Two More Seasons For Ricky?

It’s hard to believe that ten years have passed since Mike Ditka and Ricky Williams dressed up like the scariest thing ever placed on the top of a wedding cake.
But, yeah, more than a decade has elapsed from the day on which Ditka, then the head coach of the Saints, gave up his entire draft and a first-rounder the next season for Williams, the Texas running back who actually was picked after the Colts took Edgerrin James.
Now 32 and playing younger than that due to a one-year retirement, a four-game suspension, and a one-year suspension, Williams says that he plans to play two more seasons and then to pack it in.
“I want to be one of the guys who can walk away from the game on my own terms,” Williams said, according to the Palm Beach Post (via Rotoworld).
“As far as when the ball is snapped, I don’t feel 32.  Maybe after when I get home I feel 32, but on the field I don’t feel it.  I think I’m in a good situation where I’m not going to be asked to carry the ball 30 times.”
Williams is due to earn a base salary of $3.4 million in 2009, the last year of his current contract.

  1. No, that debt was forgiven when he returned to playing for what was basically the veteran’s minimum.

  2. He’s 32 but essentially missed 3 seasons so he has avoided those years of tread-ware on his legs. Probably be able to play another 2 years no problem.

  3. That’s a good question. The Dolphins are paying him $3M, but he owed $8M to the team.
My guess is that if he gives the team two more good years, they’ll wipe the debt. He’ll probably end up teaching yoga or something after he retires.

  4. After you’ve served suspensions, I’m not sure you can ever walk away “on your own terms”

  5. @ youngone:
I think the Fins dropped that issue because it would cause their salary cap to go haywire. Plus, Ross is the new owner, and it wasn’t his money Ricky smoked.
Beyond that, I can’t believe he is due to earn 3.4 million in 09. I’m not saying he isn’t worth it (and he probably isn’t), but that is a lot of money to make when all that BS was just a couple years ago. Ricky is a great guy, but he was suspended for 4 games, and then retired to avoid a suspension, served the suspension, and he is still making 3.4 mil. When I look around the league and see some of these guys that haven’t been in any trouble not making anywhere near that, it kind of makes me wonder.

  6. In regards to money owed to the Fins technically he does. I believe that Stenberg got pissed at Ricky when he extended his contract to his year without constulting Leigh. I tend to argee because Steinberg was one of if not the only guy that stuck by Ricky all these years. The killer is he might have gotten a decent bonus out of someone this offseason.
I remember Ricky being asked last year and I believe he said he assumed it was gone. That was the last I heard of the subject but I’m sure its not in writing. With Huizeinga gone I’m sure it won’t be an issue unless he fails a drug test.
I wish Florio would confirm this but I think Ricky is technically still playing with the same contract he had with the Saints which was negotiated by Master P. I know that the Fins were able to go after bonus money paid to him as a rookie. Last year was the last accrued year until they extended him into this year.
If he wants to play next year and the Fins don’t extend him by the time they extended him this year and you can bet that he’ll either be gone or back in camp for vet minimum because they know he won’t go anywhere else. If he passed on the money less than a year ago he’ll do it again.

  7. I hate the fact 99% of people believe the Saints traded their whole draft for Ricky. It is just not true!!! They traded their second round pick for Eddie Kennison. Look it up and get the facts straight…thank you!

  8. ricky does not owe the money anymore, and he is not still on the master P contract. He got a new contract when he came to the team, then a new one when he came back from suspension. and then an extension last year. And when ricky does retire he is going to be a doctor. he’s in school for it right now doing his pre med. He wants to practice Osteopathy.

I only have one question about that…. the Dolphins got the best of Ricky- and the worst, … the Chiefs got the best of Eddie Kennison….. so what did the Saints get?

  10. Seriously Florio? The scariest thing ever? Having an interracial gay wedding is scarier than an impending nuclear holocaust, killer bees, or truck stop men’s rooms? Sounds like someone’s stuck hiding deep in the closet. Its ok hunny, one day you’ll see the light. I’ll never forget the first time I laid my eyes on Tom’s sexy behind as he was grunting out numbers firmly behind that very lucky center…
But seriously, you should try to be a little more sensitive to the gay community.

  11. I hated Ricky when he retired, but he has since become one of my all time favorite players….
2 posts in a row about guys who love the sweet leaf, is the next post about me?

Perspective, my friend. And a sense of humor. Then you’ll be fine.

  13. Ricky is actually talking about going to medical school after football to become a doctor. make all the jokes you want, but when is the last time you saw an NFL player attempt to do that after an NFL career?
the marijuana jokes are tired. i’m willing to bet more than half the posters on this site enjoy marijuana from time to time.
