No news on Favre

If quarterback Brett Favre truly intended to make an inconspicuous return to the NFL, the best time to do it would have come during the 4:00 ET hour on Monday, when the football-watching world was transfixed by the Mike Vick reinstatement.

But Favre never does anything inconspicuously, even though he tries to create the impression that he does.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that there were no developments between Favre and the Vikings on Monday, which meshes with reports from the likes of ESPN’s Rachel Nichols and NFLN’s Scott Hanson.

Speaking of Hanson, he reports that a member of the Vikings organization who was certain last week that Favre would join the team.  Now, Hanson’s source isn’t so sure.

So now that the Vick situation has sort of been resolved, we can all focus on the manner in which the Favre fiasco finally ends.

No matter what he says, that’s precisely the way he likes it.

  1. So even when there’s no news, it’s still news? i was sick of Brett Farrrve a year ago. It’s time to move on…or move out.

  2. Here is the news on Favre. He is a MAJOR D_BAG.
Other than his durability (physical not emotional) he was at best average, even in his prime.

  3. Florio……Does NORAD track Favre like they do Santa on Christmas eve?…….”I thought i heard Favres sleighbells up the street”.

  4. In just 3 more days we get to find out when the next extended deadline for a decision will be.
    Can’t wait!

  5. Did you really just report that the news on Favre is that there’s no news? Seriously??
Guess what… there are plenty of players actually on teams at the moment that you could spend all day reporting that there’s nothing to report about.

At best average, even in his prime? Look , I’m tired of all his BS and I used to be a huge fan, but let’s at least try to be realistic. His prime included 3 NFL MVP’s and 2 Super Bowl appearances. He also hold all of the NFL passing records. To say at “at best average” either makes you delusional or a Vikings fan.

  7. Best case scenario…
The Vikings quickly scoop up Vick and Favre is suddenly left in the cold. This would be the most appropriate and poetically beautiful conclusion to Favre’s career.

  8. Florio I dont understand you…. You spend most of your time bashing Favre for things he doesnt say… but seem to be obsessed with the topic…. You would have hated on him even if he had broke the news of his un-unretirement today claiming that he can’t stand to let someone else steal the spotlight from him… I just dont understand…

  9. Brett Favre is single handedly ruining football for me. Go jerk off in the woods or pretend you are a hick (even though you are a rich hick) for all I care, just…
    Stop…
    Ruining…
    Football…
    You douche bag.

  10. No news on Favre? I guess if there were news, you would have a story about it……. oh wait…….

  11. Seriously Florio ??? You actually wrote this story and thought “yeah, I’ll post it” ???
This story makes me think this web site is really run by that nimrod Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Urinal. He actually authored a story that made front page ABOVE THE FOLD headlines in the State Urinal about 3 weeks ago that said “Brett Favre still retired”. Beautiful. No word on if Dan Marino, John Elway, and Bart Starr are still retired, but, hey, THAT made headlines ! Good work Wilde, uhhhhh, I mean Florio.
In related news, the earth is still round, and Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

  12. Farve will not share his spotlight with the likes of Mike Vick, and Florio will not stop reporting on the news that isn’t news. I think the title says it all. “No news on Favre.” The best part is the one alluding to the source with knowledge of the situation that has no knowledge of the situation. The only real news in this saga is the detrimental affect it has and will continue to have on the Vikings.
Does anyone else get kicked kicked off this site for “Comment submission errors?” It says I’m logged in, but it’s a liar. Before Florio went Hollywood. I stayed logged in forever.

  13. And yet AGAIN: Brett saaaaaaaid the “30th”.
Anything else is speculation to create a story where there really just isn’t any.

  14. To all YOU douche bags (Favre Haters)….Don’t Hate the Hawg…Hate the Game!

  15. Florio, in the interests of equal time, being as you have a clear hate-on for old #4, here are some things that go into the decision he has ahead of him. I DARE YOU to give this post some special space in your column or use these arguments in one of your own. Let’s see if you got the cajones.
We LAYMEN can watch the games, even watch practices, etc., but WE ARE NOT the ones who have an honest-to-god stake in the outcome of Brett’s decision, are we? Brett at 39-40 years old is the one who will be taking the reps, and taking the hits… Something else to consider: he must be prepared to hear boos from people he has up until a little over a year ago, played his ass off and played his HEART out for. He has probably had sleepless nights about this, prayed, consulted and searched his soul and questioned his motivation half to death. To YOU AND ME, it’s entertainment. To HIM, this is half a YEAR OF HIS LIFE. If it goes badly, he will not get it back, ever. It is about asking sacrifices from his family AGAIN. It is about giving the MEDIA their favorite whipping boy–AGAIN. It is another year under a white hot spotlight in high def, everywhere, ALL THE TIME. AGAIN.
Add in the new element that there will be players clad in green and gold, guys he has been to the mat with, whose role will now be to hit him HARD and serve him up a humiliating loss if they can. Those Packers will not take it easy on him once he puts on that purple, either. Once the games start, they will be coming full force. For some who may be angry with him for whatever reason, there will be even more motivation. NOT TO MENTION, there will be a footnote in the record books for a player who manages to end Brett’s streak of starts. AND IF YOU DO NOT THINK that TT et al will not have a few errrr…”motivating words” for the fellas just before they take the field against a player who has made him look a fool to at least HALF the country, you are being naive.
People act like Brett is costing them money if he waits to decide until the 30th–the date HE gave us–or that it is a conscious decision he is making just to personally drive them nuts or to get attention. But NO ONE except another person with the last name FAVRE has as much stake in this decision or has as much to gain or lose.
And when was the last time this man was a free agent?

  16. Okay, to all you Favre haters, and especially to DeVoodoo: take Vick over Favre? Seriously? Lets check Favre’s productivity since Vick the Dogslayer has been on “vacation”: 13-3 and hosting the NFC Championship game, all while setting every freakin’ passing record (INTs included!!), and 9-7 with a crappy Jets team that was 4-12 the year before. Vick: making license plates, attending anger management classes, losing every endorsement he had, etc. I wonder who I would want. All I have to say to Vick’s potential new team/teammates: lock up your dogs, and watch your ass in the shower. Go Favre.

  17. How do I get your job Florio? Great article! You know, at my job if I didn’t do anything but told people I was working by not working, I wonder if I would be called an idiot.

  18. I agree with empty13
Is this article, in the end, really about Brett Favre?

  19. hate to say i agree with hell yeah but hell yeah i do.
while i think vick will fracture a locker room, i suspect favre wont last all year.

  20. If Farve wanted to get his credability back he needs a classy gesture. How about ditching the streak when he draws level with Jim Marshall and having a few games rest. I’m not sure of the details but I understand he draws level a few weeks into the season. It would be a gesture that would go down well with Vikings fans, He’d still have the QB streak and it would freshen him up for the December/January bit of the season

  21. Don’t disrupt the momentum of my beloved Vikings. Come with a team mentality and a positive attitude or stay the F@ck home!!!

  22. Brett Favre is one my all-time favorite players. Nothing has changed that.
Most of the hand-wringing “will he or won’t he” anxiety is from the media coverage anyway, people.
I hope he comes back with the Vikings and tears it up.

The Vikings already have a running back AND a QB that can’t throw the ball. Why would they need Vick?

That is the most retarded thing I’ve ever heard of. This is the NFL, not MLB! Favre or any competitor for that matter would never concede to such a silly thing, especially Favre. He won’t come out of the game unless it’s on a stretcher.

  25. You guys are like a bunch of whining women. So what some guys wants to extend his career and get paid millions. Boo hoo! And the dork that saysFavre’s ruining football needs to get a frickin’ life!

  26. The scary thing is that this is part one of a five part series that Florio is doing on “No news on
Favre.” Unless there is new news between now and then and then no news will be old news because of the new news.

  27. This has the look of “about the money” to me. I mean really, look he wants to play, the Vikes want him. The arm seems ok, his family says they are all for it. They even booked hotel rooms. Its all about the contract, but both sides are smart enough to make it sound like old Bart cant make up his mind. Its an easy play because everyone will believe it. Case closed. Mr. Favre will be in Minnesota within a week.

  28. So many people love Brett Favre that every news organization and website puts his name out there for ratings and website clicks.
All of you that complain just don’t realize how much America loves Brett Favre.
Think about how a guy who stays at home (and talked to the press briefly only about 4 times this off season) commands so much attention.
Look how many clicks and comments a simple “No news on Favre” statement gets.
The big story is that he and the rest of America wish he would play for decent team and not a lowlife team like minnesota’s.

  29. I couldn’t care less about Favre, but when will all of his apologists go away?

  30. No Bob. I would say that of the non Viking fans that I have talked to about 70-80% think that it would be a good fit, and that he should do it. Mostly because of the fact that Mr. Peterson is a beast, and if he had a good QB, well you know… BOOM, 2000 YARDS AND NFL MVP. And maybe a good run in the post season.

  31. most people on here are complete idiots. brett favre is probley the best qb to ever have played the game period. the man came out on the day his father died and played one of the best games he ever did. thats not somone who is average at best, thats an idol. all u stupid retards who are downing favre should all go jump off a cliff cuz u have no idea what ur talking about

  32. BRENT WENT 13-3 AND THE PACK DIDN’T WANT HIM BACK….
HE TOOK TH JETS FROM 4-12 TO 9-7 AND THEY DIDN’T WANT HIM BACK….
HOW MANY TEAMS WANT HIM NOW ?????????
    JUST THE QUEENS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT DOES EVERYBODY IN THE NFL KNOW THAT YOU DON’T ?????????????????????

  33. BRENT COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE QUEENS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE ONLY WANTS TO PLAY AGAINST THE PACK CAUSE TT HURT HIS FEELINGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO YOU REALLY WANT A 40 YR. OLD QB W/ THE EMOTIONAL FORTITUDE OF A 13 YR. OLD GIRL RUNNING YOUR TEAM ??????????????????
    1996 WAS A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME AGO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. I BET JEFF GEORGE COULD THROW 29 PICKS FOR THE PURPLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…AND HE’D DO IT FOR MINIMUM WAGE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to chime in with some thoughtless logic. By your account, teams should still be interested in Elway, Aikman, Young, etc….

  36. okay cheddar is bettar i can tell ur a complete idiot by your user name. the man pretty much turned the jets year around and made them the 1rst team to beat tthe TN titans this previous year. he had an 81 qb rating. true thats not elite but still damn good. e threw for nearly 3 and a half thousand yards. completed well over half his passes, and had 22 touchdowns. manning, best of the year only threw for 5 more touchdowns than that. point is farve has still got it and its a shame he will be not be returning
