Cowboys Looking At Linebackers

If anything tangible can be deduced by scrutinizing NFL teams’ official pre-draft visits, which can be a questionable exercise since many organizations use visits as smoke screens or for medical rechecks, then we could probably draw a few inferences about the Dallas Cowboys’ draft outlook.
The Cowboys had at least five linebackers among their allotment of 30 visits at their Valley Ranch team headquarters this week, according to Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.
Per the report, the Cowboys brought in the following linebackers:  Lawrence Sidbury (Richmond), Jason Williams (Western Illinois), Jasper Brinkley (South Carolina), Marcus Freeman (Ohio State), and Larry English (Northern Illinois).
So, one-sixth of the Cowboys’ visits were devoted to one position, which could mean they’ll be looking to add depth.  Or it could mean nothing.
Meanwhile, the next highest position team officials brought in for visits was a group of four wide receivers, consisting of:  Patrick Turner (USC), Mohamaed Massaqoui (Georgia), Brian Robiskie (Ohio State), and Brandon Tate (North Carolina).

  1. as long as we don’t get another barbie carpenter who is a bust and is an overrated special teamer as well. im a big fan of the jason williams out of western Illinois. he’s rising on major draft boards and he pro day stats are solid.

  2. Even if they do bring in a LB, his fate is simple. Ran over by Portis twice a year and burned by Cooley on wheel routes twice a year. Why do you think they dump Zach Thomas?

  3. Well, yeah. Lessee… they have all-world Demarcus Ware at one OB, backed up by… ummm. And then Bradie James has one IB slot, and they just signed Keith Brooking, who MIGHT work out. And they’re backed up by Bobby Carpenter, who… umm… well, was drafted real high a few years back. And the other OB is staffed by untested Anthony Spencer and whiney-butt old guy Greg Ellis.
Yeah, they might need a LB or two.

  4. Dallas will address defense a lot in this draft, be it secondary, LB depth and another lineman to go with at least, hopefully, one QB and one WR.

  5. “Ran over by Portis twice a year and burned by Cooley on wheel routes twice a year”
Man, you’d think that the Deadskins aren’t 5 for their last 20 against the Cowboys. Portis didn’t even score a TD against the Cowboys last year. Cooley didn’t bust a hundred combined in two games. No TDs.

  6. Florio,
I know you went to law school so math is not your strongest subject. (Except you can probably do a 40% contingency in your sleep.)

The Cowboys run a 3-4 defense right? A football team has 11 starters on offense and 11 on defense right? That makes 22 starters total. (You can exclude kickers and punters because I don’t think most teams use official visits on these guys.) If the Cowboys used one-sixth of their visits on linebackers and 4 (LB’s) out of 22 starters (total of offensive and defensive starters) are linebackers, then they actually brought in slightly less in the way of percentages of linebackers (16.67%) versus the number of linebackers (18.18%) who actually start for the starting 22 players on the team.
It looks like it means that the Cowboys brought in about the right amount of linebackers as they needed to bring in. When you think about it, given the difficulty in finding 3-4 linebackers, they should have brought in one or two more linebackers.
Must be a slow news day………………or a slow rumor day……………..

Since CP didn’t score I’m sure his 121 Yds gashing IN TX stadium did a number against the ‘Girls. Every pass Cooley caught was for a 1st down.

Impressive. For a Deadskin. MartyB scored more than those two guys combined. Points win games, dummy. You’re wrong about Cooley, though.

  9. the secondary needs help they get torn up and the lbs get run over, but portis?, really, the deadskins? since snyder took that team they have sucked. just keep thinking campbell is the answer and mr i get hurt in warm up portis. this is a 3 team race and the deadskins are not one of them as usual.
