Titans officially add Ringer to backfield

Dumb and Dumber have a third wheel.

The Titans agreed to terms Tuesday with their fifth-round pick, running back Javon Ringer.

Ringer will add depth as a rookie behind Chris Johnson and LenDale White, formerly known as “Smash and Dash.”

A huge star at Michigan State, Ringer was worked hard throughout his college career. It appeared to catch up with him when he averaged 2.9 yards-per-carry in the final four games of his senior season.

Ringer lacks ideal pro size and speed, but the Titans have reportedly been impressed with his toughness over the summer.

He looks like a good bet to make the Titans over former second round pick Chris Henry.

LenDale White is a free agent at the end of the 2009 season and Ringer has many of the same qualities as a player. (Hopefully they have different eating patterns.)

If the Titans aren’t able to retain White in 2010, it’s easy to imagine Ringer taking over many of White’s short-yardage carries.

The Titans have only two unsigned draft picks remaining.

UPDATE: PFT’s Aaron Wilson is reporting that Javon Ringer’s four-year rookie contract included a signing bonus of nearly $150,000 for a total base value of $1.9 million, according to a league source. The deal includes a fourth-year escalator clause of $1.308 million or equal to the low tender, which could boost the total maximum value of the deal to $2.643 million.
