FOX apologizes for jabs at Jessica Simpson

On the most recent edition of FOX NFL Sunday, a cartoon was aired mocking the ex-girlfriend of Tony Romo, Jessica Simpson, for gaining weight.

The segment, sponsored by Burger King (which knows a thing or two about causing weight gain), contained multiple jabs at Simpson.

Said a cartoon version of tight end Jason Witten in the segment, “Unlike Tony, at least Jessica comes up big when it counts!”

A cartoon version of coach Wade Phillips added, “Say Tony, is Jessica around? We could use a defensive tackle!”

According to Bill Nichols of the Dallas Morning News, FOX issued the following statement: “Burger King did not have any editorial input in the creation of the animation that ran last Sunday, and no one from Burger King Corp., approved it before it aired. . . . Upon reflection, our poor attempt at humor was insensitive, and we deeply apologize to anyone who might have been offended.”

Frankly, they should have apologized for the fact that it wasn’t funny.

Then again, if failed attempts at humor were grounds for a mea culpa, we’d be issuing one pretty much every day.

And now Jessica Simpson wants to know if the mea culpa is the name of the new hamburger at Burger King.
