Canty finally off Giants injury report

After losing defensive tackle Jay Alford for the season, the Giants won’t have the entire defensive line they dreamed up during their aggressive offseason.

But they should have free agent addition Chris Canty available for Week One against the Redskins. For the first time in a month, Canty is not on the team’s pre-practice injury report. Canty is moving to defensive tackle in New York’s 4-3 scheme.

Canty could be added to the injury report later, but he’s practicing fully again for the first time and should be ready for the game against Washington.

“If it makes you feel better, I’ll put him on there,” Coughlin told reporters.

Fellow free agent addition Rocky Bernard is also recovered from a preseason injury, so Washington’s aging offensive line will have their hands full on Sunday. Coughlin will try not to overwork Canty as he gets up to speed.

“We’ve got to watch this, obviously,” Coughlin said. “Anybody who’s done as little as he’s done in the preseason, you have to be careful.”
