Media didn't know that Snyder would be talking

Given that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder never (actually, based on today’s comments, we need to change that to “rarely”) talks during the season, his comments from Tuesday are a pretty big deal.

And Snyder’s words might have been an even bigger deal if the media had known in advance that Snyder would be talking, since many more of them would have shown up to lob some questions in his direction.

As it turns out, the “media advisory” distributed by the team in advance of a “pep rally” regarding the renovation and maintenance of high school football fields said nothing about plans by Snyder to speak.  Consequently, reporters from the Washington Post and the Washington Times were not present.

The event was attended by Redskins blogger Matt Terl and writer Gary Fitzgerald.  The only reporter present who is not employed by the team was Joe White of the Associated Press.

A television reporter also attended (Lindsay Czarniak of NBC 4), but it has been explained to us that the local stations routinely send a camera and a reporter to these charity events.

Snyder surely would not have spoken at all if he knew that he would have been forced to go “next question” or “no comment” in response to the barrage of inquiries he would have faced if the beat writers and others had been there.

Still, to the extent that anyone believes Snyder faced down the surrogates for the horde of red-faced Redskins fans, it simply didn’t happen that way.

  1. The Super Bowl bound Washington Redskins, right Florio?
You picked ’em. There’s still time!!!!

  2. Thank you for clearing that up…no chance he speaks to the “real” media if he’s got no control over the message. A couple of lackies that work for his website don’t count. Lindsay Czarniak doesn’t count either because she was essentially hired by former NBC 4 Sports Director George Michael–who happens to be a friend of Snyder’s. So, as usual, Snyder comes off as the coward that he is.

  3. the season is over for the Redskins. Us fans our looking forward to the draft and watch Philly be a one and done team

  4. They didn’t know he’d be talking because he hadn’t yet stood on a phonebook and the podium is taller than him. More people hear a tree fall in the forest with nobody around than this “rich”ard. Has he lost his street cred yet? Did he ever have any cred at all? Oh yeah, how’s that name change coming along? Being the Redskins with Chief Wahoo as the head coach is probably a little insulting to some.

  5. Vick comments are made the same way and yet no one bothers to mention that. He has yet to be talked to by anyone who has not been pres-screened and questions given in advance so he can practice his answers.
It’s little Dan’s world, let him live it how he sees fit.

  6. I’ll give you three first round picks and pay $100 million over seven years for that guy!!!!!!
    Next coach:Marty
    next qb:??????????????????????????????
ok,ok the guards are coming I gotta run

  7. That’s because Vick is a total dumb ass with an IQ of a bedbug.
When I listen to people like Vick and Clinton Portis and Santana Moss speak, I wonder if they even set foot in a classroom while at college?

  8. What did he say that was so earth-shattering?
    “Yeah, we suck, sorry”
Go back in your hole little man.

  9. Why does the media feel like they have some god-given right to total access to everyone all the time? The media (and the fans) may not like it, but Snyder has no responsibility to notify anyone of his intention to speak, and has the right to control his message any way he wants. How is this different than a press release or a canned apology most people in sports use all the time?
He had a message, and he wanted it to get out the way he intended without media members with their own agendas trying to bait him into saying something incendiary. I’m no Snyder fan, but this righteous indigination from the media every time someone tries to control their own message is ridiculous.
By the way, when did the media become “surrogates for the horde of red-faced Redskins fans”? I’ve got news for you Florio, fans don’t think the media speaks for them. In fact, most fans have little or no use for their local media and even less respect. Stings, I know, but the truth does sometimes.

You wonder if they ever attended a class in college, I am convinced they stopped attending classes after 3rd grade……..
On an unrelated note, I actually wish the Skins would win the next 2 games, for no reason other than the delusional, obnoxiously overly optimistic Skins fans to start plotting out their parade route to celebrate their Super Bowl Championship this season………. Listening to Skins fans is the best entertainment this world has to offer…..
