Bucs bounce Marcus Johnson

Proving once again the time-honored sports adage that excuses are made for the good players and examples are made of the bad ones, a league source tells us that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have cut offensive lineman Marcus Johnson on the same day he was arrested for DUI.

If it had been a player whom the Bucs regard as vital (if, you know, they had any), we’d possibly be hearing about bad reactions to cough syrup and/or jet lag from England.

Since teams technically aren’t permitted to impose discipline on players who run afoul of the league’s substance-abuse policy, Johnson could file a grievance in an effort to recover the balance of his base salary of $620,000.
