Bengals get down to 54, with an exemption

The Cincinnati Bengals have made the moves necessary to get down to 53 players.  (Actually, they only have to be at 54, for now.  More on that later.)

Receiver Antonio Chatman was placed on injured reserve due to an ankle problem.  The rest of the players removed from the roster have also been removed from the payroll.

Vested veterans cut by the Bengals were linebacker Darryl Blackstock, linebacker Jim Maxwell, and defensive tackle Langston Moore.

Eighteen players were waived:  safety Marvin White, guard Andrew Crummey (injury settlement), safety Corey Lynch, guard Jason Shirley, defensive end Chris Harrington, running back James Johnson, tight end Kolo Kapanui, receiver Maurice Purify, receiver Freddie Brown, tight end Darius Hill, defensive tackle Ventrell Jenkins, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald, cornerback Rico Murray, tackle Augustus Parrish, fullback Chris Pressley, linebacker Dan Skuta, kicker Sam Swank, and fullback Fui Vakapuna.

Brown, McDonald, and Vakapuna were seventh-round picks of the Bengals in 2009.

Meanwhile, the Bengals will have a roster exemption through September 14 for first-round rookie tackle Andre Smith, who was signed less than a week ago.
