NFL still working on Twitter policy

We mentioned a few weeks back that the NFL was working on a global policy regarding the use of Twitter and other social media platforms and web sites.

But with the day of the first actual game of the 2009 season approaching, the policy has not yet been finalized.

Judy Battista of the New York Times mentions that the league is working on a policy for game day use of social media such as Twitter. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells us that it will be a “broad” policy regarding “the use of social media, including Twitter, by players, coaches, and clubs on game days.”

It’s also possible that the league will craft a policy regarding the use of Twitter by media covering NFL games. Currently, there’s a policy against press-box live blogging that provides a play-by-play account of the game.

Then again, given that Twitter can be used by anyone with a phone, the fact that any member of the paying audience can do it suggests that it wouldn’t be fair to prevent the media from doing it, too.

But even with a game day policy regarding the use of Twitter by players, we’re looking forward to the tweets that will be posted from the hotel room the night before a game, from the plane ride home, and/or from a player’s apartment in the wee hours after a game, after said player’s fingers possibly have been loosened by the consumption of a few celebratory (or otherwise) cocktails.
