NFL Films withholds post-interception talk

Reggie Wayne was wired for the Super Bowl and mostly didn’t say much.  But as I watched parts of the game for an obsessive third time, I knew that Wayne’s mic’d up segment would pay off huge in the end.

What did Peyton Manning say to Wayne after his back-breaking interception?

Apparently, we’ll never know. NFL Films chose to omit the conversation from NFL Replay, and kept it out of their otherwise awesome online audio choices

Look, I feel weird criticizing anything having to do with NFL Films.  I would nominate the Sabols for Sainthood, much less Canton.  But if you are going to give us Wayne mic’d up all game, you can’t withhold the moment after history was made!  (In the immortal words of Chris Russo, that’s a bad job.)

Failing to include the conversation just makes me think it’s juicier. Maybe they are protecting Manning.  Or Wayne. Maybe it’s filled with expletives.

It was an opportunity to hear one of the game’s all-time greats after one of the most intensely painful moments of his career.  It would have been compelling and honest.  Isn’t that the idea behind putting microphones on players in the first place?

UPDATE: NFL Films gave PFT an explanation.

  1. Something stinks around Manning. I’m no conspiracy theorist, but there seems to be ulterior motives surronding him and the league. Maybe I just don’t trust Goodell. Don’t know what Goodell has to do with NFL films but still.

  2. Agreed. But you cant villafy the NFL’s golden boy. Im a Colts fan so i dont even wanna know. Its like finding out at a young age that mom and dad got divorced bc Mom was bangin the poolboy… Somethings are just better off unsaid

  3. This is asinine. I realize that NFL Films is the propaganda arm of the NFL, but come on. I have the feeling that this piece of audio will shatter Manning’s golden boy marketing image faster than a Tiger Woods sex tape.

  4. Probably WAS filled with Expletives, which would explain why it would never be on NFL films anyway. If I want to hear a bunch of swear words, I will just read my posts.

  5. Manning’s image is getting worse and worse. Man i really used to like this guy but starting not too. If they don’t release it we’ll just make some shit up how bout that. How about this.
Reggie my dream just came true, i i threw the winning touchdown for the Saints to win the super bowl!

  6. “Maybe I just don’t trust Goodell. Don’t know what Goodell has to do with NFL films but still.”
Me either .. hes whats wrong with the No Fun League..
Said it before sayin it again
    BRING BACK TAGLIABUE!!
ps.. Manning is one of the leagues treasures just like Shady Brady… you will never see the NFL taint their image in anyway

  7. I have the transcript. Wayne said, “Manning, you’re an overrated piece of crap and your choking just cost us another big game.”
Oh wait, maybe that was transcript from Tennessee. My bad.

  8. I don’t agree with Sabol’s call not to include the footage either.
(In the immortal words/lyrics of L.T., not a very good call, I don’t like that call…)

  9. Manning was miked for the Colts game in 2006 against the Rams. Part of it was shown on the America’s Game episode on NFLN for their Championship run that year (an argument between Manning and Saturday about Peyton not calling running plays enough). What they failed to include was the first half tantrum Peyton threw on the sideline, screaming at the O-line and Howard Mudd because he was getting hit/sacked quite a bit. I was watching the game, and they mentioned Peyton was miked up. I remember thinking that whatever Manning was screaming during that tirade would never make it on the air. Never have seen/heard what was said. The NFL is very obviously committed to keeping Manning’s image squeaky clean.

  10. I actually heard what Peyton said. He said “hey Reggie, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Gieco.” LMAO

  11. where is ARLEN SPECTOR when we really need him??? …all kidding aside, it does sound strange, let the conspiracy theories begin…

  12. NFL Films is protecting Manning. He probably tore into Reggie. I’d bet my left nut, Peyton blamed Reggie & this clip made the Professor look BAD. Probably REAL bad. Would certainly tarnish his image, & marketability to the public/sponsors/endorsements etc, to hear Peyton come off as the pompous Ahole he is. No way, did he walk up to Reggie, & say “my bad”, or “Sorry Reg, I shoulda…..” For sure it was, vintage, Ahole Manning blaming someone else for him Fckn up.
Alas, we’ll have to wait many years later, as some of his teammates write books after they retire, or come clean when their careers are over. Im sure Reggie aint the only one, who has been lectured by Manning, after Manning chokes.

  13. Manning is probably the biggest cash cow in sports today. His mugg is ubiquitous. NFL Films was probably under strict orders not to mess with the valuable and precious Manning image. It couldn’t have helped though, when news got out that he engaged his chocolate star with the face of a female trainer while in college.

  14. Really? It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why the conservation may have been omitted? Just think about it or do we have to explain it to you?

  15. @red13
We are talking about the same tirade, I would defer to you as being correct on the actual game or date. I assumed it was earlier in Manning’s career because it was on the NFL Network this last week and Saturday said that Manning must have thought he had a good week of practice or something to have screamed at him like that. They had the entire dialogue on the NFL Network, with the cuss words beeped out obviously. So don’t get too caught up with the NFL conspiracy theories, they will release it eventually.

  16. Honestly, who gives a shit. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that it probably wasn’t good. FFS Florio, this site is getting pathetic.

Manning’s image is getting worse and worse. Man i really used to like this guy but starting not too.”
I figured it would happen sooner or later.
He just has this quality about him. I don’t know what it is, but A-Rod has it too. Tiger too a little bit.
When someone has to work SO HARD to maintain their image, it’s usually because the image is an illusion.

  18. “It was an opportunity to hear one of the game’s all-time greats after one of the most intensely painful moments of his career. It would have been compelling and honest. Isn’t that the idea behind putting microphones on players in the first place?”
Uh, no. Not if it makes the league look bad. Manning probably said something stupid and petty and the league wants to protect it’s cash cow from the perception that he might not pee fine wine and crap golden nuggets.

  19. For crying out loud, we’re talking about a guy who put his anus on a female trainer’s head, then got her fired when she complained about it…..
And then reminisced fondly about the incident in his biography years later after he was well beyond the “youthful indiscretion” age.
There’s something off about the guy.

  20. Florio, how about answering a question for once? Didn’t the NFL Network (Owned by the NFL) purchase NFL Films and then lay everyone off in the Mt. Laurel office including Steve Sabol?

  21. Interesting take, Gregg.
Not a huge Manning fan, but at least he doesn’t spell it Manningg.

  22. What Goodell heard:
“Oh, diddley poo! Now I’ve done it – I have erred and allowed the opposition to acquire the football! Drat it all.”
    What he really said:
“**** A DUCK! ****IN’ BULL**** MORON ******* ****SUCKER! THERE GOES MY ****IN’ NATIONAL DISNEYLAND SPOT, YOU ****HEAD!”

  23. The Players want more money? So do the owners.. I would pay to hear wired players for my team each and every week like the in car cam and mic they have in Nascar…. If it pay for, it should be uncensored as well. I wanna hear what players call each other, I wanna hear the coaches expletive laden rants…
It’ll never happen but that’d be pretty cool.

  25. They are covering up for Peyton, Just like the media did before when you T-bagged a Tennessee employee.
Manning says in the book that he pulled down his pants while the trainer was examining his feet in the Volunteers’ locker room. He said the trainer had a “vulgar mouth,” but concedes his behavior was “inappropriate.”
“Crude, maybe, but harmless,” he wrote.
Naughright alleges Manning placed his “naked butt” on her face. She filed the lawsuit in Polk County, Fla., in 2002, two years after the book was published, saying it disparaged her and seeking at least $15,000.

  26. Doesn’t matter to me.
You gotta put yourself in that position if one of your guys screwed up or you screwed up in such an emotional game you wouldn’t want your soundboard out for the world to hear/critisize.
Leave this one alone. Let them be.

  27. Following that up…
I wouldn’t have read this if I wasn’t interested… but still I think the media should leave them alone on this one.

  28. Hold up! Why the backlash against Peyton? Wayne was horrible Sunday. If you watch, he was slow coming out of breaks all day. On the interception, you see the DB jumping on the ball, primarily cause Wayne kind of stutter stepped out of the break. Give Peyton a break, all the anti Manning talk is just piling on.

  29. I would guess that Manning owns the rights to his image and voice and has approval rights over anything released to the public. It’s not so much the NFL withholding something, but that they don’t have the rights to release it.

  30. Stone:
I beg to differ – they showed a small part of the tirade. I was watching the game, and Peyton was screaming at Howard Mudd (the O-line coach) and the whole O-line on the bench, and had to be pulled away by other teammates. It was definitely downplayed by NFL films, and edited a lot.

  31. I have never had a problem with the QB yelling at players in the right way and I don’t think anyone else does, thats why it is all the more interesting what they would cut out.

  32. It might of been something involving throwing the winning TD for the Saints since both of the players are from N.O., well Wayne is actually from a suburb. If that was the case I could see why they wouldn’t want to play it.

Wait….the DB knew exactly where the ball was going to be because, as he said, he read Peyton’s eyes, and it wasn’t the first time they ran the exact same route….
But it’s Wayne’s fault that Porter stepped in front of him and caught the ball BEFORE IT GOT TO WAYNE?
Yeah. That makes sense. Wayne was exactly where Peyton was throwing the ball too. Porter jumped in front of him.

  34. Come on people. Pull up your panties and stop the paytin Worship. When this guy has three Superbowl WINS under his belt and about to do his fourth, then, and only then can you carry on like you are babbling idiots( journalist???). Let pretty boy earn his reputation before you start the coronation. Montana is by far the best. Best. Paytin is not anywhere close. not yet.

  35. How does it protect Manning’s image to keep that conversation private? Doesn’t make any sense. Huge moment in the most important game of the year, it would be really interesting to see what Manning said and what Wayne said back to him. Who should have done what etc.
Only thing I can think of is that it’s full of expletives, and bleeping them all out would have rendered the clip worthless.
What, people don’t think football players curse?

  36. Guys…..I’m watching the clip of Peyton screaming at Jeff Saturday. It is NOT from early in his career.
Jim Sorgi is seen on the sideline and he didn’t even join the team until 2004.

  37. Way to call em out Florio!!!!
We all know this is crap! it is purely to protect Manning,
the league kisses his ass every game (and apparently he enjoys men kissing him anywhere) rheowing mystery flags for him, it is ridiculous.
It is so ridiculous what the league does for any manning,
just look at archies career stats, he is worst than joey harrington, yes archie was a saint, but joey was a lion!
Eli is useless, and peyton is great. But no matter how good peyton is, the league contributes to a lot of his success with odd flags all the time,

  38. It’ll come out 25 years from now like the Kennedy tapes…
Meanwhile Peyton’s busy cashing more checks from commercial endorsements than NASCAR

  39. 100% nailed it …lets hear it all. No protecting some players’ images and not others. Even as a Pats fan, I respect the hell out of Manning and want to hear how he handled it. If it was me and 1 of the words was not an expletive, it would have been a slip. Peyton (Satan) Manning you are still great…do you really need all those commercials? Lets hear the super competitive over achiever go off on someone that is not as committed as you are!

I think it was Tracy Porter stayed at a Holiday Inn the night before…
I agree with others, NFL Films can be “selective” on what they choose to show. How about when Tom Brady was SCREAMING at his teammates after taking sack after sack in the SB against the Giants – NOT ONCE have I ever seen that on NFL Films, or any other footage.
Manning definitely blamed someone (his coaches or his teammates, it couldn’t possibly be Peyton’s fault!!!!) for this (2005 divisional loss to the Steelers he not only threw the OL under the bus afterwards, but farted in their mouths for good measure too)
Good job floating this out there to the media Rosenthal, hopefully it will elicit a response from the NFL and Sabol.

  41. @red 13
Yeah, I saw that part as well. They were dragging him away and he was screaming at them to let him go and he kept going back at Saturday. Bottom line though, I don’t have a problem with it. Peyton was calling a pass and Saturday overruled him to a running play. You don’t overrule your QB (unless he’s a rookie, which is also part of my assumption on the video). I mean honestly, these guys are competing at the highest possible level, its understandable that they will scream at each other and swear at each other in the heat of the moment. No big deal. I’m a Parcells guy (lifetime Giants fan) and he had many memorable run-ins with players in the heat of the moment but it was no big deal at the end of the day. It might have been untoward for a Tony Dungy coached team (I don’t think that guy is capable of yelling) but I think its pretty normal for anyone in the NFL. The media likes to make it into a big deal (Florio) but this is just par for the course.

  42. This is just business. Seriously… how many players will offer to be mic’ed up in the future if they (or their teammates) get hung out to dry later by the network? It’s one thing if they get caught mouthing off when they aren’t mic’ed up… it’s another thing to agree to wear the mic, forget about it during the game (which you should do), and then get hung out to dry. It’s bad business for NFL films. There’s no conspiracy here… just good business decision making.

  43. I’m sure this isn’t the first time they’ve omitted some conversations from the official release. There’s probably lots of stuff that they cannot include because of expletives or just mean heartedness. They don’t want to portray any player in a negative mean spirited way.

  44. Of course!
Manning was blocked in the BACK BY 2 HANDS as Porter was making the return past him!
NO FLAG WAS THROWN! MANNING WAS YELLING TO THE REFS AS HE TURNED AROUND!
The refereeing AND video review-or not was totally one-sided this game AND for several key plays.

Florio’s probably too busy scrounging around for a Favre scoop, so I’ll pass this along without any responsibility for it’s accuracy.
Here’s a link to answers.com which has the most comprehensive background I’ve ever seen on NFL Film’s history. Apparently it’s been a subsidiary of the NFL since 1964.

Enjoy, it’s an interesting read. But it doesn’t address your question about layoffs.

  46. one of the most boring superbowls ever no run game no real defense did they even get their uniforms dirty?

  47. Ironically, as I was posting my comment on this subject Florio was posting a new Favre scoop. Well, perhaps it’s not so ironic.

  48. Everyone I watched the game with yelled about the garbage route that Reggie Wayne ran on the pick. I can’t imagine what Manning had to say about it. What’s the big deal?

  49. On their way off the field after the interception, Manning turned to Wayne and said: “I’ll never be as good as Brady”.

Doesn’t there need to be dirt for something to get “dirty”?
And that was actually one of the best Super Bowls I’ve seen. I don’t ever remember hearing anyone say “Ooohhh, this defensive showdown is really exciting…..OH! OH! ANOTHER THREE AND OUT! YES!! WITH A FEW GOOD RUNS WE COULD BE IN POSITION FOR ANOTHER FIELD GOAL! YAY!”

    YOU BASTARD!

  54. I heard that he said I’m so embarressed lets get the hell in the locker room without shaking hands before the boo birds come out.
Latest rumor has it that Manning and Bilicheat are teaming up next year since they are both poor sportsman and won’t acknowledge a winner after getting their asses handed to them.
