UFL Draft Tonight?

Though we can find nothing on the official UFL web site or the web site devoted to UFL news (the advertising department has our condolences) regarding this event, we’re told that the four UFL teams will be holding a draft tonight.
The four head coaches — Jim Haslett, Jim Fassel, Dennis Green, and Ted Cottrell — will be picking players in an effort to fill up their rosters.
Workouts have been held in Orlando and Las Vegas, and players like J.P. Losman, Tim Rattay, and Ken Dorsey have been linked to the league.
It’ll be interesting to see whether any of the coaches puts dibs on Mike Vick.  Though Vick plans to pursue an NFL career, his only realistic fallback is the UFL.
And the fact that he’d give instant legitimacy to the UFL might make Commissioner Roger Goodell more likely to reinstate Vick for the 2009 season.
We’re in the process of trying to get more facts about the draft process, and when/if the picks will be announced by the league.
UPDATE:  A league official tells us that, indeed, internal player allocation will be occurring within the next day or so.

  1. Perfect time to start a new league…you know, with the bustling economy and all…

  2. The sad thing is……If it was on Versus it would get higher ratings than the NHL……

  3. I think it’s funny that you keep writing about the UFL as if it’s something to be taken seriously.

  4. What about Marcus Vick, he should be a top flight draft pick too after he gets out of jail.

  5. Wait, isn’t it in the NFL’s best interest for the UFL to succeed? With the death of NFLE and the AFL, there’s no farm system for coaches and players, no place to send the 5th-round rookie QBs to get reps, nothing. I can’t see how a “D-league” made up of NFL-experienced coaches and fringe-NFL-level players isn’t a win for the NFL.

  6. Wow, Ken Dorsey? If you want monster numbers like: 0 TD’s and 7 INT’s, then he’s your guy

  7. I think one of the most interesting things is that as big as this site has gotten over the years, the name “profootballtalk” remains applicable since obviously nfltalk was probably not allowed. I for one am interested in the UFL for no other reason than I am a Orlando resident full time. But I do hope for continued updatesas this clearly falls under the PFT jurisdiction.

  8. To be like the NFL the first round is expected to last nearly six hours with each team given 90 minutes to weigh their options, Rattay or Dorsey. The television coverage will be must see TV.

  9. Ken Dorsey had 0 TDs because of a combination of a weak arm, dropped passes and a god awful offensive line, plus teams blitzed the hell out of him – more so than anyone else. One thing he does have is a quick release and he’ll make good decisions when he has more than .05 seconds to throw. The UFL is a good place for QBs like Dorsey who have always been on bad NFL teams.
Quinn Gray is another QB who will have the opportunity to shine.
Rattay is a smart and athletic QB who has played well in the NFL and actually should be a backup in the NFL right now (Brad Johnson in Dallas, anyone?)
The UFL is a league that people like Losman, Rattay, Dorsey and Quinn Gray can go to. They wouldn’t go to Arena or CFL. So that right there gives it some creditbility. NFL scouts will be all over it.

  10. im kinda excited to see the league i think if they run in the NFL offseason they could become popular like the arena league was

  11. Brett ( aka Billy ) … Here ya GO!!!!!!!!! A new League You can really play forever now and get it out of your system…… Maybe they’ll Call it FAVRE – FL All the headlines will be about you and what your’e doing ( ooooopps never mind – pretty much already have that )

  12. How hard is it to have a website that is updated during the “player allocation” ?
If the UFL is something new and exciting why are they not Twittering the “player allocation” ?
Is the talent level that laughable?
Are they really allocating criminal players that cannot obtain work permits in Canada?
Will the “star” players of the league will be guys who just ran out of practice squad eligibility?
Why are there more stories about the Unknown Football League (my term) than the Canadian Football League on Pro Football Talk?

    Obsess much?

  14. What about Michael Vick’s cousin Aaron Brooks. I’m sure Haslett will try to get him back.

  15. I just got word from a very unreliable and unofficial source that the draft will be held online via sportsline.com as a fantasy football draft. Jim Fassell is hosting a pizza party afterwards, Jim Haslett is bringing the Welch’s grape soda, and Denny Green still wont be able to win a game as a coach.
