Bryant Gumbel had surgery for lung cancer

We’ve written quite a bit around these parts about Bryant Gumbel, who for two seasons was the lead play-by-play voice of NFL Network.

And we’re sorry to note today that Gumbel has revealed he had surgery for lung cancer.

They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor and they took part of my lung and some other goodies,” Gumbel said today while serving as a guest host on Live with Regis and Kelly.

Gumbel, who looked thin but seemed happy and sounded the same as always, says he’s OK “for the time being.”

We wish Gumbel a speedy recovery.

  1. by “sounded the same as always” you mean sounded like Kermit the Frog, right?
But in all seriousness, I wish him the best.

  2. Arrogant, yes. Racist? I doubt it. He’s a very intelligent person who is one the few that can have an objective opinion on various issues. He rubs people the wrong way because he is a little bit of an elitist prick, but some of it stems from the fact that hes probably smarter than most. I agree he is an awful announcer. I love real sports on HBO though. Whatever, my 2 cents. Get well Bryant

  3. Hope he comes through, that NFLN crew needs some help.
Greatest Bryant Gumbel line EVER, from Chappelle’s Show :
“Negrodamus, why do white people love Wayne Brady so much?”
“White people love Wayne Brady, because he makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X.”

  4. A deepening voice is often a marker for lung cancer, sure wasn’t in this case.
My mother beat it for 12 years so far, and she didn’t smoke so all things are possible.

  5. Rick Romo and Al Gore send their best wishes to Mr. Gumbel, who by the way looks like Malcolm X next to Wayne Brady.
