The pros and cons of a draft pick showing up in his new town

We’ve argued in the past that agents should have their unsigned rookie draft picks in fairly close proximity to their teams’ training camps, so that when a deal is done the kid will be able to get to work quickly, without missing any additional practices.

But there’s another side to the coin, as a league source explained to us last night.

Once the kid arrives in town, the leverage swings toward the team.  So if any details remain, the team might try to play hardball, knowing that the kid is mentally ready to ink the deal and collect his bag of money.  (Actually, there have been players in the past who think the signing bonus is paid in cash.)

We mention this because it looks like something like that might have gone down between the Browns and center Alex Mack, the 21st overall pick in the 2009 draft.

A deal was close on Thursday, he flew to Cleveland on Friday, and now they can’t get the thing ironed out.

We asked the source if it made sense to send the player to town without the team knowing he’s there.  Though that would keep the team from trying to squeeze out better terms at the last minute (if the secret can be kept), there’s a greater chance that the player will get antsy if he’s hanging out in a hotel room for multiple days.

Timing, then, is the key.  We think the best approach is to secretly send the player to his NFL city at the moment it appears a deal is essentially done in principle, so that he’ll be ready to sign and suit up as soon as any remaining details are worked out — without the team knowing that he’s waiting in the wings to get to work.

  1. Wow a Mangini team involved in possibly misleading or lying to another player. What a shock. If they ever decide to hand out an award each year to most ethically challenged NFL player/Coach/GM. They can all it the Mangini award. Has there been a more hated coach by his players in the NFL in the last 30 years than Mangini?
Good to see Mangini is still taking the short cuts to the unemployment line. Expect the Browns to play as lifeless unemotional and unmotivated football as his Jets suffered through the last 3 years.

  2. remember florio – the teams know the agents well – If a kid from the west coast shows up for camp in buffalo a few hours after signing then you know he was already there waiting – If this consistently happens with guys for the same agent then the team knows what to expect from that agent.

  3. Maybe Mack saw a picture of Kellen Winslow’s staph infected bean bag and though “Crap, I need to ask for more money to cover my doctors bills when I catch that shit.”

  4. If Mangini is so hated by players then why did so many Jets follow him to Cleveland? In fact I haven’t heard a single Jet player make a negative comment about him since he left.

Odd then that so many people from the Jets followed him to Cleveland eh? It must be that winning tradition in Cleveland, and not Mangini’s presence, right?
Or did you forget that the Jets under Mangini made the playoffs in year 1, suffered a boatload of injuries, not the least of which to their quarterback in year 2, and in year 3 were considered the best team in the AFC, if not the league up until week 9 or 10?
I think Mangini has a reputation that doesn’t fit the person, honestly. Why else would Shaun Rogers ASSUME that Mangini was snubbing him, and now they’re buddy buddy and Rogers is on board with the whole thing? Who promises people deals and can’t/won’t make the deal? Its not the head coach, its Mike Tannenbaum in NY. We already know he’s a lying cheating sunuvabitch. For all we know Tannenbaum said ‘Hey Eric, go tell Coles we’ll get him a new deal’ just to keep LC happy? And then when the time came Tannenbaum said ‘What new deal? We never said you could have a new deal…’ which in turn makes Mangini look like the liar.
But what do I know, I’m an Eagles fan and couldn’t care less about the Jets or the Browns. Neither one would have a chance of getting into a position to beat the Eagles in any meaningful game.

  6. Maybe it’s because I don’t play professional football, but if I was given the opportunity, I’d pretty much take whatever the team first offered me, and get my butt over to work out and train. Seems like holding out and trying to squeeze every penny, for both sides, is totally counter-productive.

  7. Or they could get a deal done before the morning of the first practice leaving time for the player to arrive in a reasonable amount of time. Takes two sides to get it done. The player isn’t the only “holdout”. I’m sure the agent offered a contract that the team declined to sign as well.

  8. I could care less one way or another about Mangini the Jets or the Browns. But no one can actually brag that the Jets were supposedly considered the best team in the AFC up until week 9 or 10? When did that become the thing to brag about. If the season didn’t have 17 weeks then bragging about that would mean something. Whats next “my team was the better team until midway through the 3rd quarter then we collapsed, We’re #1 ”
Seriously the Jets were 10-6, 4-12, and 9-7 under Mangini. Made the playoffs 1 year and never won a playoff game. Not Bad but nothing to brag about either.
Hell the Jets the same amount of games during the 3 years with him than they did during the 3 years without him (including the playoff win they had 2 years before he got there)
But hell I’m a niners fan so I barely remember what the playoffs are.

  9. Zinn, you’re a tool. You forgot to make fun of Mangini’s weight. Oh and don’t forget about the staph infection angle. As if the Browns are the only team with staph infections (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1853828,00.html)
Mangini ethically challenged? I guess St. Bill in New England gets a pardon for videotaping opposing teams and screwing around with injury reports. Get a life dude. Your obsession with Eric Mangini isnt very becoming on you.
