Report: Cedric Benson likely out against Raiders

Larry Johnson might be active in his first game as a Bengal, after all.

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports that Cedric Benson is likely to miss Sunday’s game against Oakland after missing his second consecutive practice Thursday.  Benson’s teammates reportedly do not expect Benson to suit up, which runs contrary to comments Marvin Lewis made earlier in the week.

Resting Benson makes sense.

The Bengals have an explosive backup in Bernard Scott, a fine third-down back in Brian Leonard, and Johnson in reserve.  Cincinnati’s next three opponents have combined for four wins this year.

The best way for the Bengals to get their money’s worth with Johnson is to use him in the next few weeks, so Benson is fresh for the games that count.

  1. I’d sit Benson this week and let LJ ride the pine the rest of the year. Benson has earned everything. Do not take a single snap away from him. LJ is here for what…7 weeks plus playoffs and Benson will be here next year. Do not piss your starting running back off.

  2. Bengals watch out for a trap game – the Raiders will be fired up that JaMarcus finally got benched, Cincy better not take this one lightly or they could be in for a let down.

  3. This is such a ridiculous news story. Of course they are going to rest Benson. He was on pace for over 400 carries, and that just leaves to breakdowns. We need him in good shape for the playoffs, and picking up Johnson makes sense. Johnson gives them a second power running back to rotate and keep Benson fresh for the rest of the season and postseason.
Scrapdawg, as of right now Benson is not signed for next season, and I would be surprised if he is on the team next season since he will most likely ask for franchise numbers. Bengals are in a good spot: they can either resign him or draft someone in the first two rounds.

  4. blestero1,
I agree with you about resting Benson…
However Ced is signed thru the 2010 season. On March 3rd 2009 he signed a 2 year contract worth 7 million dollars. He will probably want to redo his deal after this season but he will be under contract regardless…
That being said as good as Benson has been lets not take away from what the o-line has done this year…
    WHO DEY!!!

  5. The Bengals shouldn’t need Benson or the homophobe against the Raiders. Oakland tends to make almost any opposing back look good.

  6. Hey there stiller43! How’s it goin’ fir ya. Hope you dog is alrite. It was a shame when Earl shot him cause he thought he was a squirrel.
Remember when we was countin’ chickins and a bunch went under yer double wide? Then we found all yer body buildin mags that you thought the neighbor stole? What were them stains on ’em any way? Good times! Good times!

  7. @stiller43
Don’t count our chickens? Remaining schedule includes the Raiders, Browns, Lions, and Chiefs. There is also one against the Jets. The 7 wins we have plus at least 4 of these is 11. No way we miss the playoffs on 11 wins. That won’t happen in consecutive seasons. But we’ll be playing for home field advantage when we face the Vikings and Chargers so I don’t think 14-2 or 13-3 is such a stretch.

  8. This one smells a lot like the Philly game vs. Raiders for the Bengals. Coming off of two emotional wins, the Bengals could suffer the hangover traveling all the way westward. The Raiders will muster up a couple more wins to get us fans all excited like last year, but more of the same. I think the Raider’s D matches up well, particularly with Benson out.

  9. Playoffs? Don’t count your chickens…

After sweeping the Ravens and Steelers its time to barbecue that chicken.

Try to keep it down, Bobby.
We want them to think it’s going to be “like a scrimmage”.
And so far, things are coming along, lol.

  11. Two things I never expected to hear:
“The Cinncinatti Bengals are preparing for the playoffs” and “Cedric Benson needs to rest so he’s ready for the games that count”. Must be gloabal warming or the approach of 2012.

  12. If I were the Bengals, I would start counting my Steelers before they hatch seeing how they swept them.

  13. I agree that this game has potential letdown written all over it for the Bengals: two tough emotional games in a row; and they have never traveled well to the west coast. But the odds are that the Bengals loose at least 2 games with their remaining schedule. They can probably loose three and still make the wild card. So odds are the Bengals are in the playoffs- it is not a given by any means b/c of course anything can happen.
I think you guys who recommend don’t count the chickens can relax. From what I have read on the boards, I have yet to see a Bengals fan seriously say that we are guaranteed a spot or have the bye week wrapped up. Fact is Pittsburgh in a good spot to still win the division, any smart fan understands that. Even if we don’t make the playoffs, it has been a lot fun.
@ Fightback, somehow I missed this news story: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3949154.
They are in a better position than I thought for a run next year. If they have another good offseason, they are going to be a legitimate early season contender in 2010. All they need to do is improve their depth issues: CS, S, LB, TE, & WR. It should be the first time that I can think of where they will not need a early round rookie to step in and start/ produce on day 1.

  14. Sit him for Cleveland too, screw it. No reason to rush and reinjure, LJ should be able to split time w/ Scott and be successful in both games. Wow, i just said that, not only did I just say that, but Benson is my fantasy back. Feels good to root for a team in the middle-late season over my pretend team.

  15. Bengals have packed their lunch pail and hardhats for the bluecollar business at hand…there will be no letdown with this team, they will crush the Raiders..also just a little sidebar to fire up Larry…the Raiders D is comprised of manlovers

  16. Look its pretty simple-
    Benson will rest.
    Scott and Leonard will play.
    LJ will sit as well.
He just got the playbook for crying out loud!
Look for the pass this week. And B Scott tearing up the Raiders D.

  17. u are wrong goettahead—Larry gets 6-8 carries, he is a 7 yr pro who can p/u most of the basic stuff in 3-4 days. Leonard is a third dn back and u won’t see Bernard getting over 12-15 carries—he is a rook, kr and we can’t afford to get him beat up like Benson…and they will continue to be a run 1st, pound away team in Oakland

  18. Cinci could play without Palmer and still beat the crappy Raiders. And I’m a Raiders fan.
