Nike says there's no agreement with Vick

On Wednesday, word emerged that Eagles quarterback Mike Vick has renewed acquaintances with Nike.

Mike Principe, whose agency represents Vick for marketing purposes, said that Vick has signed an endorsement deal with Nick.

Agent Joel Segal said that Vick is “excited to be part of the Nike team again,” but Segal said that Vick and Nike agreed not to discuss the details of the arrangement.

Nike apparently didn’t get the memo.

Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that a Nike spokesman says the company has no agreement with Vick.  Instead, Nike is simply giving Vick free product.

“Nike does not have a contractual relationship with Michael Vick,” Nike
spokesman Kejuan Wilkins told Rovell in a statement. “We have agreed to
supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are
not under contract with Nike.”

Says Rovell on his Twitter page, “I knew this was all bogus.”

The purpose of the ruse is obvious.  Principe and Segal, buoyed by the lack of criticism and/or outcry regarding Vick as he embarks on the second phase of his career, opted to take a liberty with reality, presumably in the hopes that the vague suggestion that Nike has re-embraced Vick might prompt other potential endorsers to follow suit.

But they didn’t count on the negative reaction to the impression that Nike was paying Vick in an economic environment where shoe deals have become scarce.  And so Nike, which might have initially agreed to stay silent in response to whatever Vick’s camp said about the situation, needed to set the record straight.

Bottom line?  Vick’s camp needs to continue to urge Mike to remain humble.  The apparent fact that his arrangement with Nike was deliberately distorted by those around him makes us wonder how hard he’s pressing them behind the scenes to shake the trees that previously dropped cash-filled apples onto his feet.

  1. Thank goodness….for a while there I thought half the PFT readers were never going to buy Nike’s again. How dare Nike sign a dog-killer! But paying an 8 year old Indonesian kid .10/hr. to assemble shoes is okay. Makes sense.

  2. Here’s where Vick needs to lay down the law to all of his peeps. He should tell everybody to shut the bleep up and just let him play. He’s in a good place and things have calmed way down. This kind of crap needs to be put to rest.

  3. So you’re telling me that the Vick camp is engaging in the same distortions and outright lies that it did prior to this sadistic monster going to prison?
    I_am_shocked.

  4. hahaha big story of how Mike Vick’s getting rich off of Nike, we find out that he got a pair of shoes hahahaha what a joke!

  5. Good…. So now all you douche-bags can wear your Nikes again if it isn’t too “hood” to wear… You people are serious douches. Get a life. Live yours. MV is living his

  6. Hmmm, sounds like what I said in the other posts’ comments.
So all of you “I will never wear Nike again” people care to retract your statements?

  7. Mmmmm, cash-filled apples, glahmf
“it’s just a little dirty, its still good its still good ::boom:: its just a little air-born, its still good its still good”

  8. Well, this story makes more sense than the previous report that he had a Nike shoe deal.
Vick should get a new agency to represent him for marketing purposes. He obviously can’t rely on the one he currently has. They are liars.

  9. What great PR for Nike…vick can wear their product while doing community service and to speaking engagements where he outlines the horrible things that he has done, but that others should avoid. I think he should only be allowed to wear the Seahawks jerseys from Sundays game….now there is a punishment.

  10. When I heard this on the “four letter network” I was like hmmmm…Considering Nike just pulled off the board of Commerce for their failure to recognize climate change it didn’t make sense. Why would Nike make a socially conscience stand on that yet follow a shiny object like Vick?….NOT politically smart for a company that needs moms to buy their kids $100 Nikes.

  11. What, they twisted the facts of an event to bolster their cause, something you do everyday.

  12. Any surprise that the news from Vick’s camp of an “agreement” broke the same day as news that the agreed to pay back the over $400K he stole from the pension fund? He had to make that “go away” if possible by covering it with something good.

  13. Last time i checked getting free merchandise from Nike somewhat constitutes an endorsement by Nike.
Does Nike give out free merchandise to everyone? Nope.

  14. Hey losers who support Vick and write like children:
    HAHAHAHAAHA
    ROTFLMAO

  15. I’m not a Vick fan, because I’ve always felt he wasn’t that good a QB, so I’m not taking his side on this or anything, I just don’t feel he is definately ” pressing them behind the scenes to shake the trees”.
It could be pressure from him but I don’t think we can just overlook an agent and the guy who represents Vick for marketing purposes for coming up with this without any pressure on them from Vick.
However regardless of who is the cause of this, this tactic of telling an outright lie was not a smart move for Mike Principe It would only have worked if Nike didn’t talk about the reality at all and Principe had to know being the first company to endorse Vick after his prison term would draw questions from the media that Nike would have to answer. A good spin doctor would have created the illusion of a deal without actually saying Vick had a deal in place.
Now Principe looks like the guy who brags about sleeping with a hot chick until the rumors get back to her and she tells everyone it never really happened.

  16. You really think that Vick was behind this? You have to be kidding me. He has the intelligence of a retarded parrot. That Vick is smart enough to look at the gifts from Nike and say hey, if i make it look like they are paying me then maybe others will want to pay me is absurd. No way is he smart enough to think up a scheme like that. Although the fact that it was a complete failure does give it the scent of Vick.

  17. Don’t matter. Not even this overrated dog killer can help the hapless Eagles win their first Super Bowl championship. Never happen. Ha!

  18. Bah, why speculate that Vick was behind this? His marketing representatives, who likely get paid a portion of whatever he earns through endorsements, obviously decided that “fudging” the facts about a typical, free giveaway of goods to a Pro athlete might lead to some real marketing deals, so they fell all over themselves to drop Nike’s name to hopefully fuel some more interest, and earn themselves some cash in the process.
Lets be honest here; people in marketing LIE for a living, and try to sell us fiction as fact. I’m 99.9% certain that the blame for this episode lies with the marketing weenies.

  19. It is always amazing to me how when a story goes left the media never takes a look in the mirror and instead ALWAYS blames it on someone else. This is how this very site characterized Segal’s remarks yesterday.

Segal wouldn’t discuss the terms, per the agreement between Vick and the shoe company. Vick will wear Nike shoes and apparel. (Perhaps that’s all it amounts to.)

But now a day later because media outlets turned the story into “OMG Vick is getting paid a gazillion dollars by Nike and we are in a recession!!!” which was totally NOT what Segal said, the story turns into Segal and Principe trying to perpetrate a fraud in order to get other endorsements. Seriously. How about calling out all of the members of the media whose wild speculation blew the story up in the first place?
Oh wait, I forgot, media folks are like vampires, they don’t see their own reflection in a mirror.

  20. “But paying an 8 year old Indonesian kid .10/hr. to assemble shoes is okay.”
No that’s actually terrible. However if it keeps the kid from otherwise starving, then good.

  21. “Last time i checked getting free merchandise from Nike somewhat constitutes an endorsement by Nike.”
No… it constitutes a sponsorship by Nike.

  22. Way yo go Mike Vick , make that money. I know how hard it is for you to live without blings, and an entourage of ass-kissers, just keep your head up and pay your bills son.

The true joke is how much money shin guard makers would make if they started marketing their product to DE’s who line up against Flozell “Leg Whip” Adams.

  24. Who is Michael’s camp? He dont need to listen to nobody. He is Mike Vick…… I am sure he has not learned his lesson. I just hope next time he doesn’t hurt a human being.

Now that’s funny. “League tested, and Doctor approved! The only shin guards guaranteed to protect you from Flo’s Rockette-style kicking! Stops cheaters cold!

  26. “The true joke is how much money shin guard makers would make if they started marketing their product to DE’s who line up against Flozell “Leg Whip” Adams.”
That might be a good investment for them, but I doubt it will help them on the other 50 plays when he’s wearing them out and burying them 5 yards downfield.

Only joke is your flozzel, the most penalized o-lineman in the league and captain of ESPN’s “all flag team” thus far. Im sure he would take free anything at this point…gotta do something to offset a 25 thousand dollar penalty tab.

  28. The good news is that the word should be out.
ANY company the uses dog killers, wife beaters, serial drug users, and people who see murders and pretend that they didn’t see anything, to represent them, should pay the consequences for their decisions. We can purchase the competition!!!
    It’s not just mike vick.

  29. Mike Vick’s people are liars? Who would have thought such a thing possible?
    ————–
Does anyone really expect anything less?
Can’t wait for someone to hand him a free drink and he’ll claim a Grey Goose sponsorship.
Playing like crap on the field, his people distort everything he does. Guy cannot catch a break, but it is enjoyable to watch.

  30. Some of yall are some of the biggest haters ever. Some of yall need to get off of Vick’s nuts. The man gotta make a living just like everybody else. Yall act like yall aint never broke the law before

  31. So his handlers are as crooked as he is? Vick has true character flaws and is a proven liar and now we even hear theif. Seems like daily more bad news regarding him.

  32. why this guy would be getting any endorsement deals at this point (or free footwear) is beyond me.
there are backups on other teams that are more dynamic now.

  33. Well, I can’t seem to find any pairs of Bad Newz Bobos anywhere, could it be Nike is picking up design ideas for athletic kennelwear?

  34. “Some of yall are some of the biggest haters ever. Some of yall need to get off of Vick’s nuts. The man gotta make a living just like everybody else. Yall act like yall aint never broke the law before.”
    ^^^^^^^^^^
    Broke the law? Eh, perhaps.
Immersed myself in a lifestyle of gambling, torture, drowning dogs, slamming repeatedly into the ground to their death, hammering dogs teeth out and otherwise causing immeasurable pain, be it to dog or human? No, not so much.
In case you didn’t know, the unemployment rate is hovering around 10%. “The man” can get in line behind everyone else who’s unemployed, or go make a living digging ditches. He doesn’t *deserve* ANYTHING.
    Get a clue.

  35. Nike got reaction.
That’s why there’s no deal. Today.
Hell, I called them. I’ll bet thousands of others did, too.

  36. It is rather amusing that people who write in to support Vick almost always make spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. Man, that’s funny.
Average Vick supporter IQ: 65 — same as Vick. How poetic.
Meanwhile, a few items Vick might potentially endorse:
    1. “BendRover” (dog rape stands and apparatus),
    2. “Hangdogs” (dog hanging chains and poles),
    3. “Electrodoggy” (for EZ electrocution of underperformers, complete with cables and electrodes)

  37. Question for Vick to consider:
Which brand of shoe is it easier to wash dog blood out of:
    Reebok or Nike?
Nike should start a whole new line for Vick, the “Die-K-9”.

  38. This is the truth behind the “things have quieted down” illusion.
Things haven’t “quieted down” at all. All the same people who have been and still are disgusted with sadistic dog torturer Vick are just waiting for things like this to come up–then the flames rise up again, hands get singed and withdraw quickly from the scumbag Vick.
You people who think he’s off the hook–far from it. Vick’s not getting a free lunch, ever again. He’s been safely cut off from the world in his PR-padded embrace by Andy Reid and Roger No-Good-ell, but the people who’ve seen through it from the start aren’t buying it.
The guy’s a past-his-prime joke. Everything he used to do can now be done by younger, healthier guys without despicable criminal records. The clock’s ticking down on him.

  39. Apples and oranges My Vick In A Box. It comical to hear you try to compare a potentially lucrative deal Nike made with a scumbag convicted criminal who was just released from prison, to the hourly wage in a foreign country.

  40. Hey, redsquare.
Sitting on your fat ass and making snide comments isn’t “keeping someone on the hook”
It’s being lazy and sanctimonious. You hate Vick? Organize a protest. But you won’t, because you care JUST ENOUGH to make whiny little comments online, but not enough to do anything substantial.

  41. Nike received so much feedback that was not in their favor. They feared being boycotted as well.
They are complete liars when they say they are not supporting Vick.
I dont believe them. And their products are boycotted.

  42. Mike Principe, whose agency represents Vick for marketing purposes, said that Vick has signed an endorsement deal with Nick.
    Who is “Nick”?

  43. I’m a New Balance and Sketcher’s kind of a guy, anyway…..never could find a pair of Nikes that were comfortable.

  44. Average Vick supporter IQ: 65 — same as Vick.
You’re far more generous to them than I would be.

  45. I am thrilled NIKE announced this as quickly as they did. For those of you that think Vick did his time, I have this to say. He is a thug and a felon. Most “felons” are unable to find a decent job and even housimg. This monster has the luxury of getting his career back with the Eagles putting aside what Vick did, but if NIKE were to endorse him and give him millions, I would be in utter shock. The guy is a cruel creature and NIKE should never want their name associated with him.

  46. Hey @Ocelot138, the only one sitting on their fat ass and making snide comments here is you. (Well, obviously not, but between you and me it is.) I’ve been contacting Eagles corporate sponsors, boycotting their products, getting people I know in on it, donating my time and money to animal-rights organizations (PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, local no-kill animal shelter)…
…what have you been doing lately besides your little message, jerk? My guess is squat. Oh, and I’m not fat either, you sanctimonious *and* presumptuous ass. Looks like you’re 0-1 here today. Working on your next miss yet?

  47. “agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike.”
    ———————————————————
Nike is sponsoring him, just doing so without a contract. It is to “test the water.”
Not hard to read what they said.

  48. I actually sent Nike a nastygram email last night after I heard the original repurt that he had a deal and here’s the response I got:
Response to your email: (Jeff) – 10/01/2009 09:31 AM
Thank you for your email. Nike does not have a contractual relationship with Michael Vick. We have agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike.
Thank you again for your feedback.
    Sincerely,
    Nike

  49. i sent about ten emails to various depts of nike; all came back with the same format letter response, alll signed by “jeff” — nike obviously was not ready for the huge public outrage over its relationship with michael vick, convicted animal killer; nike erroneously assumed the passage of time caused the public to forget, forgive, and move on; how wrong nike is; by its relationship with michael vick, nike condones his actions in the torture and killing of defenseless animals; whether vick paid his price to society or not, he still should not have his life returned to him as if nothing happened, no harm/no foul

  50. I am glad to hear that Nike rumor is false!!! I always admired Nike for their professionalism, if they ask SICK VICK for sponsorship they are truly asking for alot of bad controversy. I think a big drop in sales too. I dont think Nike would stoop to his low level.
Nike represents being the best you can be, man or woman, black or white, etc. SICK VICK does not even come close to their standards. Nike, please keep it that way. Stay professional, he is the total opposite.
    PEACE!!

  51. nike states it doesn’t have a “contractual relationship” with michael vick;
however, nike, by having michael vick wear the company’s logo clothes, obviously has some type of relationship with michael vick; they can call it whatever they want; hey nike: don’t pee on my shoes and tell me it’s raining !!

  52. If Michael Vick were a different race, the idiots who are supporting his heinous, unforgiveable, cruel behavior would be singing a different tune. These people think that because he is African-American that what he did is acceptable. Vick should spend the rest of his life cleaning up animal excrement with his bare hands without pay. He is the lowest form of human there is. Not only do I hate what he did to those thousands of animals, I hate him too. If Nike even considers signing him on, my friends and I will boycott Nike products for the rest of our lives. He should not be playing football or be on t.v. Oh yeah, it’s on BET and as long as you’re African-American, they don’t care if you’ve committed inhumane acts of torture. Vick is a dick. A tiny limp one with big gonorrhea sores all over it. Die bitch.
