Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says the news on the knee injury suffered by safety Troy Polamalu in Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals is encouraging.
But Tomlin still thinks it’s unlikely he’ll have Polamalu on the field Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium when the Steelers take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Troy’s status for this game is probably questionable at best,” Tomlin said at his press conference today. “Although we have had some favorable information in regards to where he is from a health standpoint, we’re simply going to take it day-to-day with him.”
Tomlin sounded relieved -- and said Polamalu seemed relieved -- that the knee injury wasn’t as serious as feared when Polamalu first came off the field.
“He’s in a great frame of mind,” Tomlin said of Polamalu. “He feels really good, but we’re going to follow the expert advice that we get from our medical staff in terms of how to proceed. In the short term we’re going to take it day-to-day, see how he feels when he comes into the building tomorrow, but really [Polamalu’s diagnosis is] encouraging -- more encouraging, I think, than initially anticipated.”
Polamalu injured his left knee in the Steelers’ opener and had to miss the next four games. But all indications are that this week’s injury to the same knee isn’t nearly as serious.
