Mayo spotted on crutches

In the days after the 2007 AFC title game, news that quarterback Tom Brady was wearing something on his ankle other than a fancy bracelet captivated the football-watching world.

But there’s been a sighting today that could be as problematic for the Patriots defense as Brady’s bad wheel was for the New England offense.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo, per the Boston Globe, was on crutches in the team’s locker room Thursday, with a brace on his knee.

There have been mixed signals regarding Mayo’s condition. The Globe recently reported that Mayo suffered a Grade 3 MCL sprain against the Bills, and that it could keep him out as long as two months. But the team did not list Mayo as “out” for Sunday’s game on Wednesday’s injury report, which implies that there’s a chance he could play.

And since only the Jets fudge the injury report, we must assume that there’s indeed a chance Mayo will play.

And, no, sarcasm isn’t always obvious in written form.

The Patriots face the Jets on Sunday, in the closest thing the Jets apparently have seen to a Super Bowl since 1969.
