Victim in alleged Harrison shooting dies

In the item posted earlier this morning regarding the case against Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, we mentioned the Marvin Harrison situation in Philly as proof of the reality that, sometimes, prosecutors opt not to pursue charges out of fear that a conviction can’t be obtained, even if prosecutors subjectively believe that a person is guilty of a crime.

The mention of the Harrison case caused me to make a mental note to check on the status of the most recent twist — the July 2009 shooting of the man who claimed that Harrison shot him in April 2008.

Coincidentally, a reader has submitted a link to the newest development.  The man who was shot seven times on July 21, Dwight Dixon, died on Friday.

Before slipping into a coma, Dixon reportedly told police that he believes Harrison was behind the shooting, apparently because Dixon had sued Harrison as a result of the April 2008 incident involving a gun owned by Harrison.

In late July, police served a search warrant at Harrison’s aptly-named Playmakers bar in Philly.  The search was aimed at checking footage from surveillance cameras for images of the man who can be seen in separate surveillance video captured at the scene of the shooting.

Absent compelling evidence that either has not been uncovered or disclosed, it now appears that Harrison is in the clear as to both incidents.

  1. The cops probably don’t have the time.
Do you know how many killings there are in Philly on a daily basis?
If the left thought Iraq was a quagmire, they should surely want to pull out of Philadelphia.

  2. I’d like to put out one thing here: Dixon was not an alleged victim as the title seems to suggest. I’m sure it was not meant that way, and the alleged part is applicable to the fact that Harrison allegedly had the shooting arranged or did the shooting himself in the first place… but the title can throw you off. In his passing we should make sure to show the proper respect to the victim as I am sure you meant to do… just passing that on.

  3. Again, as I stated about this before. Why, if you think Harrison had something to do with shooting you a year ago, would you go to his bar? If you’re sure he was in on it, wouldn’t it be safe (heehee) to say that there may be some trouble?
So, for other readers, the lesson here is, if you think someone shot you, and they own a bar, do not go to that bar. Or at the very least, don’t forget your kevlar.

  4. No smartass comments, no shot at Harrison… just condolences that a man lost his life, no matter what the case may have been.

  5. “A few days after the shooting, police released surveillance images captured by a Valu-Plus security camera that showed the gunman – a thin black man in a dark hooded sweatshirt, jeans and white sneakers – fleeing the scene.”
Did they at least run a clean route?

  6. How can he be an alleged victim? He was shot and has died, there’s no alleged to any of it. Unless that body is an apparition.
Now there can be an alleged shooter because lawyers are afraid of being sued for stating the obvious.

  7. As I said when this news broke.
It was likely this wasn’t his first time of being shot, and if he awakes from the coma it likely won’t be his last.
    Unfortunately it was his last.
Will the truth ever be known? Doubtful.
If Harrison is involved, then hopefully he pays for it. If he wasn’t then I hope they catch the person that did it.

    Alpheratz, you’re an idiot.
There were 322 murders in Philadelphia in 2008.
    Chicago had 508 in 2008
New York had 494 in 2008, the first time in 44 years of record keeping they had below 500.
Most people can’t separate between Camden and Philly, which is astonishing considering they’re in different states…with different police departments…and different state police…and different governments…and different everything. Stop it, you sound moronic. I have lived here my whole life and I have no issues walking around late at night.

  9. “Dixon was not an alleged victim as the title seems to suggest”
“How can he be an alleged victim? He was shot and has died, there’s no alleged to any of it. ”
    ^^^^^^^
Am I missing something here? Where does the title or article say he is the “alleged victim”? Harrison is referenced as the alleged shooter.

  10. Marvin Harrisons legal case, along with his heftly price tag, may force an early retirement for him. As for the evidence, i thought the fact that a rare gun was used to shoot this person in the first place, and it so happens Harrison owns that type of gun. How is there no evidence to run a case here? They can determine if the gun was the one used. They can not confirm Harrisons whereabouts. I think we may see him in jail eventually. Right next to Plaxico, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, & the guy from survivor…

  11. It doesn’t say alleged victim, it says alleged harrison shooting. Meaning someone says he shot him or had something to do with the shooting.
Reading comprehension- it’s a wonderful thing.

That’s classy, considering this article is about a man dying.

  13. Richard Hatch is the guy from survivor, and he is still alive, and hes crazy, and he likes to run around naked, and he likes boys, Cowboys…
Canada lied to you Scomibord, they dont have him. Watch your back, the Hatchman may be lurking…

  14. Future clandestine conversation:
Ben: I wish this whole thing would just go away…
Marvin: Oh, “go away” really? That can be arranged.
Ben: (winking ala George Costanza) Nah, that would not be right.
    Marvin: (grinning) Ok, message received!

  15. Oh……..Look, another convicted felon, who has done nothing in his life but be a strain on society, has been shot and killed……I’m so appalled, I might take the quote from his scumbag lawyer and use it to educate……Ready…..
“He was a very honest person who made some mistakes in his life and was in the process of moving on until he got caught up in something he didn’t want to be caught up in,”
    ———————————
Now, lets honor the passing of a man, who was 33 years old, made a few mistakes, you know jail is a mistake when ya get caught, but he was honest and moving on, just another model citizen…….Yeah right…..At least taxpayer dollars, don’t have to feed, house, and provide health care for him……

Perfect example of internet trolling. Post #1 is a mature, reasonable post regarding the death of an innocent man. Post #2 is the textual masturbation of a scumbag who deserves every bad thing that comes his way. Congrats, Alpheratz, you’re not only a moron, you’re a worthless POS to boot.

  17. Well I guess that “kills” any chance of Florio’s efforts to throw the book at Harrison
The case has been shot down.
So has this story finally died?
    That’s an ender.
Sorry about the crass humor but the vic was a skell and this whole site is crass. If you don’t like it you can kiss my crass.
PS – Maybe Marvin and OJ can team up to find the real killers.

  18. jackal,
    You’re good at name calling.
Tell me what I said that isn’t true.
Not so good at that, I reckon.
    Requires brain function, eh?
