Sharper says Saints aren't dirty, but "a little grimy"

With the Saints sending quarterback Kurt Warner woozy into retirement a week and a day before turning Brett Favre’s leg and foot a deeper shade of purple than his helmet, the Saints are now being faced with the accusation that they play dirty on defense.

Safety Darren Sharper addressed the subject on Wednesday.

“We don’t know if we want to call ourselves dirty,” Sharper said.  “[I]t is like taking a shower when you get up in the morning and are going to cut your grass.  You are nice and fresh when you cut the grass, but at the end you have a little griminess to you.  We want to call ourselves a little grimy; not dirty all the way, but just maybe a little grimy.  That is how we like to play.”

So, presumably, Peyon Manning’s ass will be the grass on Sunday, and Sharper and his teammates will be pushing the lawnmower.

  1. But hey, they are America’s Team now so they are allowed late hits, trapped catches, fumbled attempted first downs and cheap shots. So the rules don’t apply to them. Go Colts!

  2. It’s football…you don’t like getting hit….go watch the Pro Bowl!!
Rich Eisen loves Favre more than Florio…he’s still talking about the hit to Favre’s ankle but what no one says is that Loadholt pushed him into Lord Favre…..Manning’s going to flop before he gets a “remember me” hit but if they do get a hold of him….legit or not I bet the flag comes out!

  3. But hey, they are America’s Team now so they are allowed late hits, trapped catches, fumbled attempted first downs and cheap shots. So the rules don’t apply to them. Go Colts!

Uh-hem. I recommend you review the steelers colts AFC championship game from 07 if you insist on crying foul.

  4. Saints are EXTREMELY lucky to be in the Super Bowl.
The Saints offense has carried them all season.
The Saints defense ranked 25th in the league.
So I guess they are “grimy” if by grimy Jamie Sharper means far below average.
    (Jamie = ZING!)

  5. The Willams Sisters are a shining example of rules not applying to everyone….stfu Viking crybabies.

  6. For whatever reason, the NFL wants the Saints to win this year, and they will get all of the help they need from the officials.
Just like they did in the conference championship game.

  7. I hope that when the Vikings and Saints play next year that the Vikings are fine with giving the Saints their first TD on nothing but personal fouls… On every play of that drive make sure they absolutely smother Mr. Brees… and make sure the offense delivers a nice chop block or two on Macrae as well.

  8. But hey, they are America’s Team now so they are allowed late hits, trapped catches, fumbled attempted first downs and cheap shots. So the rules don’t apply to them. Go Colts!
like the late hit on San-chise………
don’t make me go” ghetto” on you……

  9. Anyone that thinks the Saints are dirty are a bunch of whiny asses. Seriously. They’re a physical defense. They don’t dive at knees, and do dirty things to hurt guys.
How many times a year do you hear about “rattling” the opposing QB, what exactly do you all think that means? It means putting him on his ass a few times and making him think about you!
Not so much Favre, but Warner and Peyton are very much about rhythm and timing in their game, so throwing that off is the best way to beat them.

  10. Since I havent seen anyone mention it yet, I will point out that Florio spelled “Peyton” wrong wen he wrote:
“So, presumably, Peyon Manning’s ass will be the grass on Sunday, and Sharper and his teammates will be pushing the lawnmower.”
So there you go, because correcting Florio’s grammar is the thing to do…..oh, and bitch about non story stories…..

  11. Nothing like being able to give cheap shots and late hits, then laugh and make jokes about it at press conferences because you know you’re immune to repercussions, as long as you’re playing dirty in the name of the Katrina victims. What a joke.

  12. Doesn’t matter what they want to call themselves, they are dirty & “the big forehead” will pick them apart.

  13. Gathman78:
Don’t be bitter because the Saints beat Favre into a pulp and forced the mistake-prone Vikes into turning the ball over 6-8 times. They choked, get over it and look forward to being a mediocre team next year when Favre is gone.

  14. They gave up almost 500 yards to Minnesota and they call themselves “Grimy”. I would just say thier defense sucks.

  15. All those who want to watch flag football turn your t.v.’s off Sunday, all those who want to watch Tackle Football tune in to the Superbowl.

  16. Minnesota Fans,
YOUR DAMN TEAM LOST THE GAME.
5 FUMBLES (3 LOST) DID YOU IN.
    LORD FARVE THREW 2 PICKS.
    MOVE ON….
    Thanks,
    The Rest of America

  17. Been hearing all this stat garbage about the 25th ranked Saints defense (358 yds/game)
    Indy was ranked a stellar 18th (339 yds/game) . For a whopping difference OF….
    19 yards a game!
Go ahead and act a donkey on that…

  18. per bill james’ scoring system, turnovers are worth a 4 point swing per and 20 yards – 1 pt.
saints should have won by more…
i think one really means the rules would change further in the colts’ favor. if one’s team wins a championship they should be kicked off the competition / rules committee.

  19. Got to love the Viking fans, they lose every year but because they lost in OT this time around, all of a sudden its a conspiracy.
When all you do is choke, then you should just come to accept it.

  20. I love how soo many saints fans come out of the woodwork when we are winning!! Go buy a paper bag and stay off the message boards, you’re making our entire fanbase look like idiots. That game is probably thee most obviously gift wrapped win since the infamous “tuck rule” NE win. Get over it Saints fans, its all over the NFL community, all over the internet, all over espn and nfl network, the Vikes got screwed and thats not something even we Saints fans can honestly deny. When you do, it shows how very little you know about the sport.
    ~who dat

  21. Viking fans mentioned nothing about the late hit and the loss. It came out from the league 4 days later that it was a missed call and fine! The Packers lose and within minutes they have a STILL FRAME picture of Rogers on the internet. I did not see a fine or admission from the league. Soo you “LEBOWSKI” can stfu!!!!!!!!!

  22. Hotpepper – you beat me to it. The defensive stats are virtually identical between the two teams except for one major difference. The Saints get 50% more turnovers than the Colts, and that number is even higher counting the post-season.
They didn’t hit Favre late, the two times they were flagged for it were bogus calls, one of which lead to 7 pts since it happened on a 3rd down play that the Saints stopped. The low hit on Favre wasn’t late, nor was it a penalty until this year, so the Vikes still came out ahead on that deal.
The Colts’ were fined for a late hit on Sanchez, so if the Saints are dirty I suppose the Colts (and every single defense in the NFL) are too.
    Waaaaaaaah!

  23. What was that $10,000 fine Favre paid for in pre-season…wait..what’s that? A cheap shot crack back block.
It’s ok for other teams to play dirty, that’s called tough defense, but don’t let it happen to them because then it’s dirty.
If a team doesn’t score more points than your team, it doesn’t matter how many yards a defense gives up….you still lose.

  24. I am a disgusted Vikings fan. My only problem is with Childress. If NO was going to take a FEW shots at my QB then I would match that at the very least. Send in Robison for a play and drill Brees and then stare at the NO bench. Kind of like baseball………….Protect your star player! Childress failed to do that. One of his few jobs and can’t even do that. I wish Gardy would have been coaching that game!!!!!!

  25. If the Saints are abiding to the rules of football….. then why are they getting fined after the game is over? Maybe it is just me, but I don’t see a lot of players getting fined after the game when they made acceptable hits.
I agree that this is football and people will get hurt. But intentionally trying to hurt a player to get them out of the game is well dirrrrty – with a capital who DAT. We might as allow punches and chop blocks – lets spice this game up some more since there isn’t enough drama already.

  26. I think it’s more likely that Manning is going to be the big rock that the goys pushing that lawnmower don’t see in the grass. HHRRRRRANNGGG!!

  27. Captain-
Were you in the stands 3, 4, 6 years ago? When our Saints just about had to move due to lack of interest? Atleast the Vikings sell out their games, even if it takes an occasional threat of a blackout to do so.
I’ve been a season ticket holder for the last 24 years and I can say with absolute certainty that you shouldn’t be talking about what or who makes a good fan. Its only been 2 years now that we’ve been filling the stands. Prior to then I was able to sit just about anywhere I wanted to after the 1st half of the game. So spare us all in your obvious recently grown Saints ego.
And to all Saints fans who can’t seem to grasp the fact that sometimes teams are “given” a win, you need to learn how to pay attention to how things work in the NFL for a couple more decades before opening your yaps. Or do us all a big favor and buy a ticket to a game two years from now and leave the paper bags off when you do go.

It’s very apparent that “guys” like Majik (who’s been getting owned routinely on this site on virtually every thread he posts on) and the rest of the Minnesota Loser Brigade have ever played football, let along watched it in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s when it was still a game played by men. It’s especially funny given that how the Saints played the Vikings in the NFCCG was NOTHING compared to how the famed Purple People Eater defenses played.
    ____________
Who has been “owning” me on this site? You? Supersuckers? Any other D bag Packer fan who fails to use facts and reasoning in their arguments, and still thinks GB was better than Minny even though they lost in the Wild Card round and lost twice to the Vikes? You’re an idiot, and couldn’t intellectually own an infant, let alone an actual rationally thinking adult.
And for your info, I actually played high school and college ball. And everyone I watched the game with, all of who have played ball and possess an IQ over the impressive 37 score you nailed, say that was one of the worst called games ever.

  29. durno99; “Viking fans mentioned nothing about the late hit and the loss”. That might be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read on here.

  30. Pathetic that Vikings fans are on here telling Saints fans that we’re making our team look bad.
    Pot, meet kettle.
You’re here, STILL bitching about a loss that happened almost two weeks ago. Are you expecting the NFL to overturn the game because you’re mad about some imagined late hits on your Savior??
Tell you what, tell Fumbles Peterson to hold on to the ball and then next year maybe you won’t have to be on PFT two weeks later trying to scrape the bottom of the excuse barrel to explain away your pathetic ball handling skills.
And for those of you who just can’t take seeing a QB get hit….go watch tennis.

Not true at all. Check the posts. Vikings fans were crying SECONDS after the game ended. Also, one of those hits on farve wouldve been impossible to stop. If you weigh ~300lbs and are charging as fast as you can at someone, I would LOVE to see you stop in 1 second after the ball leaves the QB’s hand. Basic physics will show you that’s not possible.

  32. Captain-
You do know the Vikes marched up and down the field on us right? You mention “Vike fans complaining about the refs not giving them yardage when their offense couldn’t”. yet just another Saints fan that should learn to think prior to posting.

  34. Cap Fantastick is delusional. You suck sir
Can’t wait for the Saints to win their first SB so everyone can shut up about them. Look for Brees to be taken out next season. As good a qb as he is, he won’t be able to take the punishment Favre did.

  35. The only thing wrong with all this talk of dirty play is the refs will be looking for anything that looks even a little dirty.
All the talk will cost the aints 30 to 45 yards in flags and first downs
The Saints are not to smart they should let the way the play talk for them
The NFL has one great QB that is Payton and I am sure the NFL is going to punish the aints for anything that even looks bad.
Payton is a much better actor then Brady and he gets calls so how many do you think the Saints are giving up by talking?

  36. “So, presumably, Peyon Manning’s ass will be the grass on Sunday, and Sharper and his teammates will be pushing the lawnmower.”
    NICE

  37. The Saints won’t rough up Manning. They will rough up Wayne, Collie, Clark and Garcon. That my friends, is called gameplanning. See Patriots vs Rams 2001 SB when the Pats DBs jammed Hakim, Bruce, Proehl etc. at the line and forced three turnovers inthe game for 17 pts.

You do realise that the Vikes are in the top 3 in post season appearances and the Saints are in the bottom 3 right?
Please Saints fans, do us a favor and think prior to posting.

  39. The packer fans are the worst most uneducated fans on earth. The Aints are very dirty and the guy who hit Favre in the knee was NOT pushed into him, what a lame excuess. The Aints didnt beat the Vikings, the Vikings beat them selfs. The Aints should of lost to the Redskins for gods sake and did lose to the Bucs lol.The Packer fans need to come out of the closet .

  40. Theres a big difference from playing “rough” or smash mouth football to deliberately aiming shots at joints and trying to get a cart on the field.
If that is the case, then the Patriots must be the toughest team in the league…. not even then I’m sure.
I’m going for the Colts, and I hope that Darren Sharper and Gregg Williams both end up a crumpled mess like Tom Brady on what I considered the best day of my life.

  41. Love how this type of story prompts all the Vikings haters. Their weak minds are filled with fear.

  42. Jimmysmith says:
“packer fans are the worst most uneducated fans on earth.” Then goes on to butcher the English language in every way possible. Lame ‘excuess’?? ‘Them selfs’?? ‘Should of’?? You, sir, are the idiot. But please, keep the ammo coming… we love it.

  43. Love how this type of story prompts all the Vikings haters. Their weak minds are filled with fear.
You mean, love how this story brings out all the weak minded hateful Vikings

  44. I love listening to the Colts fans in this thread.
But it’s OK: THE GREEK forgives you all. You’re COLTS fans, after all. If the Steelers, the Bears, or the Packers were going to the big dance, and their fans were whining about the other team playing physical… well now, that would be downright embarrassing.
But the one thing Colts fans have come to expect: a finesse offense enabled by the the refs and the league protecting one of their golden boy QBs.

  45. We Saints fans ought to be a little concerned about Williams announcing to the NFL community that he is willing to sacrifice penalty and possible injury for wins. I for one love his attitude and ambition but when something like that is announced it not only gets the attention of disgruntled fans of opposing teams, it also gets the attention of refs and opposing teams coaches and players.
What happens when and if Brees gets knocked out for a season or God forbid his career gets cut short in retaliation? Who will we have to thank?
Play the game as its supposed to be played and when you skirt the edges of the rules, do not run your mouth about it to the media..

  46. Vikings fans:
There are four facets to a football game:
Offense: Vikings played better than the Saints.
Defense: Vikings played better than the Saints.
Special Teams: Saints played better than the Vikings.
Turnovers: Balls on the ground, balls on the ground, Vikings looking like fools with balls on the ground.
Oh, and one other stat: 31-28 suck on that!!!
    Geaux Saints!
(I guess that pisses you off also.)
    Who Dat!
    (I know this one does.)

  47. The city of New Orleans is more than “a little grimy”. I can assure you of that. That place is disgusting. Geaux Saints!

Lol,I was a Packer fan up till I saw the light and bob_neslon and I broke up.I need time to get the education I have been denied all these years. You see it is not cool for a Packer fan to stay in school past the 8th grade. Now I have alot of cathing up to do.

  49. Just so everyone knows saintsfan66 is a fake, he’s not a saints fan. He’s a Vikings fan trying to be a Saints fan…..lol. The Saints weren’t about to leave 3.4.5 or 6 years ago jackass.

  50. The Saints defense is dirty… They hold jerseys on receivers, check past 5 yards and score dirty hit after dirty late hit on opposing QB’s. They did it in both post season games to both QB’s. It will be interesting to see if they will be allowed this latitude on Peyton Manning. My guess is they will be flagged more than twice as much for hitting Manning as they were for hitting either Warner or Farve. Personally, I want to see the Saints lose, not for their cracker jack offense, but for the dirty defense that that they acknowledge as dirty and announce ahead of time this is their dirtiest game to date. I hope they get beat!!!

  51. For the rest of the PFT universe, I will give you the skinny on the Viking fans. The team will either draft a player or sign a FA and that will begin 6 months of “we are going to the superbowl”, doesn’t even matter the player or the position, its just in their DNA to claim the paper championship every spring.
Then the season begins and if they win a few games like they did this year, then its official, they are really going to win the superbowl, if not, excuses and complaining.
Let the history books show, they never won anything and very likely, never will.

  52. Who is this person trying to be me?Why do Packer fans sink that low?I guess his hand got tired of jacking his father off.The Packers are the joke of the NFL.But their fans are even a bigger joke. They win a few championships in the late 50’s early 60’s when there were only 11 teams to compete with lol yea that is a big deal.I just have one question for the loser Packer fans. What team has beat the Packers 3 times in a row now?Yup that is right, the VIKINGS.

  53. saintsfan66
Thats gotta be Pervy. You sound even more idiotic trying to garner a little sympathy. You can still come over & watch the bowl on my colerd TV. My cousin’ll be here!!!

  54. You know what…I gonna join the greatest fanbase of all time. Drew got robbed and shoulda been leeg MVP. I hate Brett Farve. Wish he would reetyre. Vikings suck and were ownded by da Saints. I caint wait to be sellabratin in New Orleans afta da Supaboil!! Shoov that skol crap, I’m ready to be pullin for winner for a change. Been a long time, sho feels good. Viking fans…COME TO THE DARK SIDE!!!!

  55. After eading all of this, it sounds to me like Minnesota needs to draft an Offensive Line that can protect their QB……j/s

  56. Purple People Eater – do you know what the term “irony” means? For anyone with that handle to utter one word about “dirty” defenses pretty much defines the word.

  57. For whatever reason, the NFL wants the Saints to win this year, and they will get all of the help they need from the officials.
Just like they did in the conference championship game.
    **************
I don’t know about the Saints getting help from the zebras, but they definately got a lot of help from Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and Lord Favre himself. Blaming officials sounds pretty lame after a team loses by putting the ball on the ground five times and throwing two picks.
It’s called “denial”. Look into it.

  58. There are alot of pseudo part time fans on here… who the hell is SaintFan66??? sounds like everything BUT a Saints Fan…The type of fan who loved it when we were bad and longs 4 those days 2 return…Allow a true Saints fan 2 retort…The Saints were #25 in Defense, with half of its starters out 4 weeks on end…but, and if U know football this is BIG, THEY WERE #2 IN RED ZONE DEFENSE!!! So when yards start equalling TDs automatically I will give in 2 your “fact”. The Saints are #6 Rushing the ball and #4 Passing, and #1 overall in offense… The Colts beat 2 one dimensional teams whereas we beat 2 HOF QBs…We’re more ready 4 “HelmetHead’ than they are 4 Drew Brees,PT,Bush,or Bell…
