Al Davis preaches patience with Russell, who doesn't appreciate boos

We don’t hear from Raiders owner Al Davis very often, which is a shame because his comments are usually sharper and more educational than people give him credit for.

Davis was at this week’s ownershio meetings, though, and he ran into Jarrett Bell of USA Today at a hotel elevator.  Asked how Davis was doing, the Raiders owner said, “My team’s not doing well,” Davis said, “so I’m not doing well.”

The topic quickly turned to JaMarcus Russell, and Davis’ message was patience.  He pointed to historical examples of quarterbacks struggling early in their career: Troy Aikman’s rookie year, John Elway’s rocky start, Terry Bradshaw’s benching, Doug Williams, Warren Moon, Kenny Stabler, and Jim Plunkett.

The point is well taken, but none of them ever completed fewer than 45 percent of their passes or had a quarterback rating under 50.  Davis is reportedly frustrated and embarrassed by all the criticism his team is taking, but he wants to stay the course with Russell.  For now.

“JaMarcus, he’s got to do better,” Davis said. “Forget the cast around
him.  He knows it.  But we’ve got to fight through it with him.”

Russell, meanwhile, is hoping Raider fans will be more understanding than they were in Oakland’s last home game, when they showered Russell with boos.  Good luck with that.

“By being fans, you wish they could be more supportive,” Russell
said.  “We’re already down in the dumps and that doesn’t make it any
better.  The best thing for that is just have them come together with
us.  Who knows?  I really don’t.

“It was crazy for me. I had never really been in that situation
before you just have to pull out of it.  A lot of people are fed up over
the course of a year but the only thing we can do this week is make
some plays and hopefully it will go the other way.”

Philadelphia’s defense makes it unlikely that things will go the other way this week.

Davis may have patience with Russell, but expecting it from the fans — and Russell’s teammates — is another matter.

  1. Russell really needs to stay away from the booing subject. There are only two ways to make them stop. Quit or play better. Telling them it’s not nice will only hurt you.
It also has to do with the team around you, and from all accounts, the Raiders just don’t care. A few guys do, but I’ve just heard it is a rough situation. BUT, back in the 80’s when the Browns were good, nobody ever booed them. It’s because those were lovable teams that never quit. They played their balls off every weekend. THAT, and winning earned the fans respect. So when the whole thing fell apart in 1990 and we went 3-13 after making the AFC title game three of the last four years, and the playoffs 5 years in a row…still no boos. You have to earn not getting booed.

  2. Russell has the worst mechanics i have ever seen in a QB and he is not willing to put more work into it and try to get better. You often hear that he is the last one to get into training facility and first one to leave. He is just a perfect diaster all around. I’m predcting a shutout against eagles!!!

  3. the whole league is replete with young QBs who have come in and done well lately… and others who havent.
they are all better than bustell.

  4. This is when you will know that Davis really wants to win:
When he hires a respectable GM and gives him the keys to the Franchise.

  5. it’s weird that the fans would boo him after all the great plays and progress he’s made in the last couple of seasons…
    …wait…

  6. We don’t hear from Raiders owner Al Davis very often, which is a shame because his comments are usually sharper and more educational than people give him credit for.
Yeah, 30 years ago he had a couple of lucky years. Very sharp.

  7. I dont think fans realize how much the pressure of the NFL can ruin a player. Booing your team and attacking your players is pretty much the worst thing you can do, expcecially when it comes to high profile players like quarterbacks and high draft picks.
I would recommend everyone read Stephan Fatis book 6 Seconds of Panic. He talks to a lot of players about what the pressures of fans and media can do to someones game and attitude.
Not to mention free agency… players want to play for teams with good fan support… booing is not going to help win any free agent looks.

  8. Alziemer Davis couldn’t spot talent if it sat on his rectal telescope….Russell is not an NFL caliber player, and will never be a leader at this level. McFadden is in the mold of Curtis Enis, and DHB might as well stand for “Doesn’t Have Balls”…Sorry Raider Nation, you have a long time of misery coming your way……

  9. There have been some cases of guys struggling early and having success later, but there have been lots of cases when you can say “this guy would be good in another team” like archie manning or steve young but this is not the case. He has not shown real progress…

  10. I’d like to think that I’ve supported offthemarcus enough by throwing my money away on home games. When I bought tickets for this game in the summer it cost a pretty penny, pocket change for Russell, but a pretty penny to me. So, I’m going to be the loudest one booing the first time he goes 3 and out. It’s just getting ridiculous. I thought about selling the tickets, but then I found my meds.

  11. This JaMarcus’ third year in the league, right?
His third year in the league, John Elway led the Broncos to an 11-5 record. After posting a 13-3 the previous season. Not a comparison.

  12. Hey Al,
Patience my ass! We are sick and tired of this crap that we endure week in, and week out.
    Season in, and season out..
    Just COMPETE baby!

  13. Davis is right. I’m glad to hear he is resolved to let JRuss sink or swim with no hook in sight. We as a franchise need to find out what we have before any moves are made.
How about expecting patience from the ADHD media?
They did not HAVE QB ratings when Plunkett/Bradshaw et al. performed, so back your argument with something other than balsa wood and I’ll discuss it with you.
Really Really sick of you and your stupid stats Florio. Look up what Mark Twain said about statistics.

  14. @gobrowns
There were boos galore for Mike White, Joe Bugel, Vince Evans, Hostetlor and the rest.
    And they deserved them.
    Your memory is without audio.

  15. Damn! Nothing worse than a whiny ass $100 MILLION QB. Unless it’s a whiny ass $100 MILLION Qb with a passer rating hovering below the Mendoza line @ 45 he he he
Faiders and their fans…. all a bunch of F’n Hog Farmers

  16. Al davis is easily the best owner in the NFL. He picks the biggest, fastest, strongest players in the draft…..oh wait! There is more to football than that! It’s called intelligence, which Big Gay Al doesn’t have!

  17. I believe “last guy in first guy out” referred to Vick, but even with a poor O-line and inexperienced wide receivers, Russell is inexcusably bad. If Davis wants to see him turn it around and save his career he needs to sit Russell behind a veteran and play him in certain scenarios. If Russell keeps trotting out there no matter what, he will certainly fail.

  18. preaching patience is fine when it’s 1 or 2 years but they’ve been bad this entire decade except for when they reach the super bowl. if you don’t start to criticize someone it doesn’t hold anyone in the organization accountable for their mistakes and to try and rectify the situation. being a raiders fan must truly suck. i don’t see a bright side for them for years

  19. I agree with JMClarkent. Al Davis has to look in the mirror and say, “I’AM TOO OLD TO DO THIS JOB”. Then hand it over to someone else who’s connected to the Raiders, but younger and more caught up with the NFL’s trends.

  20. I’m as big of a Raider fan as you’ll ever meet and I’ve backed Russell from day one. I advocated drafting him over Quinn(though I really wanted Calvin Johnson over both of them because I don’t trust drafting QB’s in the first round). Russell has shown me through his demeanor on the field and in interviews that he just doesn’t get it…nor does he seem to really give a damn. Bench him. I’d rather see Bruce Gradkowski go out there and struggle for the rest of the year while making a concentrated effort.

  21. I never thought I would agree with an eagle fan but i do. thats all you hear about the guy, last one in, first one out. you cant have that from any player let alone the “leader” of the team. Has nothing to do with talent around him, he’s just collecting a check.

  22. How could somebody hear this and take it seriously?
For Al Davis of all people to preach patience is laughable. Let’s see if Tom Cable gets this treatment (regardless if he is in jail or not).

  23. After watching literally seconds of film, I’ve concluded that Russell’s poor mechanics are the result of his being thrown off-balance by the hubcaps he wears in his earlobes.

  24. I would say he is similar to Vince Young but then VY did win the ROY award and made it to the playoffs before imploding. Russell didn’t even attain a single winning season before showing us all that he was done.

  25. @eaglesalldaway nailed it. It’s really not rocket-science. Russel was shotgun college QB who does not have the footwork to play at the pro level. Even if everything else around him is crap, it’s worrying that his mechanics have gotten worse as he’s played more games. That’s the stunning part that has this Raider fan ready to pull the plug on him.

  26. Russell was a media driven fantasy from day one who made a gazillion dollars off of one pitch and catch college football game. Everyone knew about his work ethic but with the SI / ESPN hype machine behind you there’s no way you can fail … right ……. ???

  27. total bust who should be given the grossman treatment by the media. you know the kind where he is blamed for all his teams problems as well as global warming and he wasn’t even a top 10 pick!

  28. I’ve givin you nothing but patience…
You’re grown men, nut up, shut up and play.
    Whaaa….life’s hard…coach yelled…
    Just step up baby!

  29. Good for Al. He is much more with it than people give him credit.
And it only makes sense to stick with a QB you’ve invested so much in, who has so much potential. But Al also knows that JaMarcus has to improve or it will be time for a serious QB competition.
Right on, Al. Ignore the ignorant fans who think a QB is supposed to be Pro Bowl caliber from Day 1, but be honest with yourself about the fact there does come a time for a change.

  30. Russell has the worst mechanics i have ever seen in a QB and he is not willing to put more work into it and try to get better. You often hear that he is the last one to get into training facility and first one to leave. He is just a perfect diaster all around. I’m predcting a shutout against eagles!!!

  31. Say what you want about Crazy Al, atleast he backs his qb. Snyder should learn something from this
Snyder doesnt have 1st pick money invested in Campbell, he is on a one year deal and is average at best and wasnt really great in college either, he was picked because he was a Joe Gibbs’ guy, now Gibbs’ is gone and Snyder doesnt want Campbell.

  32. The frustrating thing about Al Davis is this; he’s clearly not crazy or senile. He’s just so damn stubborn, and has so many yes men around him that he won’t change his ways in terms of drafting and free agent signings.
As for Russell, I’m willing to be patient with him, but I need to start seeing improvement soon. Regression is not acceptable, and that been happening so far this season after his strong end to last season.

  33. Don’t worry Al, once you get tucked in tite for your dirt nap, and somebody else takes over the team, and you can no longer make any of your stupid decisions, the team will improve rite away.. I personally could show up tommrow , and with in a few games start to become competitive within 3 games.. simply by changing the current stupid game plan which makes no sense at all what so ever..

  34. “Stay The Course”…the Team of the Decades’ new mantra. Al must have fed this line to Cable, he uses it after every loss.

  35. “Say what you want about Crazy Al, atleast he backs his qb. Snyder should learn something from this”
Well of course, it was his stupid idea to draft him. Turning his back on him now would just be an admission of being wr-wr-wr-wrong.

  36. I speak for all people, raiders fans, non raiders fans. Only JOHN MADDEN himself could save the raiders.

  37. Don’t feel bad Al, Alzheimer’s isn’t all bad.
Just think, you meet new people every day, there’s never a re-run on TV, and you get to hide your own Easter eggs!

  38. Davis is reportedly frustrated and embarrassed by all the criticism his team is taking, but he wants to stay the course with Russell. For now.
    _______
Davis should be embarrassed. not for the criticism his team is taking, but for the decisions he has made that has put the team in this situation. He made or caused to be made the poor draft decisions, including Russell & DHB (I feel bad for DHB, except for the money he has been paid, having so much expectation placed on him which was unwarranted giving his performance in college) plus numerous others over the years. For his meddling in Coaching decisions, play calling and starting lineup decisions as well as setting the “culture” or the organization.
Leaders are tasked with setting the culture of an organization, but Crazy Al, the Cryptkeeper or whatever you wish to call him, has developed a cutlure of failure over the past 15-20 years from which no Coach (Parcells, Cowher, or any other winning Coach could recover) with Crazy Al still involved in day to day decisions.
Russell is not the problem, DHB is not the problem, Cable is not the problem, Al Davis is THE PROBLEM. Until he goes away, via dirt nap, or otherwise, the Raiders problems will continue to exist.
And moronic Raiders fans like JSpicoli and a decreasing handful of other who persisit on blaming the Media, the players and others, for Raiders bashing, instead of placing blame where it belongs, directly on Old dumb Al,….oh never mind, they’ll still blame everyone but Al.

  39. The problem with the Raiders is what also has made them so unique and really a one-of-a-kind pro sports organization.
What is it? Supreme, borderline psychotic arrogance.
    — We’re going to play man-to-man defense and run the most basic schemes and the most vanilla offense and we’ll win because our players are so much more physically talented than yours.
    — We’ll take the head case, the nut job, the drunk — if they’re exceptionally talented — because we’ll get those guys to perform on Sunday.
    — We’ll draft players with freakish physical talent — JaMarcus’ arm, DHB’s speed, anyone who’s run a sub 4.3 ever — and make them great, despite their spotty record of production in actual games and glaring deficiencies in the less measurable areas of skill.
    — We’ll pick head coaches that no one has ever heard or would give a job because we’re so confident in our athleticism and ability to find diamond in the rough coaches that we don’t need to chase the proven, big-name leaders.
It’s this attitude that has contributed to the Raiders’ past success and current failures. Every personnel move is based on upside. If a guy has the physical tools to be great, get him in here and we’ll make him great. Even if that ignores the non-measurable skills that usually make players great on the NFL level (QB decision making; RB vision; Any player’s heart and work ethic).
Al Davis changed the game by recognizing how elite physical skills could dominate on the NFL level even if the player wasn’t a star at a big-time college. But the rest of the league has long caught up. Guys who don’t have the requisite physical ability for the NFL game don’t get drafted. But there comes a point where enough physical ability is good enough. You don’t need receivers to run 4.2s. Give me a guy who runs a 4.5 with great hands, ball skills, route running and toughness any day over a guy whose sole highlights are running a 4.2 in shorts and standing 6’3″ or taller but has never shown much football skill. Give me a guy who can throw the ball with reasonable velocity and makes brilliant split-second decisions over the guy who can throw it 80+ yards but is too slow to react.
But the Raider way is to gamble on the guy with a sky-high ceiling and subterranean floor over the guy who will be a surefire solid pro for a long time.
I still love them for it. It’s a fun, inspiring philosophy. But too many misses on personnel moves, too basic offensive/defensive systems, terrible QB play since Gannon and terrible coaches since Gruden are the reasons the Raiders are where they are.

  40. “By being fans, you wish they could be more supportive” is the most moronic thing this so-called QB could have said.
He obviously doesn’t notice the photos of the great hall of famers that line the walls of his work place as he strides down the aisles everyday.
He obviously doesn’t know about the heart and dedication and determination it takes to compete in the NFL day after day after day.
He obviously doesn’t know of all the sweat and blood and tears that were shed by the players before him so he could have the life of luxury he now enjoys.
But most of all, he obviously doesn’t understand the true meaning of being a Raider fan…and for that I will despise him forever.

  41. Yet even through all of this nonsence.
I’d still never pick ANY other team…
    Defiant and proud….
    The only NATION….GFY.

  42. “And moronic Raiders fans like JSpicoli and a decreasing handful of other who persisit on blaming the Media, the players and others, for Raiders bashing, instead of placing blame where it belongs, directly on Old dumb Al,….oh never mind, they’ll still blame everyone but Al.”
Who else would I blame for the treatment we get in the media? You are the one who needs schooling. According to your “statement” above, I should blame the bashing on Al. What kind of nonsensical, circular, self-defeating argument are you trying to make?
I’d post on it further but you are beyond hope. All I want is some fair treatment, and what I get is CNN’s treatment of Bush. We are not the worst off team in the NFL, by a longshot. You would never know this by listening to the media, or you. At the center of my comments/thoughts, which are mostly to point out that the the mediots, and their takes, do not hold water is this, WHY are they choosing the Raiders to hate? Why are WE the low hanging fruit? What are people lacking their own lives that makes them such assholes?

  43. RAIDER NATION preaches patience to AL is what the head line should read. because we have put up this shit for how many years now. AL its over bench this guy trade him for a washing machine do something please. Cause the Nation’s patience is running out

  44. Citizen Strange says: October 16, 2009 7:01 PM
We don’t hear from Raiders owner Al Davis very often, which is a shame because his comments are usually sharper and more educational than people give him credit for.
Yeah, 30 years ago he had a couple of lucky years. Very sharp.
    ===================================
Buddy, either your too young to know better, or you’re one of the most ignorant people on the face of the earth.
For your sake, I hope it’s the former.

  45. If he fails to improve from “the worst QB in the NFL maybe ever” status, I say cut him next year. No cap penalty, because no cap. Plus, they will need to take a QB in 2010 or they won’t have a shot at a first rounder until 2012… (Thanks Big Al ;))
Yea, you can get franchise QBs in rounds 3-7, but I don’t recommend planning on it. Most of them don’t even make the team. They usually take a bunch of snaps in camp and get cut or maybe stay 1 year, tops. But then again, there are Tom Brady’s and Marc Bulgers out there…

  46. Listen to me Jamarcus. The eagles are gonna put 7-8 in the box the whole game. Use your audibles. Your the QB. The coach gives you plays, but your the one standing behind center reading the defense. If you think the play is gonna suck, do us all a favor and audible to a play you think will work. You think Dan Marino’s fake spike was a coaches idea? Hell no. Do you wanna be great or do you wanna average? Right now, your neither of them.

  47. I was hoping for my Birthday Al Davis would give me the Franchise, I am a lifelong fan and Know a bit about football. So I would be a step forward 🙂
Face it, Al Will die and leave his role to a Child of his who will make an even bigger mess of it, if that is at all possible. 7 years of Rubbish and arguable the first year with Callahan, it was still Gruden’s old team winning not his. Al can’t admit he isn’t part of the solution. There is your problem. Gruden went, Bruce Allen went as GM. Al takes complete charge and the team dies.
We need Al to stand Back. NO Coach of any calibre will want to coach a team that Al Davis is drafting and selecting the team for. Cable is a puppet and not a head coach.
We need Al to hand over control. A decent GM and a coach with Passion and vision like gruden.

  48. I can’t defend the product Davis is putting on the field, but calling Boomer Esiason “Norman” is just hilarious.

  49. Russell is as stupid as he plays. Does he think he’s playing good football? I think the fans deserve to show their disapproval to Russell and Davis. The team stinks period. Most falls on failure of Russell failing to become a leader on the team. So the benching he got has been to many seasons coming. The Raiders should never have to rid of Garcia……………Maybe while Russell watches the game someone will either hand him a BigMac or some Nachos and cheese. Add 3o more pounds to your body…..Am I a pissed off Raider fan? Damn right I am……
