Steelers' playoff scenarios aren't that bad

Two weeks ago, when the Pittsburgh Steelers were 6-7, it looked like a virtual certainty that the defending Super Bowl champions wouldn’t return to the playoffs.

But now the Steelers are 8-7, and after the NFL released the official playoff scenarios today, Pittsburgh’s chances actually look pretty good.

The league office announced today that the Steelers will make the playoffs if they beat the Dolphins on Sunday and any of the following three things happen:

1. The Texans and Jets both lose or tie.

2. The Texans and Ravens both lose or tie.

3. The Jets, Ravens and Broncos all lose or tie.

The first of those three scenarios is the most likely to happen, and the biggest problem for the Steelers is that they don’t know whether the Texans’ and Jets’ opponents — the Patriots and Bengals — will be trying to win on Sunday. As Mike Florio noted in the Week 16 Morning Aftermath, the Bengals have a dilemma on their hands heading into Week 17.

If they’re trying to win, the Patriots would likely be favored to win at Houston and the Bengals might be favored to win at New York. But since the Patriots and Bengals have both clinched their divisions, they might decide to rest key players on Sunday and have them healthy for the first round of the playoffs a week later.

So, if you’re a Steelers fan, you need to root for your team to beat the Dolphins. And you need to root for Bill Belichick and Marvin Lewis to go for a win.

80 responses to “Steelers' playoff scenarios aren't that bad

  1. If NE wins why would the Bengals play to beat the Jets? If the Jets beat the Bengals than they’d get to face the Jets again in the Wildcard round and could knock out their division rivals. Play to lose and knock Pitt out of the playoffs

  2. Maybe the Rooney’s can send the Super Bowl officiating crew when the beat Seattle to officiate the Bengals/Jets game, and then they can send yesterdays officiating crew to Houston for the Pats/Texans game, and it will be a sure thing that the Pats and Bengals win……just saying

  3. Not that bad?? They need at a minimum 2 teams to lose!
But you hit it on the last statement. The Steelers need to win. Not going to happen.

  4. “the biggest problem for the Steelers is that they don’t know whether the Texans’ and Jets’ opponents — the Patriots and Bengals — will be trying to win on Sunday.”
Why wouldn’t they be trying to win? Even if the games are meaningless to them, they wouldn’t suit up if they were not interested in winning the game…

  5. Teams that lose at home to the Raiders shouldn’t be in the playoffs. That eliminates the Steelers and Broncos.

  6. Are you kidding me? All scenario’s are bad for a team with no defense or running game. Without Troy they just ain’t getting it done and Tomlin has totally abandoned the run…if Noll and Cowher were dead they would be turning over in their graves at the way MT has allowed this team to lose its identity.

  7. This would have all been simpler if Jim Caldwell hadn’t been an idiot and benched Manning so early in the game. I hope the Colts bomb out of the playoffs in righteous karmic retribution.

  8. Man, I can’t wait for the “Ravens’ playoff scenarios aren’t that bad” article or the “Broncos’ playoff scenarios aren’t that bad” article or the “Jets’ playoff scenarios aren’t that bad” article. Oh wait, the writers on this site aren’t fans of other teams… Come on MDS, suck up to Florio on your own time!

  9. I’d imagine that the Bengals and the Pats would rather play the Jets or the Texans in the playoffs than the Steelers. So…. look for them to possibly rest as many people as they can and play soft.

  10. Brady will pad his, Moss’, and Welker’s stats and the Jets will get Sanchized, meaning the Steelers are in.

  11. squeelers suck. officiating won them another game just like the poorly officiated game in the SB against the seahawks. that game yesterday was one of the worst officiated games against the ravens I have ever seen. It lost the game for them and I hate to see the refs control outcomes of games.
HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!! SB BABY.

  12. Scenario #1 is incorrect.
If the Ravens, Steelers, and Broncos are all tied, the first tiebreaker is applied, which is the lower team in any division is eliminated. I don’t know where you got that Florio, but it is wrong.
If the Ravens win, the Steelers need the Broncos, Texans, and Jets to all lose in order to make the playoffs.
    From the NFL site:
    Three or More Clubs
” 1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.”
This means that if Pittsburgh, Denver, and the Ravens are all 9-7, it is Pittsburgh and Denver. It also means that if Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and anyone else is 9-7, Pittsburgh is out.
Pittsburgh is totally screwed and the odds are terrible that they will make it, as they pretty much need every 8-7 team to lose for them to get in.

  13. I picked the Steelers to beat the Packers and to beat the Ravens. Won some money there, and yet i still find it unlikely they make the playoffs. Unlike last year where teams lost to teams not in the playoffs who played their butt off, like Carolina last night, the Pats and Bengals are already in. Which means they will rest players. Carson Palmer, Cedric Benson, Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and other key players will not play much. So do the Steelers get in, no, and i don’t like their chances. They are tough to say the least.

  14. Did the NFL also mention why they moved the Jets/Bungles to Sunday night? If the Bungles see that the Pats won (which they will) they can’t move up in seeding therefore will have nothing to play for.

  15. I meant to say that if it is a 3 way tie with Denver, Pittsburgh and the Ravens, it is Denver and the Ravens.
The Ravens have a better divisional record than Pittsburgh, thus eliminating Pittsburgh in any scenario where there is a 3 way tie.
Therefore, if the Ravens win and Pittsburgh wins, Pittsburgh needs the Jets, Broncos, and Texans to lose.

  16. OK, OK, allow me to retort …
As a Steelers fan, I would be the first to say that this team absolutely deserves its tenuous position. There is no excuse losing to KC, Oak and Clev and then hoping to get in the playoffs. So, you guys are right about that. They don’t deserve it (about as much as the Jets deserved that win over Indy).
That said, anyone who thinks the officials aided Pittsburgh’s win against the Ravens is either a blind Steeler hater or just a jack ass. Clearly the penalties called on the Ravens TDs were obvious penalties – stupid penalties. Replays showed it time and again. And if anyone has a bitch – bitch at Mason. he dropped the damn ball in the end zone.
I laugh when I hear people STILL harping that the officials gave the Steelers their SB win over Seattle. Uh-huh. Get over it. If you can’t, you should really seek some professional help.
Oh well, so the Steelers probably won’t make the playoffs this year. Life will go on for us Steelers fans. After all, we also realize that Haley’s Comet comes but once every 75 years … kinda like how often the Steelers miss the playoffs.
Good luck to those who do. It’s a fun time of year.

  17. Just a question…but does the that 3 way rule apply to both teams getting in or would it just settle the 5th seed? Basically after the 5th seed is determined would it then go to a head to head tiebreaker for the 6th?

  18. Actually Herm you are wrong. If the Ravens, Broncos, and Steelers all end up 9-7…The #5 seed will be the Ravens against the Broncos. The Steelers get eliminated because they would be 3rd in the division behind the Ravens. Ravens #5 because they own the head to head against the Broncos. Now, it starts over. #6 would be Steelers against Broncos. We go #6 because we own the head to head. Hope that helps.

  19. Great we have another knucklehead blogging about the steelers. MDS your articles already were pointless but to blantantly post one about just the steelers chances of the playoffs is unreal. i thought only espn and the officials sucked the teet of the steelers but here is another d-bag writer. keep it fair and besides they are the last team lookin up at the playoffs and they would also need the broncos to lose. go cry in your yellow towel you queer. (for the record this is the first time i have ever had a problem with any article on this site. I really enjoy florio even though i know he is a steeler fan)

  20. If the team plane carrying the Colts crashed into the team plane carrying the Patriots while they were both simultaneously overhead of the Chargers practice facility, the Steelers would have a chance to make the playoffs…

  21. Not to mention the Steelers being manhandled yesterday by the patched up Ravens. Two touchdowns called back by penalties, one touchdown pass dropped and not to mention the non-called pass interference against the Raven’s tight end in the end zone. With New Orleans cooling down, and the Colts possibly going into the playoffs on a two game losing streak who knows what can happen. Right now the Chargers are on fire – let’s see if they can keep flame ignited.

  22. in a 3 way tie with donkeys and birdies, steelers are eliminated because you only get one team from each division which is birdies because of better div record.
then you start over and steelers knock out donkeys because of the head to head.
same thing happens with jets, donkeys, steelers tie.

  23. Steelers are not having one of their better years, but at least they’re hanging in…..great tradition folks, you know what I’m saying?

  24. Herm-you’re incorrect. You do the tiebreaking procedure for the 3 playoff teams (Broncos, Ravens, Steelers in your stated example) for EACH wildcard spot.
ie. for #5 seed, Ravens eliminate Steelers but they beat Broncos…..#5 goes to Ravens
the tiebreaker procedure then repeats for the #6 seed…….Broncos vs. Steelers…..Steelers get the 6 spot due to beating Broncos head to head.
It IS very confusing on the NFL website, but this is accurate and your post is inaccurate.

  25. As a Steelers fan, I would love to see us get in but I think it will not happen. Based on Vegas Jets are 9 pt favs, Ravens 10 pt favs & Texans are 7 pt favs. Not that it can’t happen but the way this year has been for Pitt, I can see us getting the help we need but losing to Miami. I’m just glad that we have a pulse going into week 17. It is more then I could ask for after the Cleveland game. As for the Colts, the last time they rested players we beat them in the divisional round. The time they won the Super Bowl they didn’t rest players. Karma is a bitch for the colts.

  26. Steelers are out….there is no way Cincy, NE show up, and Oakland will not beat the ravens and KC will not beat the Broncos, so as a Steeler fan I have packed it in and I am heading to the golf course.
Troy, Troy, Troy is all we hear, the guy gets hurt every year, it is time to but him out to pasture. I’m ready to sell my 43 jersey. To tell the truth Aaron Smith is missed much more than Troy.
But for the playoffs, the Steelers are on life support and about to get the plug pulled.

  27. steaglefan??????
Troy has missed 8 games in his career before this year in 6 seasons! That’s a little more then 1 game per year.
Please know your facts before you post!

  28. Cincy and NE are going to tank in order to prevent the most dangerous wild card team from getting in the playoffs.
Indy tanked for the same reason.
Peyton don’t want no taste of Pittsburgh.

  29. I could very easily see both the Jets and Texans imploding, given their histories. Steelers will finish strong and get to at least the second round of the playoffs, probably against NE.

  30. As I have said before, the Steelers were their own worst enemy this year, as they beat themselves more than other teams beat them. If they don’t make the playoffs, it will be on their shoulders. As a Steelers fan, I can accept that and not cry about it, unlike some of the haters who blame the refs for allowing the Steelers to win, etc.
On the Ravens game, I have yet to hear one person prove that any of the penalties called against the Ravens yesterday was not a valid call. The Ravens should have been pissed at their own players, not the refs. Also, the refs didn’t cause Mason to drop the TD pass. The same as the refs did not make Mendenhall catch the TD pass he dropped early in the game (imagine their GALL of not making him catch that pass!!). And I hear none of the haters agreeing that the Mason fumble after the hit was in fact a fumble and not an incomplete pass. Yep, the refs sure were on the Steelers’ side yesderday.
And don’t tell me about being outplayed. I have seen the Steelers outplay a number of teams over the many years but still lose the game. Nothing matters at the end except the final score. Stats are meaningless unless it is a “W”.
Now, as a fan I certainly hope the Steelers make it into the playoffs. Even if they do, they may not win it all. But the goal is to get there. Anything can happen on any given Sunday.
I frankly do not believe any of the AFC teams want to play the Steelers in the playoffs. It is because of their history, Ben’s capabilities, Troy coming back for the playoffs, etc. I expect the Bengals and Pats to rest everyone, at least early into the game. However, history has shown that resting your starters before the playoffs is not necessarily the best decision, and teams can lose their edge.
Haters and crybabies, you may get your wish and not have to face the Steelers in the playoffs this year.
    GO STEELERS!!

HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!! SB BABY.
    ———————————-
Cowboys win a few games and now their fans think they’re super bowl bound. Cowboys won’t get past the first round.

  32. Actually Herm, you are incorrect. Florio did not make up those scenarios on his own, they come from the NFL as released this morning.
You are so blinded by your hatred that you did not even read that stated aspect within the post. Keep strong my man, stick to your guns, fuel your hatred, keep drinking the conspiracy koolaid. In the end the Steelers will always be a better franchise than the one you support.

  33. Any true football fan (Steelers included) who watched that game yesterday would come away saying that the Ravens gift wrapped the game for Pittsburg. Screw the officials. You can’t win a game when you have 3 TD’s taken off the board. The Mason drop was horrible. The Washington block on the Magahee TD was stupid and the Suggs illegal block was totally meaningless in the play. The Ravens lost because they did not play a disciplined game. Had they done so it would have been an easy win. The Steelers, on the other hand, played disciplined football. They didn’t outplay the Ravens at all, but they didn’t LOSE the game like the Ravens did. Bottom line – disciplined football wins. Don’t blame the refs fellow Raven fans, blame our team that commits too many stupid penalties.

  34. Bill Cowher Chin is dead on the money.
The Steelers have been getting calls for years in this league. It is time for this to stop.
    Quit paying the refs.

  35. The Ravens motto is “We win, we’re in”!
All that other speculation is a waste of time.
    GO RAVENS!!!

  36. “Cincy and NE are going to tank in order to prevent the most dangerous wild card team from getting in the playoffs…Indy tanked for the same reason…Peyton don’t want no taste of Pittsburgh.”
    ^^^^^
I can’t speak for the gutless horseshoe-helmeted organization, but as far as teams that “don’t want no taste of Pittsburgh”…Cincinnati is 2-0 vs. Pittsburgh this year and New England is 2-0 in the playoffs vs. Pittsburgh this decade.
Nobody is scared of Pittsburgh, especially those two teams.

  37. I love how all these Pittsburgh fans think that everything is based on avoiding them in the playoffs. Yeah, like the Bengals are supposed to be afraid of a team that they beat twice? A team that lost to US, the Chiefs, Ravens, Browns and Raiders…all in a ROW? Get over yourself. If the Bengals sit, it’s because they need to get healthy. It’s because they need Peko, Crocker, Tank and others to get better to make a run (or at least give ourselves the best chance). I’m not gonna say we’re the best or anything like that, but THIS YEAR we were better than Pittsburgh. Consistently. All year.
So, as opposed to reminding everyone why NOBODY likes the Steelers, eat a piece of humble pie. You have no reason to speak at this point.

  38. For people complaining about the refs in Super Bowl 40, don’t you remember Polamalu’s interception against Indy?

  39. As always, the game between the Steelers and Ravens was close–anyone who expected a blowout was crazy.
Aside from the officials, dropped passes, fumbles, and penalties, I do want to make a statement about the players on the field. This season was completely different than last season. Yeah, the game were close, but the players were different. Last year, Ben got sacked and the Ravens player would add an extra kick. Same thing when Flacco got sacked. A receiver would get a hard hit and an extra shove.
This year, players were helping each other up. I saw a Steeler reach out his hand to help Flacco and Rice up. The Ravens were helping my guys up. Not that I didn’t appreciate the hard hitting and almost violent way of play last season, but this season it was if the guys had grown up and respected each other more. Although I missed the battle of last season, I did appreciate the mature play of this season. Too bad us fans couldn’t be that way…although I guess we are going to be the ones to keep the rivalry going.

  40. Even when the Steelers suck they’re still a .500 or better team….The piece-o-crap Ravens, fans, and anyone who lives in the shithole that is Baltimore will get back to being 3-13—4-12 next season..

  41. all i have to say is: Thanks Jim Caldwell you idiotic a.hole. All you had to do is beat the loser jets and now you put a smile back on the multiple chinned Rex Ryan. Theres no excuse to rest your starters in week 16… AT HOME, atleast apologize to the fans who came to watch that garbage. But i guess he was smart putting his tail between his legs and being scared of playing baltimore or pittsburgh in the playoffs, then its a smart move cause those two teams are hungry.

  42. Steelers fas, calm down, dont get so defensive. The reasons fans think that the officials gift wrapped yesterdays game is the timing of the flags. Look at the interception that Big Ben threw at the end of the game, that was ultimately called back. Was the flaged justified YES, was it ticky tak at that point of the game, YES. But the problem is, the flag wasnt thrown when the illegal contact happened, the officials let it play out, then when the play resulted in a turnover, they throw the flag. Had that pass fallen incomplete, no flag would have been thrown….
As far as the Mason incomplete pass/fumble, yes, it was fumble, do you feel better?
Going back to James Harrison’s epic INT return for a TD in the Super Bowl, there used to be a youtube video that pointed out 6 “blocking in the back” penalties, and 2 holding calls that werent called. This is why fans are jaded when it comes to Steelers getting calls….. Using that Harrison return as an example, there was no need to call the penalty on Suggs. Suggs deserved the penalty for stupidity, but seriously, it had no bearing on the play

  43. @steelermichele – nice post. nice class
@lombardi6 – you are a moron and a classless idiot. last time I checked, Harbaugh has been a coach for 2 years and has been in the playoff hunt both years. Last I remember we were 4 minutes from the SB last year. So get on with your bad self and try to have some class. I realize it’s hard for a miscreant like you, but try anyway. Tiz the season to be jolly.

  44. Hey Florio, when are you going to post on NBC and the NFL spitting in the face of fairness by flexing the Bengals-Jets game? By the time those teams take the field, Cincinnati may have decided to roll over, giving the undeserving Jets a SECOND free pass, thus screwing the Broncos, Steelers and maybe others.
If they had flexed the Ravens-Raiders, that wouldn’t have changed how any team approached Week 17.
Bottom line, money wins out over fairness.

  45. Hey Michael, i edited the last sentence for you, i think you meant it to say the following:
‘So, if you’re MIKE FLORIO THE MORON STEELERS FAN WHO POSES HIMSELF AS AN OBJECTIVE JOUIRNALIST, you need to root for your team to beat the Dolphins. And you need to root for Bill Belichick and Marvin Lewis to go for a win.’

See the 80’s and 90’s for all your steelers dominance Idiot. Look at the history of colts and ravens in bmore and I think you’d have to say Baltimore Football is as good as any other NFL city in this league minus the Marketing SPIN the NFL puts on it’s marquee teams, NY,Cowboys, steelers, Pats, GB.
Have fun watching the RAVENS in the Playoffs this year! Unfortunately for you Ref’s can’t determine outcomes of playoff formulas although I”m sure Dan rooney came back from Ireland so he could talk the league about giving a little extra consideration for teams that play in Western PA!

RAVENS WONT BE THERE LONG…I HEARD THEY ARE FILMING A NEW SEASAME STREET AND FLACCO HAS TO BE THERE FOR HIS ROLE AS BERT!!!

  48. To the Chin:
Why was the flag at the end “ticky tak”? The defender was holding Wallace at least 10 yards down the field and Wallace was the target of Ben’s pass. How was that a ticky tak call? If Wallace wasn’t held, how do you know the timing of the pass would not have been different, Ben might have hit him in stride and the Steelers get a TD? No one knows of course what would have happened. But, the call was clear and not ticky tak, especially at that point in the game. It was an obvious penalty to the target of the pass, not some other receiver that had nothing to do with the play. It was unforturnate for the Ravens, but it was legitimate.
By the way, I love all the divisional games and the rivalries. Nothing like playing the Bengals, Ravens and Browns. Most of the time, a hard fought reasonably close game.

  49. Maybe I saw differently, but it never looked like Mason had control. The ball was moving in his arms the whole time. I’d love to see it again, but it never looked like he tucked it away. It could have been challenged – incomplete passes can be challenged can’t they? If not, they need to change the rules. A billion dollar industry and they have part-time chumps calling the games. Not to mention the game is too fast for geriatric refs. Don’t get me started….

  50. Steelers got a gift W against Minn with a phantom tripping play… I remember that much. Cannot speak for the rest of their games, but if that TD wasn’t turned back, the fluke TD a play later never happens and the Vikings are kicking off to Pittsburg with a lead.
That said, I’m fairly certain that penalties are to be enforced regardless of whether it had bearing on the play (with maybe the exception of pass interferance)… Even though Sugg’s penalty had nothing to do with the play at hand, it was very much a legit call.

well Nate in your theory then we should of been awarded the Holmes Td becus they called a penalty against Heath Miller on that play that also had NOTHING to do with the play.. or doesnt that count?? LOL
AND BIGOX..Tomlin argued that exact fact but they said it was unreviewable play becus they blew the play dead.. so we are all gonna have our opinion but it looked to me like he secured the ball took 3steps n got lit up.

  52. “boysroll” Quit sniveling about officiating!! If a team plays poorly and commits fouls they should get called for it and unless you are blind (or a Steelers hater) you can’t have missed all of the fouls during the Ravens game, the officials didn’t!
Don’t forget that the SB agains the Seahawks had bad calls on both sides of the ball.
One of these decades you guys will get your sixth then you can feel good about yourself again.

  53. I think James Walker said it best on ESPN.com…
“I try to avoid officiating as much as possible, but let’s address the subject. I’m increasingly amazed by how poorly AFC North games are called and Pittsburgh’s 23-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens was another example. Two bad calls stood out: The first was an illegal-contact penalty that negated a Ravens interception at the end of the game. It appeared Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had left the pocket, which would have made contact with the receiver allowable. The second was Baltimore receiver Derrick Mason’s apparent catch and fumble in the fourth quarter. According to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, he considered challenging the call but was told by officials that it would be ruled an incomplete pass. These are calls that can impact an entire season. ”
As a Ravens fan it hurts to admit, but I thought Mason fumbled the ball across the middle. But I also think of few of those flags were unwarranted with the officials just getting an itchy trigger finger. Great game, but the Ravens definitely beat themselves in that one.

  54. Don’t blame the refs. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If you blame the refs for a loss, then you’re not playing good football. A team should never blame the game on a few calls by the refs. Catch a pass, run through a hole, defend the receiver, tackle the runner.
Teams (and fans) spend more time blaming the refs than looking at what they can do better. And I’m not just talking about this game. The refs don’t drop passes. The refs don’t miss tackles. They don’t over/under throw the ball.
Geez, Mason catches that TD pass and this whole discussion doens’t exist because no one complains about the refs when they win a game.
And no, my team doesn’t pay the refs. That’s a stupid argument and anyone who comments that we do should stop watching football and go back to the playground. Grow up and talk serious football. Yeah, the refs may like us more and call a few our way and that’s not fair to the other team, but you know what? Life’s not fair. Get over it. You don’t cry like this around the office when people are favored so don’t do it here.

  55. I have a feeling the Pats and Bengals will tank it just to keep the Steelers out of the playoffs.
As an Eagle fan I hate the Steelers but it would be stupid to let them into the playoffs. They won the whole thing last year and they have almost every player back this year. So if they get into the playoffs they could be dangerous.
I think they would end up falling apart in the playoffs but they have the ability to knock a team like the Bengals or Patriots off first.

  56. This is one of the most misleading headlines I have seen in a while…
So assuming the steelers win, you say the Texans AND the Jets are MOST likely to happen.
Umm, the texans are a 8 point favorite and the jets are a 10 point favorite. That converts to basically a 30% chance (at most) of winning each game.. So for both outcomes to be true, its LESS that 10%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is assuming the Steelers will already win their last game!

  57. HOLY COW PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE QUIT CRYING OVER THE REFS.
As a Steeler Fan I can sit here and moan about bad call after bad call as well as missed call after missed call against the Steelers. The refs have a job to do and fail to get it done over and over, but it goes both ways.
Hey Bill Cower’s Chin–Get over Superbowl XL against Seattle. The refs made horrible calls both ways and both teams played like sh#t. It was about the most boring Superbowl to watch but the Steelers did enough to win. (I think that walrus looking Holmgren is still crying about the game. Wha, Wha, Wha…. I am so glad the Browns are stuck with him now).
To boysroll–Steeler nation is #1 and the Cryboys will never (ever) hold a candle to them. We are the most represented team across the WORLD. Cowboys America’s Team my ass. Wow you beat the Redskins! You guys would never have won Superbowl XXX if it wasn’t for lousy Neil O’Donnell throwing the game. Yea, I said it. He throws two late picks to a no name (Larry Brown???) and makes him the Superbowl MVP. Dallas and Little Bum (Wade) will lose in the playoffs primarily due to the fact Tony Homo is as bad as O’Donnell was.
Desertman–Paying the refs??? Did you really say that? Come on you and anyone else who believe this need to get a life! We all know there are horrible refs out there who make (or miss) many calls but we also all know there is no paying off of refs. The calls go both ways. All of the calls in yesterdays game against the Ravens were legit. I do not care if it was the first or last play of the game. No such thing as a Ticky Tack call. It is either a penalty or it is not. If you can’t do the time don’t do the crime. Just watch James Harrison. He is held on almost every play and we might get two calls a game. The Ravens came out of half time and kicked our butts but they kept shooting themselves in the foot with silly penalties.
    To whodey1982– Who Dey?
DEY STILL DA BUNGELS. DEY STILL DA BUNGELS. DEY STILL DA BUNGELS. DEY STILL DA BUNGELS. DEY STILL DA BUNGELS. DEY STILL DA BUNGELS.
    Need I say more?
All Steeler fans are so accustomed to winning we can’t imagine not going to the playoffs. So many teams and their fans are so jealous of us they cannot stand us.
The bottom line is we choked agains some of the worst teams in the NFL this year but we also beat some of the best. I would love to see us get in the playoffs so you all of the non-believers could eat crow (or is that Raven)?
Can anyone tell me who has six Superbowl Rings!
    Go Steelers.

  58. Just an observation, but……
you ever notice how it’s fans of teams like the Seahawks, Bungles, Cardinals or Ravens that always complain of officiating as the reason for the demise of their respective team, despite the obvious fact that it’s not the officials.
Yet, Steelers fans always tend to be objective (ie. horrible secondary play from Ike/Gay, not enough defensive front pressure, inconsistent play from Timmons, etc.) when explaining losses.
Fans familiar w/ championships tend not to blame officiating as the culprit when losses mount….Rarely, will you see a Steelers (or even Pats fan) chime about officiating, even when it’s warranted (ie. yesterday’s game the Steelers got jobbed by a Mason fumble but it’s part of every game)

  59. Funny how Steeler fans are so defensive over the legitimacy of Super Bowl 40, and try to argue and downplay the grotesquely one-sided officiating that game, but they conveniently ignore how much they pissed and moaned following the Colts playoff game that same postseason.
    You all make me sick.

  60. WVUColumbus. You make an excellent point.
Just like after those very same teams win, they never complain about the officials. They never say “well, we won, but the officials gave us a call here and there.” They always say they played hard and made some good catches and some good blocks.
Funny how the officials are always wrong and make bad calls when your team loses.

  61. I ask again…. Who has six (6) Superbowl Rings?????
We won Super Bowl 40 period. End of story.
    Please quit crying over officiating!!!
It is old, it is sorry, and it is PATHETIC!!!!!!!
As I said, bad calls go both ways. Are you sure your name is not Mike Holmgren. (He will never get over that and now he is going to Cleveland where we can continue to kick the crap out of him and have to listen to him make sorry ass excuses for losing). If you are a winner you should not have to rely one calls from the refs to win you just find ways to win.
And who won the Colts game that post season. Must have been the team with six rings.
If you don’t know the answer it is the PITTSBURGH STEELERS.
    Talk about making me sick!
Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha, Wha.
    What a bunch of crybabies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. If we are talking about the Jets, Steelers, Texans, and Ravens making the playoffs, it just shows how weak the AFC is…………all of these teams have weaknesses that will eventually be exposed in the playoffs. As a Steelers fan who has seen a team rise from the 6th seed to raise Lombardi i truly believe anything can happen in the playoffs.
But, waiting in the super bowl will be a much better team than the Seahawks LOL! The NFC is stacked from top to bottom this year.
For all those bragging about making the playoffs, no one is impressed. Whats the point of making the playoffs when you don’t win it all? It just sets you up for a bigger disappointment and worse positioning in the draft.
    Enjoy your playoff failure.
ps…i don’t think the Steelers deserve to make the playoffs after losing to the Bears (by a missed field goal), Bengals 2x’s, Chiefs, Raiders, and Browns.

  63. Hey you PIT fans……For Steelers to make playoffs:
    Win+HOU loss+NYJ loss
    Win+HOU loss+BAL loss
    Win+NYJ loss+BAL loss+DEN loss
    That’s it. Quit whining.
    To confirm: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/playoffscenario?algorithm=custom&15=50051401&16=15145151
If NE wins, CIN would much rather see teams they beat twice: BAL,PIT vs teams they lost to: NYJ-DEN-HOU in the playoffs. Furthermore, they would not want a losing streak against a team they play twice in a row/give that team a confidence boost right before they play them the very next week, nor to lose in prime time. On top of that, the Jets may beat the paste out of Cinci… and Cinci sure won’t want more of that in the first round. Cinci has no idea how tough the Jets are against them…. can you imagine laying down in a game and not determining how strong your very next opponent really is? No way. Fight them hard, and if they can beat your starters, you play harder to keep them away. Finally, the CIN coaches don’t care about division teams missing the playoffs from spite. Resting starters, making money, or potential schedule is considered at best.
If NE wins, CIN is not going to lose a potential 10+ million dollars AFC championship host by laying down to the Jets.

  64. Cincy and NE are going to tank in order to prevent the most dangerous wild card team from getting in the playoffs…Indy tanked for the same reason…Peyton don’t want no taste of Pittsburgh.”
    Spygate!! Douchebag

  65. @SteelersRAM, how did your beloved Steelers fair against those Bungles this year? Must suck to have to hear about it all year too. Here’s your WHA WHA WHA gift wrapped right back to you. Tell your QB to go eat another Twinkie.
@President Charlie, if those team make the playoffs, it shows how weak the Steelers really are. You might want to add some major reorganization for 2010 if you need Polamalu that bad! (For the record, guy is a hell of player in my book, not that it means much.) I was feeling so good about the Bengals this year until the Steelers and the Ravens turned out to be mediocre at best, kind of dampens those wins for Cincy!

  66. WhoPlaysWhere has to realize with those two wins the Bungals are still behind in the series against the Steelers 53-28. The funny thing is you guys beat us twice and you think you just won the Superbowl. Did I mention how many rings we have before??? I believe the answer was six. How may do your beloved convicts (sorry, I mean Bungals) have? A BIG FAT ZERO. Why does everyone hate and want to beat the Steelers? Because we consistently produce winning teams and everyone wants to knock off the champ. Yea we will have our ups and downs but I will take the Steelers over the Bungals any day!!!
ps. Congratulations on your Superbowl win this year.

  67. Re: Polamalu
I hear a lot of people busting on my Steeler fan buddies to quit whining about Polamalu.
The Steelers lost 5 games this year by only 3 points, and the other two by one touchdown or less. So how many points is the number one safety in the league worth?
I say Polamalu is worth a lot more to the Steelers than 3 points per game, which makes it easy to see that missing him from the game or not having him 100% can account for every Steelers loss.
On top of that, I know I wish whenever Cinci plays the Steelers that Polamalu is out, and so does every one of you when it’s your team playing them. Heck, any fan would love Polamalu on their team. He’s by far the best, and he’s not a dirty player. Anyone that says a team should be able to win with a key player like him missing is being absurd.
Also, in my above post I meant to say if “NE LOSES” in the last sentence or it doesn’t make sense….. Cinci isn’t going to give up a chance at hosting the AFC Championship by losing on purpose to the Jets if NE loses early Sun.

  68. @SteelersRAM,
Yeah, you mention it everytime the Steelers suck ass. It seems to be the most common comeback after any Steelers loss.
For some reason the moderator chose to not include my comments about you reverting to your rings. I foreshadowed it the best, the only Steeler comeback. You’re like the studdering fat kid on the playground who gets picked last and comes back with “Well, well, well……at least we have six rings.” I also talked about how you probably bought the Sports Illustrated limited edition copy and the plastic football for each of those championships and have them on display in your trailer by one of the three rivers!
Why everyone wants to beat the Steelers is we love to see you cry after a loss. And we love the silence that comes with those loses by clowns like you.
Try the present tense, Steelers have 2 wins in the AFC North in 2009 and are most likely not going to the playoffs. Just like 2006, shoot your wad and then suck balls the following year.
Keep riding your fat quarterback to an early exit come January. If Tomlin was smart, its time to draft a quarterback, research shows heart disease and heart attacks are more predominent in overweight individuals.

  69. All you people commenting about the refs in the
steelers games, if you have NFL network then
watch on wednesdays and see if any of these calls
are brought up when they talk to the head of nfl
officiating. I’ll tell you calls that aren’t brought
up, and if you don’t believe me watch the next steeler game,#92 James Harrison is held almost every time he rushes the QB ,so the way I see it the refs still owe us a bunch of calls. As for the bungles and bill bellicheats patriots,I’ll guarentee
that one of them if not both of them will lose their
games just because they don’t want to be faced with the possibilty of meeting the steelers in the
playoffs(refer to the colts this past sunday)you can’t tell me they didn’t want to go for the perfect season. When was the last time manning missed a game due to injury, they are scared of the steelers.REMEBER 05′.. FIRST 6TH SEED EVER!!!!!!!!!!!……….GOT SIX ? THE BURGH DOES.

  70. boysroll says:
squeelers suck. officiating won them another game just like the poorly officiated game in the SB against the seahawks. that game yesterday was one of the worst officiated games against the ravens I have ever seen. It lost the game for them and I hate to see the refs control outcomes of games.
    ____________________________________
Funny how every time the Steelers play, these comments surface shortly thereafter. Something needs to be done about this, it’s getting out of hand.

  71. I think its funny that Steeler fans are saying that teams are tanking so the mediocre steeler team does not make it in the playoffs.
Cincy beat you twice already, coupled with losses to KC and Oakland…do you really think other teams are scared of you?
I would welcome beating your a$$ again

  72. Hey, I was rooting for pit over the dirty ravens to see Cinci win the division, even though Cinci did it on their own.
And normally, I hate it when the Steelers get ref’s calls.
But all of the calls against the dirty ravens were as clear cut as you can get all day, boysroll. On the last defensive holding call, for the game, the dirty ravens corner was holding onto the pit receiver for nearly two seconds with both arms around him about 15 yards deep. To top that off, on the same play, the dirty ravens safety was also holding the pit tight end in the middle of the field!!!…. I actually thought the flag was against the safety and I couldn’t tivo rewind or hear it in the bar I was in. (They had the cinci volume on, and no sound on for the pit game) I only realized it was the dirty raven corner when the camera kept on him for the next few seconds.
Earlier in the game, I saw the replay of a dirty raven corner pushing a pit receiver into the ground from the back while diving for an interception….. no flag on a blatant interference. The dirty ravens got away with one on that play, so quit whining about the refs. The only blown call I saw the whole game was the no call on the dirty raven interception.

  73. Not sure if any Steeler Haters watch other games around the league but every away game broadcast begins with “There is a sea of yellow here today folks”. As a born and bred Pittsburgher it’s uncanny to see half of every stadium we enter filled with Steeler fan’s. Can any other team in the league say this? Be honest. As for the 6 Lombardi’s being gifts from the ref’s are you effin serious? Anybody who says that has no idea what grit and determination it takes to win one Lombardi let alone 6. If you did you would pay some serious homage. People need to learn some gridiron frickin edicate.

  74. @WhoplaysWhere;
It seems you have an irrational hatred of fat people, possibly projecting the image of your abusive overweight alcoholic sow of a mother onto others. You seem smart enough to realize that this is unhealthy behavior. Perhaps over the holidays as you watch your mother gorge herself with a cornicopia of calories, you may realize that you are the reason she is the way she is. If you would have been shot down the toilet like the knuckle children your father had wanted, you wouldn’t have ruined her life. By the way, we still have 6 sets of rings…

  75. @ whodey1982 says:

…. but THIS YEAR we were better than Pittsburgh. Consistently. All year. So, as opposed to reminding everyone why NOBODY likes the Steelers, eat a piece of humble pie. You have no reason to speak at this point.
First of all you ignorant POS, check out these facts and then perhaps you’ll realize why you can’t handle the truth, nor the reality that you root for a POS organization that will get to the playoffs for only the 2nd time in 19 years. In fact, this is pretty much close to the number of .500 or better seasons for the lowly bengirls franchise you JA.
Here are the facts that make you so jealous, yet as described by your very own POS journalist in the Cincinnati Enquirer before your 2nd win vs Pgh this season, all you ever want to be is just like the Steelers. Now, let’s see why you hypocritical donkey gluteus:
    Good Guys (Pittsburgh)
    Winning Seasons since 1970: 28
    500 Seasons since 1970: 2
    Sub-500 Seasons since 1970: 9
    Playoff Appearances since 1970: 24
Playoff Record: 31-19 (50 total games)
    AFC Championship Games: 14
    Super Bowls: 7
    Super Bowl Wins: 6
    Cellar Dwellers (Bengirls)
    Winning Seasons since 1970: 12
    500 Seasons since 1970: 6
    Sub-500 Seasons since 1970: 21
    Playoff Appearances since 1970: 8
Playoff Record: 5-8 (13 total games)
    AFC Championship Games: 2
    Super Bowls: 2
    Super Bowl Wins: 0
And for the final stat you dumb gluteus, here’s why you and all of your other jealous, envious, POS bengirls fans don’t like the truth:
Head to Head Stats (incl playoffs):
    Steelers 48 — Bengirls 32
Head to Head Stats (last decade):
    Steelers 15 — Bengirls 6
    Regular season sweeps:
    Steelers 15 — Bengirls 8 (5 in the 80s)
So, to summarize you POS chump … STFU and just focus on rooting for your team, instead of trying to bash the franchise and fans you wish you were.
