Reid on Westbrook: “Football is secondary”

Speculation has already started about how long Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will be out after suffering his second concussion of the season.

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche wonders if Westbrook could be out for the season, or possibly for good.

It’s too early to know Westbrook’s long-term prognosis, but Eagles coach Andy Reid recognizes how serious the situation is.

“We’re going to do everything the right way, and take every precautionary measure to make sure Brian’s okay,” Reid said. “In these types of situations, football is secondary. You have to look out for this kid for his future and make sure he is okay before he gets back out there.”

Reid said the Eagles did everything by the book before letting Westbrook return to action against the Chargers.

“We’ll make sure we evaluate it, and take every step that we can to make sure that he’s okay. We did that the last time. We’re going to keep doing it . . . I feel bad for Brian, something our docs are going to look at it and be on top of as soon as we get back,” Reid said.

If the Eagles want to consider signing veteran depth behind LeSean McCoy, they could look at free agents Edgerrin James, Warrick Dunn, and Larry Johnson.
