DeMarcus Ware: "We're Getting Close"

[Editor’s note:  As mentioned in the update at the bottom of the story, this isn’t Ware’s actual Twitter account.]
Dallas Cowboys All-Pro outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware didn’t specify the precise numbers, but indicated that a long-term contract extension is on the horizon.
In an exchange with fans on his Twitter account tonight, the Cowboys’ star pass rusher disclosed that a deal could happen soon.
“Yeah, we are getting close,” Ware wrote. “Looking to stay with the ‘Boys for a long time to come.”
In an earlier Tweet today, Ware joked about the potential maximum value of the contract, saying it will be around $94 million before quickly saying he was kidding about that figure.
Of course, No. 94 is Ware’s jersey number.
Presumably, though, a Ware contract extension would eclipse Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro outside linebacker James Harrison’s blockbuster deal. Harrison recently signed a six-year, $51.75 million contract extension.
Ware, though, is 26 years old, five years younger than Harrison.
Ware registered a league-high 20 sacks, six forced fumbles and 84 tackles last season for the Cowboys in his fourth NFL season.
Last month, Ware told Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News that he isn’t concerned with the pace of negotiations.
“I’m not frustrated because at the end of the day I know I can play,” Ware said. “Like I say, I’m a Ferrari. The only thing I do is appreciate. It’s on them to get it done.”
Ware added that his deal should fall somewhere in between Harrison’s numbers and the $41 million in guaranteed money that went to Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth in his $100 million maximum value contract.
For his career, Ware has recorded 297 tackles and 53 1/2 sacks since being drafted in the first round.
UPDATE:  Apparently, this isn’t Ware’s legitimate Twitter account.

  1. remember that time he almost got the sack record but the Eagles made him disappear? That was awesome. Remember that 44-6 beat down he took? That was awesome. Remember that time he helped his team win a playoff game? Yeah, me neither.
Disclaimer: I know that the Eagles have no rings and the Cowboys have 5 rings from a long time ago. I know that the Eagles have been WAY better since Laurie bought the team.
When he said we are getting closer, I thought he meant that the Cowboys were getting closer to the Lions…

  2. Demarcus Ware threw your boy around in the first meeting, just like he does every year. You eagle fans hold on to that win like it got you something. Demarcus is better then any player on the eagles hands down. Must suck being the Bills of the new millenium, losing all the championships, but atleast buffalo lost super bowls.

  3. It’s not even about a game anymore…its about how much $ they get….and pimps in the press (and internet hacks) keep stokin’ the fire. Fans are of the NFL are being treated like chumps…but ye keep comin’ back for more.

  4. Demarcus sure doesn’t know much about cars.
Most Ferraris depreciate through the floor the second you drive them off the lot.

  5. @ smush rod – well articulated comment. The Cowboys are undoubtedly headed in the wrong direction (which coincidentally, is very much the right direction, from an entertainment perspective of course).

and you have a lot to show for your glorious run since Laurie bought the team, you have that NFC title parade to look back on with fondness.

  7. Good player, poor team. He’ll get his money from Jerrah or some other wank.

  8. Demarcus Ware is better than anyone on the Eagles. Its not even close. No Eagles fan has any right to complain about the Cowboys choking in big games. McNabb vomitted in the huddle during the Super Bowl. The Eagles have won nothing and wont go anywhere again this year, because the ownership is too stupid to realize they need a game breaking WR and not a collection of mediocre ones. By the time Maclin develops, Westbrook will be on his last legs.
Ware deserves a huge deal but it wont eclipse the ridiculous amount Haynseworth received. Something like $75 million should be enough

  9. Ware disappears like a fart in the wind during big games. The cowboys have only managed to beat the Eagles 6 times out of the 20 times they faced Andy Reid. Not much room for argument there but I assume the cockroaches will try and make one. I can’t imagine they would find one that is relevant after 1996 though. The last time the Cowboys were anything better than mediocre, Blues Traveler was at the top of the charts and Pulp Fiction was in theaters. I apologize to any Cowboys fans who are from the Dallas area though I would bet dollars to donuts that doesn’t include any of the Cowboys fans who post on this site.

  10. Yeah, Ware is better than the whole Eagles team. If Ware wasn’t on the feild it woulda been 84-6.
McNabb choked in the huddle – of the superbow! And then threw a TD to take the lead. Romo choked on Witten’s Cooley while watching on T.V…. and then probably fainted.

  11. The fact is…Eagles fans have this insecurity issue with the Cowboys simply because the Boys whipped them with such ease and regularity through the last 4 decades that most Cowboys fans consider anything from Philly as insignificant…and that REALLY pisses um off…lol

  12. @roughingtheholder:Ware disappears like a fart in the wind during big games.
Game at Giants this year, when Ware and the Boys defense balled all over the, at the time, “Best team in the NFC”. Ware “disappeared” in the Eagles game, as did the entire team. But ONE horrific game does not mean that Ware is some kind of mediocre player. There is not one justification to try to say either Ware or Witten are in the top 5 at their position, with both ranking about 2-4th region. Can any other player on Dallas say that? No, not at all.

  13. It will be interesting to see if the Giants signing away Canty has any impact on Ware’s numbers. Not that Canty is that great, but it’s nice having a 6′ 7″ 300 pounder keeping the O-line busy when you come rushing in.

  14. Eagles fans crack me up. Congrats on that regular season win! No, really, congratulations! Cowboys championships are so far in the past? OK, Bill Clinton was president, and the Cowboys won 3 of 4 in the 90s. The last Eagles championship? Dwight Eisenhower was president, in 1960. Were any of you even alive then? I wasn’t. If you need help with the math, that is almost 50 years ago. But, yeah, trash on DeMarcus Ware if it makes you feel good. Take whatever joy you can.

  15. who cares, redskins held the eagles to a combined 20 points over two games. Obviously both loses. Now we just need a Giants fan to come on here and explain how the giants destroyed the skins twice this season. Giants win because they owned everyone else. Which is why they should be the unquestioned favorite in the division, a 9-6-1 record is not anything to brag about. Losing to the cards is not anything to brag about. Skins beat the cards and philly twice this year, the team levels in the nfc east are very close except for the division winner. Even as a skins fan its easy to say, the Giants are the team to beat in the east.

Dallas is 4-4 vs the Eagles since Ware got there, holding him accountable for 12 games over 6 seasons that happened before he got there is pretty stupid…..even for an eagles fan.

Canty played on the opposite side of Ware for probably 95% of the Cowboys snaps. Ware mostly rushed from the weakside, while Canty mostly played on the strong side.

  17. “I know that the Eagles have been WAY better since Laurie bought the team. ”
You can’t even spell his name!

  18. “Another Cowboy who chokes in big games. ”
When was the last time the Deadskins played in a big game?

True, but if you had a back or TE helping with Canty, now that Canty’s gone, you can move them to Ware’s side. It may have no effect on Ware’s game at all, but sometimes when you lose a starter on the D line, it does impact your best pass rusher. I’m not saying it will happen, I was just wondering if it might.

Defensive players are allowed to move around before the snap, you know. Did you ever stop to think that it might have been other guys that made Canty look good?
