Thanks to a reader (actually, given the reaction that some of you have had, we’re not sure that gratitude is the proper emotion) who pointed out an August 16 item in the New York Post indicating that Eagles quarterback Mike Vick was drinking Grey Goose vodka last Saturday, we’ve been delving into the question of whether Vick has violated the terms of his reinstatement to the NFL.
The language of the July 27 letter from Commissioner Roger Goodell implies that Vick is prohibited from drinking alcohol. But the league has been reluctant to state whether any consumption of alcohol constitutes a violation of the terms of Vick’s reinstatement.
The Eagles have chimed in on the matter, and the team’s position strongly suggests that Vick is permitted to drink some alcohol, but not a lot.
“We are aware of the report and it is not in conflict with terms of his probation or reinstatement with the NFL,” Eagles spokesman Derek Boyko told Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Still, at a time when Vick is expected to be “proactive” in his off-field pursuits, we think Vick is taking a huge risk by drinking any alcohol -- especially since Eagles owner Jeff Lurie has made it clear that the decision to give Vick a second chance could potentially be reversed at any time.
