Kornheiser Out, Gruden In At MNF

As we were finishing up our op-ed item regarding whether, based on currently available information, Mike Vick should be allowed back into the NFL as of 2009, our e-mail box was been overcome with messages regarding a huge development at ESPN.
Tony Korhneiser is out at Monday Night Football, and former Bucs coach Jon Gruden will be replacing him.
The move is being sold as a consequence of Kornheiser’s fear of flying; some will wonder whether there was something more to the move.
“I am totally grateful for the MNF opportunity that I truly enjoyed the last three seasons,” Kornheiser said in a release issued by ESPN.  “I feel we got better each year.  My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true.  When I looked at the upcoming schedule it was the perfect storm that would’ve frequently moved me from the bus to the air.  I kept looking at the schedule the past month and wanted to find a way to quietly extricate myself.
“If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden.  He is the two things you most want — smart and funny — and has the two things I don’t — good hair and a tan.  I love PTI and am looking forward to continuing to yammer and yodel with [Michael] Wilbon until the end of time.”

  1. As good as he is on PTI he was brutally bad on MNF. It was a horrible fit, I think Chucky will do well, he can’t do any worse…

  2. Over/under on number of f-bombs in the booth anyone? They’ll have to institute a delay just for him.

  3. This is good news. I never liked Kornheiser–something about him just grates on my nerves. Gruden should be a huge upgrade.

  4. Tony is an ass. I did enjoy him busting Joey Sunshines balls on a regular basis. Can’t wait to hear all the F bombs droping. Make things a little more interesting.

  5. Wow… so they’re getting rid of the slapstick jackass and bringing in someone who actually knows football? Why didn’t they do this years ago? Now keep the celebrities and all of that out of the booth and call the game, and I might be able to stand watching again.
…question now is, who gets the tough job of bleeping out Gruden every other word?

  6. God those monologues were painful. I love PTI and had no idea you could go from being so entertaining to so annoying just by switching venues.

  7. Let me get this straight – we just traded an uninteresting whiner for a guy who will inspire Vegas betting lines on the number of unintentional expletives? I’ve died and gone to heaven. Welcome, Gruden, ya f@#$.

  8. MNF isn’t going to be the same without everyone ganging up on Tony for his lucid, irrelevant comments.

  9. Thank god. Now if they only would quit doing the interviews during games to promote other ABC shows.

  10. I’m sure the guy who is in charge of the drop button is asking if they can extend the delay past the customary seven seconds as he will need to drop every fourth f&#*ing work that Chucky says.

  11. Praise the Lord!!! MNF has half a chance at imparting reasonable football information during the broadcast again.
Dennis Miller was better than Kornheiser…

  12. This is a good move. It’ll be brief, as Gruden will find himself back on the sidelines sometime soon – but he’ll be a fun analyst. Looking more forward to MNF now.

  13. Not sure how good Gruden will be in the booth, and it seems like he’d be a short term solution, but really, who cares? What a train wreck MNF, and specifically, Kornheiser has been these last three years.
Perhaps now Monday nights will be watchable again. Hell I’m looking forward to football season even more now than I was before I read this outstanding news.
    Hap-py days are here a-gain….

  14. ”If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden. He is the two things you most want — smart and funny — and has the two things I don’t — good hair and a tan.”
I count four things Gruden has that Kornholer doesn’t: Hair, tan, smart and funny.

  15. Great move to get rid of Kornheiser. He was awful in the booth. He was like the one houseguest at your party that you couldn’t wait until he left, so everyone could talk about him afterward.
Gruden on MNF? That should be interesting. I bet he does really well. But I know how competitive he is; he’ll want to coach in 2010, so this is definitely a one-year solution.

  16. Thanks God!!!!! This guy was worthless and NOT humorous!!! Not to mention does not know an effing thing about football.

  17. Gruden was awesome at the Draft. He actually made the Draft telecast entertaining for the first time in … well, ever. Not only did he demonstrate his knowledge of the game, but he managed to be very funny (often unintentionally). Gruden is simply one of the best personalities the league has ever seen. I can’t wait to hear his next “concrete cyanide.”

  18. It’s finally safe to turn the sound up for MNF. Good riddance – Kornheiser contributed little to the game, annoyance aside.

  19. This might be the makings of the best football anouncing crew around now. I know people bash Jaws, but what made him really bad was going along with Kornheisers idiocy. The man knows his football and can break down a play, even if it is very elementary sometime. Tirico is very good, and I am excited to hear what Gruden can bring to a broadcast.
It’s like an early Birthday present knowing I’m not going to have to listen to Kornheiser in that booth anymore!!! Somebody pinch me!!!

  20. I could barely handle Kornheieser on MNF.
He found ways to make things boring and made comments that were incorrect and/or in no way associated with NFL football.
I for one am glad to see this.
It’s amazing they can’t find better broadcasters than the guys they currently have in place.
Madden and Michaels were the best ever…but I’m sure there are other broadcasters in other areas that could be pulled over and do a better job.
I remember when the Cards fired their broadcaster and we complained because we were so used to hearing him…then the new guy came in and was an up & comer in the business…he does a much better telecast.
Chuckie should do a great job giving some ‘inside’ perspective.

  21. A limp handless sock puppet can do a better job than Kornheiser…
At least now by blood pressure will only go up on a critical 4th and inches rather than Kornholes mindless, irrelavent rants.

  22. Gruden should be coaching. He’ll be entertaining on MNF but not half as much as watching him on a sideline or giving a post-game interview.

Speaking of “Kornholer”, are these four things you look for in other men??

  24. This is about the coolest news I have seen in a while. He may have worn out his welcome in Tampa, but there is no denying this guy’s intensity and personality. He took over the NFL Network draft coverage and is a natural on camera. ESPN did something that I think everyone will actually like for once. They just upped their ratings for MNF gauranteed

  25. “My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true.”
Yes that was all the talk about the NFL. The legend Tony Kornheiser’s fear of flying. What a tool.

  26. I’m a big Bucs fan and I’m still pissed that the BUcs let Gruden go. If the Bucs would’ve won at least one of their last 4 games they would’v e made the playoffs. I’m pretty sure the Bucs could’ve gone to at least the 2nd round of the playoffs. I’ve always been a big Gruden fan. Alot of people will say that Gruden won a Super Bowl with Tony Dungys’ players. That might be true but he’s the one who coached those collective group of players to the Super Bowl. The last couple of years of the Dungy regime in Tampa was the Bucs falling short. I can’t wait to see Gruden on MNF. IT’ll make me watch the crappy games of MNF just because he’s gonna be on it.

  27. He was as good as any other announcer. They all suck…I wish they would just do away with the commentary totally. Thats the best thing about attending the games in person…no announcers to take away from the experience.

  28. Now maybe I will take the mute off my TV on Monday Nights. Kornheiser was brutal. I thought he would just be another mistake that ESPN/ABC would never admit and continue to punish us year after year.

  29. ………………………………………… 🙂 ……………………………………………………

  30. “The move is being sold as a consequence of Kornheiser’s fear of flying; some will wonder whether there was something more to the move.”
lol…he must’ve thought he could angle for his own “Kornheiser Kruiser” ala John Madden….

  31. Another thing that Jon Gruden has that Tony lacks-actual knowledge of the game of football!! We can actually listen to the game now..We’d start out with the sound on, until one of us absolutely couldn’t take Tony any more (usually didn’t make it to half-time) & we’d be forced to turn it down. Tony would launch into one of his monologues, and go on and on and on…he would have been a better fit on “The View” than he was on MNF. The game would be playing in the background, almost as an afterthought. ESPN must’ve figured out finally that the GAME is the star of the show, not the guys in the booth. I never understood why they ditched Theisman…he at least could correctly identify a first down.

  32. The bald fool has less machismo than a gnat. Football audiences across America do not want girlie man talk about fashion during a football game. He never discusses male topics or conduct himself as a man.
Gruden also has works as receivers coach on a Brett Favre team so he will be able to discuss some Brett Favre items.
His discussions of officiating and certain calls will be entertaining.

  33. Excellent Kornheiser was horrible and Grudin is a rock star. Monday nights are cool again.

  34. Otto the auto-pilot from the movie Airplane would be an improvement over T.K.,I’m serious,…and don’t call me Shirley.

  35. Thank god, Kornheiser is much better on PTI. Soo tired of hearing Kornheiser on MNF

  36. First I was loving the thought of a season listening to Collinsworth on NBC… and now not having to listen to Korhneiser on ESPN. A very good move no matter who replaces him. I too have no problem with him, but MNF needs a smart mind in the booth who can teach viewers about the game – not a celebrity name on the commercials. No idea how Gruden will be, but I’m all for the change.
How long till we get some Prospectus-type guys on play-by-play?

  37. Kornholer is AWFUL!! He knows nothing about football, which makes wonder how he got on PTI (I guess they spoon feed him). No more silly anecdotes and terrible comb-overs this year!!! THERE IS A GOD!!!

  38. great day for football fans who hate tennis anecdotes. i’m looking at you, Florio.

  39. yee-haw!
not unload tirico and put in joe namath!
suzy yer cute i love you i want to kiss you!

  40. Ironically, I’m listening to Dennis Miller on the radio right now. Have a whole new take on the guy than I did back then – but man he grated on my nerves back then and I was glad to see him go. I wonder how different my opinion would be today now that I’m becoming somewhat of a fan of his radio work.

  41. See ya, Tony.
You can at least say you were better than Dennis Miller. Where is Dennis these days? Is he working state fairs or what?

  42. We all should rejoice to this news. MNF is horrible and for Tony to see the light and step away was a great move on his part. Now, hopefully, he will get back to talk radio and focus on PTI. Great news! Now PTI won’t have to travel to the MNF booth and look like they actually care about the MNF match up.
ESPN,once again, has ruined a great product, MNF, and i am happy to see that Tony got out before it was too late.
regardless if it was Tony or Gruden in that booth, Jaws sucks and MNF is a shell of its former self.

  43. “My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true.”
Nothing is legendary about Kornholizer–except perhaps his ineptitude. Good riddance.

  44. ha this is the second time gruden had replaced somebody with the name Tony. And we all know how that resulted.

Jade, I couldn’t agree more! They absolutely ruin every game with that stuff.

When Dennis Miller and his pseudo-lectual schtick was put out to pasture was a happy day. Tony may have had his problems but I don’t remember his head shaking like he had parkinson’s while laughing at his own intentionally obscure jokes while people were trying to talk about football.
