Shaun Ellis will play with broken hand

Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis had a rough start to Sunday’s game.

“I tried to just finish [the first] series. Then, once I got to the sideline, I said. ‘You know what, my hand is broken,’” Ellis said in a conference call Monday. “Then they checked and were like, ‘Yeah, you’re right, it is.’”

This being the playoffs, Ellis just got his hand wrapped into a club, then played the rest of the game. The setup was partially responsible for Ellis not being able to wrap up Philip Rivers for a sack, but the team will take the same approach this week.

Ellis will undergo surgery after the AFC Championship, whether the Jets win or not. The team considered having surgery this week, but he wouldn’t heal in time to play. The extra week after the AFC title game would allow him to get ready for the Super Bowl if the Jets make it.

The Jets defensive line has done a remarkable job since Kris Jenkins was lost for the year, with Ellis leading the way.
