Report: Chiefs, Crennel do a deal

Agent Joe Linta recently told the Kansas City Star that, if the Chiefs were to make an offer to Romeo Crennel, he would accept it.

Apparently, the offer has come.

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that the Chiefs and Crennel have struck a deal that will make Crennel the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Per Nick Wright of KCSP, an announcement currently is expected to come on Friday — and current defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast is not expected to be fired.

Coach Todd Haley recently told Wright that the Chiefs wanted to hire Crennel last year, but health issues prompted Crennel to take some time off.

The move gives the Chiefs the two coordinators — Crennel and Charlie Weis — who left the Patriots after winning their third Super Bowl in four years.

  1. Hiring Weis and Crennel is just want the KC restaurant businesses needed during this recession.

  2. This should be interesting to see if this group of coaches makes a differents. You can’t say they don’t have name recognition…for whatever that’s worth.

  3. So much for this bogging down huh? With some of the Chiefs personel, they may be similar to my Skins and be a real player in 2 years. Only time will tell.

  4. Interesting to see if the trifecta of Pioli, Crennel, and Weis will undermine Todd Haley’s position. It’s kinda like he’s crashed a party that he wasn’t invited to.

La Canfora reports the Chiefs are working on the firing of Pendergast
It has been widely known that the job was offered to Crennel last year and he decided to have hip surgery instead of coach in 09. Haley did not “recently tell Nick Wright” anything except “get me some coffee”

  6. Should be a “Tony Dungy Rule” in the NFL…….before you hire a fat GM, Head Coach, or Assistant coach, you must interview at least one skinny 0ne for that respective position.

  7. “…current defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast is not expected to be fired.”
Then what role would he fill, co-defensive coordinator?

  8. Unfortunate that most of the commentary here is limited to fat jokes. Todd Haley proved last year that he could get the organization in better shape, so Crenell and Weis should be looking forward to a “better fit” here in KC this year.
On a serious note, last year no one was really inspired by the Clancy Pendergast move on defense. Now it looks like there are two strong coordinators that Haley can delegate to so that he can concentrate on the many other aspects of being a head football coach. The timing is excellent as well, with the off season here for the Chiefs. If Haley can use his personnel background to hit on a key free agent or two and one or two solid, impact draft choices, and if egos and personalities don’t conflict within the Chiefs’ management, this team will be poised for a surprising turnaround next year. And unlike the last good Chiefs team to take the field under Vermeil, this team will be young.

  9. Maybe places like PFT should have some version of the Rooney Rule, force guys like Florio through some of the process the NFL has to follow.
KC will never be like NE for many reasons, including the cheating that was caught.

==> the Chiefs will revolutionice the NFL and replace the waterguy with the meatguy. I mean who needs water, gatorade and crap? but the coaching staff will need a lotta beef.
If catching Sanchez eating a HotDog was a scandal, wait until you catch Crennel eating a toasted elephant and having 3 coors.
Wow i hope Sabel will sneak in some wires
Crennel: “i swear, if you miss one more tackle, i ll eat you”

  14. Congradulations to the Chiefs and their fans.
Now if you can get a good coach in the mix you will be the team of the teens.
You can see my user name. If my boys fall short in the future and yours don’t, I will be rooting for you.

Newsflash! The jokes about KC BBQ and local restaurants are really getting old. Do you really still think its funny? Really? You wanna-be comedians should come up with some new material. How old are you, 10? I thought fat jokes ended in junior high school. Apparently not with some of you. Personally, I do not judge a coach by his waist size, but rather his experience and ability. I think this is a great move for the team and does it really matter what a coach looks like? Do you make jokes about bald coaches? Do you call coaches with glasses “four eyes?” Are you football fans or immature punks?

very well writen post. and you’re calling the other posters in here jr high schoolers?

  20. Hey Chiefs Fan, the problem with fat guys is that they are fat. They set a terrible example. They can’t control their mouths, they have no discipline and it shows. How can they expect someone else to bust their ass for them when they can’t even control their fat mouths? All the chiefs need now is Andy Reid as head coach. he sets the standard. His kids are a testament to his good leadership skills.

  21. Fattest staff in the NFL. At least they still have Haley to bring down the average pound per staff member calculation. What a disgusting staff in a disgusting town. KC will continue to blow dong.

  22. So I guess your observation is all wet, huh?
“Regardless of how it all works out, putting public pressure on the Chiefs likely isn’t an ideal strategy. Unless Linta’s ultimate objective is to place Crennel elsewhere.”

  23. Chiefs players better be quick to the locker room after games if they want to get any of the post-game spread.

  24. Broncos fans are going to get fatter while they get more helpings of ” whip ass” like the one they got jan 3

  25. Congratulations to Crennel, he’s a really nice guy.
While he was not to blame for all of the Browns problems, he was obviously not HC material. Maybe he was too nice for the job, or maybe it was his health. However, he has demonstrated his skills and knowledge as a DC. It’s time to move on.
A nice guy who’s earned a new beginning!
