All kidding aside racism is a crutch. If you’re not happy with what you have or how you’re being treated, work harder.I did it as a poor white kid growing up. Our president did it as a poor black kid growing up.
(Hypocrosy alert)Now can we quit the race-baiting and social commentary and stick to the issue that as innocent as these remarks were intended, you have to be smarter than to post them online where all sense of context is lost.

  43. Ohmigoodness! That’s like someone saying “I like my scotch like I like my women….aged 12 years” IT IS THE MOST HORRIBLE THING IN THE WORLD AND ANYONE WHO SAYS ANYTHING LIKE THAT MUST BE AN AWFUL PERSON!
I thank god that we have people with no sense of humor patrolling the world to keep it safe from anything objectionable (read: funny) for everyone.

This post made sense until you belittled USC’s black players by using “cuz” and failing to use verbs. Believe it or not, black men are able to say, “You guys ARE white..” So, thanks for the sentiment but next time try not to sneak in your own prejudices.

  45. Interesting that you put this up after saying you didn’t want asshole comments on the Jets Yom Kippur story – because no one here talks like an asshole when race is involved, do they?

Fair point…but I think we can have an open and honest discussion w/o racism and still admit that our black (African American if you prefer) friends struggle with “ask”.

  47. this was a joke name given to them by black teammates that they’re brothers with on a primarily black football team.
do you REALLY think it was serious? really?
come on guys, let the atheletes have fun with each other. America’s bullcrap PC-nature is overwhelming this country, so bad to the point that we’re telling football players across the country in college what they can/can’t say online? please.
i’ll worry about stuff that actually is worth worrying about.

  48. “Believe it or not, black men are able to say, “You guys ARE white..” ”
Sure, most football players are very well spoken, just like you say, sure they are. Especially ones that play for a program that doesn’t quite give a shit about academics.
Or Terrell Suggs, the guy who was pictured in college wearing gang colors and pointing a 12 gauge at a camera.
But let’s not dwell on reality all that much, it hurts sensitive black people. Knowmsayin?

  49. Once again Political Correctness run amuck. Obama will be flying in to apologize for the disturbing actions by these evil American’s so the emotionally crippled can sleep at night. REAL racism sucks, quit crying wolf !

  50. Hey Deanezag?
    Can you even read?

It’s not reality we’re talking about. It’s broad generalizations. And trust me, I’m not on the PC bandwagon. I hate PC because it masks people’s true feelings and it many cases kills humor.
But you come off sounding like an idiot saying there’s no racism in this story and then making sweeping generalizations like that.
But if you want to paint with a broad brush we could just say all white baseball players are racist because John Rocker was racist. So I don’t really care what Terrell Suggs did in college. It just doesn’t apply to this discussion.

I’m also no fan of Obama, but let’s give credit where credit is due. When has Obama ever cried wolf in regards to racism? Jesse Jackson? Yep. Al Sharpton? Oh yeah. Obama? Not to my knowledge.

  53. of course racism still exist….this is obviously a non-story…but to just dismiss this is ignorant and dumb……..we just witnessed a bunch of racist tea-bagging themselves this week…if you think they are not angry a black man is the POTUS you are ignorant of people who reside in this country…..tea party = racist parties
