Week 16 Morning Aftermath: Bengals face a dilemma

Some think that the Colts opted to lay down against the Jets on Sunday because the Colts would rather see the Jets roll into Lucas Oil Stadium in January — and not the Steelers.

The Cincinnati Bengals might be asking themselves a similar question in Week 17.

Four years ago, the Bengals played in their only postseason game since 1990.  As champions of the AFC North and the third seed in the postseason, the Bengals hosted the sixth seed, which happened to be the Steelers.

So the Steelers tore up Carson Palmer’s knee and then knocked the Bengals out of the playoffs, a week before upending the Colts in the divisional round.

This time around, the Bengals can avoid seeing the Steelers in January by resting their starters against the Jets, who’ll nail down one of the wild-card berths by beating the Bengals.

Indeed, two of the three Pittsburgh paths to the playoffs depend on the Jets losing.

As explained by the league office on Monday, the Steelers get in with a win and:  (1) a Texans loss or tie and a Jets loss or tie; (2) a Texans loss or tie and a Ravens loss or tie; or (3) a Jets loss or tie, a Ravens loss or tie, and a Broncos loss or tie.

Since Baltimore plays the Raiders and the Broncos host the Chiefs, the easiest option is No. 1, and it depends on the Jets losing.

So if the Jets beat the Bengals, Cincinnati won’t have to worry about being bounced again by those bullies from the ‘Burgh.

More importantly, the scar on Palmer’s left knee also won’t start throbbing like the lightning bolt on Harry Potter’s forehead.

  1. There is no way that the Bengals would try to avoid playing the Steelers. The Bengals would unleash hell on the Steelers again.

  2. Seriously, I don’t know if the Bengals would rather see the Jets than the Steelers. The Jets have a much tougher defense and their offense will be pulling out all of the stops just to win. That gives the Bengals an advantage in a rematch, but the Jets defense is more worrisome than the Steelers defense. The last time the Bengals played the Steelers, they pretty much dictated the tempo of the game and had a clear advantage throughout the contest. It was a close score, but it didn’t feel that way while watching it.
I’m not sure which the Bengals would rather see, but as a Bengals fan hoping they move on to the second round, I’d feel more comfortable seeing the Steelers than I would the Jets.

  3. I wouldn’t want Pittsburgh in the playoffs if I were Cincy…..the refs would do everything they could to ensure a Pittsburgh victory, they usually do.

  4. “Some think that the Colts opted to lay down against the Jets on Sunday because the Colts would rather see the Jets roll into Lucas Oil Stadium in January — and not the Steelers.”
Who thinks this? Name one person? If you think it, write it. Stop the speculating/making stuff up. It just detracts from the stories on this web site. Just write the story without the make-believe.

  5. I want to beat the Jets and go into the playoffs with some momentum. The best way to “rest the starters” is to jump all over NYJ in the first half and get a big lead.
The Steelers are just as banged-up as the Bengals, so I don’t know why we should fear Pittsburgh.

  6. Its more important that the Bengals play well in week 17. The Jets, the Steelers, it doesn’t matter if they keep playing the way they are currently. Beating a solid, hungry team on the road, fighting for their playoff lives would mean more than not having to see the Steelers. IMO

  7. Florio’s “Steeler Fan Boy” drivel is almost embarrassing. Basically reveling in Palmer’s knee injury four years ago on a cheap shot? Grow up Florio. Or at least actually be funny. I’d take one of the two. Or at least actually do a good job of making predictions. I’d take one of three.

  8. If the Bengals have the choice:
    1. Rest your starters, get a free scout game against the subpar NYJ before playing them at home in the playoffs, and last but not least, stick it to the Steelers
    or
    2. Risk injury for a meaningless game and play a rival team for the third time in a season…
Which one do you think they take?

  9. All I have to say is gforce89 is an ass whose mother probably dropped him on his head one too many times when he was a baby. That old cry-baby excuse of the officials helping the Steelers is not only old, it is ridiculous. Grow the hell up.

  10. Wow Florio…you seem awfully proud of the fact that the Steelers laid a cheap shot on Palmer back in the ’05-’06 season.

  11. Florio, can you do a better job covering your sour grapes about this season?
I would much rather see the Steelers than any other team save for the Broncos. Keep telling yourself the Bengals are afraid of the Steelers, whatever makes you sleep better at night. What a joke.
Also, thank goodness we have two good backup SAMs, and double for getting Crocker and Peko back, Nelson is awful in coverage.

  12. I don’t think the Bengals care who they face in the playoffs. I think they’ll just try to make sure they’re in the best shape to play. I think guys like Crocker and Peko will be given an extra week to heal. I think the ‘walking wounded’ guys like Tank Johnson may be given the game off (or really limited playtime). I think young guys like Andre Smith, Bernard Scott, and Shaun Smith (at least, young within this defense) will be given more snaps. I think they play to win, while remaining conscious of needing to be healthy for the playoffs.
I think the Bengals will sit some guys this week. I think they’d sit the same guys even if losing meant facing the Steelers.

  13. Great new layout for Morning After, much better.
Chargers are rolling and will be tough to beat. Colts are a great team, but interesting to see how the loss affects them.
Pats are the Pats and BB should have them ready in the playoffs, will get one home game before going to Indy or SD, Pats should prefer Indy.
Bengals, Jets and Ravens will be happy to be there, the Ravens might be the most dangerous if the Bengals don’t find their groove. Top 3 seeds are the ones to watch, others are just fodder.

  14. I think the Bengals should play Palmer the entire game…Jordan Palmer. Screw the Steelers. Not because we are afraid of them but because it’s the Steelers. So screw em. Sit anyone that has reported a boo-boo in the last month and get them healed. Start Larry Johnson, Jerome Simpson, Andre Smith…hell, start the tackleing dummies. Get a sneak peak at the Jets and more importantly…screw the Steelers.

  15. “All I have to say is gforce89 is an ass whose mother probably dropped him on his head one too many times when he was a baby. That old cry-baby excuse of the officials helping the Steelers is not only old, it is ridiculous. Grow the hell up.”
Tuscany, did you watch Superbowl 40? Just curious
    BuckFigBen…very well said

  16. Shinsnake, you might want to check your facts (at least you didn’t spew them w/ rage against Florio and other posters)… in the previous game, the Bengals didn’t dictate anything. They were outgained 80-61 on the ground, and total yards (226 to 218). Very similar story in the 1st game of they played against each other–which PIT dominated in time of possession and yards. Turnovers and missed field goals by Reed decided the 1st game, and the 2nd game was about as close of a finish as you could get.
Not sure either team is afraid of the other.

  17. I love it! In the eye of a Steeler fan since I was 7, REVENGE is our name! Bring on the Bengals! Every football team member has done a cheap shot or two…..Sorry Bengal fan, it was not a cheap shot considering they knew each other! Your just upset we rule the nest when it comes to Superbowl RINGS!!!! Our team is solid and are entitled to a rough season to keep things real! We are down this year and that is okay. We still rock!!!

  18. As a Bengal fan the only team of the 4 or 5 possible first round match ups that I really dont want to see is Houston. They have had the Bengals number for a few years and the Bengals dont do well against pass happy teams.
    PS
FIRE BOB BRATKOWSKI!!!! He is so boring and predictable its nauseating to watch the Bengals offense. No team does less with the talent that the Bengals offense has. Im just sayin! Ha

  19. I’m not a Steeler fan or hater so I really don’t care about this but I did find it interesting that on the way home yesterday while listening to ESPN or Fox Sports radio, one of the commentators, sorry don’t remember his name, suggested the zebras were a little “home” oriented yesterday. He pointed out several calls & no calls that favored teh Steelers.
Now I’m a Packer fan (one of the most penalized teams in the game) & don’t believe in the “biased ref” junk but I did find that interesting. One would think that since the refs have this “pro Steelers” aura that they would try to do everything to prove the opposite.

  20. Tuscany must be either the typical blind Pit fan or have no clue as to the rules in the NFL. Yes, I know, Pit will constantly bitch about the playoff game vs IND a few years ago (and rightfully so), but come on, the refs handed them the trophy against SEA a few years ago, a blown call vs MIN kept them from nailing down a victory this year and no team has more missed holding penalties.
Stealers is the more appropriate name.

  21. Even if the Steelers dont get in..the Bengals wont go far anyway..Lol it is cute tho to see people in Ohio get all excited.. hahahhaa
Lol @the Steelers having the refs on their side.. have people seriously ever watched a Steeler game without their homer glasses on?? They really need too.Ive seen bad calls go both ways in the game, well more like MISSED calls..funny how people only complain when it favors Pittsburgh.I have never seen a non Steeler fan complain about Harrison being held on almost every play..NEVER.
So the Steelers tore up Carson Palmer’s knee and then knocked the Bengals out of the playoffs, a week before upending the Colts in the divisional round.WOW U MAKE SOUND LIKE THIS WAS INTENTIONAL..WOW FKN WOW!!! What a JOKE!
Dont fear Bengal fans ,if u face the Jets in the playoffs,Faneca is there and he knows how it is to beat the Bengals consistently 🙂
I do love tho Bengals are worried about the Steelers instead of concentrating on the playoffs..lol WE LOVE IT! I dont know tho from what i seen of yesterdays game, the Bungholes may need to play their starters for practice.Dont know if you want your starting qb going into a playoff game coming off a 17-25 for 139yrds performance, but then again it is Marvin Lewis.LOL

  22. Not for fear of the Steelers – they already beat them twice – but to rest their starters. They are already down 5 Defensive Starters and 1 Offensive Starter and his next 2 backups (TE), C Henry etc. Benson, Tank Williams, Bernard Scott and Palmer are all playing injured.
You can’t keep losing players and expect to win.

  23. Come on Mongo, we all know that Bill Belly and the Pats are know for STEELING PLAYS AND SO ON! It’s nice to know that you think the only team in the NFL that gets calls favored to them is the STEELERS. Should I send a box of terrible towels for you to cry on!!??? I will at no charge. Then you can wipe your mouth of all the crap that is coming out of it! :O) I love smash mouth football! HA HA I say all this with kindness and not hate! :O) Happy Holidays!

  24. More importantly, the scar on Palmer’s left knee also won’t start throbbing like the lightning bolt on Harry Potter’s forehead.
much like Florio’s c@#* starts to throb whenever he thinks of Big Ben’s Little Bennie.

  25. You guys crack me up. I guess I will agree that today is Monday and you will try years from now to tell me it is actually Tuesday. No matter what, you will see what you want to see. Just glad I live in Pittsburgh where I USUALLY see great football and experiene the playoffs. Some of you fans should be so lucky.
    Peace.

  26. HeHateMe.
Get YOUR facts straight. They dont add the 98 yards B Scott took it to your house. I think you led the game for all of about 7 minutes.

case in point : Pitt 23 Ravens 20….refs handed this game to Pitt….unreal….

  28. Steeler-lady, you’re a perfect example of why women weren’t allowed in Augusta (if you even understand what I’m talking about without googling it). Nobody wants to see the word “cute” or LOL here. This is a message board for people that actually know sports…not for people who happen to watch football because their husband dominates the remote control.
“I dont know tho from what i seen of yesterdays game, the Bungholes may need to play their starters for practice.”
I’ll leave the “from what I seen,” alone with the exception of letting you know that your grammar is ridiculous (but expected, considering you ARE from Pittsburgh). However, you do remember that the Bengals actually BEAT the Chiefs, right? Unlike your precious Steelers.
    Tuscany,
It wouldn’t matter if the Steelers won the superbowl every year, you still shouldn’t be happy to live in Pittsburgh. It’s a sxxthole bro. So congratulations, you get to raise your kids in a filthy slum, live in a town filled with white trash, all so you can “USUALLY see great football.” Awesome!!!

  29. don’t know who -or why- someone threw that Jordan Palmer link into my last comment but whoever’s moderating needs to quit screwing around and keep it professional.

  30. As a Bengals fan, I am just happy we made the playoffs and that one of the two sets of tickets the club sent to my house two weeks ago will actually be used.
From there though…….I want the Steelers at home to get a little redemption from 2005, but I also think there is a more logical chance of the Bengals beating the Jets in PBS come playoff weekend.
I wold love to see the Bengals go back to SD for a rematch. That was one of the best games I have seen the Bengals play in years and would appreciate another crack at the Chargers, who are playing fantastic football right now.
So many possibilities between the #3 and #4 seed, who gets the #6 seed, and for the love of God, someone tell me which seeds play on Saturday and which play on Sunday!!!

  31. @Steelers6,
    you said “We Still Rock”
this is the definition of the word MONGO, please use caution in the future when using the term!

    Ok, THIS was histerical.

  34. Whodey1982 shame on you for being rude!! Get a life for slaming people! Each city in the US has a unique character. Maybe we should ship you to Iraq and put you on the front line!!!! My uncles and grandfathers would teach you a thing or two!

  35. whodey1982a:
Your argument is the perfect example of why ad hominem attacks are completely useless in trying to make a decent point (if you even understand what I’m talking about without googling it).
Over on CFT there is a story about the first female ref at a bowl game. She happens also to have aspirations of making it to the NFL. Wonder what all the misogynist crybabies have to say about that.
If I had to guess, I would think most teams would prefer to play against the Jets rather than the Steelers in the playoffs. Everyone knows what the Jets are capable of (mediocrity), but the Steelers are much bigger threat to snag an upset win.

    BuckFigBen…very well said
    1. I’m guessing you didn’t watch that game with an unbiased eye. It may not have been the best called game, but no calls that were undeserved were made that had any bearing on the outcome of the game. Go back and watch again. Then get back to us on these alleged calls.
    2. BuckFigBen – really? Seriously? 3rd grade playground stuff there. Is that the best you can do? How about trying this for a new name “Ihaveadeepseatedjealouslyof thesteelersandtheirquarterbackandtheir6count’em6superbopwlringswhichisevidentbythewayIfinditnecessarytousechildishnamestovoicemyopinionabouthem”
Very cute. LOL (for you, whodeyloser)

  37. Steelers6…I’m having a problem making the correlation between Pittsburgh being a garbage city, your family, and the Iraq war. What does one have to do with the other? And why would I go to Iraq on “the front lines.” If you want to compare the safety, stability and quality of life in Iraq to Pittsburgh, that’s on you. I just think you should apologize to Iraq when you’re finished.
And SDZC, wow! I have no problem with “knowledgeable” women, or people for that matter, coming on here and making valid points. I just have a low tolerance for morons. I couldn’t make fun of her for being from Pittsburgh, because that would be rhetorical. So the next logical angle would be that, because she never had the opportunity to EVER play the game, her knowledge is probably a little less than par. Follow that up by the fact that she had a completely ridiculous, opinion filled article with the likes of “WOW FKN WOW” in it, and, yeah, I’m going to take my shots.
I have no problem with equal rights, equal opportunity, equal pay, anything. Am I all that fond of women police officers? No. Do I want a woman firefighter busting down the door and trying to carry me out of a burning building? No. Do I think that because women have NEVER played football that their knowledge of football across the board is lacking? Absolutely. So it’s not an ad hominem attack, it’s actually extremely relevant. So STFU SDZC, and go knit me a sweater before I start telling you how to properly shave your legs.

  38. Whoday – It wouldn’t matter if the Steelers won the Superbowl every year, you still shouldn’t be happy to live in Pittsburgh. It’s a sxxthole bro. So congratulations, you get to raise your kids in a filthy slum, live in a town filled with white trash
Can we all guess who never gets out of his home much? Who relies on 75 year old photos of a smoky downtown to form an opinion? If I was so dim, I would assume the entire southwest was cow towns with saloons on dirt streets and a sheriff tryin’ to form a posse to go get some rustlers.
Pittsburgh – Named most livable city – twice
USA Today named the view from Mt. Washington the most beautiful place in the country second only to Sedona (thats in AZ), is known as one of the top High Tech cities in the country, world renowned for its hospitals and cutting edge transplant surgeries, 2 top Universities, is in the top 25 nationally for per capita college educated adults, one of the best values for housing and cost of living, 6th best city for relocation a family (to, not from) and even has been ranked among the top 10 cleanest cities. Its only negative is poor air quality – but with it no longer being a mill town, that poor air is obviously moving in with the air currents from the west… from Ohio…
And it would matter if the Steelers won the Superbowl every year. It would just fuel your bitter, jealous rage… who dey? Even though we lost twice to you this year (an anomaly) history tells us that We Dey!

  39. Actually, I want to put you on the front line in front of the enemy and teach you a think or two about respect and respecting people in general! I do not in anyway Mr. Misinterpret everything wrong in what I was saying…. again pathetic little human in no way do I have to apoligize to the Iraq people! I bet you live in a trailer down by the river! You should anyway!

  40. I couldn’t make fun of her for being from Pittsburgh, because that would be rhetorical.
Wow, that doesn’t even come close to making sense…
Is it possible the professor meant to say redundant?

  41. “I have no problem with equal rights, equal opportunity, equal pay, anything. Am I all that fond of women police officers? No. Do I want a woman firefighter busting down the door and trying to carry me out of a burning building? No. Do I think that because women have NEVER played football that their knowledge of football across the board is lacking? Absolutely.”
Obviously a misogynist who didn’t get enough love from momma.

  42. And Tk1966…while I may not have received enough love from MY momma, I certainly did from yours. Again, I’ve been to Pittsburgh quite a few times…I just never mentioned why.

  43. Really whoday? Thats the best you can do? Something so obvious? Unimaginative? Tell you what, I’ll give you a free pass, and let you try again…. but no more do-overs after this, ok cupcake?

  44. Ok, lets see how many legit points I can make. Kimo made a clean hit on Palmer. It wasn’t late, and it wasn’t blocked. That’s the offensive lines job.
Kimo also stood over Palmer (as they are friends and he was on the bengals the year prior if i remember correctly), tell medical personal came out to treat Palmer.
Pittsburgh is by no means the team they were in 2005. Cinci is clearly better then they were in that same year as demonstrating it by sweeping the division. (Much like Pitt did last year).
The Jets and Pittsburgh are playing horrible ball, I don’t think either is a large threat if they make it into the playoffs.
However…. last time Pittsburgh was a 6th seeded team, and the only time in playoff history, did a 6th seed go on to win a Superbowl. So you never know, any given Sunday.
San Diego is most likely to upset the Colts, however I still like the Colts this year in to win the superbowl. I also for some reason like Green Bay as a wildcard or perhaps the Eagles in the Superbowl for the NFC. Eagles are playing great ball, but they are known to blow the big one. Green Bay in a dome is very dangerous. They play better indoors then the actual indoor players. Don’t count them out.
Last but not least, you can say whatever you want about any team. The last time the Raiders beat the Steelers, the Steelers won the superbowl. So your points are pretty much worthless.
Also most Steelers fan’s don’t mind the Bengals. Bengals are usually respectable to the Steelers and vice versa. Same goes for the Browns. It’s Baltimore that are usually the nasty fans.
No team in here has any bragging rights until the last game of the season, until then the Steelers are in fact still the defending champions till they hand over the trophy to the next winner. So if Cinci loses in week one, guess a lot of people are going to look like idiots then.

  45. Don’t bother with whodey1982. He is obviously not used to winning so he resorts to name calling, woman bashing and fear driven jealousy. He is not from Ohio because if he was, he would be aware that the largest amount of white trash in the USA resides in Southeastern Ohio. Have you been there chief? Good god, those people are one step above the a** raping a**holes from Deliverance. Whodey1982 come back to us when you can actually complete a sentence, and understand that you and your franchise will never have the same class as the Steeler’s Organization. Douche bag!

  46. The difference between arguing and debating? People become petty, childish, and immature when they start calling others names, that’s arguing. When one discusses the issues then backs up their side of the issue with facts instead of vitriol rhetoric, that is debate. whodey1982a you may want to google (or any other search engine you choose) those words that you don’t understand.

  47. @whodey1982, keep up the good work, both the woman and tk are garbage at best and struggle to understand common tasks, let alone football. Take for instance, the grammar used by the steelerlady. Research (if I gave a shit to look it up like tk pulling out a USA Today article) would show that she most likely is a city bus driver, a garbage women, or a welcoming agent at Walmart (jazzed that one up for ya so it wasn’t sexist) as he dialect is not but a giddy little 3rd grade level.
Our good buddy tk was so worked up by your comments, he couldn’t put a whole post together, he had to split it up in to three separate post. Each of these posts were written in between him smoking his Camels, peeing outside, and finding more Mohawk Grenades as the Mr. T commercials point out about the World of Warcraft or whatever.
As for Steeler fans in general, we get that you have six rings, I am sure each of you have six signature Sport Illustrated Covers and the fake plastic ball with the team signatures on it. Each of you have dedicated a special corner of your trailer to them. Before you say it, I also know that the Bengals have no rings…..still hoping for a playoff win, its been almost 20 years you know?
Here’s what we do have…………….the present and the future.
    1. Present – 2-0 against the Burgh this year. How sweet it is. We also have fingernails as we are not biting ours off hoping half the NFL loses and we get a playoff spot.
    2. Future – More heated rivalry games to come between our two team and a continuing AFC North doormat as the “Mistake on the Lake” has set themselves back a few more years with the hiring of the Walrus.
TK, when you’re looking up articles, you should also mention that Cincinnati is one of the most benevolent cities in America and also has one of the lowest Swine Flu rates according to Men’s Health. Oh, sorry, Men’s Health is a magazine where Men can find an alternate lifestyle to breathing in ore dust and eat sandwiches topped with french fries……..my bad cuzzy!

  48. @ whodey1982o
I see you posting on every single topic concerning the steelers. How many years have you been waiting for this “magical” 9-7 season so you can come out of your lair and talk dirt? And please don’t down the Steel City dude, you are from Cincy. Part of the worst state in the U.S., with the ugliest women and the worst drivers. You regularly compete for best statewide football team with a college squad. Most years, the Buckeyes would beat you. You’re best player changed his name to a spanish number. Please think of next year and save yourself the embarassment. You won nine games. You have ZERO chance to win the Super Bowl. Just shut up.

  49. You Squeeler and Bungholes fan are cute. I can feel the love all the way from Kansas City.
Yup, I was there in-person to see the Chiefs (my 2nd favorite team) smoke the far superior Steelers in Arrowhead, I saw grown men using “Terrible Towls” to dry tears, and I’ve never seen so many authentic jerseys in my life! You Pittsburgh fan have some serious cash….. too bad it won’t be spent on playoff tickets 😦
Anyway I would like to get back to the topic of article. Yes I will soon be able to add the Bengals to my Christmas Card list (right next to the Colts) for laying down for us this week.
But it really doesn’t matter because the Jets WILL beat the Bungholes in Cin City. Hell, the Chiefs nearly did it sunday! Thomas Jones is going to run up and down the field on your “defense” and Revis will have Stinko on lockdown.
I have to hand it to you Florio, that Harry Potter crack was pretty good.

Wasnt one of the biggest World leader meetings held in the burgh lately?? Do you know why? Perhaps you should do some research ya damnself.Pittsburgh is now one of the cleaniest cities in the country.
Since i believe you are a tad SLOW.. i did the research for you…..In 2007, Forbes magazine named Pittsburgh the 10th cleanest city, [14] and in 2008 Forbes listed Pittsburgh as the 13th best city for young professionals to live. [15] The city is consistently ranked high in livability surveys. In 2007, Pittsburgh was named “America’s Most Livable City” by Places Rated Almanac. [16] Furthermore, in 2009, Pittsburgh was named most livable city in the United States and 29th-most-livable city worldwide by The Economist. [17]
heres the website for ya too.. slow one…http://wapedia.mobi/en/Pittsburgh

  53. The Jets have a far better defense than Pit does this year, esp with Polamalu still out. But Pit is a different team with Polamalu in the lineup, and he’s getting close.
Regardless of defensive strength though, I don’t think there’s any question that a defense would rather feast on Mark Sanchez than face Roethlisberger. Unless Roethlisberger had a defense on par with the Lions, the better matchup would be versus Sanchez and a stronger defense.
That said, the Bengals won’t/shouldn’t roll over and let the Jets win. Any winning team has a mindset that they’ll beat whoever’s on the field with them, schedule be darned. But they should rest their injured in a game with little meaning (having a shot at a bye week would have meaning, but #3 vs #4 seed? not so much) and maybe even pull starters a la the Colts by halftime.
