Simeon Rice Still Wants To Play Football

Former NFL defensive end Simeon Rice still wants to be something other than a former NFL defensive end.
After being out of the game for an entire season, Rice still wants to play.
In a recent interview with WQYK radio in Tampa, Rice asserts that he can still get it done.
“Right now, if I was to put on a helmet, I’m automatically in the top five in this league at that spot,” Rice said.
“I want to say I’m the number one guy, I’m the king, baby.  But I’m not gonna say that because that’s always an earned spot.  So I’m humble enough to say, ‘You know what?  I gotta go back and do my work.'”
Rice said that he called new Bucs coach Raheem Morris about rejoining the team.  Rice said that other teams, including the Bears, are interested.
He also said that he’s not doing it for money.  “My motivation is going out there on top,” Rice said.  “Going out there claiming my crown back and saying, ‘OK, I reign supreme.'”
Rice said that his play diminished only because he was injured.  “I was a different person,” he said.  “I was running around with one arm on the field.”
He only wants a workout, not to be signed.  And he thinks something could happen fairly soon.
But he said that it won’t be with the Bucs; Rice says they aren’t interested.
And it won’t be with a league other than the NFL.
“I’m desperate,” he said.  “But I ain’t that desperate.”

  1. Hah! In your face CFL and Arena football..
We could use an experienced guy like him with the Raiders.. Let him finish on top in the silver and black 🙂

  2. Translation: I’m just the latest in a long line of morons who have spent their fortune and are now too old to play.
I don’t feel sorry for this jackass at all.

  3. “I’m desperate,” he said. “But I ain’t that desperate.”
Someone in the Arena league should frame that quote as a welcome present for whichever AFL team he signs for in a few months . . .

  4. Top Dog really? Top 5 What? I guess Mr Rice has been smoking with Ricky Williams. You ever heard of Jared Allen, Umenyiora, Peppers, Mario Williams, Tuck, Kampman…Yea these guys might have something to say about top 5 Rice.

  5. Screw Simeon Rice, always my most hated player after his comments after Pat Tillmans death. This guy just wants publicity, was never in the top 5 when he played so why would he be now?

  6. He’s “humble” enough to say that he’d be a top 5 player in the league even though no team will even take a look at him? There’s confidence and then there’s delusion.

  7. uh, “brooklyndoinit” you may have a point as in top 5 right now. But those guys you just mentioned, I still kind of chuckle because they have done approximately dick compared to Rice from a career standpoint. Give me Rice in his prime over any of those guys any damn day

  8. So, when he shows up to camp with some team and biffs it, what excuse will he have then? Pulled hamstring? Head cold? Out of Vagisil? Can’t run as fast when the moon is full?

  9. I think some people just need to learn when to hang it up. They go out as descent players and then come back thinking they are still that good and end up tarnishing their reputations and going out as has-beens. Once you have hung up the pads their was probably reason so think about that and sit your ass at home.

  10. “So I’m humble enough to say, … ‘OK, I reign supreme.”
    Boy, that is humble!

  11. “uh, “brooklyndoinit” you may have a point as in top 5 right now. We talking about right now, ITS ALWAYS ABOUT RIGHT NOW! save the past for NFL Films…

  12. Rice was the real MVP of the Bucs’ superbowl. The guy was a mennis against the pass, pretty useless agaist the run. I’d at least give him a try out. I’m sure plenty of teams would use a 3rd down specialist.

  13. He looked pretty good as a WR in Pros vs. Joes last night.
I wouldn’t mind the skins giving him a workout. Lets see if he’s got anything. I imagine if he still does, its a situational pass rusher who can go 15-20 snaps a game.

  14. Brooklyndoinit, you’re right about Rice not being top 5 now, but how the heck are you going to put a one year starter in your top 5 (Tuck) and leave off John Abraham, Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney???

  15. Tuck is a BEAST… better then Abraham and Mathis. Freeney, is on that down slope of his career. NIP TUCK Baby!

You want the Giants to cut Justin Tuck? What are you, an Eagles fan?

who does he think he is…Brett Favre??
LOL. New quote of the century. So funny.

  18. So he doesn’t want to play for a championship or to be part of a team. He just wants to come back so he can prove he is the king of defensive ends. Yeah, that ought to get that phone ringing Simeon.

  19. He got slammed by some nobody personal trainer Joe last night on Spike, I’d love to see what Jake Long would do to him these days!

  20. I love Tuck as a player but give him a couple of years before you go annointing him top 5. Freeney and Abraham are both under 30 and get double digit sacks every year.

  21. he should get his own reality show. in honor of his run defense, the show should be called “the matador”.
and, simeon isnt a real dennis the menace, just a loudmouth.

  22. Sure, Rice could be a great player when:
    a) he wasn’t injured
    b) he wasn’t sulking and complaining, and
    c) when he played up to his potential.
My hope is the Dolphin give Simeon a tryout and he ends up in camp alongside Cameron (Derek) Wake. Wake had 31 sacks in the CFL last year. A couple of days in camp should pretty much look after Rice’s current worldview…

  23. Of course he wants to come back. Does everyone forget that the guy was still kicking tons of ass until his arm injury. He had 14 sacks and 6 forced fumbles the year before he got hurt. That would leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth. He wasn’t “declining” at all…it was an injury. He has pride, and now that he feels his injury has healed, of course he has no reason to think he can’t still produce some big numbers. Here’s also another way to look at it. He wants to come back and play and he’s promoting himself. Who will a team take more seriously…a older veteran who had a serious injury who is saying “yeah, I might be able to play, I’d like to give it a shot” or a former stud pass rusher saying he can be top five now his arm is healed and he is not coming back for money, just a shot to prove he can still be the best. But you guys can keep bashing one of the best pass rushing D-Ends in history, who clearly is just trying to promote himself to get a chance to continue a career that got cut short.

“I’m desperate,” he said. “But I ain’t that desperate.”
Did I miss something? He asked to rejoin the bucs & then said he wouldn’t play for the Bucs? Or did Mr Morris let him know they are cutting back on old/washed up players (almost completely).

  25. Damn Simeon its some hate on here for 1 of the best DE to ever play the game in the 90’s and early 00’s era. and all this hate…Too many people want their comments posted with sarchasms….Respect what the man has accomplished….He could easily play situational pass rusher and get 5 to 8 sacks in a part time role….2 or 3 of those sacks would cause fumbles giving the ball back to the offense….STOP ALL THE HATE! LOL

  26. Puullleeeassse!!! Simeon should try tend to some unfinished business in Champaign…

  27. Simeon Rice is the Dennis Rodman of the NFL.
Rice and Gruden both out of pro football – a double good thing.
Chucky takes over the Irish next season as head coach; Sim gets a job from the Zooker at Ill then gets canned for partying with the kids off the field.
