A $5.3 Million Benching?

In the wake of the news that the Eagles have given quarterback Donovan McNabb a no-strings-attached $5.3 million raise over the next two seasons, a reader has raised a great point.
To the extent that this is the “financial apology” that McNabb reportedly wanted for his one-half benching during a late November loss to the Ravens, it was a huge one.
We continue to be amazed by the Eagles’ decision to give so much money to McNabb without an extension, and we can’t imagine the move helping to bring the locker room together.

  1. It’s like their front office WANTS to create turmoil. They’ve stopped being the Philadelphia Eagles and have become the Philadelphia McNabbs, sort of like how the Packers bent over for BertFarve for so long, only BertFarve was a much better QB when he was good than McNabb has ever been or will ever be.

  2. For once Vox Veritas I agree with you (except with your poor attempt at humor with your spelling, lol)

  3. McNabb is right there behind Brady & Peyton. I’d group him with Big Ben, and Drew Brees. McNabb is the least respected of the group. Philly should be happy to have him.

  4. Andy Reid and the Eagles have no balls. When McNabb started whining publicly about being benched Reid should’ve publicly told his QB that his own piss poor play was the reason for his benching and that the head coach is the boss. He also should’ve publicly told McNabb that if he doesn’t like the arrangement then he can either find a new team or a new profession.
But no, they just stuff some cash in his pocket.

  5. Oh really Veritas? Does Mcnabb hold the NFL RECORD FOR MOST INT’S EVER? Or does he hold the best TD/INT ratio ever? He’s still a top 5 QB. He’s getting paid like one for the next two years. More then likely it has a lot to do with the CBA. God your such a douche. You have NO football knowledge whatsoever.

  6. this site always tries to add some sort of drama to everything that happens…just leave it alone…you’re like the Debbie Downer of football blogs…except not funny

  7. He had a slump and got benched. Big deal. This was a decision to bring his contract closer to market that might pay off for the team in terms of loyalty when they do go for an extension. It will be very hard for McNabb, after this good faith decision, to open his mouth or be critical of the franchise. McNabb won’t be questioned by other players. He still is the leader of that team. The team has had great success under McNabb. If you want to define success as Super Bowl wins, then have at it. If you want to define it in terms of leading his team to the playoffs several times and in terms of winning games, he’s had it and has earned this and it’s not unprecedented.

  8. captain retard=== It wasn’t just Mcnabb that was playing bad it was the entire team. Up to that point they led the league in dropped balls, couldn’t get any push on the O-line. He was trying to hard to make things happen. Some of you have absolutely no clue. Sad.

  9. who care! the Egirls sucked before and they are going to continue to suck. Florio you should be writting about the only real football team in PA the stillers and how they are going back to back and how everyone on the Egirls team wishes they were playing for the steelers and how all the fans wish they had a team as good as the stillers. I mena really they on have their baseball team going for them, and really no one care that much about baseball. i mena come on the flyers are just as much of a joke as the football team.
i mean come on after tonight we are going to be the first city to have the stanley cup and the Lambo trophy in the same year, so kiss the rings bitches!!

    ___________
Ben Roethlisberger, Donovan McNabb and Drew Brees. One of these things is not like the others…
When he’s on the field, McNabb is much closer to Brees, but he’s hurt too often. I’d say McNabb is in the “Rivers, Brees, Palmer” 2nd tier (when on the field). Roethlisberger is in the “E. Manning, Matt Hasselbeck, Kurt Warner, Romo, Cutler” 3rd tier. Below that falls the “Pennington, Delhomme, Campbell” 4th tier and, of course, below that the “Garcia, Favre, Collins – washed up old men” 5th tier

  11. Uhhhhh Gee folks am I the only one who gets this? So they have a ton of $$$ under the cap, gotta spend to the floor, just spent almost as much for an LT, and honestly they have a company-man top flight QB who has taken them to Championship games and Super Bowls who at even $12.5 mill is still underpaid to the likes of Manning et al. (See 2008 Jets Farve pay and performance). QB’s who have performed as well are extremely tough to find and you haven’t strapped yourself with throw away $$$ should Kolb not pan out and you need to go to a free agent in 2012. I mean really with Andrews and Sheldon they play positions where there are more available value players for the price (via draft and FA). I do think they will also re-do the Andrews deal if he shows his head is back in it and if he goes as the starting RT and will prolly roll Sheldon’s pay into a shorter term guarantee as well (See L. Coles – Jets). I think the mindset of continually rolling the cap and bringing your QB to market is what is at work here. As well as having a $12.5 million insurance policy and available $$$ for a FA later. Whether it be QB or otherwise. I know they didn’t “have to” but I think all of the factors worked together to not do an extension and do it this way.

  12. LOL, capt. Fantastik, if the Eagles don’t want that stiff McNabb, I ‘m sure I’d be very happy with him QBing my team…the Cleveland Browns!

  13. CaptainFantastik you are nuts! IMHO
Donovan has played as well or better than 95% of the QB’s to take a snap since he came in the league. McNabb knows the window is closing. Reid knows the window is closing. 2 years 5.3 million is justified! They both know (and true Eagles fans know) what lies ahead when either McNabb or Reid leave Philly. I think we get it done this year! Go Eagles!!!!

  14. The Eagles are absolutely nuts to do this. No extension and 5.3 mil for an injury ridden QB who puked his guts out when he had the chance to win the big one ? He’s an excellent player but to give up that much and get nothing in return is one of most stunningly worst moves I think I’ve ever seen a team make.
He was already being more than fairly compensated and with the Eagles history of not accommodating players that wanted to renegotiate their contracts it is hard to imagine why they would make this move.

  15. mcnabb is a GREAT qb he has been a what 5 of last 8 nfc championship games! and no 1 thought he’d get there last year. and if the refs would’ve called dat pass interfence on the throw 2 kevin curtis we could’ve seen pitt vs phi. so before you guys start hating on mcnabb. think 1st he only had a good WR 1 time. which was with TO. and look where he went. (superbowl even though he choked). look at Brady, Peyton,Big Ben, Brees they all have had good WR’s to throw to. every single year! (Colston,Wayne/harrison/clark-te,Moss,Welker,Stallworth,Ward,Holmes)

As a Cowboy fan I wish they would keep Mcnabb for 10 more years.
Yeah, because the Cowboy’s have really been giving this team trouble in the McNabb era.

  17. This move is simple. D-Nabb gets more money and no more years because the team will be done with him in 2 years.
Reid/Banner: “Here’s an extra $5M to keep your Chunky Soupy eating pie-hole shut…and an extra 300,00 to keep your mom quiet too….”
Now Sheldon Brown, Max Jean-Gilles, and Shawn Andrews can pout more about getting a new contract. Nice!!!!

  18. All this is is P.R. on the Eagles side. You take the new guaranteed money, divide it in half, and the first half is a raise for this year to shut him up, and the other half is nothing but a buy-out for next year when they release him.

  19. “Donovan has played as well or better than 95% of the QB’s to take a snap since he came in the league”
Only if you count backups, emergency QBs, and every RB who’s thrown an option pass. But by all means, if you need somebody to barf under pressure in a big game, Donovan’s your man. Or if you need Chunky Soup.
McNabb’s never been as good as the hype, particularly when he lost the ability (or inclination) to scramble effectively. He’ll string together some good games to tease you. But when the pressure’s on, you can count on a 4th quarter 3rd and 6 pass at the feet of his receiver.
He chokes under pressure. Always has, always will. He’s just not that good. Career 85 QB rating in a West Coast offense isn’t HOF caliber.

If any school issued you a high school diploma, please go see a lawyer asap. Those two sentences alone are proof that you have a legitimate lawsuit.

  21. I C light pounder –
You are a moron. Learn to spell, idiot. The Steelers will never get past the Patriots this year. Roethlisberger can’t hold Brady’s jockstrap (or knee-brace for that matter), and Mike Tomlin will never get as many SB wins as Belichick, the best coach in the league. Hate him if you want, but he’s the best there is. Eat my shit.

  22. “Oh really Veritas? Does Mcnabb hold the NFL RECORD FOR MOST INT’S EVER?”
No. But he also doesn’t hold a lot of records that BertFarve holds. Then there’s the Super Bowl ring thing.
“Or does he hold the best TD/INT ratio ever?”
No. Steve Young holds that record. What’s with the stupid questions? Poll all coaches and fans who they’d rather have in their prime between BertFarve and McNabb, any that say McNabb are either stupid or lying.
“You have NO football knowledge whatsoever. ”
I know better than to attempt to ask a loaded question that I don’t know the answer to.

  23. LOL @ the Eagles fans who think Mcnabb is ever going to deliver a SB win. And after Donovan McWhiner, you’ve got Kevin Kolb to look forward to. Enjoy.
Oh, and Big Ben just delivered one of the greatest highlight reel performances in Super Bowl history…..to claim his 2nd ring. No QB in NFL history has won more games in the first 5 years of a career. Keep telling yourselves he’s over-rated and we’ll keep pointing and laughing at you.

  24. I C light pounder:
You are a walking indictment of the state of public schooling in Pittsburgh. Deciphering your posts requires a rosetta stone fashioned from welfare-check-based papier-mâché.

  25. “It will be very hard for McNabb, after this good faith decision, to open his mouth or be critical of the franchise.”
You would thin k that the $100 million contract extension he got would have accomplished that. Guess not.
“He still is the leader of that team.”
“The thing that Donovan needs — it’s been proven, especially this year — he needs other people to lead. He’s not a leader. He doesn’t want to lead” – Hugh Douglas
“The team has had great success under McNabb. If you want to define success as Super Bowl wins, then have at it.”
Um, isn’t that the point of an NFL season? To win a championship?

  26. Vox, you’re almost *always* the first one in on Eagles threads. Why don’t you just admit that you’re a closet fan? You LOVE the Birds (and you embarrass Cowboys fans, too).
Seriously, I’m surprised that you haven’t been booted off PFT for your completely classless Jim Johnson comments.
If you want to find an FO that seems to “want to create turmoil,” look no further than Jerry Jones. He’s got a completely impotent lame duck coach and a team of prima donnas who were last seen carping at each other on the sidelines at Lincoln Financial Field.

  27. Yeah, because the Cowboy’s have really been giving this team trouble in the McNabb era. ”
It’s getting better as he gets older. From 2000-2004 the Eagirls went 9-1 against the Cowboys. 2005-present they’re 4-4 against them. I like McNabb more and more all the time.

  28. “yup. roy e was a better signing. ”
What’s that, some sort of an attempt at a deflection?

  29. What, is Friday the day when the psychiatric wards allow their patients internet access? Seems to me like a lot of the “special patients” are taking advantage of it…

  30. “We” run a blog that assimilates football news…”We” have never actually run a football team. “We” have never even actually played football because Moma was worried about her undersized asthmatic getting a booboo. We don’t even have a million dollars. But “We” can tell NFL teams how to run their business and spend their money….”We” get full of ourselves sometimes.

  31. kingkenley,
“look at Brady, Peyton,Big Ben, Brees they all have had good WR’s to throw to. every single year! (Colston,Wayne/harrison/clark-te,Moss,Welker,Stallworth,Ward,Holmes) ”
I wouldn’t say that Ben has the best receivers to throw to. Why do you think he has to scramble around on almost every passing play. His receivers can’t get open. Take the final drive in the SB for instance. Every play on that drive involved Ben running around buying time for someone to get open. Hell, on the touchdown he had to throw a pass into triple coverage to get the score. He put it where only Holmes had a chance at it. It was a great catch, don’t get me wrong, but to me Ben was 80% of the reason they won. He should have been the MVP.
Brady has great receivers now, but he had crap when he won his 3 SBs.
Manning has had top receivers, but it’s hard to say how good they would be if he weren’t throwing to them.
Brees’ receivers aren’t great either. Colston’s success is based off of Brees’ talent.
So receivers aren’t an excuse here.

  32. All you D. McNabb haters take note. This will blow your mind!
If you compare Donovan McNabb’s 10 year stats to John Elways first 10 years stats you will find they are remarkably close. In fact McNabb was better in Comp %, TD’s and INT’s. And I would bet Elway always had a better supporting cast than McNabb. This is not meant to be a *crack* at Broncos fans. You guys if anyone can understand the futility and letdown felt when you know you have a great QB but just can’t close the deal. Elway did his last two years. McNabb will also.

  33. I C light pounder: Didn’t the Eagles beat the Steelers last season?
Roachkilla: I think you are smoking to many roaches. Are you still bitter that McNabb closed out the Cowgirls season last year? I guess you prefer QB’s like Tony Chokemo.
Plain and simple. McNabb has done more with less than any QB in this league, and people still think he’s overrated. He still threw for almost 4,000 yards last year (broke a franchise record), and did he have a true #1 WR? I think maybe McNabb wants to only play 2 more years with the new weapons he has now, and try to win the elusive SB. Why extend him to a meaningless couple more years after that, if the money he is getting now is all he wants?

  34. The only reason this doesn’t make sense to people is because it’s hard to imagine a scenario when a team (Philly no less) does not hold the leverage…
Furthermore, this is just the evolution of NFL contract negotiations. Teams show no loyalty, and cut players the moment the players’ services are no longer needed, or are too expensive. It makes perfect sense for players to recognize that and adjust. Why sign a 7-yr deal, with 3/4 of the money to be paid out in years 6 and 7, when the team can cut you (or force you to re-negotiate using the threat of being cut) after year 5? Sign a shorter contract, one that ends during a time when the player can reasonably foresee still being valuable.
This isn’t the first time this has happened; the Raiders’ Nnamdi Asomugha did the same thing…

  35. voxy vox, roy e. clearly was a better signing. if yer a total dumbass, like u come off as. a dallas homer from somewhere in mama’s basement in the eastern time zone, we know you.
    6-44*
while i dont think mcnabb is that good, the cowboys have no heart. they proved that.

  36. CaptAwesome says:
“What, is Friday the day when the psychiatric wards allow their patients internet access? Seems to me like a lot of the “special patients” are taking advantage of it…”
Nah, Vox is out of middle school for the summer, so he has a lot more free time. At least until summer school starts up.

  37. “Mr. Veritas, everything you say are the most insanely idiotic things we have ever heard. At no point during your rambling, incoherent responses were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read your posts. We award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

  38. Vox Veritas has to be the stupidest commenter in PFT. No, McNabb doesn’t hold the highest TD/INT ratio, but he has the third highest (yes that is 3rd all time). But you know who is really clutch, is that Tony Romo. I’d take him in a playoff game any day over McNabb.

  39. Veritas is always snarky this time of year. Don’t worry, when the playoffs roll around he will be quiet as a door mouse, just like last season and the season before.

  40. to the cowboy fans: keep dreaming. who’s backing up romeo this year? jon kitna? give me a hallelujah, brother! he’s such a christian he shares his pass attempts with the other teams.
to the guy who brags about pounding iron city light 16 ozers, congratulations on your team winning the super bowl. you had just as much to do with that as i did the phillies winning the world series. nothing. so post on the steeler news, and go back to your quality suds.
to florio’s contention that this makes a difference in the locker room, nothing this front office does could change the impression the vets in that locker room have of mcnabb. they already know him quite well.
to harrison asking what was the front office thinking? while this money would have been much better spent keeping dawkins on the team, the vets in the room know that what the eagles bought was two years of labor peace (no whining about a deal, etc. no national media asking him if he’s happy) from their quarterback without adding years to a deal that will probably still end at about the same time as don’s effectiveness.
no way the eagles are spending on a big signing bonus in advance of the lockout or strike or uncapped year, whichever it turns out to be. unless of course, its for bookend tackles. and it allows them to evaluate kolb for the same two years and gives them that much time to formulate and effectuate the post-mcnabb era, even if mcnabb plays his ass off and they decide ultimately to continue to put it off for even longer. and, as florio said about atlanta re vick, the eagles have to spend a certain amount, and with 24 M in cap space right now, taking the hit doesn’t seem too bad. don’s ego will work in the eagles’ favor as well, as he will see himself as now playing for a new contract, rather than just waiting for the current one to expire, which is probably how he would approached these two seasons had they had left things as they stood.

  41. So much for the Eagles being so brilliant….this is stupid giving more money upfront to a qb who is inconsistent and on top of that said a week ago he only wants to play a couple more years…some1 in eagles brass deserves to be fired….it appears mcnabb sucker punched the eagles going to get a raise for the next two years then going to retire….

  42. For everyone reading who ISN’T from PA…like IC Light Pounder…Nobody in Philadelphia is jealous of Pittsburgh. Sports are a nice little thing to have, but at the end of the day Pittsburgh fans still have to live in Pittsburgh.

  43. And Vox? The Eagles make bad personell pay decisions. The Cowboys knowingly make bad investments that paralyze their coaches. We’re the worst yeah, uh yeah…

  44. I know everyone likes to hate on Vox, but I’ll give respect where it’s due. Yea I think he’s a douche because he’s a cowgirls fan. but he isnt an idiot when it comes to football. And he is a true fan. He disappears in December just like his Cowboys. I do have a question. Why is it that the Eagles get criticized for being in a weak NFC/NFC north butt no one says shit about the steelers and the joke of the AFC north? IC light lb’er – your an ass. No one gives a shit about your second rate city. Try using spell check or something. Fuktard

What are you talking about. From what you said, the Eagles would have been stupid if they gave him garaunteed money MORE than 2 years (if he is going to retire). This was not a stupid move.

  47. smilergrogan says:
“to harrison asking what was the front office thinking? while this money would have been much better spent keeping dawkins on the team, the vets in the room know that what the eagles bought was two years of labor peace”
I think that you will find the the Birds will be better off without Dawk. Pains me to say it but he has not been good at being a safety. His leadership will be missed but other guys will step up.

  48. This was a great move for the Eagles and McNabb. My prediction is that McNabb has a great year and the Eagles will extend him at the end of next year. Kolb will fade away.
BTW, this could pave the way for a deal with Sheldon. They could add a little money but garauntee the rest of his current contract. Sheldon would be stupid not to take it.
Florio, I hear your poit about the locker room but having your QB happy is more important than redoing Sheldon’s contract. Yes, the team should have apologized tp McNabb for being the fall guy for Andy’s BS. Andy thinks that his system transcends all. For instance, the QB does not have it vs. Cincy. What does Reid do? He sets a record for pass attemps… He does not even have a RB on the roster for the week after Buck got hurt. Yes, it is much easier to play defense when you know that the other team is passing on every down.
I C light pounder: The Flyers are a joke… just like your city and your posts.

  49. GiantsFanInBirdsCountry says:
“Now Sheldon Brown, Max Jean-Gilles, and Shawn Andrews can pout more about getting a new contract. Nice!!!! ”
Shawn Andrews has never said or even hinted that he wants a new contract. Yeah, these guys will get mad about a top 4 QB getting locked up for 2 years when one is a good CB and the other is a backup lineman….. Go back to Jersey and be a Jersey Giants fan there.

  50. This was a wise move by the Eagles. This was not only to satisfy McNabb but also show the remaining Eagles signed to long term contracts that they are willing to negotiate towards the end of the contract. The Eagles have money to make this move and make their QB happy and also show people like Sheldon Brown Iwith little leverage) that they are willing to negotiate and pay market value. Adding one more year and some money does not satisfy this goal. The Eagles are a healthly Westbrook away from Super Bowl contention.

  51. gallaghedj311 says:
“Why is it that the Eagles get criticized for being in a weak NFC/NFC north butt no one says shit about the steelers and the joke of the AFC north?”
Dude, the Eagles are in the NFC East. The NFC East has always been considered one of the toughest divisions in the league. And that “joke of the AFC North” has won 3 Superbowls this decade. Which if I’m not mistaken, is tied for the most with the AFC East. Know the facts before you talk shit.
