Eagles add Dick Jauron as DBs coach

NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora reports that the Eagles have hired ex-Bills head coach Dick Jauron to coach their secondary.

Jauron replaces Brian Stewart on staff.  Stewart left Philadelphia a week ago to take the defensive coordinator job at the University of Houston.
In Philadelphia, Jauron will be charged with coaching up a pass defense that ranked No. 17 overall in 2009.  The Eagles have a pair of top-flight cornerbacks in Sheldon Brown and Asante Samuel, as well as a reliable strong safety in Quintin Mikell.  Free safety has been a trouble spot.
The Eagles are also expected to upgrade at left defensive end this offseason.  A potent pass rusher at that position would theoretically take pressure off Philadelphia’s defensive backs and increase their big-play opportunities.

  1. i’m sure he’ll have fun teaching Assante Samuel to tackle,…he’s no Deion Sanders

  2. Wow, talk about a demotion. Go from head coach of a crappy team to Secondary Coach of a really crappy team

  3. FS is Macho Harris. Considering he was a rookie who switched from corner to safety, there is a decent chance (but no guarantee) that he will grow into the position.

  4. “i’m sure he’ll have fun teaching Assante Samuel to tackle,…he’s no Deion Sanders”
haha, I agree. I’m getting alittle tired of seeing he and “Macho” Harris throw shoulders into guys like Jason Witten and think that will be enough.

  5. Done much better than joining a well-run, perennial contender? Yeah sounds like a real dumb decision to me. I don’t get where people get the idea that the Eagles suck. I realize they haven’t won a SB. Neither has Dan Marino, does he suck too? Andy Reid has the second most wins w/ one team among active coaches, behind Belichick. He is the winningest coach in the NFC since he joined the Eagles. The Eagles are the best team in the NFC since 2000. Because they haven’t won the big game, that suddenly makes them the Raiders? Don’t think so.

  6. I really dislike this man Dick Jauron.
Somehow he scammed the bills into giving him way too much input on drafting and personnel…the results are as follows.
His first EVER draft pick in 2006: The 5’9 Whitner at #8, instead of the 350 lb. Haloti Ngata. Ngata is now crushing double and triple teams for the ravens. They both have the same # of career interceptions.
2007: Lynch, Poz, Edwards…nothing special there.
    2008: McKelvin over Clady
    2009: Maybin over Cushing/Matthews/Orakpo
It is no wonder that the bills will suck for a while. It is Dick Jauron’s fault, just like it was his fault in Chicago. He is nothing more than a secondary coach. Thanks for stealing money from a bunch of poor people in Western New York, Dick!

  7. Dick Jauron will be a fine addition to the coaching staff in Philadelphia. I see the Eagles pick 24th in the draft. Current opinion has them taking a linebacker not a defensive end.
    GO STEELERS!

  8. The Bills secondary has always been the stronger part of their defense while he was there.
People just look at his record as a head coach and assume he sucks at everything.
    Go do some research.

  9. I agree Klytus, Jauron is a top notch coach. They’ll immediately be better on the back end.
    GO STEELERS!!!

  10. @nagurskiTform all those draft picks you laid out were not all Jauron’s decisions, they were Ralph Wilson’s in large part.
Jauron will be an excellent addition for the Iggles.
He’s a good teacher, well respected coach. Just not a capable head coach in this league obviously.

  11. nagurski, haha. Typical “fan” of a team and football. You can’t evaluate a draft class that quickly.
Besides, Lynch had 2 thousand yard seasons his first 2 years while not even playing a full 16 games. Poz had 110 tackles 2 years in a row and this year he didn’t even play all 16 games. That sucks to you?
Edwards was a 3rd round QB. What did you expect? Tom Brady?
Besides, what makes you think he was in charging of picking those guys?
    Ignorance.

  12. “@ Chapnasty – Enjoy Wade Phillips some more jackass.”
No I think you guys should enjoy him more. He’s 5-2 against the 0-3gles!

  13. @ RugDaniels – You reason like a woman. Where does he compare McNabb to Marino? He’s actually making a valid point. Dousche.

  14. Jason Peters should give Mauron a big hug because Mauron was stupid enough to trade Peters out of Buffalo with no replacement, which in part lead to the Bills’ pathetic O-line and ultimately Mauron’s long overdue firing!
Ralph Wilson woke up from his nap, heard this and realized he saved himself a few hundred thousand dollars on the $3M he owes Mauron in 2010! Ralph will try to add that to his brinks truck that he plans to have following his hearse!

  15. Pathetic Cowpie ‘fans’ need to squeak and squeal over every single move made by the Eagles.
“Oh, oh, you may have hired a new secondary coach, but we have Wade Phillips, and he looks so cute and cuddly! I just want to tussle his hair!”

  16. Wow! I cant believe Jauron would take this position. Great move for the Eagles, not so much for Jauron.

  17. “Oh, oh, you may have hired a new secondary coach, but we have Wade Phillips, and he looks so cute and cuddly! I just want to tussle his hair!”
Not only is he cute and cuddly, he’s a much better head coach than Andy Reid (not to mention about 100 pounds lighter) and a much better defensive coordinator than Sean McDermott.

  18. Dick is a good man, and had little to nothing to do with the drafting an dpalyer personelle problems in Buffalo, you cna blame that on Ralphs contstant input in that dept, he’ll make a great secondary or DC. The guy took more than he could chew in Buffalo but will be a great asset to Philly in a pass happy NFC east.

  19. My jaw dropped when I saw Quintin Mikell in the pro bowl. He didn’t suck as badly as the rookie, Harris, but he’s not exactly a top flight safety. Harris, at least, was a rookie who will probably play better this year, his second year ever playing safety (he was a CB in college). Mikell has peaked.
The problem is that neither guy is Dawkins.
Another problem is that Sheldon Brown had a lot of mental errors this year that hadn’t shown up in prior seasons. And another is that the risky style Samuel plays only works when you have good safeties, which they don’t.
Jauron is a good coach and may well improve both Harris and Mikell. Or he may be smart enough to see that Sean Jones is better than Harris and make Macho a backup/dime player.

  20. Of course Dallas Cowboy fan is bitter at the Eagles…Philly has had it’s way and pretty much bitch slapped Dallas over the last decade. It’s a fact!
I think Dallas should have used some PICKLE JUICE in that Vikings game!

  21. That just about seals it. Another Superbowl victory for the Eagles is pretty much assured with this brilliant move. They were already the best team in football… and have been for as long as I’ve watched the NFL.
Seems like nothing can slow this Philadelphia juggernaut.

  22. Don’t understand all the “good coach” and “fine addition” blather from some of the wizards here. He caught lightning in a bottle one year in Chicago, and coached a Buffalo team that started 6-2 one year. Other than that….?
Many vouch that he is a “good man” and that players love him….well of course they do, he’s just a swell guy and demands NOTHING from them!
    Enjoy….

  23. Hey Vox,
    Andy Reid:
    108-67-1 (Regular Season)
    10-8 (Postseason)
    118-75-1 (Overall)
    Doubghboy Phillips:
    80-54-0 (Regular Season)
    1–4 (Postseason)
    81-58-0 (Overall)
    Uhm, yeah.
Here’s an idea for Vex & Chapstick:
Either reverse time to the mid 90’s, or WAIT until Dallas, Rom-O-Choke, and Doughboy Phillips ACTUALLY compile a resume worth bragging about. With that said, we’ll wait for your reply in about 4 years when/IF you can match Philly, McNabb, & Reid’s accomplishments on the field. Until then enjoy playing each other in World of Warcraft!

  24. This is exactly the position Jauron should be in, except, the Bills retained their secondary coach, thinking he is the guy who gave the Bills the edge in the secondary and helped develop Jairus Byrd. So who is wrong? The Bills for retaining Catavolos or the Eagles for hiring a guy (in my mind) who has a sparkling resume(for a DB coach)?
Jauron should be in a position that has little decision making, he barely knows a good time to call a time out, don’t get me started on challenges.
If Jauron did have a big say in the draft, then I would have to say i have been very happy with their recent drafts, he filled a lot of holes, and in Buffalo we had a lot of holes, some miss, but you can’t expect to get it right every time, and he was in a division that was all about passing (patriots) so we drafted tons of DB’s.

Hmmm. How many years and teams did it take for Phillips to finally get a playoff win? Reid won a playoff game in his 2nd year as head coach, which should mean that Phillips won a playoff game the first year he ever coached a team, right?

  26. “Hmmm. How many years and teams did it take for Phillips to finally get a playoff win?”
Hmm, why would you put something like that just on the coach? They just coach. It’s up to the players to play.
“Reid won a playoff game in his 2nd year as head coach”
And he’s 2-5 against Wade Phillips. Reid’s the guy that is completely clueless as to how to simply manage a game, remember? The guy that would rather lose via the pass than win with a balanced offensive attack. Yeah, same guy that put together a defense that can’t get pressure on a QB without blitzing the house.

  27. “Of course Dallas Cowboy fan is bitter at the Eagles…Philly has had it’s way and pretty much bitch slapped Dallas over the last decade. It’s a fact!”
Are you serious? I didn’t start watching football just 10 years ago. Did you? The 0-3gles are only 13-8 against the Cowboys since 2000 anyway. Big deal. So they got a head start years ago at the beginning of the decade. The Cowboys are 7-4 against the 0-3gles since 2005. That’s a better winning percentage (.636) than the 0-3gles’ winning percentage over the Cowboys over the last decade (.619). It’s a fact!
And of course, the Cowboys’ all-time winning percentage over the 0-3gles is .561.

  28. Vox thinks that there are two teams that play in the NFL, the Cowpokes and Iggles. He forgets about the other 30 teams. Since I dislike the Cowpokes, I root for the other teams so as I see it in Vox’s view:
    Super Bowl Wins:
    30 other teams 37 wins
    Cowpokes 5 wins
    Iggles 0
And after this Super Bowl, the number will be 38!
Last time I checked, the Boys lost 34-3 to the Vikes! The funny thing was that this was their best chance to get to the Super Bowl and they blew it!
