When Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher elevated Kerry Collins ahead of Vince Young as the team’s starting quarterback last year, there were knocks on Young ranging from the way he prepared himself in practice to the way he made decisions in games.
But now that Young is back as the No. 1 quarterback and playing well, Fisher said those problems are totally in the past.
“We’re completely comfortable with his decision making,” Fisher said at his press conference, a day after Young led the Titans to their third consecutive win.
A year ago, there was strong sentiment in Tennessee that Young’s great athletic talent wasn’t enough to mask his shortcomings as a passer. But Fisher says he’s very happy with the way Young has passed the ball since becoming the starter three weeks ago, and he says that statistically, the Titans haven’t had a quarterback give them such an effective three-game stretch since Steve McNair was at his best.
“He’s had three very, very solid ball games,” Fisher said. “His numbers would reflect that -- it’s the first time we’ve had a quarterback rating in three consecutive games over 90 since 2002.”
Fisher also said Young’s work on the practice field is translating to effective play on Sundays.
“He’s becoming more comfortable in this system,” Fisher said. “He’s getting all the reps now on the practice field as a starter, and I think that’s paying off for him.”
