Giants are looking good for the postseason

Written off after a 5-0 start melted into a four-game losing streak and a win-one, lose-one vibe since then, the Giants actually are in great shape for a shot at the postseason.

Sure, if the season ended today, they’d be home for the holidays.  But the path to the playoffs doesn’t entail significant machinations and permutations.

Step 1:  Beat the Panthers and the Vikings.

Step 2:  Hope that the Cowboys will lose to the Redskins or the Eagles, or that the Packers will lose to the Seahawks or the Cardinals.

If that happens, the Giants will be in.

That said, the Redskins and the Seahawks can’t be expected to put up a stiff challenge this weekend to Dallas and Green Bay, respectively.  With the NFC West crown clinched and no real hope for securing a bye, the Cardinals might tank it in Week 17.

So the key will be the Eagles.   Since they’re chasing the Vikings for the No. 2 seed, they’ll be trying their damnedest to knock off the Cowboys, as the Giants are trying their damnedest to knock off the Vikings, who’ll be trying their damnedest to hold off the Eagles.

Bottom line?  Don’t write off the Giants.  If they can take care of their upcoming business, one false move by the Cowboys or the Packers will open the door for the 2007 Super Bowl champions to make another run at a title.

  1. Giants win out, Philly wins out.
Eli beats Favre again as Giants beats Minn in wild card weekend.

  2. Nice headline that is far removed from your closing paragraph. Why not start with don’t write off the Giants in case they manage to suddenly come up with a defense and beat the Vikings on the road. Or in other words I got nothing but please read my article anyway.

  3. I’m pretty sure the Skins can put up a “stiff” competition against the Cowboys. Anyone who is a Cowboys, Redskins, NFL, or even a sports fan knows that when two arch-rivals play you throw the records out (apparently, Czar Florio is unaware of this even though I’ve personally seen West Virginia give it to better Virginia Tech teams and vice versa. Aren’t you supposed to be a sports fan to write about sports? At least it should help, right?). The Dallas vs. Washington game is being played at home on prime time, and even though the Monday nighter was played in Washington on prime time, special things happen when the Cowboys and Skins play. The Skins would love nothing more then to help the cause to keep Dallas out of the playoffs, which was probably the driven motivation behind playing so poorly last night.

  4. except for that fact that the giants won’t beat the vikings who are trying to hold on to their 1st round bye

  5. This is like 2007 all over again. The Washinton game last night is eerily similar to the Buffalo game back in ’07; the Giants were banged up & people were writing them off. It’s so much similar that Bradshaw, like he did against Buffalo, had a HUGE game. If you look back at ’07, the Giants defense was much maligned. They were horrible, but turned it on late. I have nothing but confidence that the Giants will make the playoffs, most likely with the Cowboys losing a game. Once in, the Road Warriors will return & they’ll make a run to Miami.
As for the Cowboys, I urge all their fans not to read too much into the Saints game. The Saints were ripe for picking on Saturday. The Saints barely squeaked by against 2 horrible reams the last 2 weeks. I see the Cowboys losing these last 2, once again killing their hope & giving the Giants life.

  6. Jwinn,
Agreed – anything can happen when rivals meet, but do you REALLY believe that the Redskins are in any shape to knock off the Cowboys? Cover the spread, maybe. That may have been the worst performance on MNF in a long time, and that’s saying something.

  7. So there is also a pretty good chance to see the same two teams play two weeks in a row. If the Eagles and Giants both win out, then we’ll see the Giants and Vikings play in week 17 and wild card weekend.
If the Vikings win out and philly gets the third seed, then there is a really good chance the Eagles and Cowboys play in week 17 and wild card weekend.
    That should make things interesting.

  8. Wow. I can just see you guys writing an article like this about the Cowboys. “Cowboys looking good for the playoffs.” That day will never come.

  9. If the Cowboys win out they win the Division.
They would hold the tie-breaker over Philly…
plus the Giants are going to get beat next week against the Panthers.

  10. “Giants are looking good for the postseason.”
OK, so they only get in IF they sweep the next two games, against the Panthers and Vikings(in the dome where they are 7-0 this season. THEN, Dallas has to lose to either the Redskins or Eagles. AAAAANND the Packers have to lose to either the Seahawks or Cardinals.
Yes, the Redskins got killed at home by the Giants last night. And the Cowboys already beat the Eagles in Philly.
And Yes, the Seahawks got killed at home by Tampa Bay. And the Cardinals will have nothing to play for the final week of the season.
But of course, the Giants don’t just have a chance to get into the postseason…THEY ARE LOOKING GOOD FOR THE POSTSEASON!!!!!!
    Dumbest. Headline. Ever.

  11. “Step 2: Hope”
That impeaches your entire article. Their destiny is not in their hands.

  12. @ Kappy
While most of us Cowboys fans understand that the Saints nearly lost 2 road games to poor teams, we also understand that they went into one of the most hostile enviroments and knocked off an undefeated team. Using your theory we could say that Giants are the best team in the NFC because they beat up the skins who nearly beat the Saints and played Dallas to within a point. Beating the Saints was a huge momentum builder and a psychological win that is going to lead to confidence which was something they were lacking. Plus they might be getting back Marc Columbo which would solidify the O-Line again and open up the run game.

  13. The Vikings have looked awful the past 2 weeks and have a potential implosion on their hands… Favre should’ve stayed retired when the Giants beat the Packers in their once-legendary stadium 2 years ago.

  14. Giants will lose one or both of their final two games and WOULD NOT beat the Vickings even if they made it to the playoffs.
Schitzo defense and Eli is NOT the Peyton, not the Peyton.

  15. this is nothing like 2007. Bill Sheridan is no Steve Spagnuolo… this motivation to win is going to have to come directly from the Man himself (i’m referring to Tom Coughlin). i think he is the reason the Giants fired on all cylinders last night. Sheridan is obviously not long for this world if the Giants can’t squeak into the post season.
i love the reaction to the Cowgirls win on Thursday. congrats, you beat an unbeaten team, and in doing so may have made them even more motivated to win the Super Bowl. meanwhile, all the talk about the Cowboys December monkey off the back and they still have to win out to save their hide. Romo is playing well, but big fat Wade will find a way to screw it up.

  16. Yeah Kappy we know, any team that the Cowboys beat is not a good team by definition, and no games that the Cowboys win is ever a big game… however, every game they lose is a big game. I urge you to not get too excited over the Giants beating the Redskins. The only way they beat the Vikings is if the Vikings sit a lot of starters. And I wouldn’t take it as a given that they’ll beat the Panthers, either.

  17. @Daws84: Eli’s frustrations against the Vikings take a hit when you consider most (if not all) of those 8 picks were by Darren Sharper, who is now gone.
The Eli Manning led Giants offense has been playing very well for weeks now. If the defense shows up for even a handful of series, the Giants have the firepower to put up the points to win. It’s improbable to count on that, but completely shutting down a hot Washington offense like they did last night will only build confidence.

  18. None of us know how this thing will play out. If we did we would be in Reno or Vegas instead of mouthing back and forth with each other.

  19. Your out your damn mind if you think the Giants are on their way to the Playoffs. So they beat a HS Redskin team, you think by that they are on their way, guarantee choke in NY. And stop worrying about Dallas, they are taking Wild Card.

  20. As an Eagles fan I find myself in a weird situation. The Giants and Eagles would be helping each other by winning in week 17? Wow, what to do? Well, I hate the Cowboys and most of their sorry ass fans, so I guess I will pull for the G-Men. Don’t get me wrong, any Eagles fan would much rather face the Cowboys than the Giants, but I will take the bye above either.

  21. Vox,
I see you are still bitter that the Giants beat your cowboys twice. They are good enough to beat them twice but you predict that they can’t beat the panthers?

  22. Actually Vox, we agree. The Cowboys never win big games…they always lose them. At least, since 1996.

Yeah they looked awful in waxing the Bengals.

  24. “If they can take care of their upcoming business, one false move by the Cowboys or the Packers will open the door for the 2007 Super Bowl champions to make another run at a title.”
By having their defense complete fold in the first game they play?
Seriously, this article is crap. The Giants defense is crap.

  25. HA! What a load of crap. Looking to build up some hits with this garbage?
You completely write off Dallas and say that the Giants have a good shot at the playoffs? Dallas is playing JUST AS MUCH for Minny’s spot as Philly is, so why don’t you report that you FRAUD.

Eli can’t beat the Vikes…he is 0-3 and has thrown 8 picks against them.
    ___________________________________
No darren sharper and you’re missing the fact that the giants when they had their starters in were handing it to minn last yr, then they rested them for 2 1/2 quarters bc they already clinched a bye. You know what happened the last time the giants played the vikings in the playoffs right? nfc championship, it was a close one 41-0 Gmen.

  27. Enough is Enough
If you aholes do not get it Eli is having a great year is he Payton no When Payton was in his forth year he did not win the SB was not the MVP
Eli is the leader of that team and is doing a damn good job of it if the D had shown up when we played the egurls that would have been a win
Stop hating Eli just because you all wish you had him
When all is said and done he will have better stats that Payton and will join him in the HOF
Romo will be working at taco bell
    Campbell will be parking cars
Donvan will be give Vick head in a parking lot
Lord Farve is done he is emploding Eli and company smacked the shit out of him in GB and I am sure that ego freak will gunsling when we see them in a few weeks
Ziggy the Wolf still has his season tickets to the Giants he goes so he can see true Champions not has beens and never weres
In closing Merry Christmas and Child Please

  28. “As for the Cowboys, I urge all their fans not to read too much into the Saints game. The Saints were ripe for picking on Saturday. The Saints barely squeaked by against 2 horrible reams the last 2 weeks.”
You guys change tunes quicker than Elvis Costello on SNL.
Before the game you guys all gathered for the Cowboys funeral pyre, giving them no chance at all and were practicing your grave dancing.
Now that Dallas did what they did, it’s all ” N O sucked anyway so it means nothing.”
That is why I personally ignore all the ” Dallas/Romo can’t win the big game” drivel you guys leave behind you like a snail trail, because to you folks, it’s never a big game after they win it.

  29. And I agree with anyone on here who knows that the records mean nothing when Dallas and the Skins play. No matter how much the players change, the hatred remains.Always will be that way. But no excuses, if Dallas cannot beat the Skins, they don’t deserve to make the play-offs. Period.

  30. If the Eagles lose this weekend and guarantee the Vikes the second seed, they won’t even give a rat’s ass if they win the last game against the Giants. As a Viking fan, it would just tear me up to see Green Bay eliminated from the wild card if our scrubs lost the last game.

  31. Exactly what I said was gonna happen…. The Giants and Eagles are like a WWF tag-team they hate each other but their combining forces to better themselves.
The Giants will knock off the Vikings for the Eagles and the Eagles will knock off the Cowboys for the Giants.
Then the 6)Giants will take out the 3)Vikings and the 5)Packers will take out the 4)Cardinals in the wildcard round. Then the 6)Giants will take out the 1)Saints and the 2)Eagles will take out the 5)Packers in the divisional round. Then the 2)Eagles will continue their playoff dominance of the 6)Giants in the NFC Championship Game and make their way to Super Bowl XXXXIV to face the Chargers.

  32. So….IF the Giants win their last 2 games, and IF either Dallas or Green Bay loses 1 of their last 2 games, the Giants are in. Also, IF Philly loses, Minniehaha gets a bye. All sounds completely plausible to me.
Oh…and IF my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle.

  33. @ Jay
incase you missed it, they won a big game against an undefeated team last week. get over it

  34. If the Eagles lose this weekend and guarantee the Vikes the second seed, they won’t even give a rat’s ass if they win the last game against the Giants. As a Viking fan, it would just tear me up to see Green Bay eliminated from the wild card if our scrubs lost the last game.
Wrong Dallas can get the 2nd seed two if the vikes play like they did last week and agaist the cards they could lose to da bears and giants give dallas the #2

  35. eli sucks, he benifits from a somewhat ok running game. he cant win game on his own. (p.s bigbluefan it is PEYTON… retard. ) the only way he gets into the hall is the ole miss hallof shame. to use a george bush word that is dumbassery. if eli is so good how come he cant beat the eagles on a regular basis or in a big game of this year or last year. eli is our bitch just like when he is the giants shower….

  36. Great shape is a stretch. Green Bay plays an awful team at Lamblow and a team that 100% will be resting Kurt Warner and many starters to finish the season. If the Vikings beat the Bears this Monday then Philly would have no reason to beat the Cowboys as they’d be locked into their spot with Minny’s perfect divisional record and resulting tiebreaker in that scenario.
So the Giants want the Vikings to lose to the Bears, giving Philly all the reason to beat the Cowboys. But in that case the Vikings will be playing their hardest at home and they are very tough in the Dome.
So yeah, if great shape means they have a 10% or less chance of getting in then by all means they are sitting pretty.

  37. You know all of these idiot Eagle fans on here make me hope they do make the playoffs and Dallas doesn’t….. I mean if Dallas doesn’t make the playoffs than I don’t have to hear morons talk about not winning a playoff game or Romo choking in a playoff game but I can laugh my tail off at Eagle fans when their Captain’s of letdown McNabb and FATReid lose yet again in an NFC championship and McNabb gets another extension for getting his team there but losing… again….

  38. There’s no way Dallas loses to the Jim Zorn Redskins.
    Absolutely no way.
The Ginny however will face a desperate and rising Panthers and a desperate Minnesota who will have a lot riding on the game. Sorry Eli, you should never have gone full retard.

  39. @eagles_2031: that’s funny. because, by all accounts, the Giants run game has been way off its usual game this season, but Eli has played the best football of his career despite having a bad plant foot for 3/4 of the season. the Eagles have only “owned” the Giants for the last two seasons, and any Eagle/Giant fan should know how quickly the tables turn in that rivalry.

  40. Emmitt, I’m talking about the last week’s games and assuming the Vikes will have beaten the Bears this weekend, in which case your Cowboys couldn’t make up the 2 game deficit.

The giants have a running game?? thats news to me and anyone who knows football. Youre prob the same person who says eli is horrible without plaxico. Truth is, the eagles didnt own eli at all 2 weeks ago, they had over 500 yards in offense and their wrs dropped another 200 yards worth of easy passes. at least get your facts straight. in fact the giants had more offensive td’s and yards, all bc of that horrible qb eli manning. The tides change a lot in this series, for most of his career eli has owned the eagles. that eli is slow and retarded comment by everyone is old and lame, people say it without any rhyme or reason. brees, peyton and eli have the most consecutive 20 td and 3000 yards season streaks going, that eli is trent dilfer joke is kinda played and corny by now. the kid is good.

  42. troll_aikman, who is the “ginny” ? eli is italian now? and like i said earlier, if full retard puts him w brees and peyton for most consecutive 20 td and 3000 yard seasons , ill take full retard any day of the week. the retard has never missed the playoffs as a starter and hopefully that streak continues. and the retard doesnt even have a run game, plaxico or a good defense. you must be a horrible qb and trent dilfer to wind up ending the yr w over 4000 yards and 30 td’s and a 2 to 1 td to int ratio. based on your name youre either a eagle fan or redskin fan, the retard eventhough his defense and jacobs lost him that game was pretty nasty against the eagles.

  43. Division games for us is like drinking acid and wondering how it will taste.
No matter whom dominates, it has always flipped at the least expected moment.
I expect Philly to win out. I’m hoping Washington beats Dallas and that Minny drops one of the last two.

  44. I’m a dye-in-the-wool Giants fan. I have to hope that what needs to happen will happen. I mean anyone can write however insultingly about the G-Men if they wish to. If you’re a Giants fan it isn’t going to make any difference what anyone else writes or thinks or says because you’ll still be there cheering Big Blue on come what may.
Besides, for example, after watching the Steelers go down to the likes of Cleveland and the Raiders anything is possible.
    GO GIANTS!!!

  45. at this point it is hard to say who will get in, but to say the “Giants are looking good for the postseason”?!?! is obviously a web site hit producing fabrication on Florio’s part. Don’t you get enough web traffic to refrain from this malady of promotion?
And after watching last nites game the Redskins have no chance of winning another game this year, leader-less, rudder-less confused organization they are. So Dallas can diffuse more December generalizations with an easy win. Packers will win handily over a pathetic Seattle team they have owned in recent history, and with week 17 games against unwilling opponents
Dallas and GB take the playoff spots.
My intelligent logic means first round rematches of week 17 games. Very interesting.
btw, the reason Chilly tried to pull Farve is because Farve has been audibiling ALOT, look at the run/pass numbers.

  46. you giants fans are crazy, your averaging over a 124 yards a game so dont say you dont have a rushing game. that is in the top ten in the nfl so check your facts. truth is the eagles have won 4 straight against you including taking you out of the playoffs last year. cry me a river about eli, mcnabb plays hurt all the time. eli is a joke, so he had 500 yards of offence, big deal he still lost the game. that is all that matters, wins and loses, eli sucks and everyone knows it…

  47. @jkorn
    1) Eli did nothing to win that game. The Eagles D could not tackle for some odd reason
    2) Theres no way that the Giants would have generated 700 yards of offense if those receivers caught “200 yards worth” of passes.
    3) The Giants have been smoked by the Eagles this year
    4) I would be excited if my Eagles faced the Giants in the playoffs. We would glady continue our playoff dominance over you guys and get an easier road to the Super Bowl

  48. Biggest difference between 2007 and now is NOT Spags vs. Sheridan. Sure that’s important, but the REAL issue is in 2007 the Giants D was healthy and led the league in sacks. This year, especially now, the D is decimated with injuries and can’t generate any real pressure against the QB (Washington game excluded). Giants have have 22 LESS sacks now than they did at the end of 2007 season. I don’t know anyone that thinks they will get 22 sacks in the last two games. Without any pressure upfront, the Giants defensive backups don’t have the talent or the ability to go on an extended playoff run – IF they make it. Pains me to say it, but it’s true.

  49. I would like to see the Giants play the Eagles again. The Eagles are playing great, but I doubt any NFC East team could beat another NFC East team 3 times in a season….yes, even the Redskins….

  50. Normally I’d say the Giants won’t beat the Vikings, especially since Eli plays real bad against them. But because the Vikings have been real bad, I wouldn’t be surprised if they won…

  51. Vox Vagina: ” I would be excited if my Eagles faced the Giants in the playoffs. We would glady continue our playoff dominance over you guys and get an easier road to the Super Bowl.”
    —————–
You’re 2-1 against the Giants in the playoffs, including one close game that was decided on a last second FG, how is that dominance, exactly?

  52. I hear all this talk about the Steelers being dangerous if they make the playoffs. Understandable. But no ones sayin the Giants will be dangerous.
Giants and Steelers have won the Suberbowl in recent years entering in the wild card. The Giants defense showed life. Eli and Big Ben are clutch as hell. Steelers vs Giants in the Super Bowl would be awesome…or Giants vs the 18-0 Colts 🙂 Imagine Eli beting a perfect team TWICE, this time beating his brother (Peyton’s excellent and I have nothing but respect for him.)
Down the line, Jets vs Giants in the superbowl would be great. Football equivalent of the subway series.
Not trying to diss the other teams, these are the scenarios I want and think could happen.

  53. @emmittsmithfan22
hahaha If you seriously think the Cowboys have any real chance at getting the #2 playoff seed and a bye, then you should probably get your head checked. You should be praying that you make the playoffs at all.
    Wow you are delusional.

Tard, because 2001 is a precusor to what happens in 2009……idiotic statement.
That’s ok , you spew nothing but inaneness daily on here anyway.

  55. in 2007 the giants had a defence ………………now they dont. beating the redskins does not a defence make. giants are done.. you vagiant fans are so clueless.

  56. Its kind of fun to dream Giants fans, but what sucks for you is, you guys sucked this season and now you need to cross your fingers and hope for a playoff spot.

  57. I love it when the Giants are considered underdogs. It makes it all the sweeter when they win.

  58. First you are not correct in stating that Arizona has nothing to play for. They still have an outside shot at the #2 seed.
Second this is shaping up for a very unusual situation for fans of the Eagles and the Giants. The best case scenerio for each team is that they both win their remaining two games. Therefore NYG and Philly fans will not only be cheering for their own team, but for an NFC East rival. If either team loses their next game, then they will have little left to play for in the last week of the season. Both teams need the other to win their last game to have a shoot at their most desirable playoff seeding. If the Giants win this week, then they will face the Vikings in week 17 for a very good chance at the final wild card spot. If the Eagles win this week they will face the Cowboys for a chance at the #2 seeding. So for both teams the best possible outcome would be for the Giants and Eagels to go a combined 4-0 the rest of the way.

  59. And even if the G-Men don’t make it to the play-off’s(Although I think they will.), I can live very well during the off-season with the knowledge that they swept the Pokes, and absolutely ruined Jerry Jones’ opening night stadium dedication/ extravaganza to his ego last September. I hadn’t enjoyed a win like that one since Super Bowl XLII.
Jerry should have remembered a biblical quote:
“And whoever exhalts himself shall be humbled.”
    GO GIANTS!!!

  60. The Giants are going to make Matt Moore look worse then Jake has all year long.
Then, the old man will feel the pressure of a MUST win situation, against the Giants, AGAIN.
How did that go for Brett the last time?
No one on this thread wants to say it, but if the GMeN make it – every team in the NFC, including the Eagles and Saints – could be in trouble.
