Tony Dorsett thinks Romo hasn't done anything to deserve stardom

Like anyone else, we formulate views and then we keep our eyes open for opinions that agree with ours.

And we’ve found something that meshes with our take on Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Actually, the recent comments of Cowboys Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett go farther than anything we’ve ever said about Romo.

Here’s what Dorsett had to say about Romo, during a Monday visit with Chris Myers and Steve Hartman of FOX Sports Radio, via SportsRadioInterviews.com.

“Well, for one thing, I don’t know why on God’s earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League,” Dorsett said.  “Tony is very young in his career.  Not to say you can’t be young in your career and be a superstar because you’ve got one up there in Minnesota in Adrian Peterson.

“But the thing is this:  You have a guy who hasn’t done much and quarterbacks in the National Football League, most of them go through this growing curve.  [Romo] hasn’t gone through that growing curve, but he was anointed this great player all of a sudden.  Now he’s having to live up to that.  And obviously Tony has some deficiencies. I  mean, he’s a young quarterback, that’s going to happen.  He’s not going to be on top of his game every game week in and week out, because this game is a very fast moving game and he makes some decisions sometimes — he’s like a gambler man, he takes chances and sometimes those things, he gets bit in the butt by that.

“But, he’s a good player who’s still learning how to play in the National Football League and I think the media has given him too much credit for doing nothing.  He hasn’t done anything really in the National Football League to deserve all the recognition and visibility that he’s gotten so far.”

Our position has been that Romo has done well, but that he has been unwilling or unable to maximize his potential.  As a result, Romo currently has his head pressed against a ceiling.

And he seems to be OK with that.

Dorsett isn’t, and Romo needs to take to heart the words of the greats who came before him, he needs to dedicate every waking moment (especially during the season) to perfecting his craft, and he needs to realize that he will have decades to hone his golfing skills or just hang out with his hat on backwards and watch bullriding or bowling or whatever it is that he’s doing when he’s not studying film and working out and studying film and working out and studying film.  And working out.

It’s his choice.  But the odds of achieving success will be stacked against him until he makes the same commitment that men like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Matt Ryan already have made.

  1. I’d say it’s bit early to anoint matt ryans greatness he has look good past 2 weeks but very well could end up with just above average year.

  2. The fact that he sucks says all that needs to be said. Learning curve my ass.
Who wil be blamed this year? No T.O., No Jessica and soon no Wade Phillips.

  3. This is great advice from a hack writer who has more then likely never played a sport and a has been player who hasn’t been relative in the league since ’88 with Denver. In other words screw you and Dorsett. Thank you.

  4. Really Florio? Matt Ryan? You just completely contradicted yourself. he had a good rookie season and you put him with Brady and Peyton? And still have the balls to say Romo hasn’t done anything?
    Really?

  5. It would be fun to see Romo and Colt Brennan have a duel over Jessica “porkchop” Simpson. She looks like she could fill in at defensive tackle for anyone needing a big signing. I think Jessica could have better played the part of Ashley, the psycho chick in Entourage.

  6. alright Vox, go cut and paste comments from Dorsett that you don’t like, call him names and argue about it. Don’t forget to google and rip off facts to us, like his YPA and rating, stats that dont equate to him winning. The guy is a complete train wreck in big games and has never won a big game.
ill be waiting for your arguments after your mom has finished serving supper.
And florio, what’s with you putting matt ryan in the same sentence as brady and peyton?

  7. How true.
    coaltrains dikshunary defines “Romosexual” as
anyone who has been sucking his butt all this time; american idol of QB’s.
Yeah,im looking at you Dallas sportswriters.

  8. TONY ROMO is a HOMO!!! Choke artest!!! he can’t win in the playoffs and couldn’t win in the big open game in the big new house…Keep the interceptions comeing I love it!!! HTTR

  9. I didn’t realize that “superstar” was a football position.
“Our position has been that Romo has done well, but that he has been unwilling or unable to maximize his potential.”
Your position is that he’s unwilling to maximize his potential. Don’t kvetch on an issue that you’ve been very adamant about.
“And he seems to be OK with that.”
    See?
“he needs to dedicate every waking moment (especially during the season) to perfecting his craft”
You could follow that same advice, Florio.
“It’s his choice. But the odds of achieving success will be stacked against him until he makes the same commitment that men like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Matt Ryan already have made.”
Oh, so Matt Ryan’s a “superstar”? Wow Florio, you’ve lost all objectivity. At least you left Frankenberger, McNabb, Vick and Campbell off your list.

  10. Roethlisberger and Cutler did not shake hands after the game, they snubbed eachother.
Where is the Inside Scoop on that?
Get TMZNFL on this story, I want some juicy NFL Gossip. I want some more NFL Drama.

  11. “And florio, what’s with you putting matt ryan in the same sentence as brady and peyton? ”
    And not putting McNabb! hahaha
    No superstar for you, McNabb!

  12. How come there’s always a mention of Matt Ryan as a young QB stud in the same class as Brady and Peyton. Rarely does anyone mention Flacco? He’s won more playoff games and this year seems to stepping up even more

  13. Our position has been that Romo has done well, but that he has been unwilling or unable to maximize his potential. As a result, Romo currently has his head pressed against a ceiling.
And he seems to be OK with that.
    ————————–
How does working hard to correct flaws in the offseason and taking complete blame for the loss Sunday night make him “OK” with that?
He could say that he wants to improve every week, get better, and work hard to helping the football team and people would wonder why he didn’t say more.
Again. What is the fasination with talking about your dislike for Romo? If you think he sucks, and he doesn’t deserve all the attention, then stop writing/complaining/talking about him. He’s not making the media recognize him. He’s not asking for these so called “anointments.”
He’s going out on the field, and giving it his all. He could have 10 great games and he’d get killed on the 11th for having the kind of game he did Sunday night.

  14. Agreed.

In fact, I’ve been agreeing with that for a couple years.
Cutler is also in this category, not what have you done for me lately, but what have you done, period?

  15. It Aint Just Romo, Packer Fans have anointed Karen Rodgers the next HOF’er and she ain’t done jack sh!t either.

  16. Wow, who’d have thought Vox would take issue with this blurb. It just defies logic!
Its like anyone who criticizes Obama is labeled a racist, he labels anyone who criticizes anything Cowboys related as idiots. Truly all sense of free speech is leaving us (cue melodramatic music).

  17. Someone punched me in the face earlier today for mearly suggesting Romo was a superstar. Bit ironic to see a story this evening on the subject.

  18. Some of you people need to work on your reading comprehension. Saying “until he makes the same commitment that men like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Matt Ryan already have made” is talking about working far beyond just seriously at the craft of QB-ing, not merely making some list of elite QBs. This is a comment on their specific habits of professionalism going above & beyond.

  19. More ad revenue for Florio!
All you have to do is rip Dallas and the dollars just come roaring in. No real thought required. All the children whose 90’s were ruined by Emmitt Smith just pile on like lemmings as they recover from their deep-rooted emotional scarring.
Florio: do you even believe what you write or does the stink of Internet ad dollar signs just kind of put your brain on autopilot?
At least do something that vaguely resembles hard work: compare Romo to every other NFL team’s QB based on stats, wins and losses, and years playing and tell me he’s not, at the very least, in the top ten of all NFL QBs.
Where’s the endless articles trashing Trent Edwards, Jason Campbell, Matt Cassel, Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselback, Chad Pennington, Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman, Jake Delhomme, etc.
Oh that’s right, that wouldn’t generate money because nobody gives two $hits about those guys.
Dorsett’s opinion is simply that Romo is young and the media (hey, guess what! that’s you!) overhyped him. Your opinion from earlier this week (in order to generate debate and ad hits) is that he’ll never amount to anything.
    Not quite the same thing.
Your other argument that Romo doesn’t work hard enough is based on….what? Nothing, because you don’t even flesh out your half assed arguments. This post smells like it was written in twenty seconds on your Macbook Pro while refreshing Google News and sipping a martini.
You do much better at pretending to break stories about broken collarbones. If you’re going to trash Romo, at least bring out some vaguely concrete supporting arguments.
Maybe explore how all the other NFL QBs do when playing the team 99% of people have as the top superbowl favorite this year.
Romo is an undrafted QB, still early in his career, that’s out-performed more than 75% of the QBs in the league. Yeah, let’s crucify the guy because ESPN prematurely turned him into a god.

  20. QB A – Playoff QB Rating – 77.6
    QB B – Playoff QB Rating – 75.8
One is “clutch” and is widely considered one of the better QB’s in the league. The other is getting shat on for never showing up in big games. I guess if you play just as sucky in the playoffs as you do in the regular season, you aren’t choking?
What a crock. I’m a freaking Eagles fan and I know Romo is a better QB than all but a handful in the league. You people are nuts. Just cause other crappy QB’s play with better teams, it doesn’t mean they are better.

  21. “‘Well, for one thing, I don’t know why on God’s earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League,’ Dorsett said.”
For people who follow football because they know the game, he isn’t.
But otherwise, Tony, it’s like this: Anything Jerry does, or the Cowboys do, is cupped by the media and milked for all it’s worth. The same intellect that cares about Paris Hilton is going to idolize Gomer Romo.
The TMZ football fans like “lightningrod,” who drive the idiocracy, help make Romo a “superstar.”
Like most of the sports bobbleheads, I doubt seriously that people like “lightningrod” – “I want some juicy gossip!” – have ever thrown, caught, or kicked a football in an organized, competitive game.
If “lightningrod” is a woman, and that’s entirely possible, I withdraw the preceding message and apologize profusely. Madam.

  22. Vox says:
“Oh, so Matt Ryan’s a “superstar”? Wow Florio, you’ve lost all objectivity. At least you left Frankenberger, McNabb, Vick and Campbell off your list.”
    Hey Vox,
Only Campbell, from your list above, hasn’t won a playoff game…just like the Romosexual (thanks coaltrain )
I only wonder if the the Romosexual’s annual December swoon will be early this year.

  23. How in the world do you put Ryan in with Brady and Manning? That might be the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on here. Hell, even Manning and Brady weren’t considered superstars after 1 season + 2 games.
Hopefully you did it just to stir things up, because there is no way anyone that follows football would make such a strange statement.
And bottom line is Romo has accomplished more than Ryan already. I’m not saying Ryan won’t turn out to be great but come on. Why in the world would you pick Ryan in that statement rather than Bree’s, Big Ben, Rivers, Rodgers, Warner etc. Ryan is not even a top 10 qb at this point of his career.

  24. “How does working hard to correct flaws in the offseason and taking complete blame for the loss Sunday night make him “OK” with that?”
Romo plays competitive golf in the off-season, therefore Romo doesn’t care about football because a guy can only care a lot about one thing at once. Florio’s stated this position on more than one occasion. There is no room for anything else. That’s why he USED to be a crappy lawyer, and is now a severely biased sports blogger. Sounds like projection.

  25. Don’t out Ryan in there with the other two just yet. Put Warner there. After all, who won the playoff game between them last year? Who has the stats? Ryan ever had a perfect passer rating? No

  26. “Its like anyone who criticizes Obama is labeled a racist, he labels anyone who criticizes anything Cowboys related as idiots.”
That’s not true, you rascally rump ranger. I criticize idiots as idiots.
“Truly all sense of free speech is leaving us (cue melodramatic music).”
Or cue a Frankie Goes to Hollywood song, I’m sure you’d be comfy with either. You don’t even understand the concept of freedom of speech, do you? Idiot.

  27. It’s his choice. But the odds of achieving success will be stacked against him until he makes the same commitment that men like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Matt Ryan already have made.
    ————–
This is purely a speculative comment.
How the hell do you know whether or not he has or hasn’t spent the same amount of time studying then these guys? I’m not saying he has or hasn’t. What i am saying is that you have just as much proof saying he doesn’t as you do saying he does.
You don’t spend any time with any of these QB’s in the offseason.
You can’t tell us who spent more time training in the offseason anymore than you can tell me what i had for lunch today.

  28. I think that the grouping of Manning, Brady, and Matt Ryan is merely representative of contemporary QBs who do work hard to reach their full potential…and Tom Brady manages to stay focused while married to Gisele Bundchen…Tony Romo should take some notes on the “focused” part.

  29. Lawofmurphysays:
“Just cause other crappy QB’s play with better teams, it doesn’t mean they are better.”
Not many teams have the # of pro bowlers the Plowboys have…yet they still choke when it matters most, either by getting blown out their final two games last year (when one win gets them in the playoffs) or if the do get in…again a loss.
If it wasn’t for fleecing the Vikings with the Hershel trade, the playoff drought would be even longer.

  30. “Your other argument that Romo doesn’t work hard enough is based on….what? Nothing, because you don’t even flesh out your half assed arguments.”
Truer words have never been posted on this site. Florio’s too big to do any leg work, obviously.

  31. “Florio’s too big to do any leg work, obviously.”
Or maybe he’s unable or unwilling to improve his craft! haha

  32. jjared1101 says:
“You can’t tell us who spent more time training in the offseason anymore than you can tell me what i had for lunch today.”
    Jerry’s ASS?

  33. Everyone is hatin on Romo… He’s famous because he’s one of 32 starting QBs in the world. He has a football name. Steve Young, Tony Romo, Brett Favre. Not Bruce Gradkowski. He’s fun to watch, because he has fun playing.
Remember the snap over his head a year or 2 ago? He picked it up ran in circles made some pumpfakes, and picked up a first down. Backyard football. He is also a good guy. He does good things, isn’t cocky and hasn’t killed anyone. He doesn’t give the league a black eye for doing something dumb. Last week everyone was loving him w/o T.O.
One week later everyone hates him for throwing INTs. Ben Roethlisburger threw 23 INTs in his 3rd year.
Atleast he’s not as annoying as Jay Cutler. I live in Chicago, the city thought he won a superbowl before even playing. Cocky lil Vanderbilt kid.
Goodluck Tony Romo, and please don’t read these blogs.

  34. lightningrod:
Alright, man. I didn’t catch the sarcasm.
Maybe Bud Weiser’s dulled my wits. My bad.

  35. Hating football is a symptom of demon possession.
When was the last time you ever seen a demon possessed zombie watching Monday Night Football?
People that hate football should be rounded up and sent to concentration camps.

  36. “Only Campbell, from your list above, hasn’t won a playoff game”
It’s not my list, it’s a list that Florio created by exclusion. But so what? Are playoff wins the magical line of demarcation between superstars and slappies? MATT RYAN HASN’T WON A PLAYOFF GAME, EITHER. Florio left those guys off his list. Tony Dorsett agrees with Florio, those guys are not superstars with a great commitment to be the best QBs that they can be!

  37. Romo was hyped because he’s a frigging Cowboy, where in the NFL all-things Cowboy are unreasonably hyped. If he played for any team not in a major market no one would be talking up this expectations and hype crap. Sure, he could work harder and play better. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t (I doubt he’ll ever be a superstar other than the typical Cowboy-generated adulation). Either way, he didn’t create the hype.

  38. Playing starting QB for the Dallas Cowgirls makes anyone a superstar.
Just the way things go in Jerry’s world.

  39. OK, morons, time for another lesson. Florio didn’t say Matt Ryan was a superstar or that he was the next Brady/Manning. He said he displayed a commitment (for offseason work, film study, etc. LIKE them) that so far Romo has not (playing with beach babes the week of playoffs). Look it up.
Mike, you really need to institute a basic reading comprehension exam for your posters, new and old. Jeebus, they’re getting dumber every day!

  40. I think Tony D. is right on target with respect to TR. Romo has a lot of potential but it hasn’t been fully realized. The media jumped on his bandwagon and Romo has yet to deliver in the big game. The game vs the Giants is indicative of his performances in previous big games. The Cowboys need to try and dial back the Romo expectations, force him to dedicate himself to his craft….and draft a young quarterback to groom for the future.

  41. I don’t like Tony Dorsett and I don’t like Tony Romo. Dorsett should go back to something he knows, Basket Weaving. Isn’t that what he majored in, in college? Romo definitely doesn’t deserve stardom because he has no wins to back anything up. I think he is a mediocre QB just like Eli Manning. Shows up one week, hibernates the next. I’m not a huge fan of Romo but it could be worse in Dallas, could have Derek Anderson or someone like that.

  42. Romo is learning to play QB and Dorsett is correct — he was “anointed” too early. What isn’t too early to be stated is that Florio is a tool. Redskins, SB? Really?

  43. DookiesDeposit – Really? So given the chance you would rather eat cheeto’s and watch porn than hook up with Jessica? Gimme a break. There’s not a guy on this page that wouldn’t give up a body part to tag what Romo’s left behind.

  44. This is just crazy. We’re talking about a guy that has already shattered some Cowboys team passing records after only 41 starts. It would be one thing if we were talking about the Eagirls or the Saints or Lions but we’re talking about the freaking Dallas Cowboys and they have had some of the best QBs in NFL history. Staubach, Aikman, Meredith, even Danny White was better than a lot of teams have had since the merger.
17 career 300 yard passing games. Second place is Aikman with 13.
36 passing TDs in a season. Second is Danny White with 29.
4,211 passing yards in a season. No other Cowboys QB has ever thrown for 4,000 yards.
94.2 career passer rating. Second is Danny White’s 81.7.
    TD/INT ratio – Romo throws 1.73 TDs for every interception. Aikman = 1.17, Staubach = 1.40.
TDs/game. Romo averages over 2 TDs per game started. Second best is Meredith’s 1.58 TDs per game.
Yards per attempt – Romo 8.10. Nobody else exceeds 8.
5 TD passes in one game equals the best that Aikman ever did and the most in any game in Cowboys history.

  45. Coaltrain – -Obviously you don’t read the Dallas Newspapers. They, along with many others who have never played a down of sports, are quite willing to rip Romo. The apologists are typically Wade and Jerry.

  47. Here is why Romo is over-rated. Its not that he hasn’t won a playoff game. Its that at least twice he is the reason his team did not win (muffed hold, interception against Giants).

  48. “and Tom Brady manages to stay focused while married to Gisele Bundchen…Tony Romo should take some notes on the “focused” part.”
Like skinny boys should be able to distract ANY NFL QB. I’ll remember Brady’s focus next time he’s throwing off his back foot and bouncing that other foot that’s attached to the surgically reconstructed knee around like he’s got it on some hot coals.

  49. “If it wasn’t for fleecing the Vikings with the Hershel trade, the playoff drought would be even longer.”
And if your mom had balls she’d be your brother. That’s a West Virginia joke, by the way.

First off. How exactly do you become overrated when you went undrafted?
Second. If you watched the playoff game vs the Giants, many , if you were to chose one person, would pick Patrick Crayton for losing the game. Romo threw his lone interception on a 4th and long in the closing seconds.
    Chandler Bing says:
    Jerry’s ASS?
No, but i pounded your mother’s last night.

  51. “Here is why Romo is over-rated. Its not that he hasn’t won a playoff game. Its that at least twice he is the reason his team did not win (muffed hold, interception against Giants).”
Uhh Romo’s the guy that got them into FG position in the first place.. and you’re going to rag on a guy for throwing a last-second INT on 4th and 11, down four points? Do I get to pick two plays to show how any other QB in NFL history is overrated?

  52. Tony OhNo is overated. His station , abilities are on par with other notable players who are erratic, clumsy and show just a bit of potential. Think Donovan McBlack, Ryan Leaf, that redheaded doper the Raiders drafted years ago, et al. These guys are not capable of playing at an NFL level. Nice try but thier efforts do not feed the bulldog. No doubt that these types of players have been the victim of the NFLs “potential” marketing scam that we are subjected to each week. Perhaps Goodell should suspend himself and other top NFL brass for providing us with crap for players and slinging the monkey poop on the good NFL name.

  53. Florio was putting Matt Ryan with Brady and Peyton Manning because of how hard he dedicates himself to perfecting his craft not putting him in their elite level. However he left out Chad Pennington and of course Eli Manning who work their asses off in the film room as well.

  54. Vox-
As a football fan, you should know that stats lie. They are for baseball. Kevin Kolb threw for 391 yards this past Sunday in his first start. A very nice total. Did he have a great game? No…he was ok.
As a Cowboy fan, you should be embarrassed even mentioning Romo in the same sentence as Staubach or Aikman. They did what it took to WIN. Romo NEVER has, to this point.

  55. One thing about Romo you can’t say about Dorsett all of Romo’s women had money. He will never have to file bankruptcy, as Dorsett did. Dorsett Great football player, stupid human being.

  56. While we’re on the subject, could anybody let me in on what Adrian Peterson has done to deserve “superstar” status? He’s never scored more than 12 TDs in a season, never rushed for more than 1760 yards, can’t even do a good impression of a threat in the passing game, and is virtually guaranteed to put the ball on the ground at least 6 times a season. Never won a playoff game, either. Look at his numbers from the last four games of the season in ’07 and ’08.
    8 games
    147 carries
    593 yards
    4.03 yards per carry
    3 TDs
    3 fumbles
Now I’m not saying that AP sucks… in fact of all the RBs that I’ve heard will surpass Emmitt, from Bettis to Martin to James to Bush to Davis to Holmes and everybody in between, I think AP has the best shot. But he’s not. there. yet. He may be the best RB in the league at this point in time but it’s really not saying much when you consider the names and accomplishments that have come before him.
But if I were to, in my totally subjective method, translate AP’s late season numbers to a QB’s performance level I’d have to say that he’s definitely somewhere between a Tarvaris Jackson and a Joey Harrington when it comes to the all-important late season games. I’m sure that he’ll reverse that this season though, now that the Vikings have the great and powerful BertFarve (who has been performing like something between a Koy Detmer and a Todd Marijuanavich late in recent seasons). That’s sarcasm for you humanoids that aren’t quick enough to catch it.

  57. Bill Parcells told everyone when Romo had some early success that they should not go and annoint this guy as the second coming and he was correct. Dallas ranks up there with Oakland as one of the worst managed franchises Jerry Jones is Al Davis with a face lift

    And Tony Romo?
    Yeah… that’s what I thought.
Enjoy reading about your American idol QB in the National Enquirer Cowboy fans.

  59. scrapdawg12 Eli Manning is mediocre? The only QB’s to take their teams to the playoffs the past 4 years are Eli and Peyton Manning. Eli has won a superbowl MVP trophy and already led 20 4th quarter/ot game winning drives. He has been criticized for not being able to win without Tiki, Shockey, and Burress yet continues to win.

  60. Finally someone said it.Romo is a pud and the cowboys from the dumbass owner(Nice screen) on down make me want to barf they get entirely yo much air time

  61. Pennington, Hasselbeck, Grossman and Delhomme have all won at least one playoff game and three of those four have gone to a Super Bowl.

Exactly. And if you ask GM’s to pick between Pennington, Hasselbeck, Grossman, Delhomme, or Romo, they’d probably all pick Romo. Winning playoff games tell the story of a qb but not the whole story.
Drew Brees is 1-2 in the playoffs. Was 0-1 after his first 4 season as a starter. Had the best back in the league for those first 4 seasons too. Anyone want to tell me that Drew Brees sucks too?

  62. “They are for baseball. Kevin Kolb threw for 391 yards this past Sunday in his first start. A very nice total. Did he have a great game? No…he was ok.”

“As a Cowboy fan, you should be embarrassed even mentioning Romo in the same sentence as Staubach or Aikman. They did what it took to WIN. Romo NEVER has, to this point.”
On the contrary, his winning percentage is one of the best in NFL history. It’s not by accident. Have you lost your mind? Next time you even dream that Kolb deserves to be compared to Romo you need to wake the F up, dunk your head in a bucket of ice and apologize. That’s your “QB of the future”, Eagirls fan. And you think he’s “ok”? Of course he had a lot of yards, because Andy completely abandoned the running game again! 52 pass attempts, 21 rush attempts including THREE gadget plays that ended up with a freaking WR running the ball! Kolb sucks siht on a stick and he was drafted 36th overall!

Exactly. And if you ask GM’s to pick between Pennington, Hasselbeck, Grossman, Delhomme, or Romo, they’d probably all pick Romo. Winning playoff games tell the story of a qb but not the whole story.
    —————————————————-
And if you asked those same G.M.s to pick between going to the Super Bowl or having a QB who dates Jessica Simpson what choice would they make then?

  64. Vox there is no racism in these statements. Donavan is part of the NFL’s promote blacks at all costs program. Think about the fact that the NFL is 73% Black. Where are the voices for the other races?????????? DMcBlack has been on the race train all of his career. His behavoir and numbers prove that he is at best mediocre but recieves attention as if he is competent, a winner and a professional. Pack sand.

  65. “Dallas ranks up there with Oakland as one of the worst managed franchises”
Fanboi alert. Not only are the Cowboys the most valuable team in United States professional sports history, they’ve been one of the most successful teams during Jones’ tenure. Only one other team has won as many Super Bowls in that period of time, and that team got busted cheating. The Cowboys are currently riding a four season winning streak. Only two other teams can make that claim, but both have been busted for cheating.

  66. rebeljon.
    please don’t sound so ignorant.
you’ll never get money chasing girls. you’ll get girls chasing money.
yeah romo got paid his money… for now. better believe he’ll get that nice “eli manning” money should he win a superbowl.
i’m a diehard cowboy fan, and i would love nothing more than to see either romo get his s#!t together and start being disciplined, or for jerry jones to bring in a bill cowher or mike shannahan to whip his ass in to shape.

  67. “Pennington, Hasselbeck, Grossman and Delhomme have all won at least one playoff game and three of those four have gone to a Super Bowl.
    And Tony Romo?
    Yeah… that’s what I thought.”
What about Palmer, Cassel, Campbell, Edwards, and Cutler?
Yeah… that’s what *I* thought. I’m starting to think that the bias against Romo is race-related. Black and Hispanic QBs take a lot of heat on PFT while white guys like Cutler et al pretty much get a pass.

  68. Let’s see… NY Giants, first or second in everyone’s preseason NFC ratings, Manning has great game, Romo has one his worst, Giants won in a cakewalk, right?

  69. Vox- Think Doug Williams fo the Redskins. We never here about him, his efforts, accomplishments, etc. But we do hear ad nausem about DM. If had said some remark about ligature would that be racist or a more appropriate comment on McNabbs Super Bowl efforts?

  70. I have to question the credibility of Tony Corsett; but then again, he too never maximized his ability so maybe he does have something to say on Romo…

  71. “Enjoy reading about your American idol QB in the National Enquirer Cowboy fans.”
See that’s one of the things about Cowboys QBs. You can read about them everywhere from Hustler to the Saturday Evening Post.

  72. @ beezer scrapdawg12 Eli Manning is mediocre? The only QB’s to take their teams to the playoffs the past 4 years are Eli and Peyton Manning. Eli has won a superbowl MVP trophy and already led 20 4th quarter/ot game winning drives. He has been criticized for not being able to win without Tiki, Shockey, and Burress yet continues to win
You are wrong there on Eli having 20 4th quarter comebacks they were talking about that Sun. He’s had 12 The guy you are talking about that has 20 would be my man Ben Roethlisberger, But Eli done a hell of a job Sunday in that game.

  73. If Romo is not a star then Aaron Rodgers should not be anointed as a top 5 qb as Chris Collingsworth stated. He is 7 and 11 as a starter.

  74. Leviathan says: September 22, 2009 8:16 PM
“Where’s the endless articles trashing Trent Edwards, Jason Campbell, Matt Cassel, Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselback, Chad Pennington, Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman, Jake Delhomme, etc.”
How many of those QBs had a bye week to prepare, first playoff game at home, played with ELEVEN Pro Bowlers on his team – including himself, and still lost the game?

  75. “It Aint Just Romo, Packer Fans have anointed Karen Rodgers the next HOF’er and she ain’t done jack sh!t either. ”
Who gave this goon access to the computer?

  76. The problem in Dallas is like the problem in Oakland. Jerry Jones is their Al Davis.
He brought in crybaby Owens and Pacman Jones.
He puts his injfluence above the coaches. He’s destroyed what was looking like a sure-fire Super Bowl contender.
He settled for Marion Barber as his starting running back.
He’s alienating himself from the rest of the league, just like brother AL when it comes to his protesting of revenue sharing.

  77. “If I was hooking up with the chicks romo is I would not be studying film either” – Amen brother..
What is with all the Romo/Cowboys hate from this site lately? I mean I know its nothing new, but its really noticeable lately…

  78. Philtration says:
And if you asked those same G.M.s to pick between going to the Super Bowl or having a QB who dates Jessica Simpson what choice would they make then?
    —————————
    That makes no sense.
    You truly are retarded.

  79. I seem to recall that Adrian Peterson, Matt Ryan and Tony Romo have all won the exact same number of playoff games. So I don’t really see what makes Ryan or Peterson a “superstar” and Romo a huge bust. They are all young players with a limited level of team success.

  80. bunbun says:
“Think Donovan McBlack, Ryan Leaf, that redheaded doper the Raiders drafted years ago, et al. These guys are not capable of playing at an NFL level.”
Wow, with that statement you are a lock for biggest asshole trophy, you can put it next to your KKK hood in the main room of your trailer.

  81. For the record, Romo is 29 years old.
Physically, dude has it goin on, no doubt about it. But it’s just as clear that he guy doesn’t have it between the ears.

  82. “Pennington, Hasselbeck, Grossman and Delhomme have all won at least one playoff game and three of those four have gone to a Super Bowl.
    And Tony Romo?
    Yeah… that’s what I thought.”
Yeah, that couldn’t have ANYTHING to do with Dallas’s pass defense sucking for much of the last decade, could it? Dallas’s DEFENSE couldn’t have anything to do with any of this, huh?
The kid’s been in the NFL for 2.5 years, playing in the toughest division in the NFL on one of the most criticized teams in sports. It’s not Tony Romo’s fault that ESPN anointed him a god prematurely.
Still, he is a top ten NFL QB that’s breaking Dallas QB records left and right and wins far more games for Dallas than he loses.
Those of you arguing he’s some kind of automatic, undisciplined failure are full of epic levels of crap. Pretty clearly still working through your 90’s Dallas Cowboys Angst.
    Perhaps additional hobbies would help?

  83. Vox, you’re going to be busy today – lol.
p.s – ‘Frankenberger’ is two years younger than Romo. The only reason Romo is a ‘young QB’ is because it took him three years to pass Drew Henson, Quincy Carter and Vinny Testaverde on the depth chart.
Do you actually think Romo is a better QB than Aikman and Staubach because he has better stats? I guess Tommy Maddox is the best Steeler QB of all time.

  84. I am just glad to see more controversy in big D. The ask for this and they get it.
See that Giants game Sunday night???? Win a big game before you anoint yourselves Super Bowl Champions again and again and again, you arrogant Cowboy fan frontrunning phoney-baloney-plastic-banana-good time rock’n’rollers

  85. Individual stats are great for getting individual recognition.
Hard to appreciate it though when the Team doesn’t win the big games.

  86. “Our position has been that Romo has done well, but that he has been unwilling or unable to maximize his potential. As a result, Romo currently has his head pressed against a ceiling.”
Oh, so THAT’S why his face looks like that.

  87. just a few things… Florio, please find another way to generate revenue on this site. Everytime you post one of these Cowboy stories, every idiot and their inbred parents come out of the woodwork to post something. You had 97 comments and probably had 3 that made any sense, but I guess when 35% of the posts come from an obvious mouthbreather like Vox Veritas, then I guess it is what it is. Anyone who doesn’t think our education system hasn’t gone to crap in America needn’t look any further than the commentors on this site.

    Fanboi alert.
    *******************************************
No offense, pal, but you have no room to be calling “fanboi alerts.” You swing from Cowboy nuts harder than most other homers do with their teams, and it’s pretty obvious (i.e., when you pop up in random threads that don’t even start about the Cowboys, but somehow bring them up, and then chime in the on conversation). Just sayin.

I have no thoughts about the Cowboys past one way or the other but I can see that “some” people do.
I do like how you defend Romo by bashing another part of the Cowboys team. Sounds like a fully ripened man crush and you are ready to book a night at the “All The Way Inn”
Enjoy your great big tay vay.

  92. Umm. not sure he was calling Ryan a superstar. I think he was stating that those 3 were dedicating thier time to be/become one. Ryan hasn’t proven himself…yet.

  93. I think Vox lives on this site. Or he thinks he’s a cowboy. I dunno, but one can get too out of whack. Get a gf or something.

  94. Quagmire-Again these statements are without any racist content. They do reflect a more realist view of the NFL, maketing, etc. than the typical politically correct, third grade, girl gossiping, ohh I am facinated with shiny objects (read fantasy football) BS that the fans are into these days. The NFL is put up the numbers, win, win, win. Anything less is not acceptable. For the money these guys receive we deserve better.Your statements about the KKK are ignorance and unneccesary at best.

  95. *** Only one other team has won as many Super Bowls in that period of time, and that team got busted cheating. ***
Yeah, too bad nutsack Jones fired the coach who won the first two immediately after he won them, out of jealousy, or he might have won a few more. What a freak.

  96. And how long is Romo going to be a “young quarterback???” Until he’s drawing a pension? The guy is 29.

  97. *** Dorsett should go back to something he knows, Basket Weaving. Isn’t that what he majored in, in college? ***
Actually I believe he majored in the Heisman, a national championship, and being a first-team All-American, three times.
He’s also the only guy on the history who has won the Super Bowl, college National Championship, the Heisman, and to be in both the pro and college halls of fame.
So you were babbling something about “something he knows?”

  98. dorsett can thank jerry jones for this fuss around romo.
no one in the league cares about romo. it is jerry jones & his star-studded production that is the publicity surrounding the cowboys that have lauded & praised romo constantly.
no fan or person outside of the cowboys cares about romo or has proclaimed him as anything other than a choke artist.

  99. Its funny you call out people for annoiting Romo when he hasnt really done anything in the NFL but in the same post you annoit Matt Ryan for doing basically the same thing. Nothing.

  100. what was everyone calling peyton before he won a superbowl? a choke artist. what about dan marino? yeah he won some playoff games but never the big one. somehow drent dilfer is better than some guys because he has a ring? i don’t think so. romo is a GOOD quarterback who has had some bad games just like everyone else. don’t jump all over a guy who clearly can play and start on more than half the other teams in the league.

funny, i don’t remember a cowboy shooting himself in the leg at a nightclub and i certainly don’t remember anyone from dallas saying they were superbowl favorites. do you always make up shit like this or is it a one-time deal?

  102. Jerry Jones needs to get rid of this clown..Hes not a finisher. That Denver outcome was horrible awful. He lacks confidence he cant get the job done. Stop just making anyone a Cowboy qb!!! If any of us performed on our jobs like this WE WOULD BE HISTORY!!!!!
    Jerry please stop the madness!!!!!

  103. Dallas is annointed super bowl favorites annually by the media that loves the hype. They continually dissappoint, often at the hands of their eastern illionois superstar. And I ain’t a giants fan, so you can talk about burress all you like. I am a redskins fan. Now That’s an Offense………………………………..or an offense………………………………..but you gotta admit the cowboys are the new york Yankees of the NFL-overhyped and often failing to live up.

  104. I’m not going to bother reading through this whole thread. I just want to know one thing.
Faced with the prospect of defending Tony Dorsett or Tony Romo to the death, did Vox’s head explode? If so, is there video of it?
