Browns fans hoping for fewer carries by Jamal Lewis this season may get their wish.
Rookie fifth sixth-round pick James Davis has received a “lot of work” with Cleveland’s first-team offense at practice, as the Browns possibly prepare to employ a committee approach at running back.
Many expected fourth-year back Jerome Harrison to step into a bigger role, but he’s spent the last two weeks of practice riding a bike. In the meantime, Davis’ hard-charging style has impressed.
The Clemson product showed some nifty footwork and surprising deep speed in a 81-yard touchdown scamper against the Lions in last week’s preseason game.
Davis was a highly regarded prospect as a junior who saw his draft stock slip when he lost playing time in his senior season; he’s used to splitting carries. If the team gets Harrison more in the mix on passing downs, the group has some potential to surprise.
Anything that prevents Lewis from carrying the ball 279 times for a 3.6 yards per attempt average is probably worth a shot.
