LenDale Talks About Bush Situation At USC

In the wake of a damning report from Yahoo! Sports, which as Keith Arnold of CFT explains could result in major problems for the USC athletics department, Titans and former USC running back LenDale White talks about the still-simmering controversy regarding the question of whether Saints and former USC running back Reggie Bush was getting paid.
White talked about the situation during a Wednesday night spot with Sporting News Radio’s The Monty Show.
“I don’t know what’s been done and what hasn’t,” White said.  “I know that Reggie’s an incredible person, I consider him one of my brothers and I’ll go to bat for him anytime.  I don’t know what transpires in people’s personal lives, so I don’t know.  They may take the national championships and that’s unfortunate but however you look at it. . . . I’m not saying, and please get this correct, I’m not saying Reggie took anything.  I am saying that if Reggie took anything how did that help 80 other kids win a championship? . . .
“I don’t think if you got money, a flat screen TV, or however it looks that [those things] will make you go out and play better or beat somebody. I don’t think so. We get paid in the NFL and the Lions went 0-16.”
But to the extent that a school creates a culture that allows players to receive improper benefits while they’re still supposedly amateur athletes, the school necessarily derives a benefit because, in time, recruits will realize that playing for that school involves getting something more than room and board.
The fact that the Lions went winless despite getting paid misses the point, since every NFL player gets paid.  But if some schools look the other way as players get paid, word quickly will get around — and that school will get better recruits.
So while no one is saying the Trojans cheated once they got between the lines, it’s possible that there was cheating in how the team was put together.

  1. It’s just a shame the NFL didn’t let Bush wear number 5 with the Saints so he could donate 5% of all of his jersey sales to the victims of Katrina.
    Shame on you, Roger Goodell.

  2. i cant stand roger goddell but you must not understand the reasoning for the number slots for giving positions in the nfl if thats what you have to say about that gazelle..how about you give up 5% of your money and donate it to katrina victims

  3. @ BradyGazelle
I really hope that is intended to be sarcasm, bro.
    p.s. Goodell sucks

  4. Hey Mike, if you want to be a big shot, you might want to ask how it is that the NCAA has what amounts to a revolving door of slave labor that it makes MILLIONS from…and that spits these “students” out with nothing to speak of for their tenure…
And then it doesn’t permit it’s “student-atheletes” to make a buck.
Doesn’t that sound even a little bit odd to you? Isn’t it interesting that these fine, fine institutions, like the University of Michigan, which has a beatific reputation as a perfect academy with many, many intellectuals and eltitist asshole students, has a slave labor camp happening, with the complete cooperation of the NCAA and Big Football?
Why won’t you do something about it?

  5. What significance does that comment play to this post? I want to know why the NCAA keeps turning a blind eye to this issue. When does USC receive some kind of sanctions for improper recruiting violations?

  6. It’s for reasons like this that “Johnny Be Good” should be shown to every college recruit.

  7. BradyGazelle,
Actually, it was 25% and he later decided to make that donation regardless of which number he wore.

  8. If National Championships are taken, the Pats should have their 3 Super Bowls taken.
Actually, they should have the Super Bowls taken away regardless of this, they cheated. As far as I am concerned, they still have 0 Super Bowl wins.

  9. so why couldn’t he donate the $$ no matter what his jersey number was?
    shame on you!

  10. LenDale isn’t saying anything. He had free run of all eight HomeTown Buffet Los Angeles area locations for his run at USC.

  11. Yawn…another anti-Bush rant from Florio. Give it up dude….Kim Kardashian is not leaving him for you no matter what you do.

  12. “It’s just a shame the NFL didn’t let Bush wear number 5 with the Saints so he could donate 5% of all of his jersey sales to the victims of Katrina.
    Shame on you, Roger Goodell.”
So he can’t wear the number he wears now and still donate 5% of his jersey sales…??? I’m confused. What does wearing a particular number have to do with helping Katrina victims? The two are completely independent.

  13. Cheating? If you have talent, you deserve to be paid for it. Last time I checked, it was a free country. College football players bring in a fortune, especially those at a place like USC. Why should Pete Carroll get all the money?

  14. Championships.
    LenDale said “Championships”.
It’s championship — just the one.

  15. No. It’s a shame that LenDale White – a graduate of one of the country’s best-known universities – sounds like a freaking idiot.

  16. Hmm your argument is flawed Mike.
“the school necessarily derives a benefit because, in time, recruits will realize that playing for that school involves getting something more than room and board”
Though I agree that the Trojans do get a benefit, this precise sentence you write is flawed. The argument goes like this:
Recruits will look at USC because attending USC they would get something that they wouldn’t get somewhere else = A plasma TV and a ride maybe.
However, recruits already look at USC because attending USC they would get something that they wouldn’t get somewhere else = National spotlight and a very high chance of playing in the NFL.
So as you can see, the Trojans dont get an edge in their recruiting process by breaking the law and “paying” players, they already have that edge and it is as big at it can get.
This is wrong because they are breaking the law and that is that.
You are a lawyer, so you know it is true.

  17. This would be a great story if it would ever matter.
    Pro Tip: It won’t.

  18. While I agree with most of the posts here, these kids DO get paid… they just don’t see cash. How much do you think 3-4 years of tuition at USC costs? I’m guessing on the order of 15-20K a year. They get free room and board, free tuition, free books/supplies. Sure, its not NFL money, but if they make say, $5Mil off the football program a year, divide that by the 80 students on the team… you see where I’m going with this.
Now, thats not the NCAA, thats the college itself. The NCAA is a freaking racket and a half.

  19. I think Mr. White might have skipped out on his logic classes at USC, assuming for the moment that he was ever a “student”-athlete.

  20. I like the argument that they get free tuition(which as evidenced by Lendale, they take full advantage of) free room and board, and some other little things. That is basically like saying that slaves weren’t slaves, they got paid, it was just in room and board and food. It is ridiculous. Yeah, maybe they are getting “paid” just not NFL money, but they are forced into that situation by the draft eligibility restrictions. Sure they are “free” to do what they want before they can be drafted, but what options do they really have? CFL maybe, but that will kill their draft prospects and end up hurting them in the long run. They are forced to play in college. Good for Reggie if he was able to make some money off of this racket. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to have earning potential in the millions, but be forced to lose years of productivity and risk injury for a free place to stay and tuition, which unfortunately, we all know most of the big names don’t take advantage of.

  21. In four years (5 for some) they recieve about $100,000-$200,000. in goods and services. Plus an education that can launch them into the rest of their lives. They get to choose their own fields of studies. Free room and board. Free food and clothing. Even the small school jock/jockets get very nice perks. They get to be “cock of the walk” on campus. They are paid and paid well. Don’t come crying to me. Ingrateful punks.

  22. Theres rumors swirling that a major booster provided a tractor-trailer full of Twinkies to LenDale. Needless to say, he accepted the offer.

  23. Why don’t we stop pretending college athletes are students first. They should get paid something. They make millions of dollars for lots of other people but can’t take a dime from anyone. College basketball and football are complete rackets.

  24. That’s complete crap. I went to a top-tier university, and I got some (academic) scholarships, but I still have quite a bit of debt from my time there. These morons get into schools that they have no right being in, and they coast through with a degree in sports management or some crap….and people want to PAY them for it? Their payment, besides the possibility to get a degree from a school that they have no business attending, is NATIONAL EXPOSURE and a shot at the NFL with BIG MONEY. You want to pay them on top of that? How about paying the students doing the research that gets the university FAR MORE MONEY than the NCAA does. My research was personally responsible for getting my school about $12mil in grants, and I’m just ONE GUY. Where’s my check?

  25. I agree wholeheartedly with icase81, TCLARK, and EverybodyGotAIDS. These kids go to brand name universities, where tuition, room, board, and books are tens of thousands of dollars per year. Many graduate with suspicious-sounding degrees – “Interdepartmental Studies” is one of my favorites. But the potential it launches for them is limitless.
Sports at the college level makes an awkward transition from fun to business… I think the payment they get is more than sufficient.

  26. “So as you can see, the Trojans dont get an edge in their recruiting process by breaking the law and “paying” players, they already have that edge and it is as big at it can get.”
If that’s the case, why are they cheating?
There are other prime destinations around the country with historically strong programs – Miami and UCLA among them. So it’s not as if USC gets all the best players without trying. They still need to compete for talent. It just appears that, between Bush and O.J. Mayo, they go the cheating route.

  27. There is no law that says the best high school football players have to go to college. The rule simply states that they have to be 3 years removed from high school to enter the NFL. They can go do whatever they want to do in those three years. But the ones that go to college and prove themselves at the next level get the reward of being drafted. Having high schoolers play in the pros was a mistake that the NBA fixed (if only by delaying them another year) because they weren’t ready for it.
