Florida governor wants to see Tebow in Jacksonville

If the Jaguars have a genuine interest in drafting quarterback Tim Tebow next April, we suddenly have a better understanding as to why the team can’t sell out its stadium and/or put together consecutive winning seasons.

Earlier this year, team owner Wayne Weaver committed the cardinal sin of pre-draft strategy -- he tipped his hand.

Now, Florida governor Charlie Crist is getting in on the act. Crist said Monday that he has spoken with Weaver regarding the connection between picking Tebow and selling out the team’s home games.

If the Jags don’t want Tebow, they’re doing great job of setting up a smokescreen. But we tend to think that the interest in Tebow is genuine, and that the message to whoever else might covet Tebow is clear: if you want Tebow, you need to get at least one spot in front of the Jaguars.

The best strategy if the Jaguars want to get Tebow? Say nothing. Better yet, start spreading the word privately that you’ve completed your evaluation, and that you’ve decided you don’t want him, after all.

The pre-draft process requires a high degree of discretion. And it’s hard to be discreet when the only obstacle to loose lips is the saliva bubbling over them.
